Chapter 5
Lia's eyes opened up to reveal that she was in a hospital room. She was quite disappointed that Kazuki still didn't heal her cancer. She sat up in her bed and found that her body hurt way more than it usually did. She could see that she was nearing the end of her days here, as her body failed to respond to her mind.
Everything hurts. I wasn't able to give him my answer that night, but how did I get here?
Memories flashed through her from the night's events.
I wanted to tell him I would go with him, but here I am almost dead. Does that mean I'm going to die after all?
Her arms very weakly and slowly hugged herself as she let a tear drop.
Please save me.
She looked over to the left side of the bed to see that her husband was there by her side. He was on the floor with his head rested on the bed.
"You're here," she spoke softly to him and stroked his hair. "I'm happy to see you here. How much will I see you until I leave you behind? I'm going to miss you."
Monte opened his eyes and lifted up his head to face her.
"Lia!" He got up real fast and hugged her real tight. "You're alright."
She smiled. "For now," she said softly.
Monte broke the hug. "What do you mean for now?"
"My days are numbered here."
What is she talking about? I've read her note. Does she mean death is going to take her or is she talking about this person who can supposedly heal her even in this state? She can't possibly believe something that crazy.
"Lia," he began but was cut off when her sister came bursting in through the door.
"Lia," she shouted. "Are you okay? It can't be time yet!"
"Damn it," he thought. "That Silvia always comes in at the wrong time."
Monte backed away and sat in the chair to give the two sisters time together during her last moments.
"I still have a few days left," Lia responded.
Silvia's eyes filled with tears. "Come on Lia. That's not funny. You tell me something like 'I'm going to be okay. You don't have to worry. I'm going to come through it', but you're not going to say that are you?" She started to cry as the words kept coming out of her month. "We've always been together, haven't we? I was your maid of honor at your wedding. I stood up for you while mom and dad chewed you out for getting married at twenty instead of going to University! We were always together! How can you tell me that you're not even going to try to live?"
Lia's eyes filled with tears. "Silvia!" She threw the covers off of her and attempted to run over to her sister but, the moment she placed her feet on the floor and tried to take her first step. Her legs would not respond, she immediately fell over. She was far too weak to even walk anymore. The tears spilled out of her eyes as she realized just how serious her condition was. "No," she screamed.
Silvia gasped and ran over to her sister. "Lia!" She threw her arms around her and started crying.
"I'm sorry Silvia but please. My body hurts too much right now."
Silvia backed away with both her hands covering her mouth. "It can't be."
Monte went over to Lia, picked her back up and place her back on the bed as she was far too weak to get up herself. He placed a kiss on her forehead. "I'll give you two some time together." Monte left the room.
The sisters were both silent. Neither of them knew what to say to one another until finally, Silvia went and laid on the bed beside her sister.
"Lia. I'm sorry." Lia said nothing. "Sometimes I do let my emotions get the best of me. I know this is not your fault. I really am sorry."
Lia was about to say something which looked like she was going to apologize to her sister. "You don't have to say anything. My heart is just going into despair. I just can't imagine my life without you. You've always been there. I'm really going to miss you.
Silvia's phone buzzed. It was a text from her mom saying that she wanted her home.
"Mom wants me home. I'll be back to visit you tomorrow, but before I go." She reached into her bag and got out a book. "I know how much you like Bleach, so I got the new manga for you. I think it's called the 'thousand year blood war arc.' You'll get bored without anything to do. I hope this helps."
Lia sat up weakly but still managed to give Silvia a smile. "Silvia. Thank you."
"You're welcome."
Then Silvia left the room and Lia was left alone. She looked at the cover of her new book and admired her new manga. She opened it and began to read it and was taken into a different reality from her own.
Nightfall had come and Lia turned her head to face the door as she heard footsteps approaching and saw the figure that came to pay her a visit.
"So you've come, Kazuki?"
He didn't say anything and just keep walking towards her and sat at the edge of her bed. Lia began to smile as she finally had a second chance to tell him her answer.
"Kazuki. My answer is yes. Ever since you gave me that option that I could live the very first time we met. My heart has told me yes in every way it could. It was my mind that went crazy about leaving everything behind to go with you, but I see now that it's what I really want. Can you take me there now?"
"And you're ready now?"
"I am."
"You're not afraid?"
"I am not afraid."
Kazuki sat in silence and thought about what he was going to say next, then finally after a few moments of silence, he began to speak again.
"Are you sure your heart is really ready to leave everything behind? You won't have any regrets if I were to take you now?"
Lia began to fear that he was starting to change his mind about saving her life. "What are you talking about?"
"If I were to show you my true form, you wouldn't be afraid?"
Lia was puzzled. She couldn't understand why he was acting like this.
"Your true form?"
"We aliens can use a human disguise to blend in with other humans when needed to. Our true form consists of green skin, completely black eyes and our ears are a little pointed. To humans, it is known as the ultimate fear."
Lia weakly sat up and pulled herself over to sit next to him. "Will you show me it?"
Kazuki was shocked. He couldn't believe that a human girl would be so interested in his kind.
"It doesn't matter how scary you think you look," Lia reassured him. "I can see that you have a really good heart and that is nothing to be afraid of. It's all the more reason for me to trust you."
Kazuki took in a deep breath. "If you insist, then I will show it to you. Are you ready now?"
"I am."
Kazuki got off the bed and walked to the center of the room. The blue light formed around him and his human appearance melted away to reveal his alien form which filled Lia's being with fear. Even she could not control the human fear that resides inside her.
"It scares you doesn't it?"
Lia took in a deep breath and calmed down her nerves. "It's not as scary as hearing you have cancer. Even with this form before me, you don't scare me. I'm not afraid of you!"
He quickly changed back into his human form and ran back over to her.
"I'm tired of waited," Lia cried. "I just want this to be over! What are you waiting for?"
Kazuki put his arms around her to calm her down.
"Lia, I need you to be patient. I promised I'd save you, but I want to spend your last few days here with your family. You have to say goodbye to them and then I will come back for you in three days time on the last day of your life. I promise I won't let you die."
Memories flashed through her from the night she found out she had cancer. The time when her husband had his arms her, screaming that he wouldn't let her die.
Lia's arms wrapped around Kazuki's waist as she started to cry into his arms, eventually crying herself to sleep. Kazuki laid her back into her bed, disappearing into the night.
