chapter fourteen

The weekend came quickly and between classes and everything else going on. Ella and Layla had barely any time to just talk amongst themselves. That was until the weekend. Lots of the students had already headed off to Hogsmeade for the weekend trip but Ella had decided to stay behind. Her and Layla lying in their dorm, doing nothing in particular.

"We never did get to talk about you and Lily," Ella muttered as she rolled over to face the girl. Layla had a book out and had been doing some peaceful studying until that question. Layla looked over and tilted her head slightly. She was just unsure where Ella was going with this but was curious nonetheless, "You said you had feelin's for 'er?" Ella asked after a moment. Layla nodded slowly before closing her book.

"Uh, yeah. I guess so. I just realised how much I liked being around her," Layla muttered as she adjusted. Her fingers messing with the edge of the book. Clear signs to Ella of the anxious feelings so Ella crawled off the bed and moved to sit in front of Layla, "She's just so gorgeous," She added after a moment. Ella grinned.

"We don't have to talk about it if you don't want to but just know I'd accept you whatever your feelings," Ella said as she reached her hands out to take Layla's. The brunette was reluctant to let Ella hold her hands but eventually did. The two of them just sitting there, comfortable before Layla let the smile spread across her face. If she being totally honest, she was terrified of what Ella would say or react. Many people would not be so accepting but it seemed Ella didn't even care.

"I don't even know my feelings for Lily so talk to me about James or your dad or something. I want to try and help, we've barely spoken," Layla said as she picked up a book and discarded it on the bedside table. Ella then decided to lie down on the bed, moving next to Layla. The fringed-girl joining her side as they stared up at the ceiling.

"Don't get me started on either of 'em, honestly," Ella muttered as she let her eyes close. A soft chuckle escaping her lips, "But I stood up to my father. That tosser thought I'd just accept him love. The delusional wanker," Ella said as she opened her eyes to look to Layla. Her smile had appeared and she seemed to be suppressing a laugh, the corners of her eyes crinkled, "What?" Ella asked, a small pout on her lips. Layla chuckled softly.

"The imagine of you shouting at him is just amusing. You're tiny compared to him," Layla smiled widely. Ella rolled her eyes and whacked her friend on the arm for her words. She wasn't that small compared to her father. It was a few inches, if that.

"I am not," Ella muttered before she let her arm rest over her face. A soft huff escaping her lips. Layla sighed softly and rolled onto her side, pulling Ella's arms away.

"You're not usually this down. Is it because of James?" Layla asked softly as she hugged her friend's arm close to her. Ella sighed softly and nodded, the tears pricking her eyes at the mention of the boy. It just made Ella's heartache, losing him was like losing a part of her. She felt incomplete without his stupid smiles, "Come on, don't cry. Hey," Layla quickly said, moving to pull Ella closer. Tears falling down Ella's cheeks but she was quick to just wrap her arms around Layla, sighing softly, "Talk to me about it," Layla whispered softly, wanting her friend to open up a bit more. If they could talk it through, Layla was hoping Ella could find a way to move on.

"It's just... I must have told him when I was drunk. I don't even know what I could have said to 'im that freaked him out so much. He spoke to me but he was always so stand-offish and weird. It was like 'e didn't want me around anymore and I couldn't work out why. And then Christmas Eve, I went to speak to him cause I just wanted to know before Christmas. I wanted us to be okay and I needed to talk to about my dad. He just listens, ya know," Ella began. Her words just seemingly flowing out without much thought. It was all built up and she was thankful to get it out. However, at her last words, she paused, "Not that you don't listen, just he understands my life and he's been with me for like my whole life so he can understand that more. Not that you can't," Ella rambled, wanting desperately not to offend Layla. She was already so afraid of misstepping and losing her friend again.

"It's alright. I understand, keep going," Layla said softly, stroking Ella's hair in an attempt to calm her down. She had yet to fall to hysterical sobs but with Ella's shaky words and the tears falling, it was only a matter of time. Layla just wanted to try and prevent that to some extent.

"It's just, I wanted to talk to him and I went to. Then he started going on at me when I asked what was wrong. He was so confusing. It's like he was angry but also desperate for me to be lying about it. He didn't make any sense and the more I look back at it, the worst it looks but also the more confused I am and sad and just heartbroken. He said..." Ella trailed off. The words still hurt her, "He said that it wasn't my love he wanted," She said, almost spitting the words. Her hands balling into fists before she finally just let the soft sob escape. It was those words that hurt her most. She could have lived with him not loving her or wanting her. She could have been friends with him but the way his said those words. It made her want to never see him again, "I would have been fine with his rejection if he hadn't bloody said that," Ella said as he rolled onto her back. Her hand coming up to wipe the tears away. Another soft sob escaping her lips before she tried to get a hold of herself.

"Hey, hey, it's alright. He's not worth your tears, El. He's messing you about, come on, he doesn't deserve your tears," Layla muttered softly as she pushed her friend's hair out of her face. A soft sigh escaped her lips and Layla could feel the anger herself. Layla could understand how upset Ella was and the way it clearly broke her frustrated Layla to no end.

"Yet I still fucking love him and I miss him. I want to bloody be around that tosser and I don't know why," Ella said, chuckling at her own stupidness. The tears still falling as she ran her hands through her hair. Her teeth gritting as she let out a loud sigh.

"That's love, El. Come on, do you want to do something to distract you?" Layla asked softly. Ella nodded and looked up to her friend, wondering what she had in mind. Nobody was around so whatever it was, it had to involve something interesting. Layla grinned and moved off the bed, holding a hand out to the brunette.

"What are we going to do?" Ella asked, cautiously taking Layla's hand. The two of them getting up. Layla's grin only seemed to widen as she grabbed both of their wands off the side. Ella took hers back and raised an eyebrow. Unsure of what to even think but Layla just began to walk with her, dragging her along the way. It seemed she had a plan.

"You'll see," Layla said as they walked across the Common Room. It was considerably empty due to the Hogsmeade trip and that was exactly how it should be. Layla then began to guide Ella up to the boy's dorms which is when Ella pulled her hand back, cocking an eyebrow.

"Why are we going here?" Ella asked, unsure whether to trust Layla or not. She was angry at the boys and angry at a lot of things for how sad she just always felt because of James. But, she didn't want to anger them. She didn't want to do anything cruel. James may have been cruel to her but she wasn't willing to return the favour. She would be better than him.

"We're going to turn James' stuff into rubber ducks. Come on, it's harmless. He knows the counter-curse. It'll just make him think for a bit," Layla said, grabbing Ella and pulling her up the stairs. Ella didn't seem to have a choice in this plan and she wasn't entirely sure if it was a good one. Layla knocked on the door to the boy's dorm but found no answer. A soft 'alohamora' had the door open and Layla walked up, pulling a disgusted face at the smell, "You find that attractive?" Layla asked, a teasing smile on her face. Ella rolled her eyes and scrubbed the tears from her cheeks.

"Shut up. I find James attractive," Ella muttered as she looked around the room. The last time she had been in here was with James. One of the last nights they had spent together. They had studied Potions for a little while and then he had had his way with her. It was a memory that had once made her smile, now it just made her heartache, "I'm gonna fail Potions without James," Ella muttered softly as she crossed to his bedside. Layla tilted her head.

"You've got me. You don't need him anymore," Layla said as she reached out to take a frame off the side. When she turned it over, Layla discovered that it was a picture frame with shattered glass. A picture of James' family and Ella's family. Ella's second present that James' had attempted to return but failed at. That made Layla pause but instead, she pulled her wand out and said the charm. It quickly turned into a rubber duck in her palm, a grin on her lips.

"You're cruel," Ella muttered as she walked to the bedside table. Her hands wondering across the surface of it and looked over what he had. It was curiosity more than anything but what she found made her heart hurt more. Her fingers pushed back the edge of parchment and she found a letter written to her on it.

Ella stared at it for a moment and lifted it up. She knew it was wrong. It was a letter that he hadn't sent. A letter that was either from before he hated her or from afterwards talking about his hate for her. But as Ella read the first paragraph, all she felt was heartache. The tears appearing in her eyes as she read his heartfelt compliments.

But Ella didn't read anymore, skimming over it and the words at the bottom made her heart quite literally shatter. The handwriting hadn't really even looked like James and now she realised that it very much wasn't James at all. It was Remus, the note at the bottom making it clear it was just something he had wrote to try and show James what he needed to write.

Clearly he hadn't wrote anything like it so Ella turned it into a rubber duck. Blinking back the tears as she discarded the small duck on the side. A soft sigh escaping her lips. Layla had been watching for a moment and the way her friend's face contorted from sadness to anger threw her off. Ella was never usually like this but something had happened.

"What was that?" Layla asked as she spelled a few more possessions into rubber ducks. Ella shrugged and then began to spell a few more things. The two falling into silence as they did so. Ella had nothing more to say, she didn't want to talk so instead she just continued to turn everything into rubber ducks. Lastly the bed was turned into a duck and it was the size of Ella's palm when the spell was done.

A small smile appeared on Ella's face as she stepped back and looked at their handywork. The two had briefly joked about it and now that they could see it in it's true glory. Ella couldn't help but snort, her smile widening.

"He'll have fun with that," Ella said as she turned around towards the door. Layla followed behind, a few soft chuckles escaping her lips as she imagined the boy's reactions. But before Ella left, she decided to leave a note. She walked to Remus' bedside table and grabbed the quill and parchment. She scribbled a quick note to Remus basically briefly explaining the situation and saying that there is no point in getting James to say anything because he's an idiot who doesn't feel the same way. Once the note was finished, Ella then walked out.

The two girls giggling as they walked down to the Common Room. James, unknown to both of them, had returned not a few seconds earlier and when he saw the two girls coming from there, he was definitely confused. All of his friends had been with them at Hogsmeade so why were they up there? The two girls took no notice of him, instead going back up to their own dorm. Muttering and laughing at the various places they could imagine the boy's pulling at the discovery.

Everyone had recieved their exam grades that morning. It a few weeks later than what Ella had expected but she at least had them. She had them and she was frankly disappointed. Her grades all seemed marginally lower than she expected and despite her doing better in Potions, she was so close to failing again. This time, however, she didn't even have James to help her.

So as she went to Muggle Studies, she felt like there was no point in even trying anymore. Her expectations for herself had been so high and now they had been crushed by some grades that didn't even matter. They mattered to Ella, though, and that was the worst thing. They were supposed to be accurate grades for what she would get on the NEWTs in the summer yet as she stared at them, she couldn't help but feel her stomach twist.

If those were her final grades when she left Hogwarts, she would be disappointed in herself more than anyone could ever understood. A soft sigh passed her lips as she stuffed the paper back into her satchel, pushing the door to the Muggle Studies class open. Most people were already sat down, chatting excitedly about their grades and of course, comparing. No matter what the teachers said, people always would.

But Ella was in no mood to do that. So, she crossed to her seat and slumped down into her chair and prayed that her teacher would actually pay attention today and get the class started quickly. But as she sat down with a frown on her lips and a general aura of sadness, Remus turned to face her. He had promptly ended his conversation with the boy across from them and focused on Ella.

"What's wrong?" He asked curiously. The two had spoken a few times since the common room but Remus had been almost avoiding her. Especially after Kalia discovered the letter that Remus had wrote in an attempt to show James what he needed to say. Frankly, the blonde was frustrated at Remus but it hadn't taken long to realise the situation. Either way, it made Remus cautious to be around Ella. She didn't want to lose Kalia after everything they had been through.

"Nothin', Remus. Go back to talkin' to 'em," Ella said dismissively, waving her hand towards the boy. She reached into her bag and pulled out her quill, ink and parchment. A few textbooks coming out alongside it as she flicked through them, trying to focus on the work rather than Remus' gaze. He was burning a hole into the side of her skull and she gave him a side eye, cocking her eyebrow at the boy. He was waiting for her to tell him what was really going on, "My exam results were terrible," She responded finally giving in. Her hand dipped into her satchel and plucked out the sheet, showing them to Remus.

The boy promptly began to frown, checking the back as if to make sure these were really her results. Somehow that just made Ella's heart ache that little bit more. Even he was disappointed in her, she couldn't imagine how the teacher's were feeling.

"Are you sure these are yours?" Remus asked incredulously as he handed them back. Ella rolled her eyes at his words and stuffed the parchment back into her bag again. She didn't want anyone else to see, it was embarrassing enough that he had seen them.

"Yes. I doubt they messed it up." Ella responded sharply. Her hand darted out to grab her quill and she was quick to begin writing the title written on the chalkboard, "I'm just clearly not as good as I thought I was," She muttered under her breath. Usually exams like this didn't bother her and she could let them slide but this was her final year. She barely had time to improve herself so if she was terrible now, she always would be.

"You were under a lot of stress. I doubt that's a true reflection. Plus, teachers are notorious for marking people down to make them work harder," Remus added. Trying his best to comfort her with logic but it only made Ella scoff. She rolled her eyes and flicked through a few pages. If the teacher wasn't going to start the lesson then Ella was. The bell had already gone a few minutes earlier.

"I work 'ard enough as it is and if they are 'notorious' for it, what's your grades?" Ella asked, almost mocking in her manner. Her gaze flicking to his face. A soft sigh escaped Remus' lip and he didn't say a word. Instead, he grabbed his own quill and began to begin his notes. Ella chuckled humorlessly knowing her point had been proven.

Remus wasn't sure what to say from there but after a moment, he looked back up to her. Placing his quill down as he thought it through. He glanced at the teacher who was now stood up at the chalkboard which meant they had a few minutes before she began talking.

"Do you want to go together for prefect duty?" Remus asked curiously. They had neglected to do so next week but he had a feeling that if he could get her alone, he could find out what else had been happening. Between James moping and Ella avoiding everyone he hadn't exactly had the most opportunities to see her.

"Sure." Ella said, not saying much more as she continued with her note-taking on the page she was on. Remus opened his mouth to speak again but the teacher began to talk. Her voice loud and booming and it seemed she had had enough of the class. Ella was, as always, unaffected by the teacher and as she began to talk, Ella grabbed her led pencil.

The talking was something she could listen to and take in but as the lesson dragged on, she began to take notes less. It was odd of her and as Remus watched her sketch across the page with her pencil, he furrowed his eyebrows. However before he could whisper at her to pay attention or say anything, he was called upon to answer a question. He managed to stumble out a response while Ella just seemed to daze.

The brunette only went back to her note-taking when the class had gone silent and Remus was writing. It was then that she scribbled some notes down. Most of which was probably inaccurate to what the teacher was saying but Ella couldn't care anymore. She was going to fail it seemed and there was a part of her that was accepting that now.

So, when the bell for the end of class finally went, it was a mercy. Ella packed her bags quickly and got out of the classroom before anyone else could. Her feet carrying her to the next lesson on automatic. Her mind wondering elsewhere as she strolled through the corridors. She wasn't sure why she had agreed to be around Remus that night. Between the letter she had read and the exams, she knew she would most likely breakdown in front of him. Once again exposing herself to someone who she doubted even truly cared for her all that much.

As the day went on and Ella grew more exhausted, her dread for her prefect duty grew. It had been a last minute push from Layla that even meant she did it. Though she had slowly walked to the corridor where Remus was stood. His hands in the pockets of his robes as he looked around. He was definitely waiting for and that made her gut twist in anxiety.

"'Iya," She called from the other side of the hallway. Feigning happiness as she walked the rest of the way normally. She could at least pretend for a bit. Half an hour of pretending to be okay was nothing. She had spent most of the past year faking her emotions for everyone around her. Half an hour was nothing in comparision but this was Remus. He always seemed to know what she didn't want him to know.

"Hey. I began to think you weren't coming," He commented and Ella shook her head, plastering the smile onto her face. Remus knew it was fake the second he saw it but wondered how long she would keep up the facade. There was only so much she could do. Remus had learnt that from James.

"I would never leave ya alone," Ella said, her voice chipper. Completely the opposite of how she was earlier that day. Her hands swung at her sides as she began to walk down the corridor. Remus joining her, it was now blatantly obvious that she did not feel as good as she was letting on. He gave her the side-eye as he debated over what to do.

"I'm glad." He said after a moment. The awkward silence quickly filling the corridors as they strolled down. Ella ran her fingers through the ends of her hair, twirling it around her fingers before she glanced around. When Remus wasn't looking, she let her face fall. The smile was too hard to keep up all the time. She could feel herself crumbling under his scrutiny.

"We need to talk," Remus said after another few moments of silence. Ella let out a soft sigh at his words but it wasn't like it was totally unexpected. They did need to talk about everything. The letter, James. Everything because nothing made sense and Ella felt like she was suffocating under the weight of the world. She was sure she was going to drown.

"We do," Ella muttered and Remus sighed. He glanced around and then walked over to a classroom door. He pushed the door and was surprised to find that it opened. He gestured for Ella to walk in and she did so. The classroom was empty but clearly had been used that day. The textbooks scattered across desks that had yet to be cleaned away. Ella took no note, just watched as Remus lit up the room with a wave of his wand.

"I can't just pretend like I don't know you're not okay," Remus said as he moved to sit on the edge of a desk. Ella watched him for a moment before she followed him over. Rather than keeping up the facade of happiness, she just let her frown fall. The tears suddenly pricking her eyes before she blinked them away, her gaze fixed on the ceiling as she tapped her nails.

"You 'ave no idea," She muttered softly before she met his gaze that was boring into her. He tilted his head a little, looking her in the eyes. Ella swallowed the lump in her throat. She couldn't cry in front of Remus... not again. He had his own issues and the fact that Ella continued to push her issues onto him was selfish. She knew it was but he kept asking. She didn't know how to stop herself.

"Tell me what's wrong. I can't just watch you like this anymore. Either of you, James will barely tell me a word of what actually happened," Remus said as he pushed himself to full sit on the desk. Ella let out a soft sigh, having to recount the whole thing to Layla was painful enough and that was barely scratching the surface.

"It's not even just James but I'll start there," Ella muttered. She pushed her fingers through her hair and let out a soft sigh, "It was Christmas Eve. I had just wrapped the presents and I went upstairs to talk to 'im. I didn't want to argue with 'im, 'e had just been ignoring me basically this whole time. So I wanted to sort it out, I came in and one thing led to another and we were arguing. 'e knew about what I had said and 'e decided that Christmas Eve was the best time to pick a fight over my feelin's. So we argued about it. He was actin' like I could control my feelin's and it was solely my fault I developed them. I tried to explain what actually happened but he was just so indenial and he told me that he doesn't want my love.... He was actin' like me being in love with 'im would kill 'im... It was like... a kick in the gut," She managed. The tears filled her eyes now and she tried her best to blink them away but they were stubborn. Instead they blurred her vision as she moved her gaze to the floor.

"He didn't mean that," Remus muttered and Ella rolled her eyes. A few stray tears falling down her cheeks before she looked up to him. Her hands resting in her lap. She didn't understand how Remus could say that.

"'e may be an oblivious idiot but 'e means what 'e says and why hasn't 'e apologised? You were clearly trying to get 'im to with that stupid letter," Ella said, throwing her hand up in the air. Her tears falling more frequently now as she tried her best to scrub them away. Her breathe got caught in her throat and she tried her best to stay calm despite her heavier breaths. She was on the verge of sobbing already.

"So you saw that..." Remus muttered and Ella nodded her head. A few more tears rolling down as she took a few more deep breaths. She just wanted to be okay but that seemed impossible now. As she sat across from Remus, the weight only felt heavier, crushing her.

"Yes! I did! I thought it was from 'im and it crushed me to realise it was just you tryin' to show 'im what 'e needed to do! 'e hasn't even done it!" Ella shouted, her voice raising before she ended up letting out a sob. Her hand covering her mouth as she stared off at the wall. She hated this, she hated all of it. James had left her, abandoned her and she needed him. She just needed him. More than anything else in the world.

"I know he hasn't. I was trying to get him to do something but he's James... you know what he's like. Just give him time, Ella," Remus said quickly as Ella just continued to let out soft sobs. Her gaze moving to the floor as one of her arms wrapped around herself, she just wanted to feel safe away from everyone. She wished she could just be safe.

"'e's h-had time..." Ella managed through another soft sob. Her eyes squeezing shut as the tears fell. She needed to control herself, "It's.. It's been a month..." She added after a moment. The reminder of how long it had been only made her heart ache more. A month and nothing. He barely looked at her. The last time she spoke to him she was snarky and he didn't even try to come after her. He just stood there and watched her.

She had lost him and he seemed happy enough without her. Ella couldn't help the ache in her chest at that thought. He was content without his best friend while she was breaking down in front of everyone over losing him. Losing his stupid smile and teasing comments. She should have been fine with losing him but every part of her ached.

Remus didn't know what to say to that. Instead he just watched her as Ella tried to control her own sobs. She felt like just crying for the rest of the night but they had a prefect duty and she couldn't be like that. She was pathetic enough as it is. She was meant to be a Gryffindor not some foolish, cowardly girl who cried over everything. She was being ridiculous.

"M'fine," Ellla muttered once she had managed to get her breathing under control. One long breath escaping her lips before she wiped her cheeks. Her eyes were red and puffy. It was obvious that she had been crying but she couldn't do anything about that now, "I just don't belong in this house and I'm sure that James'll never be in love with me. My father is constantly trying to get my attention and my exam results are awful. They are worse than I ever expected and I'm going nowhere in life. That's what is wrong with me Remus," Ella said after a moment. Voicing her fears and worries somehow made her feel only heavier. The burden was now on both of them and her gut was twisting with guilt. He didn't even need to know.

"What do you mean you don't belong in Gryffindor?" Remus asked after a moment watching as Ella got up. The brunette straightened out her robes and cleaned herself off before walking towards the door. Remus rushing after her, a frown on his lips. He knew that Ella had always had doubts about her placing but her words felt so final.

"I'm not brave, I've not got courage. I've not got nerve. I'm sure as 'ell not honest. I constantly lie. I constantly lied to James. I can't just pretend to belong in this 'ouse anymore. I'm not a Gryffindor and I shouldn't be 'ere. I'm only 'ere because of James and I lost 'is friendship because I went against a core value of Gryffindor," Ella responded, her gaze turned to Remus before she pulled the door open. A frown spreading across his face at her words. She didn't seem to be upset this time, however, she just seemed to be content with it.

"You are brave. You have got courage." Remus said quickly as he waved his wand and turned the lights off. He then followed her out of the class, catching up with her and grabbing the sleeve of her wand. Ella whipped around to face him, ready for him to say whatever he was about to. She knew that he would try and convince her otherwise but she didn't care anymore.

"Tell me when I've ever displayed bravery or courage." Ella said, her words were a challenge. One that Remus did not hesitate to take as he stood across from her.

"First year. You helped Peter when he was struggling in Potions. When Slughorn accused Peter of cheating you stood up for what had actually happened. Explaining the situation clearly. Slughorn backed off of Peter from then on." Remus said and Ella rolled her eyes. That was six years ago. She had been young, naive and stupid then, "Second year. James was playing Quidditch and some Hufflepuffs were heckling him as he was learning a new trick. You were quick to cheer him on and shout at the people who were being wankers as you said." Remus continued, not letting her respond yet. He still had a long list, "Third year, you stood up to McGonagall when she was unfairly punishing James and Sirius while letting Henry off. That took an awful lot of nerve and the look on her face was priceless. Fourth year, you were struggling in Herbology and you were honest about your struggle and you got helped. Now you're the best in the class. We don't need to talk about fifth year but sixth year? There was multiple times when you stood up for me and Kalia. You stood up for James and Sirius and Peter when no one asked you to. You shouted at Slughorn... again! Nobody asked you to do that. And this year, there has been plenty of times you have been brave. You confronted James. You told him your feelings and you told me your feelings. Yes, you were scared but you ended up doing it. Even if you had lied in the beginning, you didn't continue to manipulate the situation. You told him the truth and admitted it. You are not a fraud, you belong in this house. You've just been blinded by your emotions that you can't even see yourself for who you are anymore, Remus finished his rant. Ella just stared at him unsure what she was supposed to say. He was right and she knew he was. His rant had showed that but the voice still niggled. However, for now, she ignored it and instead hugged the boy.

Remus smiled softly as he rested his cheek against her head. His arms wrapping tightly around her to keep her close. Ella couldn't help but smile before she pulled away. This time the smile was genuine but she knew that by the time the next day began she wouldn't be okay again. But in that moment, she wanted to be so she let herself be. Remus was right. He was right.

And as the two finished their patrol and walked back to the dorm, Ella was able to keep herself in that positive bubble that made her feel so much better. The two of them joking and grinning at eachother as they walked down the corridor. It felt so much better and Ella had never been more happy to have Remus as her friend.
