Chapter 16: Galactic Eclipse

Owen's POV

The salty breeze of Konikoni City tugged at my clothes as I stepped off the ferry, the hum of the bustling market greeting me. I could feel the heaviness of the situation pressing down on me, but I pushed it aside, focusing instead on the path ahead. My hand instinctively brushed against the six Poké Balls at my belt, the familiar warmth of my team close by, each one of them a reflection of my growth, my new resolve.

Hala walked slightly ahead, his familiar presence grounding me. His words before we left Melemele still echoed in my head.

"To face your future, Owen, you must first face your past. Olivia deserves an apology - and Akala deserves healing. Are you ready to give them that?"

Was I ready? I didn't know. All I knew was that I had to try.

The streets of Konikoni were alive with activity, but I caught the glances aimed my way - uneasy, cautious, distrustful. They remembered. How could they not? A few months ago, my tantrum had left parts of Akala Island in ruins. The rocks I'd shattered still scarred the cliffs outside the city, a constant reminder of the rage I couldn't control. And Olivia...

I clenched my fists, my shame threatening to swallow me whole. My Wonder-Traded Pokémon and I had torn through everything in sight. Olivia had tried to stop me, but I ran.

Now, here I was. Trying to pick up the pieces of the mess I'd made.

When we reached her store, I froze. The cool air inside beckoned, but it felt like a boundary I wasn't ready to cross. Hala nudged me forward.

"Go on, lad," he said gently. "This isn't about perfection - it's about progress."

I nodded stiffly and stepped inside. Olivia was behind the counter, her arms crossed and her gaze sharp as a freshly honed Doublade. The air was heavy, and every instinct told me to run. But I stayed.

Her eyes flicked over me, her lips pressing into a thin line. "In Arceus's name... it's you."

I opened my mouth to reply, but the soft creak of the staircase behind me made the words catch in my throat. A low hum filled the room, growing louder and louder. I turned my head slightly, just enough to catch a glimpse of a Probopass descending the stairs, its massive shadow stretching across the floor.

It stopped directly behind me, its presence as commanding as the weight of Olivia's gaze. The faint buzz of its magnetic field prickled at my skin, and the Mini-Noses began to orbit it slowly, as though silently assessing me.

I swallowed hard and forced myself to face Olivia again. Her expression hadn't changed, but the faintest glint of satisfaction flickered in her eyes. "I'm not here to fight," I said quietly, though my pulse betrayed me, hammering in my ears, "I came to apologise."

She raised an eyebrow. "Oh, did you now? For what, exactly?"

The weight of her stare pressed down on me. I took a deep breath, forcing myself to meet her gaze.

"For everything," I said, my voice shaking but firm. "For losing control, for running away when I couldn't face you. For the damage I caused to Akala and its people."

Her expression didn't soften, not even a little.

"And why now?" she asked coldly. "Why not then? Or the day after? Or the weeks after that?"

Her words cut deep, but I didn't back down. "Because I was a coward," I admitted. "I couldn't handle losing, and I couldn't handle the weight of what I'd done. So I ran. But I've spent these months training - not just as a Trainer, but as a person. Hala's taught me that strength isn't about power. It's about control, balance and peace. And I'm trying to find that."

For a long moment, Olivia just stared at me, her expression unreadable. The tension in the room coiled tighter, and I had no idea what she was thinking - or what she'd do next.

Then, without a word, she gave a sharp nod.

Before I could react, Probopass hummed, and a sudden magnetic force yanked at me. Metal fragments shot from its orbiting Mini-Noses, clamping onto my wrists and holding my arms firmly in place. The impact stung, and I staggered back, trying to pull free, but the grip was unyielding.

"What-!" I gasped, struggling against the bindings.

Olivia stepped around the counter, her strides slow and deliberate. "You think you can just waltz back here after what you did? Just a quick apology, nothing to make up for?" Her voice was calm, but every word landed like a hammer.

"I'm not running this time!" I snapped, my breath quick and uneven. "I came here to make things right!"

"Good," Olivia said coolly, her gaze boring into mine. "Then prove it. Stay right there and listen."

Probopass's grip didn't loosen, and I had no choice but to stand, my chest heaving as Olivia closed the distance between us.

Her eyes narrowed, and her voice dropped to a low, measured tone. "You didn't just destroy parts of Akala Island. You hurt the people. You hurt the very land itself - the island that I promised to protect as its Kahuna. You threatened to damage the bond I swore to the Island Guardian."

Her gaze flicked to Probopass, whose grip tightened around my wrists as if to reinforce her point. "And now, you think you can just walk away without any consequences?"

I opened my mouth to argue, but the words caught in my throat.

"I'm taking you to the police," Olivia said, her voice firm as she reached for her phone. "You'll answer for your actions. It's the least you deserve."

Before I could respond, a loud crash echoed through the doorway.

Hala came charging into the room, his face flushed with determination. He skidded to a halt, his eyes immediately locking onto Olivia. "Olivia, hold up!" he called out, his voice urgent. "Don't do this."

Olivia didn't move, her jaw tightening. "He doesn't get to just walk away from this, Hala."

"He made a mistake," Hala said, stepping forward. "But this punishment? It's not the way to help him. You know that."

"Help him?" Olivia scoffed. "He's destroyed lives, Hala. The damage he's caused isn't something we can just 'help' him through. He has to face the consequences."

Hala's eyes softened, and he stood tall, his voice carrying a sense of authority I hadn't heard from him before. "Owen knows that. He's here now because he wants to make things right. He's willing to face whatever punishment comes his way - but he shouldn't be dragged off to the police once again without being given a chance to prove himself."

The air was thick with tension. I was caught between them - two forces, both protective in their own ways, pulling me in different directions.

Olivia's eyes locked onto mine, her expression unreadable as she crossed her arms. "Fine," she said, her voice steady. "Last time we 'battled', it was clear that your Pokémon were nothing more than tools to you, machines for your strength. You used them as weapons, not as friends."

Her gaze hardened. "Pokémon are creatures of goodwill. They are drawn to those who are good of heart, and a true bond proves a person's worth."

"So battle me," Olivia said, her tone leaving no room for argument. "Prove yourself. Show me the bond you have with your Pokémon. If you can't do that, then you'll never earn my trust."

I swallowed hard. My hands still felt cold from the grip of Probopass, but I could feel my heart begin to race, the adrenaline surging through my veins.

Once I was released, the salty breeze of Konikoni City tugged at my clothes as I followed Olivia outside, the sounds of the bustling market fading behind us. The open space of a rocky battle area stretched out before us, bordered by the lush greenery of Akala Island, with the waves crashing in the distance.

Olivia stood across from me, her posture calm but unwavering. Probopass lingered in front of her, watching closely, its massive form a reminder that she wasn't taking this battle lightly.

I grabbed the first Poké Ball from my belt, my fingers brushing the surface. "Let's do this, Swampert," I muttered, throwing the ball into the air.

Swampert emerged with a heavy thud, its massive body shaking the ground beneath us as it let out a low growl.

"Earthquake, buddy!" I commanded, my voice firm.

With a mighty roar, Swampert slammed its fists into the ground. The earth cracked and trembled as a wave of force erupted from the ground, sending shockwaves through the battle field.

Olivia didn't flinch. She motioned for Probopass to step forward, raising its large iron-clad face as it braced itself against the attack.

"Impressive," Olivia said, her gaze sharp as she sized me up. "But this is just the beginning."

She stepped back, reaching for her Poké Ball. With a flick of her wrist, she switched out Probopass and released her next Pokémon, and I watched as a Lunatone floated into view, its crescent-shaped body glowing faintly under the island sun.

"Lunatone, use Psychic!" Olivia called out.

Lunatone's eyes glowed with an eerie light as it focused its energy, sending a pulse of Psychic power straight at Swampert. The attack struck hard, and Swampert stumbled backward, its footing faltering.

"Swampert, hang in there! Use Waterfall!" I shouted, gritting my teeth.

Swampert summoned a cascade of water from the air, sending a massive wave toward Lunatone. The water crashed into it, pushing it back and drenching the ground. But as the dust cleared, I saw that Swampert was wobbling, its energy clearly drained.

Olivia nodded, unfazed. "Lunatone, use Hypnosis."

The faint glow around Lunatone intensified, and Swampert's eyes fluttered as the hypnotic waves began to take hold. With a final, exhausted growl, Swampert collapsed onto the ground, knocked out.

"Swampert!" I muttered, swallowing hard, but I knew I had to keep going. I pulled out another Poké Ball.

"Blissey, it's your turn!" I tossed the ball into the air, and Blissey appeared, her cheerful nature present even in the heat of battle. She gave me a warm, reassuring smile.

"Blissey, use Seismic Toss!" I called, hoping her unexpected strength would give us an edge.

Blissey, with surprising agility for her large frame, lifted Lunatone off the ground and threw it with all her might. The Psychic-type collided with the ground with a heavy crash, clearly dazed.

Olivia, undeterred, called out, "Lunatone, Psychic!"

Lunatone's glowing eyes sparked, and another pulse of Psychic energy shot toward Blissey, but Blissey managed to dodge just in time, quickly launching another Seismic Toss to finish it off. Lunatone was knocked out.

"Lunatone, return!" Olivia said calmly, her expression unwavering as she sent out an Alolan Golem. The massive Pokémon appeared, its presence intimidating.

"Golem, use Rock Slide!" Olivia commanded.

Before Blissey could act, massive boulders rained down on her, knocking her off her feet. Blissey struggled but managed to stand up, showing determination.

"Blissey, use Seismic Toss again!" I shouted, hoping to land a solid blow on the massive Golem.

Despite her gentle nature, she summoned surprising strength as she lifted Alolan Golem with impressive effort and threw it to the ground with everything she had. It crashed with a thunderous thud, but it wasn't enough to take it down.

Olivia didn't hesitate. "Golem, Earthquake!"

The ground shook violently beneath us, sending Blissey tumbling to the earth with a deafening rumble. The impact left Blissey dazed, struggling to get back up.

With a final gasp, she collapsed, unable to continue.

"Blissey!" I shouted, panic flaring in my chest as I returned her to her Poké Ball. She had given it her all, but now it was time for the next.

"Great job, girl." I said, and quickly released Corviknight. "Corviknight, let's go! Use Steel Wing!"

Corviknight shot into the air, its wings gleaming as it flapped powerfully before diving toward Golem with intense speed. The steel-coated wings struck Golem with force, but it didn't seem to faze the massive Pokémon much.

Olivia raised an eyebrow. "Not bad, but you'll need more than just that."

With a grunt, Golem swung its fist at Corviknight, slamming the bird Pokémon to the ground with a heavy blow. Corviknight staggered but managed to get back on its feet, its wings flapping weakly.

"Corviknight, hang in there! Use Roost!" I commanded, hoping to give it some time to recover.

Corviknight landed gracefully, its body glowing as it healed from the damage. But Golem wasn't about to let up. It raised its massive fists and called down a barrage of boulders.

"Rock Slide!"

The rocks rained down, and Corviknight was caught in the onslaught. It tried to fight through, but the force of the attack overwhelmed it, sending it crashing to the ground with a defeated cry.

"Corviknight!" I shouted, rushing to recall it. I gritted my teeth, feeling the weight of the battle.

I was down to just three Pokémon now. But I wasn't going to stop. Not now.

I threw another Poké Ball, releasing Gallade.

"Gallade, use Close Combat!" I shouted.

Gallade lunged at Golem with incredible speed, landing blow after blow. Each strike hit with precise force, chipping away at Golem's rocky exterior. With a final, powerful hit, Gallade's fist connected with Golem's face, and the massive Pokémon staggered back, finally collapsing to the ground, defeated.

"Good job, dear friend," Olivia said, recalling Golem to its ball with a sigh. "You've made progress, Owen. But don't think this battle is over."

She quickly released her next Pokémon. "Lycanroc, let's go! Use Crunch!"

Before I could react, the midnight-form Lycanroc leapt at Gallade, its teeth glowing with dark energy. Gallade managed to dodge the initial attack, but Lycanroc's speed was overwhelming. With one swift, powerful strike, Lycanroc landed a hit to Gallade's side. Gallade staggered but quickly retaliated, landing a series of quick jabs.

However, Lycanroc's next move was too much. With a sudden Stone Edge, it hit Gallade square in the chest, sending it crashing to the ground, knocked out.

"G-Gallade!" I exclaimed, recalling it to its Poké Ball, feeling a pang of defeat.

I had to push forward. I could feel the pressure mounting as I reached for my next Poké Ball, sending out Roserade.

"Roserade, we need to finish this! Use Sludge Bomb!"

Roserade launched the toxic sludge at Lycanroc, hitting it hard and causing Lycanroc to stumble back. But Olivia wasn't fazed. She immediately switched to her next Pokémon.

"Relicanth, go! Use Rock Slide!"

Relicanth opened its mouth and launched a barrage of sharp stones toward Roserade. The rocks pummeled Roserade, knocking it back and leaving it reeling.

"Roserade, counter with Sludge Bomb!" I shouted.

But before Roserade could respond, Relicanth lunged forward with a swift Aqua Tail, hitting Roserade hard and sending it sprawling. The Water-type attack hit much harder than I expected, and Roserade fell, defeated.

"Roserade!" I called, recalling her. The battle was down to the wire now. I had just one Pokémon left.

I reached for the last Poké Ball on my belt and tossed it into the air. "Mimikyu, it's all up to you!"

Mimikyu materialised before me, the frayed fabric of its disguise swaying slightly in the breeze. Its beady eyes peeked out from beneath the jagged Pikachu mimic, glinting with determination. I met its gaze and gave it a small nod.

"Relicanth," Olivia called out, her voice steady, "let's finish this strong!"

Relicanth loomed before us, its rocky hide battered but unyielding, its presence as solid as the island itself.

"Mimikyu, use Play Rough!" I shouted, the weight of the battle pressing hard on my chest.

Mimikyu darted forward, its tiny form weaving with deceptive speed. It struck Relicanth with a powerful blow, sending the ancient Pokémon stumbling. A flicker of hope sparked within me—maybe we could do this. But Relicanth wasn't going down easily.

With a guttural roar, it retaliated with a devastating Aqua Tail. The water surged through the air like a tidal wave, slamming into Mimikyu. The impact shattered its Disguise ability with a loud crack, the fragile head of its costume drooping unnaturally. Mimikyu tumbled across the battlefield, skidding to a stop as its tiny body quivered.

"Mimikyu!" I called out, my heart clenching.

It struggled to its feet, its movements sluggish, one of its arms dragging slightly. But despite its battered state, Mimikyu turned to face Relicanth, its dark eyes burning with determination.

"Mimikyu, are you okay?" I asked, but the answer was clear. Its body swayed as it stood, but it refused to back down.

Olivia's voice cut through the tension. "Relicanth, finish this with Head Smash!"

Relicanth roared, lowering its head and charging forward with terrifying speed, its rocky hide glinting in the sunlight. Mimikyu staggered, trying to prepare itself to dodge, but its movements were sluggish, its body barely responding.

"Come on, Mimikyu!" I urged, desperation clawing at my chest.

Mimikyu attempted to leap to the side, but its injuries caught up with it. Relicanth's attack clipped it hard, sending Mimikyu flying. It hit the ground with a thud, its costume dragging behind it like a lifeless shadow.

I froze, my breath catching in my throat. Mimikyu twitched, trying once again to rise, but its body gave out, collapsing in the dust. I felt the weight of the battle crash over me like a wave.

I clenched my fists, instinct screaming at me to call another attack. But then I looked at Mimikyu, its small body trembling yet still trying to fight. My heart sank as I realised how much it had already given.

"Mimikyu, no more," I called softly, stepping forward. "You've done more than enough."

Mimikyu turned to me, its small head tilting as if to protest. But I was already reaching for its Poké Ball, recalling it in a beam of red light.

Olivia raised an eyebrow as I recalled my partner. "You're forfeiting?"

I stood, meeting her gaze. "This battle isn't worth Mimikyu getting seriously hurt. It's not about proving anything to you or anyone else if it means pushing them too far. I'd rather protect my Pokémon than win."

Her expression softened, a flicker of approval crossing her face. She crossed her arms, nodding slightly. "That's the kind of growth I was hoping to see. You've come a long way from Akala Island, Owen."

Hala, who had been silently observing from the sidelines, let out a hearty laugh. "You've made progress, boy. But the road to redemption is a long one. Remember this moment. Pokémon are more than partners in battle – they're your family."

Olivia stepped forward, extending her hand. "You might've lost the battle, Owen, but in a way, you've won something far more important. Keep going. And maybe one day, you'll prove to yourself that you've truly changed."

I took her hand, the warmth of her grasp grounding me. Looking down at the Poké Ball in my other hand, I silently vowed to never let Mimikyu – or any of my Pokémon – down again.

Hala chuckled softly at Olivia's words, a knowing glint in his eyes. He gave a small, reassuring nod, his voice calm but filled with warmth.

"I've seen many trainers over the years, but seeing Owen put in the effort, not just in battle but in his heart - that's truly a joy to witness. It's a path he's still on, but today... Today, he's taken another step forwards."

Olivia's gaze lingered on me for a moment before shifting back to Hala. "That may be true, but he's not been forgiven yet," she said, her tone firm, though there was no malice in her words. "Owen has a lot to make up for with the people of Akala. Trust isn't given back easily - it's earned, step by step."

"I know," I said quietly, meeting her sharp gaze. "I don't expect forgiveness overnight."

Olivia studied me, her eyes searching for something, before she gave a small nod. "Good."

Then, with a casual shrug, she said, "Well, since I won't be dragging you to the police station today, we all might as well grab a bite. I'm starving, what do you guys say?"

The words hung in the air for a moment, and I was about to respond when a low, distinct hum began to rise in the distance. It wasn't the sound of waves or the chatter of the marketplace - it was mechanical, ominous, and growing louder.

I turned towards the horizon, my body tensing as I spotted a formation of sleek ships cutting through the sea, heading toward the open waters. Their metallic sheen caught the sunlight, and emblazoned on their hulls was a yellow 'G'. Team Galactic.

Olivia's eyes narrowed, all traces of her earlier ease evaporating. "What the hell are they doing here?" she muttered, her voice sharp with suspicion.

Hala, who had just begun to walk away, froze in his tracks and turned back toward us, his expression darkening as he followed our line of sight. "That's trouble," he said gravely. "And it's heading straight towards Aether Paradise."

I felt my pulse quicken, my earlier exhaustion replaced with a sharp focus. "I need to figure out what they're up to," I said, glancing at Olivia.

She nodded, already pulling out a Poké Ball. "I'll stay here. If Team Galactic's pulling something, they might try hitting Akala while everyone's distracted."

I froze, my gut twisting. Lillie. Aether Paradise is her home. If Team Galactic was willing to strike there, would she be safe? The thought of her getting caught up in this mess sent a wave of panic through me.

I took a breath, forcing myself to focus. "Alright," I said finally. "I'll head to Aether Paradise. If Team Galactic's up to something, I'll stop them."

Before I could take another step, Hala's voice broke through the tense silence. "Owen! Hold on a moment!"

The ex-Kahuna took a step towards me. "If you're heading out to investigate those ships, I'd appreciate a lift. My old legs aren't as quick as they used to be, and I suspect I'll be more useful alongside you than waiting here."

I hesitated, glancing at Corviknight's Poké Ball in my hand. "Are you sure, Hala? This could get dangerous."

The old man chuckled softly, a warm yet unyielding sound. "Danger is nothing new to me, boy. You're talking to one of Alola's Elite Four, after all. Besides, if Team Galactic is stirring trouble, you'll need all the help you can get."

I nodded, unable to argue with his logic. Releasing Corviknight from its ball, I glanced back at Olivia. She gave me a small wave, her usual smirk tempered by something softer.

"Take care, both of you," she said firmly.

I climbed onto Corviknight's back, reaching down to help Hala up behind me. Once he was settled, Corviknight flapped its powerful wings, lifting us into the air. As we soared toward the source of the commotion, my thoughts turned to Lillie. Whatever Team Galactic was planning, I wouldn't let it reach her. Not here, not ever.

Lillie's POV

Altaria descended in a graceful arc, her soft wings shimmering as we landed on the main platform of Aether Paradise.

Hau landed beside me on Noivern, his usual grin replaced by a hard-set frown. He was quiet as he dismounted, his hands clenching into fists. Carmine was next, hopping off her Toucannon with a look of annoyance masking what I knew was concern.

"Good... we've all made it, but we don't have much time." I said, my voice steady despite the knot twisting in my stomach, and we all returned our Pokémon.

All three of us stopped as we saw him: Gladion, standing at the forefront of a line of Aether grunts. He didn't move as we approached, his Silvally by his side, its crest shimmering in the low light. The sight of him like that, commanding and unshaken, made me feel the tiniest bit better.

"You've seen them too, then," Gladion said, his voice calm but cold. His sharp eyes flicked to me, then to Hau and Carmine. "The ships. They're heading straight here. No diversions, no delays."

Carmine crossed her arms. "Yeah, we saw. Big, flashy, and just begging for someone to sink them." She tilted her head, a smirk tugging at her lips. "Too bad my Toucannon doesn't have actual cannons, despite the name."

"Not funny," Hau muttered, his hands still clenched. "This isn't just a warning, is it? They're coming to attack, aren't they?"

Gladion nodded, his gaze never leaving the horizon. "It's like Lillie said. A full-on assault. Mother's already secured the labs and evacuated the civilians. The grunts and I will form the first line of defence."

I stepped forward, Altaria's warm presence at my back. "We'll fight with you. They're not placing a finger on anything or anyone here."

Gladion's eyes met mine, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of gratitude. "Good. You'll need to be ready - this won't be like anything we've seen before."

Carmine grinned, rolling her shoulders. "Bring it on. I could use a real challenge."

Hau forced a smile, but his usual lightness wasn't there. "We'll stop them. We have to."

I looked at the horizon, where the hum of engines was growing louder, the faint shapes of Team Galactic's ships cutting through the waves. My fingers tightened around Altaria's reins, preparing myself for what was to come.

The first ship hissed as it docked, its ramp lowering with a mechanical whir. The tension was suffocating, and I caught myself holding my breath as the first figures stepped off.

Team Galactic grunts spilled onto the outside dock, their silver-and-black uniforms gleaming, and behind them came their Pokémon - Golbat, Purugly, and Toxicroak, snarling and ready for battle. At their head stood a woman with striking red hair - Commander Mars.

"Well, well," she said, her voice laced with mockery. "The infamous Aether Paradise. I was hoping for more of a welcoming committee, but I suppose this will do."

"Turn back," Gladion ordered, his tone icy. "Whatever you're planning here, it's not happening."

Mars tilted her head, her grin widening. "Oh, sweetie, you think we're asking for permission?" She gestured behind her, where more grunts were pouring out of the other ships, flanked by Pokémon. "We're here to take what we need. And you're in the way."

"Not without a fight," I said, stepping forward, my fingers tightening around Altaria's reins.

Mars's gaze landed on me, her grin twisting into something sharper. "Ah, Lillie. I've heard about you. Such a shame you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, pretty girl." She raised a Poké Ball. "But don't worry. I'll make this quick."

Before she could release her Pokémon, Gladion snapped his fingers, and the Aether grunts surged forward, releasing their own Pokémon. The docks erupted into chaos as Golbat darted through the air, Galvantula and Raichu unleashed bursts of electricity, and the ground trembled under the weight of battling Pokémon.

"Lillie!" Gladion barked over the noise. "Take Carmine and Hau and flank them. Cut off their reinforcements!"

I nodded, swinging onto Altaria's back. "Hau, Carmine, let's go!"

Hau scrambled onto Noivern, while Carmine smirked, hopping onto her Toucannon. "Finally. Let's show these clowns what we're made of."

As we took off into the sky, the battle raged below, and my stomach churned at the sight of the chaos.

"Altaria, let's pick up the pace!" I urged, the wind whipping against my face as we soared towards the second wave of grunts spilling out of the ships.

I slid off Altaria's back, my boots hitting the ground with a firm thud. Hau and Carmine touched down next to me, their Pokémon ready for battle.

The Team Galactic grunts swarmed the dock like a hive of Beedrill, their Pokémon already released: Golbat screeching in the air, Houndoom snarling with flames licking at their jaws, and Bronzong floating ominously behind them.

I took a deep breath, my fingers tightening around a Poké Ball. Stay calm, Lillie. You've trained for this.

"Altaria, stay close," I said. Then, with a swift motion, I threw my first Poké Ball. "Clefable, you're up!"

The pink fairy appeared in a flash of light, her wings flaring as she twirled gracefully on the battlefield.

"Golbat, Air Cutter!" one of the grunts commanded.

The bat Pokémon dove at Clefable, slicing through the air with sharp, spinning blades of wind.

"Clefable, Dazzling Gleam!" I countered.

Clefable glowed brilliantly, unleashing a burst of multicoloured light that struck Golbat mid-air. It screeched in pain before crashing to the ground, fainted.

"Not bad," Carmine called over her shoulder as she commanded Toucannon to fire a powerful Beak Blast at a Toxicroak.

"Don't get distracted!" Hau shouted, his Raichu zipping past us to fire off a Thunderbolt at a Bronzong, the electric sparks lighting up the battlefield.

Another grunt stepped forward, releasing a Purugly. Its sleek body glinted under the sunlight as it darted forward with surprising speed.

"Clefable, switch out!" I returned her to her Poké Ball and tossed out another. "Comfey, let's go! Use Draining Kiss!"

Comfey twirled through the air, her floral wreath glowing as she leapt towards Purugly, draining its energy with a burst of magical light. Purugly staggered back, hissing, but the grunt didn't back down.

"Slash!" he barked.

The feline Pokémon slashed at Comfey with its claws, but Comfey dodged gracefully, her petals fluttering in the breeze.

"Finish it with Energy Ball!" I shouted.

A green orb of energy formed in front of Comfey before she launched it, hitting Purugly squarely in the chest. It collapsed with a thud, fainted.

"Nice one!" Hau called as he dodged a Flamethrower from a Houndoom.

But there wasn't time to celebrate. More grunts poured onto the platform, their Pokémon joining the chaos.

"Togekiss, your turn!" I shouted, releasing her in a flash. "Aura Sphere on that Bronzong!"

Togekiss swooped gracefully through the air, her wings glowing as she sent out a blue ball of pure power, and I followed up immediately with another move.
"Focus Blast, now!"

She obeyed my command with a powerful energy blast, slamming into Bronzong and knocking it out.

Carmine whistled from her position as Toucannon landed another Beak Blast. "You're on fire, Lillie!"

"Ribombee, let's finish this wave!" I called, releasing her onto the battlefield. "Pollen Puff!"

Ribombee flitted through the air, releasing a puff of golden pollen that burst into a dazzling explosion, taking out the last of the Golbat in the area. The platform shook from the impact, and for a moment, there was an eerie silence as the last of the fainted Pokémon were recalled.

But the moment didn't last. One of the grunts pushed forward, releasing a massive Gyarados. Its roar echoed over the dock, the sheer force of it making me flinch. The Pokémon towered over us, its fangs glinting menacingly as it lunged forward.

I swallowed hard, gripping Altaria's Poké Ball tightly. "Seren, you're up!"

Altaria swooped back into the fray, her soft, cloud-like wings spreading wide as she faced down the intimidating opponent.

"Gyarados, Ice Fang!" the grunt barked.

Gyarados lunged forward with surprising speed, its fangs glowing with icy energy.

"Altaria, dodge and use Dragon Pulse!" I commanded.

Altaria twisted in midair, barely avoiding the snapping jaws, and countered with a burst of draconic energy. The attack hit Gyarados square in the chest, but the massive Pokémon shook it off, roaring even louder.

"Dragon Dance, Gyarados!" the grunt yelled.

I bit my lip as Gyarados began to glow, its speed and power increasing with each step of its eerie, hypnotic movements.

"Altaria, keep your distance! Another Dragon Pulse!"

Altaria let out a high-pitched cry, firing another beam of energy, but Gyarados was too quick. It surged forward like a tidal wave, slamming Altaria with a thrashing Aqua Tail. The force of the blow sent her spiraling through the air, her wings faltering as she fought to regain control.

"No!" I screamed, my chest tightening as I watched her tumble. "Altaria, please!"

She flapped her wings, trying to stay aloft, but the strain was clear. My heart pounded as I clenched my fists. Is this it?

"Come on, Altaria!" I called, my voice shaking. "You can do this! I believe in you!"

Altaria turned her gaze to me, and for a moment, the chaos around us faded. Her eyes burned with determination, the same spark I'd seen in her since the day we first met. I felt a lump rise in my throat, my connection with her stronger than ever.

"You're so strong," I whispered, my voice trembling but resolute. "I believe in you, Seren! Don't give up yet!"

Her gaze softened, and then she let out a fierce, defiant cry. She flapped her wings with renewed vigour, steadied herself in the air, and shone with a light that seemed to radiate from her very soul.

The keystone on my bracelet began to glow, responding to the bond between us. Warmth surged through my chest, spreading to every part of me. It wasn't just light - it was hope, trust, and love all combined into one overwhelming force.

I raised my wrist high, tears brimming in my eyes. "Altaria... let's show them our strength! Mega Evolve!"

The light engulfed her, bright enough to chase away the shadows around us. I shielded my eyes, feeling the energy grow as her form began to change. Her wings expanded, growing larger and fluffier, their radiant glow like a protective shield. Her body shone with a newfound strength, every inch of her exuding power and grace.

When the light faded, Mega Altaria hovered before me, her presence commanding and awe-inspiring. My breath caught in my throat as I took her in - she wasn't just my Pokémon. She was my partner, my friend, and together we were unstoppable.

The grunt stumbled back, his voice wavering. "Gyarados, Ice Fang, now!"

I wiped my eyes and pointed forward, my voice steady and sure. "Altaria, let's finish this! Use Moonblast!"

Altaria sang a melody that echoed with power, summoning a brilliant orb of moonlight. It pulsed with energy, every ounce of our bond poured into its creation. Gyarados lunged, its icy fangs glinting, but Altaria released the Moonblast, the radiant light colliding with its charge.

The explosion of energy lit up the battlefield, and when the dust settled, Gyarados lay motionless on the dock. Altaria hovered above, her wings glowing faintly, a victorious cry echoing in the air.

I staggered forward, tears streaming down my face as I looked up at her. "You did it, Seren! We did it!"

She descended, nuzzling against me gently. I wrapped my arms around her neck, feeling her warmth and strength, and for a moment, it felt like nothing in the world could break us.

Carmine jogged over, her grin wide. "Now that's what I call a power move. You've definitely earned some bragging rights, Lillie."

Hau gave me a thumbs-up, his Raichu bouncing next to him. "You really showed them! This was the second wave, but there's no way that was the last of them."

I nodded, returning Altaria and clutching her Poké Ball tightly.

As I caught my breath, I saw a figure sprinting toward us across the battlefield. It was Gladion, his expression sharp and urgent, his Aether President coat billowing behind him as he closed the distance.

"Lillie!" he called out, skidding to a stop in front of me. His voice was laced with frustration and barely concealed anger. "Their Commander slipped through the chaos. She might already be inside the labs!"

My heart dropped. "The labs?" I repeated, my grip tightening on Altaria's Poké Ball.

"Yes," he confirmed, his gaze flickering toward the main building. "The grunts outside were just a smokescreen. You have to protect the tech!"

Carmine crossed her arms, her brow furrowed. "So, what are we standing around for? Let's go."

Hau looked between us, determination sparking in his eyes. "We can't let her get away with whatever she's planning. Come on!"

Gladion nodded sharply. "I have to stay here to command the troops, but best of luck. I believe in all of you."

The three of us took off toward the building, the weight of the situation driving us forward. Whatever Mars was after in those labs, we weren't going to let her have it without a fight.

We sprinted towards the Aether Paradise's central building, the hum of battle still echoing from the docks. As we reached the entrance, the air inside felt cooler, quieter, but no less tense.

We descended into the lower levels, the faint glow of the labs ahead casting eerie reflections on the pristine white walls. The silence didn't last long. The sound of voices - shouting, sharp commands - echoed down the corridor.

Carmine slowed, holding out an arm to stop us. "Sounds like trouble up ahead."

I peered around the corner and felt a wave of relief and dread all at once. Lusamine stood at the near end of the lab, her arms outstretched, blocking a group of Galactic grunts and none other than Commander Mars. The fiery-haired woman's lips curled into a smirk as her Purugly stood guard beside her, the Pokémon's sharp claws flexing menacingly.

"Mother!" I called, rushing forward.

She glanced back, her expression a mix of surprise and determination. "Lillie? You shouldn't be here, this is dangerous!"

"Like we're going to just leave you to handle this alone," I shot back, stepping beside her. Carmine and Hau flanked me, their Pokémon ready.

Mars raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. "Oh, great. More brats. Just what I needed to make my day perfect." She snapped her fingers, and the grunts around her released a swarm of Toxicroack and Skuntank into the room.

Hau cracked his knuckles, grinning. "Guess that means it's our turn."

"Let's clear the way," Carmine said sharply, tossing out Sinistcha. "You take Mars, Lillie. Show her what happens when you mess with Alola."

I turned back to Mars, whose smirk had widened. "Gillan told me a lot about you. Let's see what you've got."

I tightened my grip on my Poké Ball, determination surging through me. "Mars, this ends now."

With a flick of her wrist, she sent forth her Purugly, its sharp eyes gleaming as it sized me up.

"Seren, I need you again!" I called, releasing my partner. Altaria materialised in a flash of light, her wings spread wide as she let out a melodic cry.

"Purugly, Fake Out!" Mars ordered.

Before Altaria could react, Purugly dashed forward, slamming its paw into her with stunning speed. Altaria flinched, momentarily staggered as she struggled to regain her composure.

"Shake it off, Altaria!" I urged. "Use Dragon Pulse!"

Altaria steadied herself, releasing a glowing beam of energy that surged toward Purugly. It struck the Pokémon head-on, but Mars's smirk didn't falter.

"Purugly, Aerial Ace!"

Purugly leapt into the air with unnatural grace, slicing through Altaria with razor-sharp precision. Altaria cried out, her wings faltering as she dropped a few feet, still damaged from the fight against Gyarados.

"Altaria, don't give up! Use Cotton Guard!" I shouted.

Altaria flapped her wings, a protective layer of fluffy cotton forming around her, but it didn't seem to faze Mars.

"Too little, too late," she taunted. "Purugly, finish it with Play Rough!"

Purugly lunged forward, its claws and tail glowing as it unleashed a brutal combo of swipes and strikes. Altaria crumpled under the onslaught, falling to the ground with a weak cry. My heart clenched as I recalled her, my legs trembling beneath me.

"You thought you could stop me?" Mars sneered, stepping closer. "Pathetic. Purugly, show her what happens when I mess with Alola."

Purugly advanced, its claws gleaming as it raised a paw, ready to strike.

My heart raced as I scrambled backwards, my body nearly frozen in fear.

Just as Purugly's razor-Sharp claws came down, a blur of motion crashed into it, sending the Pokémon tumbling across the floor with a startled yowl. My breath caught, my mind racing to process what had just happened.

I looked up, heart pounding, to see a figure standing between me and Purugly. For a split second, I couldn't believe my eyes.

"Owen?" I whispered, disbelief thick in my voice.

He turned slightly, his familiar face shadowed by fury as he fixed his glare on Mars and her Purugly. "Not on my watch," he said, his voice low and steady, yet carrying a dangerous edge.

Mars's smirk faltered, her confidence wavering. "Well, well," she sneered, trying to mask her unease. "Boss's little troublemaker himself, out here in Alola. How sweet. Here to play hero?"

"Shut up, Mars" Owen muttered, his focus unwavering as he reached for his Poké Ball. The intensity radiating from him was palpable, his presence commanding the room in a way I hadn't seen before.

He glanced back at me, his expression softening. "Stay behind me, Lillie. I've got this."

...

Mars gritted her teeth, her calm demeanour cracking as her Purugly fell to the floor, fainted from the final strike of Owen's Corviknight. She glared daggers at him, her frustration palpable as she recalled her Pokémon.

"You're a real pain, you know that?" she spat, her voice venomous. "But don't think for a second you've won."

Owen stepped forward, his hand hovering near his next Poké Ball. "You've already lost, Mars. It's over. Walk away now before you make it worse for yourself."

But Mars didn't back down. Instead, she reached into her bag, a twisted smile creeping onto her face as she pulled out a small, cylindrical device. My heart stopped when I realised what it was: a bomb.

"If we can't have the technology to access Ultra Space, neither can you," she said coldly, her thumb hovering over the detonator. The room seemed to freeze, the hum of the nearby machinery amplifying the tension.

"No!" I shouted, taking a step forward, but Owen held his arm out, stopping me. His expression didn't waver, though I could see the calculation in his eyes.

"Mars," he said, his voice dangerously calm. "You don't want to do this. Destroying us and this lab won't bring you the victory you're so desperate for."

She let out a bitter laugh, her grip tightening on the detonator. "You don't get it, do you? This isn't about winning. This is about making sure you lose."

Owen took a small step forward, his movements deliberate. "And what happens when this blows up? Do you think Team Galactic will come out unscathed? Do you think my father will care about what you've done? He'll just continue with the project without a single thought of you."

Mars hesitated, her eyes darting between Owen and the detonator. The confidence in her posture wavered just enough to betray her doubt.

I clenched my fists, my voice trembling but firm. "This isn't the way, Mars. You've already lost today. Don't make it worse for everyone, including yourself."

For a moment, it seemed like she might lower the device, but then her jaw clenched, and her thumb pressed down. The room filled with a chilling beep. My stomach dropped as I spotted the timer on the bomb: 90 seconds and counting.

The ticking was deafening, every second driving a sharp pang of fear into my chest. The timer blinked 01:27, its ominous red glow casting shadows across the room.

"No!" I screamed, panic clawing at my throat.

Seemingly out of nowhere, Hala's booming voice cut through the chaos. "ENOUGH!"

I turned just in time to see him lunge at Mars. His movements were swift despite his age, and before Mars could react, he wrenched the detonator from her grasp. In the same fluid motion, he grabbed her by the collar and hurled her toward the open door of Secret Lab A.

"No!" Mars shrieked, her boots scraping against the floor as she resisted, but Hala shoved her through the door and slammed it shut behind her, locking it in one swift motion.

The timer's restless ticking and a sudden shout brought me back to the present.
"Lillie!" Hau's voice cracked as he turned to me, his panic mirroring my own. "What do we do?"

My mind froze, racing and empty all at once. I had no clue how to disarm a bomb, but one thing was certain: if we didn't act now, the entire lab, and everyone in it, would be destroyed.

Just then, a familiar voice rang out, clear and commanding. "Lillie!"

I turned to see my mother rushing towards me, her expression a mixture of determination and urgency. "We can do this, together," Lusamine said, dropping to her knees beside me.

I hesitated, staring at her in disbelief. "Mum... you know how to-?"

"No time to explain," she interrupted, already opening the bomb's casing with surprisingly steady hands. "I've worked with devices similar to this during my research. Follow my lead."

00:50.

The room fell silent except for the relentless ticking and the hum of the lab's machines. My hands trembled as I crouched beside her, nodding. "Tell me what to do."

Lusamine's voice softened, but her pace remained relentless. "Look for the stabiliser wires. They're usually blue. You'll need to cut them simultaneously while I disarm the failsafe."

My fingers fumbled through the tangled mess of wires, heart pounding as I located the ones she mentioned. "I see them," I whispered, forcing myself to focus.

00:40.

"Good," Lusamine said, her tone steady, though a bead of sweat rolled down her temple. "Now, there's a pressure plate inside. If it senses tampering, it'll accelerate the countdown. I'll handle that while you cut the wires. Ready?"

"Ready," I said, though my voice wavered.

00:30.

Together, we moved in perfect synchrony. Lusamine carefully pried open the failsafe mechanism, her precision honed by years of intricate lab work. I positioned the wire cutters, my grip tightening as the timer ticked closer to zero.

00:10.

"Steady," she said, her gaze flicking between the failsafe and the timer. "On my count. Three... two..."

I closed my eyes for half a second, breathing deeply.

"One... cut!"

The wires snapped in unison, and the timer froze at 00:03, the red digits glaring at us as if mocking our efforts.

For a moment, the room was utterly silent. Then the hum of the machines returned, and the bomb let out a soft beep before powering down entirely.

I let out a shaky breath, my hands still clutching the wire cutters. "We did it," I whispered, turning to my mother.

Lusamine exhaled deeply, a small, relieved smile crossing her face. "We did it."

Hau let out a loud whoop, rushing forward to hug both of us. "You two are incredible!"

Owen stood at the doorway, his expression unreadable as he watched us. "That was close," he said, his tone quieter than usual.

The loud banging of Mars's fists on the sealed lab door interrupted the moment, but instead of fear, it only brought a sense of triumph.

"Let her stew for a while," Carmine said, grinning. "She's not going anywhere."

We all shared a laugh, the tension finally breaking. For the first time since the news of Team Galactic had spread, it felt like we'd truly won a battle - not just against them, but for each other. And for the first time in what felt like forever, I was hopeful for what tomorrow might bring...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi everyone! Thank you so much for reading my story up until this point! I hope you enjoyed chapter 16!
Now things are really going down! Actually, I have the next 4 chapters lined up and ready to go already xD but I'll wait a bit and keep my weekly release schedule, so you can look forward to a new chapter every Sunday.
I'm aiming for the story to end around chapter 23-25. I think that's a nice length, especially considering most chapters are around 6k-8k words now (most Wattpad chapters are between 1k-2k).
If this length is good for you, let me know!
Question of the chapter:
What's your least favourite Pokémon?
Not entirely sure about my Nr.1 but Quaquaval, Cinderace and Inteleon are definitely my least favourite starters and some of my least favourite Pokémon overall.
As I said, hope you enjoyed it, and I'll see you in the next chapter! You may go away now.
