Chapter 1
It was right before midnight. I was walking the streets right in front of Central Park in New York City. It still seemed like a dream to me. Two days earlier I was on my way to the airport, escaping from my past. All I had left was a bag with some clothes and some more money. I put it in a locker in Penn Station shortly after my arrival. I was afraid someone might steal it from me while discovering the night-life of New York. I didn't book a hotel. Small naps in the parks were sufficient for now.
I was invisible for the crowd, no one seemed to see me. I am nobody, just one of a thousand people. I stopped walking and looked into the sky. The moon was shining bright and full, some stars held his company. While looking up, a man ran against me. He didn't even peek up from his smartphone, he just squeezed right past me. As I said, no one sees me. They are all busy with something else.
It's the first time I was in such a big city. The lights, traffic and so many people... it was overwhelming. But I kind of liked it. Once again I gazed up into the sky and smiled. Then I continued to walk the unknown streets.
I didn't think of a specific direction or destination. I just let my feet carry me away. Two hours later I was standing in a small alley. It was dark. A big cloud covered the moon and stars, the street lights not reaching the street. I decided to go back. I don't really like darkness. I appreciate the light way more.
I turned around, ready to go, until I heard a noise I couldn't identify. I stopped and listened carefully. What was that? I waited. The moment I wanted to continue going I heard it again. It sounded like a clink. A clink of something metal on maybe stone or cement.
I don't know what the hell I was thinking but I decided to follow the sounds. I tried to walk as fast but quiet as possible. The sounds became louder. I listened again.
I began to hear moans. Male moans. The man needed to be exhausted. I also began to hear heavy breathing and some shouts.
"Yeah, come on. Oh, are you scared? You need some rest? Don't worry about it. I will give you some rest. What about resting forever?". I got goosebumps all over my body. Is someone murdering someone else?
I began to run to the scene. Why ever I did that. I can't tell. But maybe I just wanted to help. Adrenaline was rushing through my veins. I could feel it in my heart and my blood.
I ran faster and faster until I hit the dark alley where the people were fighting. In the last moment I saw a man who rose his glowing sword and dug it into something I couldn't identify. The 'it' was gone. From one moment into another. Gone. Into air. Into nothing. I stared at the man, and he stared right back to me.
