v. over the moon

moonwashed [ 05 ]

over the moon.
to be very happy.

The beach looked a lot beautiful whenever it's on the night of the Moonbeam Festival.

The cold, freezing water reaching her feet was tickling her, and yet she continued to stand there, breathing in the festival air. She was wearing a white dress and she wondered if Mizuki would wear a blue dress . . .

Her face. Her voice over the sound of the waves reaching for them each second. Her hair. Her.

And then she smiled.

The morning Maris went to fetch her friend, she was hit by a car. It was extremely frustrating on her part, especially because she had told Mizuki that she was gonna eat lunch with her, and she was really looking forward to it. She turned on her bed over and over, imagining Mizuki waiting on the school garden alone . .

Her friends could be an option, but they did not even bother to visit her at least once. The time she spent alone in her room with a bandage on her head was enough to realize that she didn't need those friends anymore.

As she stood on the seaside, a pack of moonflower seeds was in her hand. Napatingin siya saglit dito. She wondered if Mizuki knew how to take care of flowers — she looked like the type of girl who could — and she thought that maybe they could even grow one together. She smiled at the thought of that, but when she caught herself thinking about her for the nth time that day, she slapped her own cheek.

In their town, giving moonflower seeds as a present to someone means an offering of a relationship because of one's feeling of adoration.

Amaris didn't know if that would still be the case once she saw Mizuki again.

Without thinking, her head turned around. Tumingin siya sa may lighthouse . . She was wearing a blue dress, as she thought. Her hands were on the railing, and her eyes were looking up the skies.

She's so beautiful, she thought. Napakapit siya sa bestida niya. Bumilis ang tibok ng puso niya . She's so beautiful, she thought again, and she meant that so much that she could cry and scream about it. Mizuki was the prettiest girl she'd ever seen and she wanted to hold her hand and claim it as hers.

They were setting up fireworks. Dali-dali siyang umalis saka tumakbo papunta sa lighthouse.

As she made her way there, Maris wondered if Mizuki continued to count one-hundred airplanes, because she did. She only stopped on the 99th and ignored every other airplane that she heard flying by.

She'd already thought of a wish, and she's going to wish for it on the lighthouse with Mizuki.

She wanted her to think of her. She wanted her to look at her. And when she opened the door towards where she was, her mind showed her a quick replay of the first time she'd seen her. On that nightfall, an airplane flying across the sky behind her, her wide eyes looking deep into hers.

Her world shifted the second that happened.

And she wasn't mad about it.

"Mizuki," sabi niya. Her name felt so real as she said that.

Mizuki, unlike before, didn't look shocked. She looked as though she was expecting Maris to come because when she saw her, she was already smiling.

Both girls have already counted 99 airplanes, and each of them refused to count each airplane that flew by. The both of them just stood there, catching up, the wind playing with their hair. Breathing, laughing, talking. Nothing special, but they felt at peace.

When silence fell in, Mizuki spoke.

"Hey," sabi nito. She was speaking slowly. "At least five airplanes already flew by."

Maris chuckled. "Yeah, oo nga, e."

"Bakit 'di natin binibilang?" she asked with a soft laugh. "Am I missing something?"

Maris was so close, and Mizuki wanted to move closer to her so their arms could touch. But she couldn't move an inch.

"Ilan na ba sa 'yo?" asked Maris.

Mizuki bit her lower lip. She considered lying — after all, if she did, baka mag-suggest na naman si Maris na mag-stay muna sila ro'n. But then again, Mizuki was the kind of person who takes wishing seriously, so she just decided she'd tell Maris the truth.

"99."

There was a pause.

"Me, too."

They laughed.

"Paunahan na lang sa next airplane?" asked Mizuki. She had to win their competition.

"Bet!" sagot naman ni Maris saka tumawa. She leaned into the railing, and she looked up the skies.

They stood there in silence as they waited for an airplane.

Mizuki was patiently waiting for an airplane. She even fought her own urge to look at Maris's face because she knew that if she did, she would find it hard to look away.

Until an airplane came.

"There it is!" sabi nito. Her heart was jumping. "I found the 100th first!"

Then, just as she said that with the widest smile she could muster, she looked at Amaris . . . whose eyes were closed.

She was then confused.

"Well?" Maris said, smirking. She turned her head and faced Mizuki with her whole body. "You found it first."

"Siyempre . . . your eyes were closed!"

"Stop whining and make a wish right now," sabi ni Maris. It was dark, but the birthmark on her cheek was a lot cuter that night as she tried to suppress her smile.

"That's—!"

"Magwi-wish na lang ako sa next airplane."

Natahimik na lang si Mizuki saka napahinga nang malalim. Napakagat siya ulit ng labi saka napakapit sa railing. Her wish suddenly flew out the window.

"Okay," Mizuki said. Her face warmed as she tried to think of a wish.

"Your wish wouldn't be effective kapag may dumating nang airplane tapos wala ka pa ring wish," babala ni Maris.

"Ano ba 'yan!" she said. "Okay, I-I'm gonna wish inside my head."

Maris gasped. "Let me hear it!"

Mizuki ignored her as she just proceeded to close her eyes tight and tried to wish, but she couldn't think of any. Ang gulo gulo ng nasa utak niya. She then panicked, and just out of nowhere thought of Maris's name as her wish.

Amaris.

Then she opened her eyes — slowly — only to see Maris looking straight at her.

It's like her wish already came true.

"Done?" tanong sa kanya nito gamit ang mahinang boses.

"Y-Yeah."

Maris smiled.

When she did, Mizuki felt soft all over. A part of her wanted to scream and another wanted to cry, but she couldn't do any of those, so she just stood there with her, while her heart and mind succumbed into a total mess. The mess that she liked anyway.

"Ikaw nanalo sa competition," sabi ni Maris. "What do you want me to do?"

There it is, she thought. She'd finally say it. She won't confess yet. Not yet . . .

There are beginnings that everyone has to take, and the both of them aren't an exception. Humigpit ang hawak niya sa railing.

"Eat lunch with me," sabi niya. She smiled. "Spend every lunchtime with me."

That way, we would know each other better, she thought. She could take it any way she wanted — an offering of friendship or something more, but Mizuki just wanted one thing — a beginning of the possibility of them.

And it was assured the moment Maris smiled.

"I won't get hit by a car this time."

Mizuki laughed at that, and then, a few moments after, another airplane flew by. Umangat ang tingin dito ni Maris. Her heart was still beating like crazy. What else did Mizuki mean by what she wanted them to do? Does she want friendship? Something more?

"When you make a wish," sabi bigla ni Mizuki, "you have to close your eyes and really imagine it. I promise it will come true."

Mizuki didn't fully mean that. Of course, wishes would come true if they're meant to come true — she just needed a reason for Maris to close her eyes . . . so she could look at her face without getting nervous.

Maris really was so beautiful.

Maris's eyes were closed. She felt silly, but even so, she intently focused on the dream she had with Mizuki — when they were holding each other's hands on the same place they were in that moment. The look on Mizuki's face, the warmth of her hand . . .

I wish to hold her hand.

When she opened her eyes, she was smiling.

"Done?" It was Mizuki's turn to ask.

Maris nodded as an answer, to which Mizu smiled at. She discretely moved closer to her so that their arms could touch. When her arm touched hers, she felt as though she was shot by a thunderbolt.

Paano pa kung kamay na ni Mizuki?

"What did you wish for?" Maris suddenly asked.

Mizuki blushed. "Secret ko nga."

"Why?" Maris pushed. "Dali na."

"Hindi pwede."

"Why not! Ako lang 'to."

"Ayokong sabihin."

"You can tell me!"

"Hindi—"

"Please?"

"Ikaw."

Napatahimik si Amaris. Mizuki breathed and looked away, wondering if it was right that she told her. The moon glowed a lot fainter every second Amaris didn't speak, and Mizu's throat had gotten tighter and tighter.

She was the wish. She always had been.

Amaris, on the other hand, was silenced. She didn't know what Mizuki meant by her being the wish. How was she the wish?

But, slowly, she reached inside her pocket. She inhaled. She didn't know if it was appropriate to smile when Mizu looked mortified, but she couldn't help it.

Mizuki's wish was her.

Her heart drummed so much at the thought of that.

"I think you have to count another one-hundred airplanes," sabi nito. Her heart was still drumming. Mizu's ears perked up. "and think of another wish."

Mizuki turned her head around, and all of a sudden, her heart felt like fireworks when she saw the moonflower seeds on top of Maris's hand. Suddenly the moon seemed bright, and the air seemed colder, but nothing else was much more beautiful than Maris's smile right in front of her eyes.

Amaris knew that Mizuki knew what that meant. It could be friendship, or it could be something else worth more — a birth of something, she could say — but all that she needed was for Mizuki to accept it.

"Let's grow this together," Mizu said with a smile.

As they stood there on the lighthouse laughing at their foolishness, they knew that that was only the beginning of what they could be — and they were aware of it. What they had and would have was something that had begun with a wish and ended with a wish — and, perhaps, with the one-hundredth airplane.

Mizuki had wished on many things — on 11:11s, on first stars, on meteors, but this was the first time she had ever wished for something that she didn't know was already granted to her.

And maybe she would continue to wish for other things, but then, if none of them came true anymore, she wouldn't mind. She looked at Amaris's smile upon the moonbeam, and she knew that no wishes would be worth more than her.

like the moonflowers,
their love had blossomed beneath
the star freckled skies.
