the warm afternoon air which filtered through the open window was a promise that spring days were to come and the bitter winter was coming to an end.

her room was filled with the steady, calming voice of mac miller, which was an unusual choice for herself personally but nonetheless matched the current mood around her. she sighed, running her hands through her hair as her eyes darted around her closet trying to find the right pieces of clothing. she didn't want to go to this party but that didn't mean she was going to not put thought into her outfit.

parties had never really been her scene. the loud music, foggy air and bodies which drunkenly shoved against you was not something she found appealing. nor was she a fan of large crowds of people especially when they tried to prod at the small bubble she kept herself in. luckily, most backed off as soon as she sent them a glare when they tried to talk to her.

but, she had promised kenzie she would come who had begged her relentlessly before bribing her with free food, vivienne's shell eventually crumbling as she agreed.

however, now she regretted the decision as she looked over at her clothes-filled floor. just as she was about to give up and call kenzie to cancel, she noticed a stunning lace top buried under her other clothing. an outfit instantly forming in her mind as she flicked through her closet before finding her favourite jean skirt and pairing it with a giant belt.

she allowed herself a moment of peace as she did her makeup. it was like second nature as she delicately used her brush to help define her features. not long later she was placing lipstick on her lips as she smiled satisfied with her look.

to finish her routine, she adorned herself with jewellery from small hoop earrings to dainty bracelets till she felt prepared enough for the night ahead.

she left her house, unaware that this night will lead to her eventually questioning her own ways.

he grinned as he continued to listen to nick's rambling, each word dramatic as he moved his hands to emphasis his words.

chris was barely listening his gaze at kenzie and the way her smile lit up her whole face. nate wanted to throw up at the lovesick look in chris' eyes as he stared so intently at his girlfriend.

matt was also listening, his social battery still holding on as he laughed at nick's dramatics.

something caught kenzie's eyes as she gasped, "vivi is actually here! i'm gonna go get her" she exclaimed excitedly as she walked off, lost in between the crowds of people.

"vivi?" nate questioned, as chris was brought out of his daydreams and smiled.

"yeah vivienne, i've only met her a couple times she's kenzie's best friend and she's nice...well once she decides your deserving of her kindness" chris explained with a chuckle, reminded of how he was fully convinced she hated him when they first met.

before anyone could say anything they saw kenzie returning with another girl following behind her who was didn't seem like she wanted to be here.

"guys this is vivvinne" ken spoke, clearly excited as she pointed to her friend. "this is matt, nick, nate and you know chris"

she gave them a tight lipped smile, "nice to meet you guys"

"could at least pretend you like us" chris teased and she let the smallest smile fall on her face, a genuine one before it fell again.

the conversation flowed smoothly between them all as they laughed and shared stories. nate noticed the way she stayed quiet most of the time but it was clear she was listening and enjoying herself even if it was just slightly.

at one point the girls walked off wanting more to drink and chris and nick also wandered off, likely to get high.

matt and nate had both driven here so remained in the corner, observing others as they chatted.

"i'm happy for chris" matt pointed out as they both watched the way ken giggled leaning against chris while he watched her so adoringly.

"never thought he would settle down" nate admitted and matt chuckled agreeing. "what about you? gonna settle at any point?" matt teased looking over at nate who shaked his head.

"nah, i don't think the whole romance thing is for me" he spoke confidently as matt just hummed. his eyes then caught vivienne who was stumbling past people.

before he could stop himself he walked over to her, "hey you okay?" he asked, amused at the way her eyes dilated and how her eyebrows scrunched in confusion.

"i'm fineee" her words slurred as she nearly tripped, grabbing his bicep instinctively. her hand was soft and he felt his skin tingle though she pulled away quickly, staring at where her own hand had been in confusion.

"you're drunk." he stated as she laughed. "yeah no shit but i'm fine" she replied turning to walk away and nearly walking into a wall.

"okay so you are not fine" he pointed out as she glared at him, not appreciating him being in her business, it was not like he actually cared anyways.

his eyes quickly flickered around the room, chris and ken were clearly out of it as well and nick was seemingly flirting with a guy he'd met, while matt was scrolling on his phone.

he sighed before pulling out his phone and telling matt he'd drive vivienne home.

"come on, let's go" he looked back over at vivienne as his hand ghosted her back, trying to lead her out the room.

she seemed to accept her fate as she followed him till they got outside and then she suddenly stopped.

he looked over at her confused as she just stared ahead for a moment. there was a pause before she spoke. "wait where are we going?"

"i'm taking you home" he explained as he tried to get her to follow him to the car but she just stared at him perplexed.

"how do you know where i live? stalker much" she stared at him skeptically as he sighed. "matt had your address cause he was originally gonna drive you all home but i knew the others would wanna stay longer so i asked him what it was"

she just stayed staring at him with an unreadable expression before she sighed and finally followed him, her steps wobbly. nate kept a hand hovering beside her incase she fell as they silently walked to his car.

when they got to his car, she refused to let him help as she sat in the passenger seat and struggled for a moment with her seatbelt as he sat on the drivers side, watching her with a smile.

he started to drive the silence envelops them as he watches her through the corner of his eye.

"how'd you and ken meet?" he asks, done with the quiet in the car.

silence.

he looks over at her for a moment but she keeps her gaze on the window. "we had a class together in highschool" she mumbled so quiet he almost missed it but he smiled. though he didn't know her well something told him that she often didn't talk about herself and it might just be that she's drunk which is why she told him but nevertheless he smiled.

he saw how throughout the night she'd let slip a small smile, reserved for those she allowed in like ken. the ones she believed deserved to know her and he wasn't sure why but he wanted to be part of that  small inner circle. he was gonna make it a goal to be let in.

"you don't let people in easily" he observed out loud as she hummed in agreement.

"is there a reason to that?" he asked, intrigued about anything to do with vivienne. "we'll never be close enough for you to find out" she replied after a moment.

he laughed, "you'll see, eventually you will let me in", she scoffed "in your dreams".

"you don't think i will succeed?" he wondered. she thought about it only for a second before she replied "i think our personalities clash too much for it to ever work" her words were confident as if it was sealed in fate that they could never be friends.

"how happy you are is genuinely disgusting" she added as an afterthought as he burst out into laughter, his first time hearing someone didn't like his positive attitude.

"one day you'll find my happiness tolerable" he promised as she scoffed, not believing him. they fell into silence once again as he eventually reached her house.

he knew she was wrong and he'd prove it. he couldn't explain it but he wanted to get to know her, more than she let others know.
