fic prompts

Ok so I'm supposed to be studying to write the test for my learner's permit, but learning traffic rules is boring and writing fanfic is fun, so send me a relationship (doesn't have to be romantic, unless the prompt is, obviously) and a prompt number and I'll write you a little drabble. thank you for keeping me sane while i memorize traffic signs. (why are there so many of them????? please make it stop). not to push anyone in a certain direction but some of these would work so well for dark and clear.

Update: I made some flashcards, read the driving book and ate leftover Halloween candy, it was relatively fine. I'm gonna post the prompts and tag the person who requested them in this chapter, for the sake of organization. Ok here I go!

6. things you said  under the stars and in the grass ( DauntlessShadowIce1)

Brightmind and Shadowhunter. I imagine this took place when they were around three or four.

Shadowhunter's backyard is perfect for stargazing, away from the candlelit glow of the city. Well, I call it a backyard, but it's really just the massive stretch of land outside their house--technically, I don't think it's hers. You can hear the creek in the distance, and the wind rustle through the leaves of tall sycamore and poplar trees. The long grass bushes against my belly, tickling a little--wet from the rain. I can see the lights on in her house, what feels like a million miles away.

"I think that's why my parents moved here," she admits. "To get away from it all. Which is dumb, because now I have to get up way earlier than everyone else to fly to school in the morning, and my mom is like, Shadowhunter, you have to at least try to be on time, but it's like, if you had just picked a normal house we wouldn't be in this situation. Mom." She huffs, breath rising up in clouds of steam.

"I like it," I decide, grinning. "Trust me, you're lucky--we never get views of the stars like this at my place."

I shiver a little bit. She puts a wing over my shoulder, warm despite the freezing cold. Is that a thing she can do? 'Cause her grandpa was an IceWing? If it is, I'm so jealous.

Shadowhunter clears her throat. "That's the North Star. It's not actually right above you, it's

"Nerd," I mutter, shoving her.

She sticks her tongue out at me. "Shut up. I'm not gonna save you when we get lost in the middle of the ocean for that one." She shoves me back with her wing. "You can freeze to death for all I care."

I roll my eyes.

"When I was little," Shadowhunter says, laughter slowly fading to a more somber, quiet tone. "And do not laugh at me, but I used to think that if I tried hard enough, I could fly all the way up to the biggest moon."

I snort.

"I'd sneak out here and try to fly really really high, whenever I was mad at my parents and stuff--that was a phase I went through. I mean, what could be more epic than that? Who wants to run away to the Lost Continent when they could run away to the moon."

"And freeze to death. And die from asphyxiation."

"Who's the nerd now?" She punches my shoulder.

"Shut your mouth," I mutter.

16. Things you said with no space between us DauntlessShadowIce1)

Fathom and Indigo

Fathom looks so dopey and cute in the mornings. He'll take hours to wake up--I can't always tell if he's awake or not, because there's a few hours of gray area where he rolls around and mumbles things into pillows, but refuses to respond to anything you say, and never remembers it when I ask about later. Right at the edge of waking up.

I should go, the little voice in my head whispers. I wanted to get started on canning all the heaps of fruit in our kitchen today, so we'll have some all year round, and so if I'm going to have the time, I should go hunting before sunrise.

I pull my wing away a little bit, and he whimpers, like a sad little kid. I sigh.

"I need to go, you goof."

He makes a hrrmph noise, snuggling up close to me.

I giggle. "Have you seen all the things we have to do today?"

"Stay," he mumbles, not opening his eyes.

I sigh. "Five more minutes, then," I agree, snuggling up close to him.

"You're the most adorable boyfriend on the planet," I say, poking him playfully. "What is that face you're making right now?"

He blinks his eyes open. "What?" he asks, rubbing his eyes.

"I said you're adorable," I tease.

"No, the other part. We're not dating. Wait, are we?" He blinks.

I burst into uncontrollable laughter--deep belly laughs, so hard I can hardly breathe for a moment. "Fathom, we sleep in the same bed!"

"I--I--I--I thought you wanted to save space?"

"Last night, you made me a fancy dinner and lit candles and said you loved me!"

"I do!" Fathom shouts, alarmed. "I wanted you to have a nice night."

"I kiss you goodbye every time I leave to go hunting!"

"I thought you meant it, like, in a friend way," he admits sheepishly.

"Well, I really didn't," I say, bursting into a fit of giggles. "Do you wanna be my boyfriend?"

"Of course I do! I've loved you since we were five years old!"

"Okay," I say, finally catching my breath. "Then we're dating, you dummy. I'm your girlfriend, you're my boyfriend. Is that cool?"

"Um. Yeah," he says breathlessly. "That's cool."

19. Things you said when we were the happiest we ever were (DauntlessShadowIce1)

Darkstalker and Clearsight

I was originally gonna write something from their dragon-equivalent of their early 20s, but then I decided not--because I don't actually think that was the happiest time in their lives, it was more of an emotional rollercoaster. Really high highs, and really low lows. So I thought I'd do something after the war instead, when they're a little older. I hope you like it!

For a little context,  Daybreak and Foeslayer are the kids they had after the war. Foeslayer inherited her mom's prophecy power, but she can also see into the past, although at this point I doubt she's figured out how to fully do tht.

Every year, Darkstalker goes to lay flowers from our garden on his mother's grave. It's become a silent, unspoken tradition. But this year, Foeslayer (the second, not the first) said she wanted to come with us, and then Daybreak wanted to go with her, and now here we are. I can't tell if she's figured out what this is really about yet, or to her, this is just a fun family trip she refuses to be left out of.

It's a pretty day--the air cool, and the stars bright in the sky. I go to this graveyard too, sometimes--on my own, and with my husband, wandering through the rows and rows of the dead, stretching on for what feels like an eternity. Not all of them died as a result of the war--but a lot of them did. It feels important, to remember all those names, just in case no one else does.

You can see the wilted flowers from the last time we visited, scattered around her grave. But there's not just things from us--someone, one of her old army friends maybe, set down some of her old war medals, and someone else left a letter, the paper yellowed from rain.

"Whoah, Foeslayer! Some dead lady has your name!" Daybreak shouts. "That's so weird." Their eyes get wide. They glance over at Darkstalker and I, as though trying to scan our thoughts in a moment of vulnerability. (They're not going to find it--Darkstalker says our one-year-old isn't very hard to block, and with my bracelet, I don't need to worry about it anyway.)

"WHAAAAT?" Foeslayer shouts, wide-eyed. "Mommy, Daddy! That's so weird!"

"Foeslayer," I say, crouching down to get on her level. "We've told you about this, remember? You were named after your grandmother. She died during the war, trying to keep our family safe. It's not a coincidence--that's why you two have the same name."

"No fair," Foeslayer pouts. "I don't wanna share! How come Daybreak gets a new name, but mine is, like, a hand-me-down."

Shadowhunter snorts, and Darkstalker bursts into laughter. Foeslayer grins, proud of herself to have made her dad laugh, even though I don't think she intended to. "Darling," Darkstalker says, picking her up. "We named you after your grandmother because she was--she was a really good dragon. She was kind, and brave, and she loved her family a lot, and we wanted you to carry those things with you."

"Oh," Foeslayer says, thinking about this for a moment. "Can I meet her, then?"

"She's dead now, remember?" I explain, patiently. "But you might be able to look into the past with your powers, and see her. If you want." I meet her eyes.

"Oh." She furrows her brows.

"Is that why Shadowhunter was all empty and weird inside today?" Daybreak asks.

"Yeah. It was. Shadowhunter and her were really close. We all miss her a lot sometimes," I explain. "But we're okay now, sweetheart." They cling to my talon, burying their face in my chest.

And I think this is what we fought for, wasn't it? Nothing special, or particularly earth-shattering. Just a quiet afternoon. And finally, dragonets who won't remember the war's atrocities, who won't see battles every time they look at these graves, the way I do.

This is what it's supposed to feel like. Peace. A smile curls across my snout, and Daybreak pokes my cheek. I gently swat them away.

"Now you're happy," they observe, big eyes wide with curiosity.

"It's nothing, darling," I say, nuzzling my snout against theirs. "I'm just really glad you and your sister are okay."

"Why wouldn't we be?" Foeslayer asks. Darkstalker sets her down, and she crawls over to me.

"That's a story for another day." She's too young to hear these stories--I know it won't last much longer, but for now, I'd do anything to let her walk through the world unburdened with the horrors of the war. Even if only for a few more weeks. I pass her the bouquet of baby's breath and pink tea roses. "Here. You can put these down on her grave."

I can tell Foeslayer's a little confused about that, but she doesn't ask why. She sets them down on the stone.

"Hey! No fair, Mommy! I wanted the pretty flowers!" Daybreak protests.

"You can do them next year," I promise. "There's a meadow not far from here, why don't you run off and pick some?" I point in the distance, to the patch of bright flowers.

"I bet those aren't as pretty," Daybreak pouts.

"Race you!" Foeslayer crows.

"No fair! You're the better flier!"

They chase each other down the hill, tripping and falling and hopping up in the air in short, clumsy bursts of flight. I sigh, shaking my head.

"DON'T GO TOO FAR!" I shout. They don't respond--either unable to hear me, or not listening. I sigh, turning back to my husband.

"Are you okay?" I ask, brushing the tears off his cheeks.

"Yeah," he says softly, grabbing onto my talon. "I think I am."

The autumn breeze brushes against our scales.  He puts his wing over in shoulder, and we stay in peaceful silence, watching our dragonets play.

If we stayed this way for the rest of eternity, I think I'd be okay with that.
