30. They had won, and everything turned out to be ok. 🕯
Pearl and Mumbo looked at eachother. The plan obviously hadn't worked and it was up to improvisation now. Mumbo stood up and Pearl shortly after.
"Let's settle this," Moons smile faded, shooting a sword out. The two did the same.
Mumbo charged first, trying to get the jump on them, but they swiftly slid to the side. Pearl sliced in their direction and they leaned under Mumbos sword and attempted to stab him but he backed up.
It finally hit Mumbo how hard this fight was going to be. He grabbed Pearl backwards as Moon swung.
"I'll wait if you two need a quick break," They taunted, "After all, a fight is more fun when it's challenging. So far this hasn't been amusing."
Pearl glared at them.
"Pearl, we can't fall for their banter. I know it's hard but we need to focus on defeating them. We need to take opposite sides, eventually we'll have to catch them off guard."
"How? What if we stab eachother? And we can't yell at eachother our next move or they'll know what's coming!"
"We have to trust eachother and have little to no plan. That way, it's harder for them to determine what's coming," Mumbo mumbled to Pearl, she nodded; "Ready when you are then," Moon smiled.
The two charged but ran from different sides, however, Moons reaction time was extremely sharp and they blocked every swing and dodged every jab. "Ugh I thought you were actually cooking up something smart," They groaned. Pearl threw her sword up, Moons eyes followed but she slugged them in the corner of their eye. They stumbled back, their hand covering their new found injury. "Unexpected. You know, it just isn't fair that this a 2 to 1. Since you took a break why don't I take one as well?" They shook their head sarcastically, "I'm positive you wouldn't mind if I called in a little help?"
Moon snapped their fingers and copies of the two formed out of ground but they were off. They're colours were ones of a wax candle. Whites and greys mixed with light beiges and their eyes had no irises or pupils. Mumbo was creeped out by these candle like versions of them, and by the look on Pearls face, it seemed she was too.
"They look like they're made out of wax, should be easy to cut right?" Mumbo questioned,
"Try stabbing yourself tell me if it's easy." Pearl remarked.
"Pleasure to stab you too!" The wax variant of Pearl cheered, and the wax duo immediately jumped to combat.
Their moves were smarter, stronger and faster then normal Pearl and Mumbo could pull off and it was a surprise that they were even still blocking and dodging. Wax Mumbo was silent and fast with coordinated movements. Mumbo was able to get at least one cut in but it wasn't deep and barely affected him. Meanwhile, Pearl was struggling to even keep an eye on her wax counterpart. Pearl was mostly just moving and was getting lucky enough to dodge. She already had a handful of injuries and was running out of energy.
She swung her sword at Wax Pearl, praying it would hit. Wax Pearl avoided the swing by moving backwards and Pearl saw an opportunity.
She grabbed Mumbos shirt from behind and yanked him in front on her as she spun around to face her new opponent.
"What was that for?!" Mumbo yelled.
"Switch!" She panted.
Wax Mumbo examined Pearl but she was already ready, tackling him at the waist. "Feels good to actually attack my opponent!" She breathed, throwing her sword down. Wax Mumbo blocked it with his own and he swung his arms into the side of her head. Pearl rolled off, and struggled to even move. Her body stung and was bruised. A new throbbing in her head kept her stuck to the ground. She was able to feel the footsteps of Wax Mumbos slowly approaching and stopping to linger over her. He raised his sword and swung at the defenseless girl.
He tripped before it hit. She had grabbed his feet and pulled as hard as she could which sent him flying backwords. She shakily stood and grabbed his weapon, using it to stab his chest but tt only made a line, no organs.
Even though it was clear he probably wasn't getting up soon, she still grabbed out her lighter and heated up the sword tip as fast as she could. Once she thought looked ir heated enough, she cut his chest and decapitated him. The unnerving part was that he didn't make a noise the whole time.
Pearl took a second to catch her breath. She noticed Mumbo struggling and an idea floated into her head. She picked up Wax Mumbos head and ran with it, throwing it at Wax Pearl. Mumbos face lit up the moment he realized Pearl had defeated Wax Mumbo and was coming to help him. Wax Pearls attention turned from Mumbo to Pearl immediately, catching the head with one hand but gave Pearl just enough time to sprint in and slice her with the hot blade. It was hot enough to stab all the way through her body and cut her torso in half. Her body fell apart and melted into the ground. Pearl stared at the ground with heavy breathing. The world spun around her, she felt like she was going to pass out or vomit.
"Pearl!" She heard Mumbo yell in terror; she flicked her head at him, that's when she realized Moon was right in front of her. Their hand was holding something to blurry and deep in her stomach to recognize. Oh. Pearl realized she was being stabbed. She didn't feel anything until the pain registered, but it only felt like she was being punched. Moon tried to pull the blade out but she grabbed his arm, holding it in place and looking at them with a threatening stare.
"Let go you psycho!" They yelled, Pearl said nothing. Mumbo pried them off her, but the sword stayed intact. The longer it was in the more it began to sting and sore.
"Are you ok?!" He yelled anxiously, she nodded, although being unsure,
"I just have to leave it in, right? A-and apply pressure?" She started to freak out a little.
"I think so! Lay down too, I think that helps!"
"I-I can't! We're in the middle of a fight!"
Moon struggled in Mumbos arms. They trashed and kicked but Mumbo never had been more determined to hold onto something in his life.
"You're not getting to her." He said into their ear, and threw them onto the ground, putting the end of his sword centimeters away from their throat. They laughed.
Grian was sitting in the tall grass of Mumbos mindscape very silently crying. He knew Pearl had gotten hurt but didn't know if she was dead. He absolutely couldn't stand being here anymore. He couldn't do anything. He had been listening closely the whole time and barely spoke; he didn't want to distract Mumbo or miss anything.
And the fact that it was all his fault killed him.
Impulse was dead. Scar was dead. Pearl might be dead, and it was all because he decided to get a little to curious with the voices inside his head.
"Mumbo."
Yeah?
"I don't care what it takes, we are killing Moon."
Grian! That's too risky!
"I just said 'Idon't care!' Do you understand what they've done?! I guess it only finally hit me now what really happened.." He took a deep breath, "And you don't understand what I've done either! I'm just as bad as a person they are!"
Grian that's not true, don't compare yourself to them!
Grian really didn't have any words to say and he could only just sob at this point.
I'm carrying out this plan. I'll do anything that may save you because I can not lose you too.
"Mumbo!"
Pearl!
Grian could tell that by the tone of his voice he was requesting the lighter.
"Mumbo you don't have the candle!"
Well that's the next step.
Mumbo loomed over Moon. Although theu seemed high on energy before the wax variant fight, they didn't seem to have an ounce of energy left.
Mumbo looked at their hand and spotted the fused candle and reached for it, but Moon interrupted with a headbutt. Mumbo groaned and Moon squirmed away.
"Mumbo stop."
"No!"
Mumbo face was planted into the ground by Moons foot. Then, they grabbed his head by his hair and lifted him up.
"I'm done here. You two have caused more trouble then you should have," They chucked him back onto the ground and walked away.
Mumbo tilted his head to see what they were doing.
They were leaned down and picked up the sachal. Mumbos eyes widened, he probably dropped it during the fight.
They grabbed two candles out, they were perfectly intact.
Pearl and Mumbos.
He wasn't to worried at first, Moon didn't have the lighter. He clasped it in his hands, but it wasn't there. Moon has somehow stolen it.
"God dang it!" Mumbo huffed as he punched the ground in frustration.
Moon flicked the flame and held it over one of them, and it caught fire. Pearl immediately tensed. The candles were like Voodoo dolls.
Mumbo gathered every last bit of strength he had to stand up and charge at them.
He tackled them to the ground, rolling a few times. He bashed Moons face in as hard as he could, swinging and beating as they yelled in pain under him.
Mumbo grabbed Pearls candle and blew it out, as they seemed to be fine when not lit. He watched Pearl, and she seemed better. He tossed the candle far away and snatched the fused one.
Something seemed different about it.
When they first got the candle it had 2 wicks.
Now there was only one.
"Burn it, you won't." Moon coughed.
"Mumbo."
"Yeah?" He whispered.
"I'm fine."
Mumbo inhaled and flicked the flame on and lit it on fire. The candle burned faster then normal, and their skin at first looked like it was sweating, but it dripped thicker and tugged at their skin. Mumbo backed up, a little disgusted. Moom was very much melting.
At first Grian felt fine, but then his head was spinning and hr could feel the burning sensation from when the sun was still out. The mindscape started to warp with what seemed to be real life.
The bright sky being replaced by the darkness. The tall grass being replaced with short damp grass. Grian already missed the sun but there was still light, the figure above him. His best friend, MumboJumbo.
Mumbos eyes widened; he knew Grian was back. He scrambled for the candle but Grian heard Moons distant laugh. He snatched the candle from Mumbo and ran away from his friends.
"Grian." Mumbo said with frustration in his voice.
"No, they're still there. I can hear them!" Grian held the candle close to his chest; somehow, the flame wouldn't light his clothes on fire.
"Grian, please," His friend grew desperate, "The plan is over, we won! You're back and safe and they're gone! Un-light the candle!" Tears rolled down his cheeks. Grian was distracted by those tears. They were real, liquid tears. He wondered how many tear shaped rocks he had thrown into the ocean during Exile.
Grian sighed, snapping himself back in the moment. "I cant. They swapped consciousnessess with me so I have to feel the pain!" Everyones eyes quivered with sadness. They couldnt stand losing eachother. Mumbo walked towards Grian slowly. He paced back a few steps, afraid if Mumbo was trying to stop him. Mumbo took the brunette by the shoulders and hugged him. Tighter then he ever had before. Grian worried just for a second if Mumbo would kill him of suffocation before his body finsihed melting. The moon rocks slipped out of his eyes while his fingeres melted into the brits shirt. Grian eyed Pearl and stepped away. She wasnt dead. He tried so hard to run but his legs were sinking into the grass. Mumbo grabbed him again and carried him to her.
Grian stared at her. She was covered in bruises, cuts, and dirt with a sword planted in her stomach. None of them had first aid and her clothes were stained with blood.
"I'm so sorry," Grian covered his mouth. Pearl weakly smiled at him, but didnt bother to move much more.
The three cried together for the next few minutes.
None of them questioned Grians tear shaped rocks. None of them said a word.
Grian continued to liquefy into the ground until he couldnt hold himself up enough to look at his friends and could only stare at the sky and moon.
Moons big.
Grian won't forget that night. The night where he and Mumbo were running around Boatem, until Mumbo pointed out that the moon was big.
He shouldnt have done anything about it. He shouldnt have bat an eye.
Now here he was.
Dying because of it.
And Grian smiled.
He felt Moon melt with him. They had won, and everything turned out to be ok.

L I bet you thought you were getting a happy ending by that title
Thank you everyone so much for journey this fic has brought on. I'm so happy that I've entertained or really impacted some peoples lives with some dumb idea I thought of while watching an episode of a dumb Minecraft server /pos
I made great friends and discovered great things.
I'm sure 10 year old me would be happy with what I've accomplished today because it never really worked out for them :]
Also I think this is the first big project I've ever finished and I'm not sure how to feel.
If you have any unanswered questions about this fic or about me, leave them in the comments and I'll happily answer.
And here's an answer nobody probably thought to question; The reason why Pearl and Mumbo won is obviously because it reflects off the candle story, but if the story was told by Voice why didn't it change it so that moon would win?
Voice was actually double crossing Moon the whole time gasp
So without Voice, Mumbo and Pearl would have never won and that's why it's my favorite character
