chapter 31 update

i hate sharp eyes. i have been writing this guy for like 7000 words, and I feel like I am losing my mind. I have to get up every five minutes to pace around the house and cuddle with my cats or water my plants or something so I don't go beserk, he's so obnoxious. why did i make him a main character. you know how they say, like, you lose x amount off your life whenever you do something bad for you? that's what sharp eyes feels like. every time i write him, there's one hour of my life gone. he thinks literally everyone is as cold and horrible as him it's genuinely terrifying. sharp-eyes would see a cute puppy and feel NOTHING. he thinks kittens are "all right." he hates music and birthday cake and hugs and all things good. the only reason he hasn't killed someone yet is that it would be impractical. oh my god i hate him, he has the personality of a mouldy piece of bread

anyway bc this chapter's gonna take me two weeks, i will give you two teasers. and then i will go call my friend and make my breakfast for tomorrow bc i work in the morning. literally anything but spending more time in his horrible head oh my GOD.  anyway. teaser:

Which is silly—if his great big idea to escape the consequences of animus magic worked, it's only because writing his spells out forced him to think them over, and maybe a little bit of placebo effect. But I highly doubt the whole animus magic takes pieces of your soul thing. It makes no logical sense—we don't have souls, we have brains that trick us into thinking we have any control over ourselves when most of us are just here to reproduce and die, with the exception of a few gifted dragons, of course--such as myself. No, my guess is, if it's not just the phenomenon of dragons going evil with unlimited power and no consequences, animus magic has an effect on the part of the brain that handles empathy or self-control, and reduces dragons to their constant impulse to kill.

sorry i could unpack how much this passage says about him as a character. or i could just say that sharp-eyes' worldview can be summed up by this vine.
