Chapter 4

━━━━━━━━━

"Oh come on! You live in a huge mansion, you're pretty much CEO of your own company, and now, you have the best assistant." Bree said as they walked into the living room. Chase carried the bowl of ice cream along with them as they sat down on the floor in front of the tv. He smirked back at her.

"Well it's kind of hard to enjoy all of this when you live in it all by yourself." Chase said lowly causing Bree's smile to fade.

"Oh, well don't you have Adam over here all the time?" Bree asked hopefully. Chase shook his head.

"Adam and I are only kind of friends. I mean, we've know eachother forever, but now we're both adults and, believe it or not, sometimes he can be more serious than me. Plus, he's married and has a kid on the way." Chase mumbled the last part as Bree's eyes widened.

"WHAT! How could you not tell me about something like that? First of all, and I'm sorry for this, but how in the world did Adam get married before you did? Second, why would this girl think he would be mature enough to handle a kid?" Bree asked as she ate her half of the ice cream. Chase laughed. Within the two hours that they've spent together, Bree already knew a lot more than Adam even knew about Chase. In turn, Chase knew a lot about Bree he never thought he would know.

"Actually, Adam and his wife have been dating since middle school. He asked her to marry him the night of their high school graduation. The rest is history." Chase explained as he ate. Bree smiled as their spoons touched for a second reaching for the same spot of the ice cream. Chase looked up to see her blushing.

"Here." Chase said as he took her spoon and picked up the last bit of ice cream. He handed her spoon over to her before he picked up the bowl and headed back to the kitchen. Bree sighed as she watched Chase make his way to the sink. She stood up and walked slowly into the kitchen behind Chase. He turned to see her holding the spoon up for him. He smiled and put it into the sink.

"So, what did you mean when you were talking about a world where Adam would get married first?" Chase smirked as he leaned against the counter. Bree smiled softly before she looked down to the floor.

"I don't know, I mean.... Your just, and Adam seems so..." Bree left off, causing Chase to laugh lightly. She looked back to him worriedly.

First step complete, now for step two.

"It's okay if you need to tell me. I know that I'm way better looking than Adam." Chase said in complete seriousness. Bree burst out laughing.

"How can you be- so serious when saying something like that?" Bree asked as she caught her breath. Chase smiled back at her.

"I try. I think I've just gotten to the point where I can act no matter what." Chase brushed it off simply. Bree stood back up straight.

"Have you been acting around me?" Bree asked quickly, worried her words would soon show some truth. Chase shook his head.

"Of course not. This is probably the most me I've been around someone for a while. You are most likely the person who knows me the best." Chase said, walking closer to her. Bree smiled up at him as he rested his hands on the counter on either side of her. She placed her hands on his chest as he caged her in.

"Really?" She asked with a smile.

"Yes, really." He said. He slowly started to move his face closer to hers. He could tell she wanted it too as she started to inch closer to him. Just as Chase was about to close the gap between them, the front door opened, then slammed shut. Chase instantly knew who it was.

"Go up stairs through the elevator. I'll distract him so he won't see you. Go in through the first door on the right when you get to the third floor. I'll meet you up there when its safe." Bree nodded and quickly made her way to the elevator. Chase turned away from Bree to see his father rounding the corner to the kitchen. Chase sighed, knowing he was mad about something.

"Chase, what are you doing at home? I specifically told you to stay at the presentation." Donald yelled at his son. Chase threw his head back and groaned.

"Dad, I had some other Davenport Industries things to take care of. I am the one who is here the majority of the time. You basically have no idea of what goes on around here." Chase countered as he crossed his arms across his chest.

"Chase, I know exactly what goes on around here. If you don't remember, I did start the business." Donald said calmly. Chase laughed in annoyance.

"Well I was actually in the middle of something, so if you could, can we continue this fight tomorrow?" Chase said as he motioned for his father to leave. Donald sighed.

"I don't want to have a fight, or continue one. Let's just agree to talk about one thing tomorrow." Donald suggested as he made his way to the front door. Chase followed in complete wonder. What did he want to talk about?

"What, one thing, do we have to talk about?" Chase asked as he met his father at the open door. Donald stood in the doorframe, ready to answer the question he had been waiting for Chase to ask.

"I would like to talk about your new assistant. Also, the fact that you promoted Adam. Without my permission, might I add." Donald said with a sly smile.

Crap, he knew.

"Alright dad. Tomorrow." Chase said as he closed the door. He sighed and leaned back against it. How could he let this happen? How could he begin to fall for his assistant? How could he ditch the biggest presentation of the year, just because there was a chance he would get to know her?

"Chase." Bree said as she made her way down the staircase. Chase sighed before he pushed himself away from the door.

"Yeah?" He breathed. She walked slowly forward before she stood just three feet from him.

"What was that all about?" She asked quietly. Chase instantly knew she heard everything. No questions about that logic.

"Look, it's nothing. My dad probably just wants to get an update on the whole, workers thing. He had no idea I was going to promote Adam. Or hire you, for that matter." Chase said reassuringly as he took Bree's hands into his own. She smiled up at him.

"Thank you, Chase." She sighed as she pulled him in for a hug. She rested her head against his chest as he wrapped his arms around her waist. Her hands laid lazily around his neck.

"For what?" Chase whispered down at her. She moved ever so slightly so only her chin was against his chest.

"For taking the time to get to know me. For making sure you could keep my job even though I just started yesterday. For probably being the person who knows me the best in the world." She said lowly, but calmly. Chase could listen to her voice all day. He smiled.

"You're welcome, Bree. I'd do anything for you." Chase said quietly. She smiled again.

"You would?" Bree questioned with a sly smile.

"Yes... What do you have in mind?" Chase asked quickly, worried it would lead him to a play he would never return from.

"Will you be my date to my sister's wedding? I don't want them to think that I still don't have a boyfriend." Bree finished with a sigh.

"Oh. Yeah, sure. That's the kind of thing friends do for each other. Right?" Chase replied nonchalantly. He was hoping Bree would say otherwise, that this was the sort of thing more than friends would do for each other.

"No, that's the kind of thing best friends do for each other." Bree corrected before she started to make her way to the door.

"Thanks for today, Chase. I had a really great time. I should probably get home, though. I'll see you tomorrow." Bree said quickly. She was hiding her face as she left.

"Bye, Bree." Chase said quietly as he closed the door. He sighed as leaned his head against the door. All that was running through his head was one thought. One thought that kept on running through his head over and over again. Killing him, slowly at every word.

I cannot believe, I just got friend-zoned.
