Faux Binary

-Heyyyy this part was inspired by a request submitted by Equine_Legend675 -

"We were going easy on you guys." Oliver said, panting for breath. "We didn't want to hurt the little ones."

"Yeah right, and that's the only reason you lost." His mentee replied, unmounting her quiver. "Face it, you're old."

"Thirty-three is not old."

"It's ancient!"

Canary had been pressing the other members of the league to contribute to the team's training; today they'd gathered a handful of heroes to run drills with the teens. The league had seriously forgotten how brutal training drills could be, and were horrified that the teens who ran them twice a week and overtook them easily.

"Don't forget to thank the land," Wonder woman told the children. "Your knowledge of the terrain helped you a lot."

"Excuses excuses, we beat you!" Wally teased. "This is a high I'll ride for days."

"Don't become overconfident." Batman reminded. "You all have a long way to go."

"That being said, very good job," Canary continued. "And let's all get showered and head home before our night shifts start."

Conner followed M'gann back towards the showers, only to feel a tiny hand grab his arm.

"This way, big guy." Robin said, steering him into the barely-used men's showers. The room was dismal, and generally only used when they needed to wash wolf; stone walls, tiles, ancient grout, it was hardly a comforting sight.

Conner didn't know why Robin had herded him in here, but several other leaguers and team members followed, so Conner assumed they'd opened the room up to accommodate everyone.

"It's so cool having you guys here." Wally said, finding a quiet corner to undress. "Right Rob?"

"Yeah, it's fun to train together-- ugh." He sighed, looking into his sports bag. "I forgot to bring my body wash."

The woman's room was significantly larger than the men's room, which was ironic given there were only three women on the league, but it had never really posed an issue for the women, so they'd never bothered complaining about the impractical sexism of the decision.

It was very clear that this room was frequented, there was a toothbrush by the sink, a hairdryer plugged into the wall, and scattered makeup and nail polish on the counter; they assumed this belonged to the teenage girls of the team, none of them disliked the kids enough to comment on how unprofessional it was not to clean those things up.

After the basics (peeing, undressing, peeling tangled hair out of their headpieces), they women and girls accumulated in the showers.

The showers were well stocked with toiletries, obviously the league had brought their own from home, but they couldn't help gawking at how many shampoos and bodywashes M'gann had.

M'gann felt a little uncomfortable showering in front of all these new people. When she showered at school after cheer she gave herself a smooth, hairless body like a doll, not only was it easier, but it seemed to impress the other girls. Right now, standing next to three very grown up women, the thin and hairless body felt too childish, and she found themself silently shifting stretchmarks and scars and hair onto her body, trying to look more grown up and weathered than she was.

Artemis had never seen so many adult women who looked like her in one place, and it took effort not to stare at their broad shoulders and unshaven hair and hip dips. She had those things, and somehow she'd convinced herself that her favorite heroes wouldn't.

There were a couple shouts of surprise when the door opened and Conner barged in.

The boy was also unclothed.

"What are you doing here?" Hawkwoman spat, furious to have her comfort disturbed,

"Let me," Dinah leapt out of the shower before Shayera could eviscerate the boy, hastily covering herself with a towel. "Conner, you need to knock."

He blinked innocently. "M'gann, did you take the towels out of the dryer?"

"Uh, yeah." M'gann replied. "Sorry, I was going to put them away... I left the hamper on the couch."

"Okay." He made to leave, paused, and turned back. "Robin wanted to use his bodywash."

Artemis got it off the shower shelf and clambered out of the shower, handing it off to her friend.

"Conner, you really can't just walk in here," Canary repeated, trying to bear in mind the boy's age and ignorance, "You need to knock and stay outside."

"Why?"

"Because this is the women's shower."

"Why is it only for women?" Conner demanded, "I shower in here all the time!"

Dinah didn't know what to say, continuing to herd the nude teenager towards the door. Respectfully, towards Clark, she didn't want to see all that.

"We, uh, look." M'gann stepped out of the shower. "We-- usually all use this shower, like, we all shower in here together most of the time."

"Yeah," Artemis said, "it's not Conner's fault."

"It may have been a mistake, but we all need boundaries, yeah?" Dinah pressuring Conner to the door. "Conner, in future don't come in here unless everyone says its okay."

"Why?"

"So everyone can feel safe."

"Do I make them feel unsafe?"

It was an innocent question, but one Dinah really didn't feel like answering. "Ask your friends." She opened the door and gestured for him to leave.

Conner pensively returned to the other change room, he handed off Robin's body wash and got in the shower.

Kaldur was already in there, silently scrubbing dirt and small patched of dried blood from his skin.

Conner decided this was the perfect time to ask him: "Why are the changerooms separated?"

"Pardon?"

"Why is there a men's shower and a women's shower? There's no difference in the actual showers."

"...well," Kaldur began, "I'm sure your aware that humans, like many species, are primarily found in two sexes..."

"But there are more than two sex variations."

"Well, yes, but most people fall into one of the two, and culturally that has become a common way to divide people."

"Oh." Conner said. "Why do they need to be divided?"

"I'll handle this," Wally told their leader, "you see, Connie-boy, the way babies are made..."

"I know all that!" Conner rolled his eyes. "But why are they separated?"

"We can discuss it later." Dick replied, very aware of the leaguers listening in.

"No, we can discuss it now." Conner demanded, frustrated with everyone's evasiveness. "Why is everyone being so secretive?!"

Kaldur thought over how to explain it in terms Conner would understand. "It's to discourage people from seeing other genitals, which evolved from a purity-based structure."

"People aren't supposed to see each others genitals?" Conner asked. "How are they supposed to reproduce?!"

"It's... complicated. There's a lot of history." Robin explained. "I guess it doesn't really make sense."

"Yeah, that's why we usually don't bother." Wally said. "But y'know, with them here, it was kind of expected that we'd separate."

"No one told me." Conner huffed. He constantly felt like people were setting him up for failure by refusing to disclose vital information because they assumed he'd already know.

"It's alright Supes, we can fix this." Wally promised.

They were all changing into their dry clothes when there was a faint shuffling sound, and something shot under the door.

Hairbrush dug into her platinum blonde waves, Dinah frowned; she stooped to grab the slip of paper.

"What's that?" M'gann asked, exfoliating her face over the sink.

Canary opened the note, eyes flicking down it. She then stifled a snort of laughter and set it on the counter:

"To whom it may concern (Women of the Justice League),

I'm sorry that I crossed a social line, even though I didn't know it was there.

Let me know how I can fix this immediately.

Regards,
Superboy."
