Stormy Sleepover Part Two
-this sort of went off the rails but I hope it's the kind of garbage you're here for...-
"Are the kids asleep?" Bruce asked, leaning in the doorway of the cinema room, lit only by the rolling credits of Friday the 13th.
"Uh, B, they're not kids, they're young adults." Jason said mockingly. "And yeah. We practically had to carry them upstairs."
Bruce tuned out Jason's stupidity, as he was apt to do. "Okay, well, I need two to cover the west side, and one to assist with the bust downtown."
"NOT IT!"
"NOT-- Hey!" Tim kicked his brother and got up. "Fine."
"Great, It's you, Damian, and one of the girls." Bruce turned to leave. "Meet in the cave in ten."
Tim groaned, booting Jason again and passing him "Why do you wanna stay home so bad? Wanna finally study for your test?"
Jason let out a bark of laughter. "No! Just gonna give them a little spook!"
"You're an asshole." Tim yawned, passing him. "Try not to traumatize them? They're jumpy enough."
Jason snorted but otherwise ignored his big brother as he left. he had work to do; it was a terrible rainstorm, they were in a manor, they'd just watched a slasher movie, and most of the adult figures were inexplicably leaving. this was the perfect set-up for scaring little kids. or, y'know, a group of emotionally stunted young teens.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Robin? Psst! Dick?" Wally rubbed his eyes and forced himself to sit up. He's been splayed across a bed with Dick and Artemis, but the other's weren't in sight. right, they'd been placed in a guest room. "Guys?" He yawned, but the duo was--- out cold. Trust the Gothamites to sleep through torrential rain and thunder!
Half asleep, he unlocked the door and hobbled across to the guest room with the dim white light glowing under the door. He tapped the door, only for it to swing open.
Kaldur squinted up at him, pained, holding his phone, checking the time.
Nobody was on the king-size bed, M'gann was floating, Kaldur was on the floor, and Conner was elsewhere (Wally assumed, in the closet).
"Wally?"
"I woke up. the storm's wild." He closed the door and sat across from Kaldur, both of them lit from beneath by the light of the phone, like they were telling campfire stories.
Kaldur nodded. "I haven't been to sleep yet."
"How late is it?"
Kaldur held up his phone; "11:35 pm. "
"Not too bad." The redhead reconciled. "Is anyone else up?"
"mm." a voice murmured from across the room. They turned to see M'gann roll over mid-air. "Hey Wally."
"Hi."
"Did we wake you up?" Kaldur asked apologetically.
"mmaybe?" She grumbled. "It's fine. It's always hard sleeping in a new place."
"Sorry." Wally muttered sincerely. "The Gotham kids are still asleep. How's himself?"
Kaldur glanced at the closet across the room. "I didn't want to bother him by checking in."
"Makes sense." Wally agreed, ruffling his hair. "we should probably keep an eye on the time. At least a few of the bats are out fighting crime in this weather, and if they come back and hear us awake, They'll be pissed."
"maybe we should help them?" M'gann suggested.
"no!" The boys said in unison. "Bats are territorial." Wally told them. "to them, they've been employee of the month for ten years, and we're interns on our first day." He paused and listened intently, lowering his voice to a stage whisper again. "even if Alfred catches us awake, we'll be in trouble."
"will he be mad?" Kaldur asked worriedly. He was supposed to be the grownup, mature one of the team (which definitely wasn't a misconception built on his trauma from mandatory military service from ages 12-14). He was convinced that he was supposed to be the adult of the all-teen group.
"Alfie? No, he'll just give us the look." Kaldur looked even more scared of that. "then he'll probably force us into bed and supervise us to ensure we're sleeping."
"do butlers do that?" M'gann said.
"He doubles as a nanny." Wally explained. He lowered his voice again. "seriously, he raised Batman, we're small potatoes to him."
"SHUT. UP."
The three fell silent. "sorry, Conner." Wally stood, now that all three of his Aliens were awake. "Let's go see if that woke them up."
Ironically, it didn't. Artemis and Dick were still fast asleep when they checked; hall light splashing into the room to illuminate their features.
"I didn't know they were such Deep sleepers?" M'gann wondered aloud.
"That's cause Rob doesn't really sleep unless he's somewhere he knows is safe. Otherwise, like half his brain is still awake, listening for threats." Wally leaned across and bopped his nose. "See? Out like a light."
Artemis tossed over in her sleep, hee fingers crept over and grabbed a loose fistful of Dick's hair. Kaldur firmly brushed her arm away.
Artemis' fingers wrapped around his arm, she pulled him onto the bed and held him down. "Gotcha!"
Wally stumbled back, mouth agape. "How long have you been awake?"
"Since I heard M'gann's voice." She laughed, shoving fistfuls of loose hair out of her face. "Oh, Sorry Kal. I thought you were Wally."
THUNK
The five teens started, looking down at the wooden floor beneath them.
"What was that?"
"A noise." Conner said, hiding against the doorframe.
"Probably one of his siblings going for a midnight snack."
"Nah," Artemis replied. "at this time the Bats will be out and about on the rooftops of Gotham."
"The butler?"
"Please, Alfred is the quietest 74-year-old in the world!" Wally proclaimed. "Can't be him."
"He's 74?" Conner asked.
"I think?"
"Uh, guys." M'gann swallowed hard, they weren't sure how to suggest this. "So, in season one, episode sixteen, Meghan and her friends are saving up money for prom dresses, so they get hired to babysit at the old house..."
"And?" Artemis prompted, rubbing dust from her eyes.
"Well, a bunch of strange things start happening, and they think that it has dead people in it. Like without bodies!"
"A haunted house?" Wally asked.
"Yes! Exactly!"
"Pfft. No way. It's an old house, it makes noises." Artemis assured. "Probably plumbing or something."
"and I'm sure Robin would have told us if there was something in the house." Kaldur pet M'gann's shoulder to calm them.
"Stop scaring yourself, Megs. There are no ghosts here."
THUNK
They looked around at each other.
"I'm waking up Robin." Conner muttered, finally entering the room and heading for the bed with intent.
"No." Kaldur took him by the shoulders and redirected him into his partner's arms. "There's no point in worrying him when it's probably nothing."
"Nothing doesn't make noise." Conner said. "So there has to be something."
"Hey, look, I'll go downstairs and check." Artemis hauled herself off the bed, tightening the drawstring of the pyjama bottoms she was given.
"Are you sure?"
"Duh," she said. "I'll be right back."
"Don't say you'll be right back! Haven't you seen Scream?" Wally asked. "Do you want to die?"
"Wall, I'm queer and POC. there is no way I'd survive a slasher." She said. She pushed the door open.
"I'll come." Kaldur said, refusing to let her do off on her own.
"Kal, you're Gay and Black, you'd be killed first. "You're only chance of surviving is if you're a virgin, which I find hard to believe."
"Movies aside, I am responsible for the team-- even off hours, so I want to come."
"Kaldur, how are you not being paied?" Wally yawned. "The league is using you!"
Conner followed Kaldur into the hallway. M'gann didn't want to stay without Kaldur or Conner, and Wally was torn."I can't leave Dick alone."
"Alright, keep vigilant just in case." Kaldur asked. "We'll be right back."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jason was starting to get bored. he knew they were awake, there were lights on under the doors upstairs. Where the kids that oblivious? He kicked the wall again to make a louder thunk, maybe he'd done it wrong? maybe the kids were so scared that they wouldn't go downstairs.
Suddenly, there was a patter of nervous footsteps on the stairs. Finally!
"Where were the noises coming from?" a voice called out, followedby several shushes. "What?"
"We're trying to be quiet." Another voice whispered.
"Why?"
"Shh!" Another joined in
"Stop it! I just want to know why!"
"We're trying not to give ourselves away."
"Why?"
"Stealth. Now-- inside voices!"
Stealth! Jason tried his best not to laugh, these kids thought they were ninjas but they were dressed head-to-toe in reflective gear. He almost felt too bad to mess with them when they were this oblivious. almost.
He kicked the wall again, grinning.
"Another noise!"
"Shh!"
"SHhh!
"ShHHHH!"
"Shh, let's spread out."
Jason rolled his eyes and slunk to the next room. Jason might not be the sneakiest of his siblings, but even the clumsiest Robin was slinkier than every non-Robin. He could hear each of them disperse through the downstairs. They better not wake up Alfred, that would ruin the fun!
He tapped the vent to make the ones in surrounding rooms rattle. He heard a couple jumps, but no talking, that meant that lil' miss mars was with them the three he'd heard bickering: The loud speaker, Nessy, and Roy 2.0 (No one tell Roy he said that).
Playfully, he opened the fridge door an inch and darted down the old servant's hall into the laundry room, listening as the cats in this cat-mouse game ran into the kitchen.
Without a word (definitely mind reading) the kids started down the hall. Jason readied himself. this was going to be great.
Three...
Two...
One...
Oh, that beautiful sound of scaring the shit out of innocent children. He ducked out from the doorway, hissing.
"HOLY SHIT!" little bow jumped back into the little sea monster.
Jason immediately shot back in before his face could get crushed by a panicked Kryptonian.
"OH MY GOD!" Space-Enby shrieked, before doing silent for a second. "Was that Robin's brother?"
Superboy clearly didn't care because his fist was stuck in the drywall. He struggled to free himself, making Jason feel very unthreatened. He let a little cough out which became a hesitant chuckle, and then a laugh. He gripped his ribs, quaking as the laughter boiled over him. "Fucking dumbass..." He staggered backwards to escape before supes freed himself and went full bull-in-china-shop, but instead of the other door, he found something blonde.
"Quit being so loud, asshole. I have a hair appointment tomorrow." Stephanie snapped. "You woke me up trying to scare these fuckers-- guys."
"Trying? I was succeeding. Besides, I'm done now so tough."
"No, you can't scare nearly as much as I could scare you asshole."
"How?" He laughed, walking around her and heading to the servant's stairs.
She just watched him go. "I told Alfred on you, musty hoe."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dick was awake when they came upstairs. He was sleepy and leaning all over Wally, but otherwise pretty standard.
"I hear Jason fucked with you." He said. "I heard Alfred."
"Yeah ripped him a new one right outside." Wally agreed. "What are your guy's chances of going back to sleep?"
"Literally none." M'gann groaned, still clutching her friend's arm.
"With that kind of shame? Please." Artemis groaned, flopping on the bed. "Let's watch something.
"No way." Dick yawned. "It's a girls night. We gotta do makeovers ."
