Chapter 25

Lia had finally awoken after a long inner battle and finally figuring out what her power is. But also, where her heart truly is. Looking around the room, she realized she was in a Japanese style room and had woken up on a futon rather than in her bedroom upstairs. Another thing that was strange was that Kazuki wasn't there.

She finally heard the door slide open and was happy to see that Kazuki was there.

"Kazuki," she said with a smile on her.

"You're finally awake."

Lia nodded. "Yeah. How long was I out?"

"A good two days," he chucked and then sat down beside her. "But that's alright. You can never tell how long these things are going to last."

Lia looked outside and the sunset colours of the sky shined brightly as the sun was just beginning to set.

"That a pretty long time but, I finally know what my power is! And that I'm supposed to get my own sword made..."

"There's no need for that," Kazuki cut in. "I actually have one that I would like to give to you."

"Really."

Kazuki nodded. "But first there's something I have to tell you."

"Okay sure. What is it?"

"Do you remember when Himeko told you about the Komatsuzaki clan being wiped out?"

Lia nodded slowly. "Yes.

"Well," Kazuki explained. "Himeko only knows the story through me, but only what I've told her. Did you know that I used to have a wife over 200 years ago?"

Lia's heart sank when she heard that. She felt a small bit of jealous burning deep within her but she quickly buried it as she told herself that she wasn't even brave enough to tell him how to felt. Instead, Lia just shook her head and put a smile on her face.

"I want to show you what happened that night but, I must tell you that she looked just like you."

"She looked like me?"

"Yes. There are some differences like her hair was much longer than yours but, that was common in the 1800s."

"I see," she said.

Kazuki put his hand on her shoulder. "It's nothing to worry about. I'm telling you so you're not shocked when you see her." Then he took her hand in his and gently squeezed it. "I'm going to take you into my past. Are you ready?"

Lia took in a deep breath and nodded when she was ready. Then Kazuki chanted a spell and they were out of the Komatsuzaki manor and outside what appeared to be Japanese castle grounds in the Edo period.

"This was the imperial palace when my father was still in charge of the planet," Kazuki explained. "This was back in 1817 when Himeko was born. This is the day my entire family was going to be betrayed by my father's most trusted royal guard. He is now in charge of this planet and the palace now has a western appearance."

Kazuki began walking ahead and Lia followed behind until they came to a room of a couple who looked like the young Kazuki and a Japanese princess version of Lia. She was playing the koto while he listened to her with his arm gently around her.

"This was my late wife," Kazuki explained. "Her name was Rina. I was about 24 years old here. She was 23. We were married when I was 19."

Lia nodded while she listened to his story. Then Rina's koto playing was interrupted when a messenger entered the room.

"Kazuki-Sama. You're mother has gone into labour."

"Understood," the young Kazuki replied. The messenger left and Rina got up to follow. "Are you going to be alright?"

"I'm alright," Rina replied. She put her hand on her stomach. "You can't really see my baby bump and I don't have morning sickness anymore."

They left the room and head to where Kazuki's mother was. Upon entering, Lia noticed his mother had the same purple eyes as Kazuki but her hair was the same light colour Himeko had.  Lia noticed the absence of Kazuki's father. The young Kazuki went over to his mother and took her hand to support her pain.

"Mother, why isn't father here?"

Kazuki's mother through her pained breaths forced herself to speak through the pain. "Zetsumei..." She squeezed his hand and clenched her jaw to not scream. "Has betrayed us. Your father has to deal with him."

The young Kazuki got up and manifested his sword to appear in his hands. "I'll go assist him. Rina, please stay by my mother's side."

"Understood," she said.

"Wait Kazuki," a nurse called out. "We have received orders from the Emperor that you must stay here to protect the Empress from any potential harm that may come."

The young Kazuki squeezed his sword but put it away for now and supported his mother with his wife until she finally gave birth to his sister. The baby was wrapped in a cloth and his mother was finally able to hold her.

"It's a beautiful baby girl," Rina said. "You did it. What do you plan on naming her?"

"Himeko. So no matter what happens, she'll remember she is a princess and our child."

"No need to worry about that," Rina reassured her. "There's no way some betrayal by a royal guard will matter. Your husband will be back saying how he dealt with it pretty soon."

Just as she said that, Kazuki's father came into the room. Lia noticed how much he looked like Kazuki except his eyes were the same blue colour Himeko had. He said no word and gently grabbed the newborn from Kazuki's mother's arms.

"We need to evacuate to the manor," he explained. "Zetsumei's powers are not of this world. Kazuki, Rina, you guard my wife and daughter." He passed the newborn to Rina and left.

"Let's go," Kazuki said. "Mom, are you okay to walk?" He helped her up but she was still too weak to be moving. He handed the baby to Rina and picked up his mother and they attempted to make their escape. As they were running, Rina fell over after a sword was pierced through her but she was careful to not drop the baby.

"Rina," Kazuki shouted. He went over to her but to both of their surprise, there was no trace of a sword wound. She touched the spot where she thought she was wounded.

"An illusion?"

"Must be," Kazuki replied. "We mustn't let our guard down."

Before they could continue running away. They were surrounded by Zetsumei's deep laughter.

"The Emperor is sure a fool, thinking he could escape." He revealed himself before them with his snow white hair and blood red eyes. "However, his rule ends tonight."

Kazuki placed his mother down and crossed swords with Zetsumei but, he was too strong and flung Kazuki across the floor.

"You are too weak," Zetsumei smirked. "Not that it matters. It just makes my job of eliminating the Komatsuzaki clan that much easier." He lifted his sword to take Kazuki's life but was stopped when Rina landed a deep cut on his back. He turned around amused at the fact that a woman managed to land a cut on him. "Oh? You managed to cut me. That must mean your sword's power can cut thing that are not of this world. Not that it matters. Sooner or later, you will be dead." He raised his sword to finish her off. "So by now you must have realized, I'm not of this world."

He attempted to cross swords with Rina but was stopped when Kazuki's father blocked him instead. Rina hurried over and healed Kazuki.

"Zetsumei! Leave my family alone!"

They pushed each other away but, Zetsumei used his speed skill to get over to Kazuki's mother in a flash. He grabbed her by the neck and the newborn was left alone on the floor. Rina rushed over to protect it.

"Allow me to demonstrate my sword's power."

"Let her go!"

"My sword has the power of death!" He ran his sword through Kazuki's mother's being. "It has the power to either slowly kill a person or immediately turn them to dust!" He removed his sword from her and she immediately turned to dust. Everyone screamed at what just happened.

"Kazuki! Rina! Take Himeko and get out of here!"

Kazuki's father crossed swords with Zetsumei while Kazuki and Rina were able to make their escape outside and began to fly towards the manor. When they reached the island, they landed gracefully but they both sensed that Kazuki's father had been defeated.

"The Emperor has fallen," Rina said but then started to cough. She'd fallen to her knees and Kazuki put his arm around her to comfort her. Then she weakly got back up with the newborn still in her arms. "We should go before he finds us." Rina attempted to walk but she fell over again so Kazuki carried her until they reached the manor. Then he placed a spell over it to keep it hidden. He laid out a futon and tried to heal his wife. The blue ball of healing magic appeared over her, but it shattered. He could not heal her.

"I'm sorry Kazuki." Kazuki held her hand. "I'm tired right now but, I'll be with you soon when I wake."

Rina breathed her last and her hand slipped out of his. Kazuki's eyes filled with tears and hugged his dead wife and cried over the loss of his family.

"Why was I the only one to survive," she said through his muffled voice. "Why," he shouted.

"From that moment on," Kazuki explained to Lia. "I vowed I would get my revenge. So I trained everyday to get stronger but it's still not enough to beat Zetsumei."

Then Kazuki released his spell of showing Lia his darkest memory and they were back in the present day in the Komatsuzaki manor.
