Shared Experiences Draw us Closer

"Whoa, whoa, where's the fire?" Dinah said, stopping him in the hall. "You just got back, take it easy. Take a shower."

"I have to do homework." Conner said, trying to body past her.

"Conner, you said you were done your homework." She chided.

"I am. I have to do Robin's."

"Robin's?"

"And Wally's. I did M'gann's this morning, but I have to prepare a cheat sheet for Artemis' test tomorrow."

Dinah was surprised at the teens, unloading all their work onto the one who couldn't see it was unfair. "Conner, you know it's against the rules for people to outsource their homework, don't you?"

"I have to do it. Robin's got food covered this week."

"He's what?"

"Ask him!" Conner snapped impatiently, pushing past her.

"Robin."

"BUSY." He shouted, sprinting past her, thrusting a stack of papers at Kaldur. "Yellow highlighter is spelling, Pink is grammar, blue is fact. Check it by Conner if you have questions."

"I'm almost done." Kaldur said, typing busily. He could only type with two fingers at an estimated twenty-five words a minute, but he was trying.

"I'll print that out when I get home, me and A will try to meet all your restrictions."

"I'm sorry."

"No, no, no issue. He's an expert."

Dinah took the boy by his shoulder. "Robin."

"Hmm?"

"Is it true you and the others have Conner doing your homework for you?"

"Oh, yeah, that..."

"I understand there is some academic integrity to obey, but at the moment we're scraping by." Kaldur sent off his file and slid the papers over, scribbling notes in the margins.

"We've each got a job to do to keep functioning. Conner is good with academics, so he's doing that." The boy grabbed a laundry basket off the couch. "Artemis, can you and your mom can patch?"

"Yeah, I have work, but she's good at sewing." Artemis said, lying on the couch under a mountain of bandages. "Kaldur, you need repairs?"

"Not yet."

"Okay."

Dinah sat on the couch next to the archer. She felt like she was missing something. "I thought you only buss tables on weekends?" She asked, petting Artemis' hair.

"I took up shifts after school to make ends meet." She grunted.

Wally buzzed through the room. "Can someone text the others that I'm gonna vacuumed? Don't wanna spook Wolf or the Aliens."

"Everyone's so busy, shouldn't you be resting after the mission?" Dinah asked. "It's late, you can't overstress your stamina or you'll burn out."

"Well we all have school tomorrow, me and Kaldur have work, but we'll make it to training, okay? Don't worry."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The zetabeam roared to life, Artemis staggered through, drowning in her greasy, size medium, polo; a visor falling over her eyes. "Water, please!" Dick and M'gann both hopped on it, supplying a glass from which she gladly slurped down the icy liquid. "Super? Here." She said, thrusting a plastic grocery bag at him.

"All the rips are gone!" Conner exclaimed, opening it and tearing out the stack of shirts.

"She did little flowers on the inside collar." Artemis rolled her eyes. "She... doesn't get out much, needs to fill time somehow."

"That's adorable though." Dick smirked. "Oh also," He strenuously lowered the massive basket at his side. "I told him we only needed school lunches, but I guess he figured you guys weren't feeding yourselves."

"OOh, what is it?" M'gann asked, opening it on the kitchen island. The basket was filled to the brim with glass and plastic containers, each labeled with tight, neat lettering.

"I guess he didn't know what foods you guys had heard of." Dick said sheepishly.

"Food?" Wally rolled off the couch, joining them. "A's food?"

"Of course."

"What's Da-hul?" M"gann asked, cricking her neck to the side to try and read better. "That's what it says, right?"

"What?" Dick stood on his toes to look over her shoulder. "Oh, Dahl. It's like an Indian lentil chili."

"Is it good?"

"Yeah." They sorted through the rest of the containers, ranging from leftover lasagna to assorted sandwiches and snacks adorned with the title 'School Lunches'.
"You guys are lucky, this guy's a great cook." Dick dislodged a small tin of cookies from the bottom of the basket, just like back at home it bore a warning against eating them all at once as a meal supplement. Unlike back at home it didn't have a tamper-sealed padlock, so Dick helped himself to one.

"How do you know this guy?" Artemis asked, accepting a cookie.

Wally took two. "He's the nanny."

Robin chuckled. "I guess you'd say he's mure púrodad,  like, my--"

"Your grandfather?" Conner finished.

Dick turned, eyebrows in the stratosphere. "Vaćare romane?"

"I speak every documented language." He replied. "Why are you speaking Romani?"

"Artemis, what are you doing here so early?" Kaldur asked, entering the room with an armful of manilla envelopes. "I thought you weren't off until midnight?"

"Poison Ivy. We got the evening off because the kitchen caved in with vines." She said, shedding her visor and polo. "Yay Gotham. What about you?"

"I have no work until the early morning." He replied. "Robin, I have the finished mission report, and I finished our training logs, thanks to your help."

"Thanks, I'll scan those for Bats." He took the pages. "Arty, how was the test?"

"I don't want to talk about it." She admitted.

"Oh, c'mon, here: let me wash your hair." M'gann insisted. "'ll take care of your body: you take a nap! You can pet Wolf!"

"You never answered, Robin." Conner said impatiently.

"Hmm?"

"About speaking Romani."

"Y'know, we're all at the end of our ropes, let's not get hung up on details." Wally interupted. "Can I have another cookie? I'll get on the chores. M'gann walked Wolf, right?"

"Well you don't have to answer anything." Superboy told him icily.

"I know, but Robin doesn't owe anything to anyone. He's an enigma, a mystery. Don't bother trying to understand him..."

"It's fine, Wally." Robin said tiredly. "Supes, Romani is my mother tongue."

"Your what?"

"My native language. I'm central European-Rroma..."

"Oh." Question answered, Conner moved on to Wally's AP Algebra pretest."

Artemis, too tired to stop M'gann, let the martian start inspecting her pores and hair follicles. "Rroma... that's like, Indian, right?"

"Sort of, but a lot of us look white because that's what happens when you're refugees in Europe for long enough." Robin rambled uncomfortably. "I mean, there was also, like, ethnic cleansings and religious assaults on us, but like..."

"What I'm hearing" Artemis interrupted. "is that we're Asian buddies."

"I-- I mean I guess so."

"And Kaldur's Black, but for all we know Atlantis could also boarder Asia." She shrugged. "One thing's for sure: You two are WAY better with your native languages than me. I know like eight words of central Vietnamese."

"như thế này?" Conner asked.

"Oh shut up, you show off." She sighed. "I don't know how we'll make rent this month with the kitchen at work crushed..."

"Well, here's my share." Dick said, flipping out a few bills. "That's the allowance this week."

"I feel like shit taking your money..." She sighed.

"I don't care. If you're scared of depending on the league, you need someone to depend on."

"I'm not scared, I'm concerned." She corrected. "And I don't want to depend on anyone."

"C'mon man, we're friends, I thought we pushed past that. Besides, you can't provide for the two of you on minimum wage."

"C'mon, I want to wash your hair." M'gann insisted. "Robin, your pores need help. You come too."

"Wait, Kaldur needs hydration!" Dick insisted. "He needs tlc too!"

"You just want all the POC together, don't you?" Wally snorted. "I guess I should be flattered that you think I have fine enough skin."

"Hey, we need to trauma bond on shared experiences!" Artemis added in a soft, tired, chuckle. "C'mon."

*So I got a job this August where I'm working 12+ hours a day in the kitchen at a summer camp, where there's only wifi around the director's hut. I'll try and post when I can, but I'm extremely overworked (Hence this content lol) and am living with 8 other employees/housemates rn.

Comments/requests/anything are super helpful in this time as my moral can get quite low.
