Rainy Day

-Wheel of Names picked the prompts "Storm" and "Scary movies", so it's that with a heaping helping of the league not taking their kiddos seriously.-

A late summer tempest had blown into Happy Harbour, smothering the sun in heavy grey clouds and dowsing the little city in a relentless torrential downpour. Rain pounded off the concrete like hail, drowning sidewalks and flooding parking lots, and the few citizens who had the misfortune of being out sought asylum under awnings and bus shelters.

The sun, hidden as it was, was descending rapidly and the early evening had taken over, bringing with it cooler temperatures.

The team had been in town getting dinner, and the trip back up the mountain was tough; the deer path that lead up to the hanger bay door was slick with mud, forcing them to scramble for grip and smearing aforementioned mud up their socks and knees as they climbed.

Reaching the hanger door, they saw it had been shut against the rain. Feeling around form the sensor, M'gann opened the door just enough for the team to slip through one by one.

Everyone was shuddering, peeling off their waterlogged shoes and sweaters, they were about to continue on to the showers and change room when Conner perked up.

"There's someone here."

The team froze. "Who?" Robin asked.

Conner paused, listening. "Batman," he said, "and others, I can hear their hearts beat."

Great, the leaguers were already there.

They had a meeting later that night, what was the league doing here already?

Being in a pretty bad mood, the team decided to confront their mentors for invading their space.

They were in the atrium when the teens (soaked, shoeless and caked in mud) stormed in.

"You're early." Kaldur said.

The leaguers turned to face them, seemingly surprised by their appearances.

"What happened to you guys?" Arrow asked.

"We got caught in the rain," Artemis replied, wringing her hair out.

"Are you okay?" Barry asked. "Poor things, you look awful."

"We will be alright when we shower," M'gann said. "Why are you here so early? Our meeting is like two hours away."

"We have our own things to discuss first."

"Then why not do it at the watchtower." Wally asked.

"It's inconvenient," Batman replied firmly. "If we're just going to come down here anyways we might as well congregate here."

"You might as well not," Conner said, "It's not your base anymore, it's our house." A couple of the leaguers seemed amused by this, which only irritated Conner further. "I'm serious, this is our base and me and M'gann's house." He exclaimed.

"It's fine." M'gann tried to calm her friend before he got worked up and started yelling.

"He's got a point," Robin agreed. "You said this was our HQ. You can't just use a gift you've given to someone else."

"It does seem unfair..." Kaldur admitted, eyeing his king nervously.

"It's stupid." Artemis said. "Either it's ours or it's yours, and if you won't treat our space with respect and privacy then--"

"We'll stay out of your way," Barry assured, looking down at the kids. He didn't mind when they got all whiny and difficult like this, he thought it was cute that they saw it as 'their own base' and not what it really was: a daycare center to keep them from getting underfoot in the watchtower. Okay, maybe that was a little biased, but there was no arguing the reason that the league had brought the mountain out of retirement: because they couldn't let the kids run loose the real base of operations.

"If you'll excuse us, we must get changed." Kaldur said coolly, leading the other kids down the hall.

The team didn't want to get into costume, seeing as they didn't have an actual mission that night, so they got the spare sets of clothes they kept in the armory. The 'spare clothes' were actually pyjamas they usually changed into after missions, but they were clean and dry, so the team couldn't complain about feeling a little silly for wearing their pyjamas in front of the league.

They wrestled themselves out of the wet clothes and clambered into the girls' shower. The hot water was a relief, and soon the waft of rosewater and peony shampoo permeated the steam-filled room. The teens were so desensitized to changing and showering together that they weren't shy when it came to chatting or sharing bodywash.

When they were done they toweled off and started getting changed. Kaldur was helping Artemis blow dry her hair while the others wriggled into their loungewear.

Now that they were bathed and changed, they made their way to the living room, where Wolf had settled on the floor.

"Good boy." Wally said, ruffling the beast's ears as he sat down. Wolf, deciding this was a more than satisfactory agreement, pinned the redhead down with his muscular neck and chin, demanding more attention.

"What do you guys wanna watch?"

"I brought something." Artemis reached into her school bag, rifling around. She removed a dvd case labeled 'The Decent'. "It's a horror."

"Perfect for the weather." Robin agreed, "Put it on."

The meeting was disturbed by a sudden cacophony of echoing screams. It was the team.

Not even stopping to finish their discussions, the league took off, following the sound, feet pounding on the stone floor as they chased their sidekick's voices.

They found them in the living room.

"What's wrong?"

The cluster of teens squeezed onto the sofa jumped, whipping around. They'd all showered and changed into pyjama pants and sleep shirts, and were now gripping each other, Wolf grumbling softly at their feet.

Aqualad fumbled for the remote and paused whatever they were watching.

"Is everything alright?" Aquaman asked, hand on his hips.

"Y-Yes sir," Kaldur said, but he didn't stand, as if too frightened to expose his ankles to the now frightening gap under the sofa, "I'm sorry we disturbed you."

"Aw, aren't you so precious in your jammies?" Oliver teased. Several, if not all, of the teens began turning pink and Artemis hissed for her mentor to just shut up.

"Is this movie rated R?" Barry asked, eyeing his nephew.

"Flash," Wally said, "you know we're mature enough for this!"

"The mature thing to do would be to acknowledge the rating and watch something age-appropriate."

"This is age appropriate!"

Batman strode to the TV and picked up the DVD case. "Rated R for sever gore and violence."

"We're used to that though!"

"And you're exposed to enough of it as is without giving yourselves nightmares with horror movies."

"We won't get nightmares!" Artemis objected. "We aren't babies, you realize."

"You sure sounded like it when you all screamed like that." Her mentor snorted. "We thought you'd been hurt or something."

"If you're free, we'll have the team's part of the meeting now." Bruce said. He wanted the kids to  go home early, or else Dick would fall asleep in in class again. "...and then you can all go home."

"Okay, well what did you want to talk to us about?" Artemis snapped as the teens clambered out of their nest and stood in the living room, facing their mentors. The tension would have been palpable if the team weren't standing there pouting in their pyjamas because they weren't allowed to watch an R rated film. It was hard for most of the mentors to take the kids seriously as is, but this slumber party display was too much; they were adorable!

"We could start by discussing your recent reports," Batman said. "Because although Aqualad is very good at writing, it seems he's been avoidant in stating facts. For instance: 'The fight was brief and successful, no substantial injuries, no damage to public property'," he read aloud. "It sounds quite good when phrased like that, and no where on this page does it clarify that there were minor injuries during the battle, nor that over $8000 in damages were done to private property."

"Damages aside, you guys know why you have to record all your injuries, right?" Dinah asked. There were a couple shy nods and murmured 'yeah's. "It's because if you get a minor cut, and then it gets infected, we need to be able to trace it back to the mission."

"Also if you don't realize the injury occurred during working hours, you might go to a hospital for care and be charged for it." Bats added sternly. "You must record everything, even if you think it's unflattering for the team, understand?"

"Yes sir." Kaldur muttered, eyes avoidant and chin down in shame.

"That being said, the lack in public property damage is impressive given your terrain." J'onn said, trying to lift his niece's spirits somewhat.

"We lead them towards the mall specifically to avoid public property damage!" Wally proclaimed. "And it worked they just, uh, wrecked a couple shop displays."

"Otherwise, there isn't much we need to speak to you about, except that I'm afraid you'll have to stop taking that down the mountain."

"You mean Wolf?"  Conner demanded. "Why?"

"Because the driftwood newspaper just published a blurb about The Beast of Happy Harbour," Batman replied. "A giant white, dog-like creature spotted by hikers last month," he eyed the teens severely. "Need I remind you that the more people who go chasing this legend, the more people who will come to investigate the mountain, and the higher risk there is you'll be discovered."

"He needs room to run!" Conner argued.

"He can run somewhere where we know he won't attack dogwalkers or campers." Bruce said firmly. He always tried to be patient with Superboy, given his situation, but he had to admit the boy was far more tiresome than Dick was.

"He still needs room." Conner grumbled.

"Speaking of needing room," Robin interrupted, "We need to talk about you guys intruding."

"Sorry, is this a 'no grownups zone'?"

"We're serious!" Wally whined. "You said it was ours, and now you guys keep taking it back."

"We're not taking it back." J'onn assured.

"He's right." Orin agreed. "I'm afraid you'll have to accept sharing with us occasionally."

"But we don't--"

"It doesn't matter what you want." Batman said. "You have to share, it's the mature thing to do." That shut the kids up, although they were furious none of them wanted to look childish in front of their bosses. "Now, if there's nothing else, I suggest you all go home, it's a school night."

-guess who has a couple dates lined up~
