Chapter 29: Alone & Afraid

Karai shuts off the phone in her hand, glancing at the blank screen before turning around to where Destiny is slumped against a nearby wall, her arms lifted into the air and secured with weighted chains. Her ankles are also chained to the wall.

"Destiny, wake up," Karai orders, walking closer and nudging the girl with her foot. "Wake up."

Destiny opens her eyes, her entire body trembling as strained breaths leave her chapped lips. She's wearing only a tank top on her top half, exposing her arms to the nipping air of the cell, and the sweatpants that she borrowed from April are absent.

Karai raises her hand, instantly causing Destiny to flinch. Karai halts, waiting as the exhausted mutant slowly raises her head as if her hair is too heavy to support. Every movement is slow and rough, from the lifting of her head to the twitching of her fingers.

Her wild green eyes meet Karai's brown ones, but they're hazy and unfocused.

"Why are you doing this?" she croaks.

Karai's face shows no emotion. "You're a piece in his plan, and that's all you need to know."

A low growl escapes Destiny and she gives a weak tug against the chains securing her to the wall. She attempts to change into her giant wolf, but she hardly manages to sprout a patch of black fur before she slumps into exhaustion again. Karai watches the pitiful sight for another second before she snaps her fingers. Two Foot bots appear at the cell entrance with a bucket full of water held between them.

They dump the water over Destiny, instantly jerking her awake as she chokes and struggles to catch her breath. She blinks rapidly as water invades her eyelids and lashes, her entire body tensing up as her eyes go wide. She knows what's coming.

Karai leans down, staring her in the face. "Shredder could let you go if you just help him out," she says, making her voice soft and almost kind. "You could tell us where Splinter is."

Destiny doesn't say a word. Karai sighs and snaps her fingers together again, causing an instant jolt of electricity to rocket through Destiny's entire body. She screams, feeling as though her bones are rattling and her brain is frying.

It stops and she falls limp as her energy is leeched away. Her chest still lifts with her breaths, but they're fewer and shallower. She lets out a soft sob, her sopping curls clinging to her clammy face as she trembles. The scent of burnt fur fills the cell as she closes her eyes, wishing she would be allowed to sleep.

"You're making this harder than it has to be," Karai says.

Destiny's fanged teeth remain gritted. "I'll n-never join you," she chokes, throat raw.

Karai scowls. She produces a small knife from her belt, handing it off to the nearest Foot bot. She gestures towards Destiny, sending the bot on its way. Destiny thrashes and tries to back away, but finds only cold stone behind and all around her. The bot presses the blade to a soft spot on her wrist, waiting for the order.

Karai meets her gaze, clicking her tongue in a scolding manner. She turns away, folding her hands behind her back.

"Wrong answer."

"Right here!"

Diaval looks up from his rooftop seat, watching as a vehicle the size of a subway car comes screeching to a halt outside an alleyway. The Foot Clan archer stands, making sure to stay far from the edge as he grips his bow tighter. The doors of the vehicle open with a small dinging sound.

Diaval crouches lower as Donatello leaps from the vehicle, phone held out at arm-length. Michelangelo comes bouncing out after, followed by Leonardo, with Raphael and Casey bringing up the rear.

"Anyone around?" Leonardo asks, casting his gaze upwards to the rooftops. Diaval hides himself further.

"April? April, it's us," Donatello calls, keeping his volume down. "Please be alright..."

"Yo Red! Come on out!" Casey tries.

He promptly earns a death glare courtesy of Donatello. "Idiot, her pursuers could be anywhere!" the turtle hisses.

"Calm down, bro, she probably can't hear you when you whisper like that," Casey retorts.

Donatello rolls his eyes, giving Leonardo a pointed look. "We had to stop and pick him up, huh?"

"We were on our way past his place anyways," Leonardo retorts. "Now if someone could find April and make it quick, that'd be great."

Michelangelo gasps and bounces in place once before he races over to two nearby dumpsters, one that has the lid closed and the other overflowing with black trashbags. He shoves the lid of the closed one open to find April crouched inside, shielding her eyes from the light. The orange-masked turtle flashes a grin at her, then out at the others.

"Found her," he says. "I win!"

"Guys, thank goodness you're here," April says, grasping Michelangelo's hand and allowing him to help her from the empty bin. She wobbles slightly, resting her hand on her head. "I feel like someone's hitting my head with a sledgehammer."

"Maybe you should sit this one out, dudette, you look tired," Michelangelo says, steadying her as she blinks and wobbles again.

"So...where's this chaser guy?" Casey wonders.

There's a short yelp from above, followed by a loud crash as a blurred figure lands in the second dumpster, spilling some trash over the edge. The teens stare as the person, now wrapped up in his cloak, struggles to get out of the mound of garbage.

Finally, he flips his cloak off his face, shaking his pale hair free. He scowls at the turtles and their human companions, clambering from the dumpster and regaining his footing on the concrete. He nocks an arrow in his bow with the grace he lacks in his normal day-to-day routine, aiming it at Leonardo.

"Dude, aren't you supposed to be a ninja?" Michelangelo asks, scratching the top of his head.

Diaval ignores the comment. "Can't let'cha go," he says. "Can't mess it up."

"The only thing we're gonna be messing up right now is your face," Raphael retorts, smashing his fist into his palm.

"Prepare to face the judgement of Casey Jones," Casey agrees, flipping his goalie mask down.

Before either of the hotheads can make a move, however, Leonardo whips past them with swords drawn and eyes white. Diaval's eyes widen slightly and he lurches backwards, narrowly avoiding the blades that go swinging past his head. Leonardo spins and retaliates, making Diaval throw his bow up to block the attack. The twin katanas dig into the wooden finish but don't slice through.

Diaval shoves the turtle back with astounding strength, sending Leonardo into the brick wall behind him. The turtle grits his teeth and goes to stand up, but an arrow whizzes past his head and pins the turtle's mask tails to the wall.

"Stop," Diaval utters, lowering his weapon. "Don't—"

Diaval falls silent as a bō staff makes contact with his cranium. He blinks once, frowns, and promptly drops like a sack of potatoes. Donatello spins the staff and sheathes it back on his shell, staring at the fallen soldier for a moment before returning his attention to Leonardo.

"What was that, Leo?" he asks.

Leonardo frowns as he rips the arrow from the wall, freeing his mask. "Nothing. Just engaging in combat," he says, chucking the arrow aside.

"More like going nuts," Raphael retorts, stomping over and smacking the blue-clad turtle over the head. "Why would you just attack him? It was a stand-off!"

"You were about to attack him!" Leonardo retorts.

"But I'm the impulsive guy on this team, not you," comes the easy response. Raphael stares at his brother as Leonardo gets to his feet, rubbing the new tear in his mask. "Leo, we need our leader right now, and I know you're worried about Des but now is not the time to get angry. Got it?"

He lowers his head, taking a long breath before nodding. "Yeah, I've got it," he says, straightening back up. "Donnie, can you still track Des?"

"Yeah, her phone is still sending out a signal," Donatello replies.

"Good. Pinpoint exactly where she is and figure out an infiltration plan."

Casey flashes a gap-filled grin, bounding over to the ShellRaiser and pumping his fist in the air. "Let's go save wolfie!" he proclaims. "Casey Jones has been needing some action!"

"Casey...I know it's stupid to ask, but can you not right now?" April asks, still holding her head. "With the yelling?"

"Sure thing, Red. Anything for my special lady," Casey responds easily, throwing a wink her way. In the foreground, Donatello suffers a momentary lapse of sanity as he imagines Casey's head exploding.

Michelangelo pats April's shoulder, flashing her a smile. "I'm sure you'll feel better after a long nap, cartoons, and some pepperoni and jellybean pizza."

"Yeah, okay Mikey," she says with a weak laugh.

"Come on, everyone," Leonardo says, snapping his fingers and pointing to the vehicle. "Let's make this fast."

The turtles and their human allies pile into the ShellRaiser and drive off. Once the engine fades, Diaval opens his eyes and sits up. Unfazed, he gets to his feet and brushes off his cloak. His head hurts slightly, nothing that he can't deal with.

"Gotta warn the others," he mumbles to himself, retrieving his bow and fallen arrow before taking off down a separate route. "Can't have turtles ruining plans."
