Moonlight Monsters
My hearing picked it up as I was striding down the halls.
The squeak of my trainers halted outside the door of the Literature classroom.
"Werewolves?" One of the kids had said.
"Yes, Mr Callum, Werewolves. They are a perfect example of literary cliché. There's that popular show following its own version of werewolves, there are werewolves in movies, fantasy books; even in Gotham's history."
With no one in this vast hallway of Gotham Academy, and my current period being free of students, I lean against the wall beside the door to listen.
"Our history?" A girl repeats.
"Yes indeed. Long before the Waynes, there were wolves. In Gotham wolves were silver, fur and eyes. They only transformed when starlight presented itself. Moonlight is for other wolves. They polluted the other cities; white, black, brown, grey. But starlight wolves were specific to Gotham."
Someone scoffs, "Gotham isn't a place for magical wolves anymore."
"Yeah, just bats."
"That story can't be true professor!"
I smirk, knowing Professor Gimly believes deeply in the wolves of Old Gotham.
"There are people out there who project fire from their arms, who lift cities one-handed; is it so hard to believe that werewolves once roamed here?"
Students start mumbling amongst one another. I almost pity Gimly.
As I continue to walk through the academy towards the field, I pat down my fringe curtaining my forehead.
It hides the silver star on my skin pretty well.
