Chapter 9
━━━━━━━━━
3 months later
"Chase, I'm not sure if you want to see this." Donald said as Chase paced around the top floor. This was already horrible, how much worse could it get?
"Douglas enterprise has already surpassed us in the business world, and, Marcus stole Bree from me, how much worse can it get?" Chase replied sarcastically. Donald sighed as he passed the magazine to Chase. This months issue of CEO monthly sat in Chases hands. Chase was really starting to hate this magazine. Chase sat down on the couch by his father who watched his son closely.
"Marcus Greenburg engaged to assistant, and girlfriend, of three months, Bree Henderson." Chase read, his voice cracking at every word. How could he let this happen? Marcus was supposed to screw up! Not end up with the only girl Chase has ever loved!
"Why did you make me break up with her? Now I'm just some fling she had three months ago! I'm nothing to her and I'm still in love with her!" Chase yelled as he began to pace around again. Chase was furious. This shouldn't be happening. Marcus doesn't deserve Bree. Bree needs someone who will ditch conventions with her and get to know her while they eat ice cream. She needs someone who is willing to take risks for her, not someone who will ignore her for the business.
"Chase, I know this shouldn't have happened. If you just listen to me, I want to make this right. I have a plan." Donald said as he put a hand on his son's shoulder to stop him. Chase crossed his arms over his chest but nodded. He did need some help in this particular situation.
"What do you have in mind?" Chase asked. Donald smiled.
"Well, first we have to figure out if she still likes you. You have to call her." Donald said as he picked his son's phone up off the table sitting next to them. He handed it to Chase with confidence. Chase laughed at his father. He really thought he was good. Donald saw the doubt in Chases eyes.
"Hey, do keep in mind I found a wife for myself, and, I was able to get Jannel with Leo. How amazingly handsome, and smart, am I?" Donald said. Chase rolled his eyes as he began to dial Brees number. He lifted the phone up to his ear and waited for the answer.
"Chase! Hey, I've been meaning to talk with you." Bree said. She began to whisper.
"Bree, are you okay?" Chase asked. He heard shuffling and then the slam of a door.
"I really need to talk with you. Can I meet you somewhere?" Bree asked hopefully. Chase smiled as he thought of where they could meet.
"Why not at my house? Do you need a ride?" Chase asked. She laughed quietly.
"No, I can get there. I'll see you in a bit. By Chase." Bree said with a loving tone. Chase smiled.
"By Bree." Chase said before hanging up the phone. He turned to see his father with his hands covering his mouth. Sometimes, Chase wondered why people called him a genius. He just thought his father was crazy.
"Go meet her!" Donald said as he slapped Chase on the back. Chase laughed then nodded.
"Thanks, dad." Chase called over his shoulder as he made his way to the elevator. He tried to keep calm as he waited for the elevator to reach the ground floor. He couldn't wait to see Bree. He literally hadn't seen her for three months. Marcus had made it pretty clear that Bree was not suppose to speak with someone of the rival company. But now, Bree wanted to meet with him. She wanted to see him. And whether or not that meant this was he last time; Chase would still have closure.
He sighed as he stepped into his car and began the five minute drive to his house. He pulled into the driveway and got out of the car. Just as he was opening the front door, he heard another car pulling into the driveway. He smiled before he turned to see Bree almost running to him. He stood with the door open behind him as he watched Bree bound up the stairs to him. She smile as she lunged forward and pulled Chase into a much needed hug. Chase smiled as he hugged her tighter. She laughed.
"I missed you." She whispered. She sounded as if she was about to cry.
"I missed you more." Chase whispered back. She smiled as they pulled away. Chase took her hand in his and led her inside. He closed the door and turned to see she was right behind him.
"Chase you have no idea how many times I wanted to call or text, or even just stop by the office. I missed you so badly." Bree said as the tears began to fall. She leaned up to Chase's face and waited for Chase to reply.
"God I missed you." Chase said before he pulled her close by the hips and kissed her. She smiled as she wrapped her arms around his neck and threaded her fingers through his hair. He led them into the living room where he moved on top of her and continued to kiss her. She smiled as he pulled away for a second so they both could catch their breath.
"I love you, Chase." Bree said suddenly. Chase let himself smile as wide as he could.
"I love you too, Bree." Chase whispered against Bree's lips before he closed the gap again. He tried to tell her how much he had missed her through the kiss. Then, the reminder of her and Marcus popped into his head. He pulled away to see a very confused Bree.
"What's wrong?" She asked as she tried to pull him close again.
"Aren't you and Marcus engaged?" Chase asked. Bree looked up into his eyes searching for any kind of indication that he was kidding.
"No, we aren't even dating. I quit a month ago because to be honest, the kid is annoying." Bree explained. Chase frowned in confusion.
"Then why did CEO monthly say that you two have been dating for three months, and are now engaged?" Chase asked as he moved to sit by her. She kept her arms around him as he threw an arm around her shoulder. Bree sat back in shock.
"It says that? Where did they even get that anyway? I've never talked to Marcus outside of the office and, again, I started working for you a month ago." Bree said with a smile at the end of it. Chase's mouth fell in shock.
"What do you mean?" Chase asked with a smile.
"I mean, your dad needed someone to send messages back and forth from China so he wouldn't have to keep traveling, so he hired me. He said if I did good he would have me be your assistant again." Bree explained. Chase wrapped his arms tightly around her. She laughed into his neck as they hugged. Chase couldn't be happier. This was the first time his father had done anything for him, without getting anything in return.
"I'm so happy to have you back Bree." Chase whispered as he pulled away to see Bree's face. She smiled up at him.
"I'm happy to have you back. I didn't go a day without thinking about you." Bree whispered as she laid her head on Chase's shoulder. They leaned back as Chase turned on the tv and flipped through the movie channels.
"I didn't go an hour without thinking about you." Chase said as he felt Bree lightly slap him on his shoulder. He laughed.
"What is it you and the one uping?" Bree asked while laughing.
"Hey, you got to say I love you first when I have loved for since the moment I met you. I think I deserve some one uping." Chase said in a justified tone. Bree laughed as they finally decided to watch a movie.
"Chase I have something to tell you." Bree whispered. Chase turned his attention from the tv to Bree.
"What is it?" Chase asked.
"I may or may not have also been in love with you since we met." Bree whispered. Chase smiled as he looked down at her.
"Bree, will you be my-"
"Yes Chase. You don't even have to ask." Bree whispered as she moved closer. She connected their lips just as the movie began.
"I love you Bree." Chase said with a smile.
"I love you too." Bree said.
"I'm going to get us some popcorn." Chase said as he stood up and made his way to the kitchen. Bree laughed as he walked away. She felt her phone buzz in her pocket.
I know you like him, but remember out deal. I told you to gather information, and you've done good so far. You even got him believing you were the best secretary in California. So I know for a fact you can keep this going. Tell me when you have more into. Davenport Industries will be a thing of the past by the time we're done with them.
Bree's smile fell as she read the text. How could she have done this to Chase? Yes at first it was just about the money, Marcus had offered her a lot to be a double agent. But when she saw Chase for the first time, things changed. Then they got to know each other. Everything was so complicated now. She did know Marcus printed that fake article about them getting engaged. She did know how it would hurt Chase. But, come to think of her feelings, she couldn't see a life without him now. Three months had been enough, she couldn't stay away much longer. Marcus didn't even know she came here today. She had to fake a doctors appointment just to come here. All she knew was, when this was all done, Chase was going to hate her. That fact scared her more than Marcus' power in the business world.
