Chapter 9
Raphael: "I'm sorry I rushed you into this. But you are way too young to die. How old are you? 18?"
Freja: "19."
Raphael: "See. That's too young. You should enjoy your life. Going to parties, getting drunk, learn for school."
I just laughed. Oh, if he would know. I was forced to grow up at a young age.
Raphael: "Sit down. I'll be right back. I'll just tell my vampires you are here."
I nodded and took place on the big sofa. Raphael was gone. I was in a big room. No windows, the walls built out of cement. The furniture was made out of gold metal and red velvet. Why did Raphael do that? He could have died. And why did I go with him? Why did I trust him? I am not allowed to trust anyone. I buried my face in my hands. I felt that tears were filling my eyes.
Raphael: "Are you alright?" He was back.
Freja: "Yeah, it has just been a tough day."
I wiped my tears away without Raphael noticing. He sat down next to me.
Raphael: "It has probably been a tough life in your case. Can I help you with something? Do you need anything? Are you tired?"
I shook my head.
Raphael: "Please tell me something about you. I'm curious."
Freja: "Why?"
Raphael: "I see, you were taught to not trust anyone. Una decisión sabia. Let me begin. My name is Raphael Santiago and I was born in 1937 in Mexico. My parents and brothers are dead but my little sister Rosa is still alive. She lives in an elderly home and I visit her from time to time. She's the last family member alive. I am the leader of the vampireclan here in New York. Now your turn."
Mexico... that explains all the spanish sentences. The language suited him. I did not understand a single word and felt dumb because of that but overall, he is not able to talk in my native language either, isn't he?
Now I more or less was obligated to answer. Was it wise to trust a vampire? Well, wise to trust anyone in general?
Freja: "Well, you already know my name and my age. I was born in a small town in Norway. When my parents died I lived at my oncles cabin in the forests. He's still alive but I don't want to return. I came to New York in order to start a new life. Well, it didn't work out the way I expected."
We both laughed.
Raphael: "Yeah I get it. Weird situation for all of us. How was the life in the forests? How was your uncle?"
Freja: "Oh, nothing special." I did not want to talk about my uncle. Definitely not.
We have been talking for hours. I felt so comfortable around him. It's like the time stood still. I was happy that I made the decision to go with him. He explained me everything. All facts about the shadowhunters, the vampires, werewolves, warlocks and faeries.
Raphael: "The sun is already rising. We should probably go to bed. I'm afraid that I can't offer you an own room."
Freja: "No, no worries. I can sleep on the roof if it's okay."
Raphael: "No, it's not okay. You can sleep in my bed. It's big. I can protect you better there. Also it's too cold outside. The shadowhunters already told me that you were really sick. Necesitas mejorar otra vez."
Freja: "It's alright. Don't worry. I don't want to take your bed."
Raphael grabbed my hand and took me with him into his room. It was huge, filled with a kingsized bed, or even bigger.
Raphael: "Look, it's big. You on one side, me on the other side. I'll get an extra blanket."
He went away and came back with a blanket and my backpack. He gave me the bag.
Raphael: "The bathroom is over there."
I went inside. Even the bathroom was huge. I changed my clothes. Jace put some of his shirts in it and another jeans from Izzy. I took another antibiotic from the blister and swallowed it with a little bit of tap water. Two more days and I would be fine again. Then the pain will be completely gone. Hopefully. I returned to the bedroom. Raphael was already in the bed, wearing sweatpants and a tight black shirt. I could see all his muscles through it. I stepped in front of him.
Freja: "Listen, I can sleep on the sofa or the floor too. I don't want to take your space. I don't have a problem with..."
He grabbed me by the hand and pulled me into the bed and laughed. I fell onto him but immediately jumped off and brought some distance between us.
Raphael: "Freja, it's okay. The floor? Seriously?"
Freja: "I slept on a floor made of cold concrete several days. I'm fine with the floor now." I smiled.
Raphael: "Yeah, that's probably one of the biggest reasons why your kidneys are screwed now. Great job. Why did you do that?"
Freja: "I had nowhere to stay. And I kinda liked it there."
Raphael: "If you like abandoned places I should definitely show you some corners of the hotel tomorrow."
I still smiled. I was laying on my left side, Raphael on his right side so we could see each other. We talked some more. My eyes began to get heavy. I listened to him telling me more about vampires. His voice was so comforting. Sleep overcame me more and more. I could feel a blanket being layed over me and soon was fully asleep.
Raphael POV:
Freja was asleep. She sure looked like an angel. But darkness surrounded her. It was a part of her. She breathed deep and slowly. She seemed to be comfortable. I was happy she was there. I really wanted her to go with me from the beginning but it was her choice. I would respect every choice of her. I never felt that way before, never really cared about anyone except my family and myself.
I knew that she was totally asleep so I reduced the distance between us. She smelled like pines, earth and fresh flowers. It smelled so good. There were just some inches between us now. While looking at her I slowly fell asleep too.
