96: Understanding Our Past
*A little unedited*
Hate You - Jungkook
"Don't you sometimes think that life got better since we've moved here?"
"No, not at all?"
"Really? Especially by being away from home and all, from our dysfunctional home?"
"My home was good, it's my attitude outside of home that was the problem."
Taehyung hums back to the response, staring at the fake stars sprawled onto the ceiling by the projector, "I can't relate, my home was shit."
"I know it was," Minho sighs back, closing his eyes, "Seems like a lot of roomies here has some sort of daddy issues."
Snapping his head towards Minho, Taehyung frowns, "Not everyone -"
"Jeongguk's father abandoned him when he was a baby, so he didn't have a father. Taemin's father is abusive, and your father was also a shit show," Minho listed off calmly, raising a finger with each statement, "My father was strict with me, sure, but he loved me. Jimin's family is very loving, and Woosung's parents are ignorant to the abuse that would go on in their own home."
Well..... Okay, he has a point.
Who knows, perhaps that's why they all struggle sometimes with certain issues.
Jimin was always surrounded by love in his family, so he always loves receiving attention and praises when he does well, but was always held back as a kid to expressing the true colors of his personality.
Woosung's parents weren't always on his cases, so he would always mind his business like how his parents were with him - so giving or recieving attention doesn't affect him.
Jeongguk had to be the man that would protect his mother as he got older, now being here he's being more exposed to his sensitivity side - which he wouldn't express so often back home.
Taemin was always supressed from expressing him, and now he expresses himself openly, but he's still haunted with protecting himself and his feelings - so no matter how outgoing he may be, he's only a boy with many layers to count.
Minho is the eldest in the family, safety and protection was what he grew up by. His problem is not being able to stop worrying and start letting things be as it is.
Lastly Taehyung, someone who was only raised by his father without a mother in the picture, only exposed to such aggression at a young age that he doesn't even know what feelings or sensitivity are.
Vastly different backgrounds, and yet they understand each other too well.
Far too well.
Taehyung huffs, closing his eyes, "Must be nice to have a family that love each other, you should be grateful."
Minho twitches a frown to this, fluttering his eyes open, "I know.... And I am," He whispers, feeling a knot gripping his throat, "But.... No matter how well they raised me, I just fuck up all the time. After that..... Accident."
Now Taehyung shifts his attention, looking at Minho with a frown, "What accident?"
The longer the silence passed between them, the heavier Minho's frown dropped, all the way until he had to close his eyes again to regather his composure, "This was after Z and I broke up, I fell in love with two other people," He whispers, lowly but just loud enough so Taehyung can hear him, "The thing is we were never in a relationship, we were just friends. The boy was so handsome and charismatic, and the girl was gorgeous and tender. They balanced me out, my feelings that is. We've known each other for years, and they just.... They were my persons, you know?"
Taehyung can see how difficult it was for Minho to talk about this, so he edges closer to him, just so he can feel that someone's there. Minho was too far in his head to notice, and he wipes his eyes by how dry it was getting, "It's like we knew that we were for each other, but we never spoke about it. But..... One day, we got into a car accident and.... I lost them."
A slow tear found its way to escape Minho's eyes, and Taehyung lets it flow - to let Minho let it out.
He never talks about himself like this, and Taehyung isn't about to ruin the moment either.
Minho exhales heavily, sniffling a little, "I think after that day, I spiraled. I couldn't stop drinking, shit - it even made my dad become sober and throw away all the liquior at our home just so I would stop drinking. It didn't stop - I couldn't stop. The pain was too much," And Minho wipes his tears with his wrists, "It was a problem, I couldn't even deny it. So my parents last bet was to send me off here, where I'd be away from.... Everything for a while. It worked, but.... I miss home sometimes too. And I always thinkg that, if it weren't for my stupid mistakes, I would be home and not here."
Taehyung's frown deepens. Sure, maybe their situation is different, but Taehyung can feel that longing of missing home. Taking his father out of the equation, he was happy. He had good friends, a good girlfriend back then too, and people were so rude to him as they are here due to him not being fluent in Korean.
It's been difficult to adapt here, but these roomies are making it easier for him to not feel alone.
In some way, it's refreshing to know that he isn't the only one going through these thoughts.
So, Taehyung placed a hand on Minho's arm, rubbing his thumb on his shirt, "We change change the choices we've made in life, but we can start to change who we would like to become moving forward," Minho shifts his gaze to him, "Besides, you're not alone. We can find ways to make this place feel a little like home."
That seemed to have worked in making Minho feel better because he twitched a smile, placing his large hang over Taehyung's, "I appreciate that," And his smile slightly falters, "I'm sorry about the situation you're going through with your siblings. I can't relate because I get along well with my siblings, but when we do have fights, it is tough to bear."
Taehyung blinks slowly to such response, moving his gaze back to the ceiling with this numbness overflowing his feelings, recalling the faint memories of his siblings, "It wasn't always like that, you know?" He whispers, his eyes gazing over the fake shooting star from the projector, "We were so united against our father. We knew he was the bad guy in our story, and we would do everything to protect each other."
Taehyung can hear the giggles and laughter in his head of his younger self with Karma and Eden, the memory of them chasing each other around their home while their father was away to work.
When he would be gone, that was the best time for them.
They did everything.
Built forts with pillows.
Imagine a battleground in their living room while they shoot at each other with their fingers.
Watch endless movies and would go to sleep in each other's arms.
They were smart to clean up everything perfectly before their father got home, but those few hours of being alone was a paradise for them.
"Occasionally we would have fights, you know, as brothers would. The issue was, we wouldn't stop until someone started bleeding. That's how we knew who won," Taehyung whispers, remembering vividly the time he burnt Karma's hand with the stove because be pissed him off, "But after all of that, we were still brothers and protected each other. Well..... Until I fucked it up."
Minho turns to his side, frowning, "Tae, you were young and scared-"
"Dad tried to stab me with a knife when I stood in front of Eden's beaten up body to make him stop hurting him. I was prepared to take the stab but," Taehyung's eyes are flooded with tears, eyes closed, "Karma stood in the way, and he stopped him. He did was both Eden was terrified to ever do, and it was to stand up against that monster. He was the hero to our story, and because I was so scared of our father, I caged him in a jail cell instead of the real villain."
Taehyung rubs his eyes, hiccuping in his breaths, "And I made Karma into a villain instead. I deserve what's coming for me though. I really do because I fucked him up for him saving my life."
Now Taehyung sits up, hands on his face, remember the look of betrayal on Karma's face as he was classified as insane and got locked behind bars because of how Taehyung was a coward.
It's a day Taehyung is haunted with everyday. Even if he came clean after, the damage was already done.
And there's nothing he can do about it.
Minho watches as Taehyung crumbles before his eyes, sitting up slowly and slowly places a hand on Taehyung's shoulder, "Tae, it's not your fault. You tried to make things right, and sure, it was too late but if it wasn't for you speaking up, he would've been there to this day. You saved his life too. It's takes so much courage to speak out and I'm so proud of you."
Taehyung is quivering, resting his chin on his knees with arms wrapped around his legs, "Karma is a man filled with grudge and rage. He will never listen to me. He will never forgive me - and rightfully so, but I just..... I wish he could just give me a chance to explain."
Minho heart quenches to Taehyung's words, wrapping an arm around his shoulders and laying his hand on his arm, "You're brothers, he would always give you a chance."
"This time he won't," Taehyung sighs shakily, "Hates me."
"Perhaps he does," Minho admits lowly, lifting his head up to face Taehyung, "But if there's one thing I know for sure is that someone wouldn't just fly across the globe for someone else. Maybe he's angry, damn right pissed at you, but there's a very thin line between love and hate. Perhaps he wants to hate you because he loves you, and he's finding all these reasons to hate you - but in reality, perhaps he just wants you to stop running away and face him for once."
Taehyung wipes the tears from his cheeks, sniffling, "Well, he's not making it quite easy to face him."
Minho rubs his head, "Perhaps you need to be a little brave before facing him. But remember, you know him. You know him better than anyone, and that shouldn't scare you."
A deafening silence flooded the room, the two sinking in their own personal battles they're dealing with alone.
What a blessing that they have each other in these moments, where they feel too much with the feeling as though there's no one to turn to.
They got each other.
That's more than enough.
The front door suddenly sounds open, the two immediately going to gather their composures to not show the emotional moment they just had.
Minho wipes Taehyung's tears away, right before being a little bold and pressing a reassuring peck to his lips - just because he could.
It cracked a small smile to Taehyung's lips, just as the roomies entered the living room.
Minho leans back on her hands as he sits, noticing how early it is actually, "You're back early. Was the party not fun without me?"
This twitched a grimace on Jeongguk's lips, just as Taemin moves forward, "You could say that."
Minho eyed Taemin, just as the boy gets down to the floor and completely collapse onto Minho's body with arms around his neck.
Everyone watches as Taemin, for once, complete breaks down in Minho's arms. Minho sits up and holds onto him, eyebrows furrowed to the rest of the roommates as to what the fuck happened out there.
Ariana didn't waste a second, "Your brother is becoming a problem Tae," Her eyes pierced as Taehyung's face falls, "Either you handle it, or I will."
And just like that, all of Taehyung restraint crumbled, his hand clutching tightly to a brutal fist.
Minho is looking to Taehyung's hand, knowing exactly what could be running through his head, "Tae..."
Taehyung lost his patience.
