Regressed

-Yes, I know I have a whole deaged YJ book... but this is just a oneshot-

The  team were spread out across the floor of the atrium, each drowning in their costumes. How they'd made their way back to the mountain was a miracle, but it seemed M'gann was still strong enough to pilot the ship.

Bats was on the smallest child in a second. snatching him up. Robin's tunic fell well below his tiny feet, which kicked and struggled as he was lifted up.

"Robin..." He stood, holding the toddler against his chest. "What happened?" He asked the room at large, much softer than usual, he sat the boy on his lap.

"Kaldur?" Aquaman stooped, checking on one of the larger children.

"Sir!" Kaldur sprung to his feet, stumbling a little as he caught his balance and saluted.

"At ease."

Kaldur ended his salute, looking up. "Sir, we-- we've been deaged." He said, his high pitched voice stuttering over the words.

"I can see." He set his palm on Kaldur's head, surprising the boy with his informality. His king didn't typically show much affection towards him.

"We-- we aren't children," The boy clarified quickly, stepping out from under the hand. This was quite awkward now, but the truth was the team still had all their memories, and remembered being teenagers.

"Even when they're two feet tall, they're still claiming to be adults." Barry tutted, standing Wally up to assess him.

"We aren't!" Wally agreed. "We're teens!"

"Sure you are, big boy." Barry pushed the boy's unruly hair back so he could see properly. "We'll need some clothes for them until we get this fixed..."

"What we need is to figure out if this was magic or scientific, that will dictate how we go about fixing them." Bats said, holding the boy firmly on his lap.

"Bats!" Dick fussed. He wanted to be put down, ideally before his mentor smothered him to death. Bruce was being so weird! Picking him up and carrying him, pressing him up against his chest... Sure, he currently looked like a two-year-old, but that was no excuse! He wanted to go talk to his friends, to plan how they would manage this, but all I could vocalize was: "Down!".

Bruce set Dick down on the tile. Carefully, he stood, and on shaky legs, and ambled towards Wally.

Wally giggled a little. "You're so little!"

"You too!" Dick spat grumpily.

"How'd you get so small!" He continued to tease. Dick kicked him in the shins and they were even.

"We are teens." Artemis insisted, her hair so long in nearly trailed on the floor behind her. "For real!"

"Okay, okay." Oliver placated, scooping her off the floor. "We get it, you aren't babies."

"We aren't kids either!" She insisted. "Teenagers!"

"I should get them something to wear." Flash announced. "I'll be right back." He set his nephew down, and sped out the zeta.

Wally, now freed, ambled over to where M'gann was weaving in and out of her uncle's legs, both communicating through non-vocal means. The two gingers began whispering between themselves.

Across the room, Arthur ignored the kids. "We'll need to open the tank tonight for Kaldur."

"Sir..." Kaldur tilted his chin down, eyes on the floor. "I've long been able to sleep on land."

"Nonsense, Kaldur, not while you are so young." His king returned, squatting all the way down to the child's height. Kaldur found this very condescending, but he kept his mouth shut.

Conner, who'd been characteristically cagey, ignored, and distant, finally spoke up. "We aren't different! We aren't babies! Stop talking to us like babies!" He threw himself back on the ground and shunned all the adults.

"Conner..." Canary padded carefully towards him, fearing a temper tantrum. She shot Red Tornado a pleading look, and crouched beside the boy. "We hear you, okay? You're right, you're not babies." She said cautiously. "You're big kids."

That didn't please him either. The boy ignored her pointedly.

"Not fair." Artemis told her friends. "They don't understand!"

"No." Dick said, discouraged. "How-- how do we..."

"I don't know." Kaldur admitted. They'd done everything in their power to communicate their situation, but the league wouldn't listen.

Flash returned shortly with some child's clothes and a pack of pull-ups. As you can imagine, that went over terribly with the children. They were not willing to be diapered, even the two-year-old put up an admirable fight. But in the end, their mentor's dressed them in their new clothes.
Except Conner, who didn't have a mentor and refused to take off his shirt.

"It's late," Flash observed, scooping up his nephew. "We'd better get the little ones ready for bed while we figure this out."

"No!" Wally protested. He wouldn't be put to bed while the grownups handled things... This was their responsibility too.

"Yep, come on kiddo, you're tired."

"No, I'm not!"

Instantly the other kids also began vocally protesting.

"Excuse me?" Kaldur murmured. "With all due--"

"You can't do this!" Conner shouted. "You can't! can't! Can't!"

Dinah sighed, embarrassed, and lifted the little boy off the floor. "Sorry, he's throwing a tantrum. This might take a while."

"I'm not throwing a tantrum!" Conner kicked and fussed as he was held off the ground.

"Put him down!" Kaldur objected, knowing very well how Conner hated being restrained in any way.

"We'll get the rest of them ready while you deal with himself." Oliver kissed his partner on the cheek, making Artemis nearly gag.

Dinah sat the upset Conner on the floor. "Good luck."

"Ditto."

"Dick--"

"NO!"

"Please--"

"NO!"

Bruce had heard that two-year-olds were stubborn, but this was ridiculous. Dick refused to even lie down, fragile arms crossed over his tiny ribcage. He was so small, so breakable, Bruce could barely stand to touch him.

"Well why not." He huffed, staring down at the toddler.

"Not sleepy." Dick replied. "too grown up."

Bruce brushed the child's hair back. "Please, Dickie? For me?"

The boy melted a little. "...No."

Well, that didn't work, but at least he wasn't yelling now.

"Please?"

"No."

"Okay." Bruce swept the boy up and sat on the bed, holding the child securely. Dick folded like a ragdoll cat, nestling up against the bat emblem.

"...no." He muttered, though he was undeniably comfortable being cuddled. Bruce never got this physically intimate. It was unfamiliar, but it felt so safe.

"Good boy." Bruce huffed, holding him securely as he leaned back on the bed. He'd stay there as long as he needed until Dickie was asleep.

"Stay still a moment, kid."

Wally squirmed, refusing to cooperate. "Do it myself!"

"Okay." Barry passed over the toothbrush, watching the boy clean his teeth with an adult-sized brush, which was far too big. "Good boy."

Wally's pasty skin turned very pink. "Stop."

"Stop what?"

"Baby talk." He whined. "I'm a big kid-- I mean, I'm a teen!"

Barry smiled an ounce, ruffling the four-year-old's hair. He wasn't even old enough to be in kindergarten! "You're doing so well brushing your teeth like a grown up!" He cheered.

Wally, who hadn't been spoken to like that since he was actually a child, tried to pretend he didn't like it, like it didn't feel safe compared to the harsh critique and yelling he usually got. "...thanks."

M'gann yawned. "Not sleepy yet."

"Would you like a story?" J'onn asked unsurely, sitting at foot of her bed. He wasn't sure he ad a story to tell, but he'd try.

"Yeah!" She exclaimed. "I-- I mean, no! I'm too old for stories..." They hesitated, trying to jude his reaction, before dropping the act. "I mean, yes please."

J'onn decided to recap his most recent case, censoring some of the more mature details. He barely finished when M'gann was out like a light. She must have really been tired.

Artemis was throwing a fit. She did NOT want to go to bed.

"Come on, lay down."

"Never!" She protested. "Can do it myself!"

"Okay, then do it!" Oliver snapped.

"No."

God, what was it about his protégés that made them so difficult? He wasn't that stubborn himself, was he?

"Artemis, you'll need to sleep eventually." He told her. "Of you can stay up with me and explain to your mom how you became a child again."

Grumbling, the girl got under the covers. "Fine."

"Good girl." He praised. Artemis, who did not get praised often, blushed, toying with her hair. "Do you want me to tuck you in?"

She shook her head. "I can do it."

"Okay." He pat her head gently. "G'night, kiddo."

The tank was a sensory deprivation pod, typically used while heroes needed mental clarity from mind control, was the only salt water pool they had-- which meant it was safe for Kaldur to breath without getting lightheaded or inhaling chlorine.

"You're being so cooperative." Arthur claimed, petting the boy's forehead as he climbed into the tank.

"Sir, I can sleep unattended." Kaldur said. "You don't need to watch."

"I know. I just want to be safe." His king replied, watching the boy carefully. "It's my responsibility to take care of you while you're away from your mother. I take that very seriously."

"I understand." Kaldur relented. "But please, we aren't really children, I can take care of myself. And the team."

"I know, Kaldur." Arthur said, just to please the boy. "I'll be back to check on you in ten minutes. Try to get some rest."

"Why don't you wanna go to bed, baby-- I mean-- big boy?" Dinah quickly corrected the pet name, lest it offend him.

"I'm not a child." Conner said. "We're all grown up. I remember, I'm 16."

"Ah," Dinah said. "You mean you have all your memories. I understand then."

"No, you don't!"

"Then explain, please."

Conner fumbled over his words. "We're still grown up. We just look small."

Dinah nodded patiently. She understood what he was trying to say, but based on the team's childish behavior, she wasn't entirely sure she believed it. They may be partially regressed, but still think they're teenagers. They'd have to find a way to treat the children without offending them.

"How about this, you can stay up a little longer, but then could you please go to bed for me? I don't want the league to think I can't control you guys."

Conner reluctantly agreed, and Dinah stood. "I'll get you a cup of water."

"Why isn't he in bed yet?" Ollie asked, gesturing to wear Conner sat on the sofa, cradling a cup of water and watching static.

"He's not tired." Dinah replied simply.

"You know they aren't actual teens, right?" Barry replied.

"Yes we are!" Conner shouted.

Dinah smiled a little at his determination. "Hey, has anyone seen Bats?"
