Rain Check

"Mom, seriously you need to stop worrying so much over this. It doesn't even matter about how I look." I laughed at her. She smiled at me as she took in my appearance.

"Oh I know, but my little boy is all grown up! It's your senior prom and before I know it you'll be gone to live your own life." She started to tear up and I hugged her. My parents and I had talked about what they'd said previously and everything had been worked out.

Now to the prom thing, Marco and I decided to go together but not together together. It was fine honestly and I wouldn't have changed it for the world. What's better than going to prom with your best friend that you accidentally fell in love with?

"Oh Marco is going to swoon so fast-"

"Mom!" She giggled. "Oh come on! Don't even try to lie to me, I've known that you've had the hots for the boy since day one. You love him, don't you?" I blushed and looked away, clenching my jaw a bit. "Oh sweetie, I know how hard it is but I promise that you'll get your chance-"

"Jean!" I heard from the door. My father opened it and someone came running in. "Jean! Guess what!" I seen Marco stop at the door of the room that we were in. He took in my attire and swallowed. "You're wearing a tux."

"Oh, yeah I am. It was my brothers." I stated and he nodded, looking at me again. "What is it?"

"Right! I got accepted to Oxford!" My heart sank and in that instant I felt as if my world had crashed down around me. I forced a smile onto my face.

"That's great man. Um wow, congrats? I mean I don't know what to say. That's just- that's amazing." He didn't seem to notice my struggle and I was glad for that.

"Yeah I leave next week for a tour and all that jazz." He said happily.

"Prom is next week." I stated quietly and his smile faded into one of apology.

"Yeah I know, I'm going to have to take a rain check on that." The look of heartbreak had to be obvious but I quickly tried to wipe it off with a smile.

"Mom, thank you for fretting over my tux. I'll go hang it up." I kissed her on the cheek and walked out, noticing the look of pity she had for me. Marco was looking down at the ground as I walked by him. I heard him follow me down to my room the whole way.

"Jean I don't have to go if you don't want me-"

"What? No Marco. Fuck me and what I want. This is your dream and I'll be damned if I'm going to be the one that holds you back from it. When you leave, I'm going to be lonely as hell but guess what? I will gladly be that way because I know how much this means to you."

"Jean you mean the most to me."

"Well you know what, fuck that. Fuck me, and everything around here because how many chances are you going to get to go to place like that and follow your dreams?" I said, trying to keep myself from telling him not to. "I can come visit if you want."

"Alright." He swallowed. "I leave Monday at three. I'll see you then?" I nodded and he left, leaving me to my own thoughts.

"Fucking hell." I sat on my bed and put my head in my hands.
~ (Monday)

"Jean, where are you? I can't find you." I heard Marco say as I laid in my bed, bloodshot eyes, bags, and pale skin become a common thing for me. I hadn't left my house since he'd told me. I stared blankly at the ceiling.

"Right, you're leaving today aren't you?" I asked, knowing full well that he was. I sighed.

"Are you not coming?" He asked quietly, making me feel a bit of regret.

"I'm gonna have to take a-" I stopped my sentence and looked at the time. It was two-thirty. I could make it. I hung up and ran out the door, throwing on some shoes and a jacket while I was at it. I went to my car and cranked it, nearly crying when it didn't start the first time. When it finally did, I took off down the road at ungodly speeds.

When the airport came into my sight, I sighed and looked at the time. Two forty-five. I jumped out when I found and spot and ran into the building as fast as I could. I spotted Marcos mother and father, then I ran up to them.

"Where is he?" I asked, breathing hard. They simply pointed behind me and he was standing in the line for the plane. I ran to him. "Marco!" He turned around and he smiled at me, eyes lighting up. I threw my arms around him. "Go get em Freckles."

"I thought you were going to take a rain check on me." He laughed quietly. I heard a camera snap and we looked to see his mom with her phone. "Call me alright?"

"You better do the same. And don't forget about me, alright? I may not be the best person in the world but you are-"

"I would never forget you Jean." He whispered and I smiled lightly. I had the urge to confess my feelings to him then and there, and I would have if I feared the possibility that he would stay because he thought that he had to stay for me. Sure, I didn't want him to leave but who was I to tell him that?"

"You're my best friend you nerd."

"And you're mine, you dick." I laughed and hugged him one more time. "I'll paint you a picture of my dorm room."

"Right, rub in the fact that I'm not smart enough to go to some fancy ass school." He shook his head and turned to where the hall was to board his plane. "Go, you little shit." He smiled and walked on, waving back to us as I stood back with his parents.

As I sat in my car, I looked at the picture his mother took of us and smiled. It was my new favorite. Oh how I loved it.

Oh how I loved him.

Well this story is just about done.
