Tutorial|How to Shade

Why do we need shading?

Well, for one thing, it looks more realistic. On another note, it looks better with shading.

//Disclaimer: above base belongs to a Deviantart user. My character, but I only tweak the base. It's Cat the Magician from the Dreamer, my fantasy romance steampunk story....gimme a minute of self-promoting here//

First of all, the app I used may be different from the ones you guys do. But regardless, most apps have the same tools the one I used do.

If you use photoshop/paint tool sai/gimp then chances are it offers way more tools than this.

Mine is Ibis Paint X. I'm a mobile user. I draw not by stylus pen, but by my goddamn fingertip.

It's good, but it eats your battery and your storage.
//I wrote story drafts for 3 hours on Google Docs and the battery percentage is the same. I used this app for like 5 minutes and it already took 10% of my battery//

First of all, from what I've learned, the shading needs to follow the light.

See I'm not pro in this part because I usually draw simple character arts, and I just throw in shades wherever I think fits...

You can always browse the internet though! The most reliable sources are in Deviantart because it's full of professional artists.

Mega important rule: never use black/grey for shading

It's dull and it's boring. It's an easy way, but it's not as good as when you use other colours.

People generally shade in red or blue. This is because of the warmest colour/coolest colour factor which depends on the mood of your art...

Here, I have a guide you guys can use from Deviantart! Feel free to experiment around!

With white, you can use any color for shading as long as it's not grey!

But Nori, what is Multiply?
Multiply is a blending mode, it's available everywhere, and I'm sure Picsart users have heard of it too..

Okay, so to show it, I shaded a drawing I did 4 years ago in blue 💙 (i decreased the opacity to look cleaner). Disclaimer: my OC, but I used a base so not entirely my design...

WITHOUT MULTIPLY

WITH MULTIPLY

You see, Multiply helps in blending the colour more with the base colour.

How to multiply??

Here, you make a new layer and draw the shading.

Then change the blending mode to Multiply

And ta-da!!!
I hope it helps you a bit!

Sorry I'm not much of a pro 😅😅
