For once, Goldie wanted Sharon to read a story before her bedtime. It was still broad daylight rather than night where the moonlight usually draped in through the curtains of Goldie's room. They hadn't finished The Little Mermaid, so naturally, Goldie chose that.

"Suddenly, it became very dark and the wind picked up. The sailors started to run about on deck. They pulled down the sail. The ship dipped and swooped.  It rolled side to side, and up and down on the high waves. Then lightning. Thunder. A strong rainstorm hit. The poor ship started to tip on the rough waves!  It was so dark that the Little Mermaid could see nothing. Then lightning lit up the sky, and she could see the young prince on deck. He seemed to be the only one still there! He was working hard to keep the ship afloat. He was throwing ropes out to his men who had jumped. But then, all at once, the waves got very high and the ship started to tip over. The Prince was flung to the side of the ship and thrown overboard! Down into the sea he fell."

Goldie whimpered, "The Prince."

"He dropped very fast. What was the Little Mermaid to do? She knew that human beings cannot live under the water. She dove deep and fast. She reached out and was able to grab his shirt. Then she swam up to the surface as fast as she could. At last she could pull his head above the water. There the two of them floated as the waves rose and fell. By morning, the storm had passed. Yet the prince was as still as he had been all night. From far off the Little Mermaid saw tops of hills. 'Land!' she said.
She swam to the shore, pulling him behind her. It was not easy to pull the young man up onto dry sand, but she did it. Was he dead? She sang a sad song. All of a sudden, the prince started to move. 'Oh! Are you all right?' she asked and touched his forehead.

Goldie touched Sharon's forehead, causing her to smile and touch the hand on her forehead.

"I'm all right," Sharon responded.

Goldie smiled for a moment, leaning to brush her nose against Sharon's nose before snapping back abruptly. She smelled something in the air. It was a familiar scent, but she couldn't place it.

There were knocks on the door. Sharon glanced at Goldie who was still and sniffing the air. She grabbed a gun from under a cushion and walked to the door quietly. She cracked the door open, eyeing the two strangers in front of her.

"Can I help you?" she questioned.

The man sniffed the air, clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth. The woman next to her responded.

"Sirens?" Sharon questioned, recognizing the language.

She could feel one of them poking in her mind, but she willed them out. They weren't attacking, but she had no tell if they were being controlled or not. From behind, Goldie clicked her tongue in response, moving closer to the door.

"Goldie, don't," Sharon warned.

"Family," she whispered, looking at her with the biggest, brightest eyes she could muster.

"Don't look at me like that," Sharon huffed.

The man clicked his tongue rapidly, causing Goldie to retaliate and shove herself in between Sharon and the door. She looked up at the man, clicked her tongue and hissed, waiting for his response. Once he gave it to her, she looked between the two before hugging them. They exchanged more words in their native language before Sharon dragged them into the house to avoid any sightseers.

Goldie placed a hand on Sharon's forehead. "All right?"

Sharon sighed. "Yeah, I'm all right, but I want answers."
