Chapter 10
Lia could feel the potion working through her veins. The moment it was injected in her arm, she could feel this thing move fast. It wasn't something that was slow, it was rushing through her like it was in a hurry to get somewhere. It reached her heart in a matter of minutes, causing it to go into cardiac arrest.
"Kaito," Kazuki shouted. "What the hell is going on?"
Lia was beginning to hear voices again. She recognised Kazuki's deep voice with a warm tone to it but she could hear the coldness in it. Her heart beat out of control and she couldn't hear any more voices. She got plunged into a nightmare where she was being pulled down to the bottom of a deep ocean and couldn't see what was dragging her down. She couldn't breathe and couldn't fight this force. She looked above to the disappearing surface as it got further away. She reached up towards it but the darkness took over and she was left to give in to the force that had been pulling her down, eventually hitting the bottom. She laid there, waiting for death to take her but then some light was shown down on her and she could feel her legs being released from the force. She pushed down on the ocean floor, floated up to the top and then breathed in a breath of fresh air once she reached the surface. She floated above the water, closed her eyes and opened them to find she was no longer there. She was met with the sound of the heart monitor and the purple eyes of Kazuki.
"Kazuki," she forced out but her voice was very weak.
Kazuki lightly touched her face. He felt her temperature was still cold but he could tell that her warmth was trying to come back and that relieved him.
"You'll be alright now."
Lia looked around her room. She knew she was in the hospital with the sound of the heart monitor but she knew that she no longer in the same hospital. The bed was still a single bed but, it had very nice covers on it. It wasn't the traditional white that you'd see in a normal hospital. They were a darker brown and the bed had a lot of pillows on it. The floor was a darker hard wood, a large couch by a huge window that revealed the big city below it. It felt like she was staying at a luxury hotel in New York city.
Lia sat up and attempted to walk around when Kazuki wasn't looking. Her legs still felt stiff like death but she has been stuck in a bed for so long that she could no longer stand it. Kazuki was gazing out the window, looking so peaceful as if a long battle has just ended for him. Lia smiled at that but then noticed her body was craving water. Her throat was so dry that it was difficult to speak. She attempted her first step but stumbled and fell to the floor. Kazuki expression turned to shock as he quickly ran over to her.
"What were you thinking," his voice had a hint of anger in it. "You don't need to push yourself. I'm here if you need anything."
"I'm sorry," Lia quickly said. "It's just that I've been stuck in a bed for so long and I simply couldn't stand being there anymore."
Kazuki's expression softened up and his voice went back to his usual warm tone. "I guess that can get annoying." He helped Lia up who seemed to have difficulty standing. "You have just woken up and I'll try to help in any way I can."
Kazuki helped her back on the bed where she just sat on the edge of it.
"I would like a glass of water if you don't mind."
Kazuki gave her soft smile.
"I can do that for you."
Kazuki went into the other room which revealed that a kitchen and living area were also part of Lia's room. He came back with a glass of water for Lia and downed it.
"I'm sorry," Lia apologized. "I don't understand why I'm so thirsty." She looked down and began to blush.
"It's expected," Kazuki reassured her. "You've just come back to life so it's expected that your body will need the important essentials to survive."
"What?" Lia looked at Kazuki confused. She wasn't sure what he meant when he just said that she came back to life.
"Water is necessary for humans to survive. Even an Alien's body will need it to survive."
"No! You said that I've just come back to life. What happened?"
Lia knew that was a stupid question to ask. She knew exactly what happened. She was suffering from Cancer and she took the deal in order to survive. That meant she had to die so nobody would question her disappearance.
Kazuki looked down unable to face her.
"I let you die. I thought that it was the best way for you to come here without causing a disturbance in your world but, it was selfish and I almost lost you. I overestimated my abilities and almost lost my life in that battle with that Shinigami."
Kazuki then faced her.
"In other words, I created a duplicate of your body for them and then had you healed. It'll be fine now. I'm sorry that I made you wait."
Lia could hardly grasp what he was saying. It didn't all make sense to her. She's only heard of Shinigami from anime and never thought of them being real.
"You fought a Shinigami?"
"Yes. Shinigami claim someone and decide their fate when they're born. There's nothing you can do about it so you have to defeat it. That's the only way that one person's fate can be changed."
Lia faced the floor with tears threatening to fall.
"I see. I was never meant to live there and have a normal life. I was born to die."
"Shinigami are never fair when it comes to deciding someone's fate," Kazuki reassured her. "When we met, it was not a coincidence nor was it fate."
Lia just nodded, still avoiding eye contact with him. Kazuki noticed that she was getting upset.
"I should get going. I'll be back to check on you in the morning."
Kazuki left the room. Lia's eyes filled with tears and she could no longer fight them. She let them fall and drowned in her sorrow, giving herself some time to cry. She missed her family that had been left behind and felt very lonely, even though she did know one person. Kazuki was still a mystery to her, she didn't really know him yet.
Nightfall came and Lia slept through the night, dreaming of the time she had spent with her family. When she woke, Kazuki had kept his promise that he'd be there in the morning with the smell of something different being cooked in the morning.
"Good morning," he greeted her as he brought her tray to the bed.
"Morning." She looked at the tray in his hand and smiled when he brought it over to her. He had just a simple little bowl with a duck spoon. "What's this?"
"Breakfast. I've prepared Miso soup for you since I think it should be time that you introduce food back into your body."
"Thank you."
Lia looked down at the Miso soup which really did not look appetizing first thing in the morning. She grabbed the spoon and took a sip of the soup not only because her body needed it but, also because Kazuki took the time to make this for her. Once she tasted it, she found that it was tasted good.
"How is it," Kazuki asked.
"It's good. Thank you."
Lia finished up her miso soup and Kazuki cleaned up her bowl. When he was done the cleaning, he came back with a night gown for her that looked like it was from the Victorian era. It was floor lengthed with lace and a small train.
"I thought you would like to change into something so you're not stuck in that hospital gown," Kazuki began. "What do you think?"
Lia admired its beauty. She's never worn anything so elegant like it and was eager to try it on.
"It's beautiful."
Kazuki placed the gown on the bed and offered Lia his hand.
"Can you stand?"
"I think so."
Lia grabbed on to his hand and pulled herself up. He then left the room to give her some privacy to change into her night gown. He came back after a few minutes to check on her to find her standing in front of the mirror admiring the gown. She loved the way it looked on her and it made her feel like she was Christine Daae from the Phantom of the Opera.
"You look beautiful," Kazuki complimented her.
Lia blushed and looked down at the floor.
"Oh! Thank you."
"I was thinking of taking you for a walk around the hospital. Being stuck in one room is not good for you when your body is trying to recover."
Lia gave him a small smile.
"That sounds like a good idea."
Kazuki offered his hand to her again.
"Shall we go?"
Lia nodded and took his hand and he helped her get used to walking again. They weren't sure what to say to each other, so they pretty much walked in silence. Lia let her eyes wander over to where her hand was resting. She liked Kazuki's warm touch and the thought of it made her slightly blush.
As they were walking around the hospital, Lia could feel her strength starting to return enough where Kazuki was able to let go of her hand so she could walk on her own. She missed the feeling of his hand in hers but then quickly scolded herself for even thinking like that.
What is wrong with me? I can't be gaining any feeling towards another man, yet alone an Alien. I'm married to Monte and could return to him at any moment.
They finished up their walk and went back to Lia's room.
"I see a lot of your strength has returned," Kazuki broke the silence.
"It has."
"You look like you should be well enough to be discharged from here. I can get that sorted out. If you need anything, the Nurses will be able to help you. I'll come by to get you out of here soon."
Kazuki turned to leave her room.
"Kazuki," Lia said to get his attention. "Thank you."
Kazuki smiled and left Lia alone again but this time, Lia was no longer afraid when he left her this time. She knew he was going to come back for her. She walked around her room looking for something to do and came across this bookshelf with writing she couldn't read. It looked like Japanese and Chinese writing so she assumed right away it was Japanese. Then as she attempted to put it back, she dropped another book with the writing of a language that was completely different from any human language. It was the Alien's mother tongue. Lia rushed over to the window to see that she was in a completely different world.
