chapter five

// I attempted to draw Dan and Phil from moods but idk if I like it but still maybe it can make you feel better about your art bc it's so sh*t lol //

dan

Dan can't work out why Phil Lester would ever want to be his friend.

Nevertheless, here Phil is, beside him even after Dan cried half of the Pacific Ocean onto his shoulder. He's horrified when he finally lets go to see a giant damp patch on Phil's top.

"Uh- s-sorry! I-I'm s-so sorry!" Dan stammers, drying his eyes with his own sleeve this time, "I just- I-I'm sorry!"

"It's okay Dan, I don't mind, seriously,"  Phil laughs lightly, gently placing his hand on Dan's shoulder, "you're my friend yeah?"

"I-uh-b-but..." Dan stammers, "w-why?"

"Because Dan, I told you. I don't like seeing you so alone. You belong here, and I'm going to prove that you do," Phil says, smiling at Dan.

"Y-you'd d-do that?" Dan asks with wide eyes.

"Yes I would, you deserve to be here as much as everyone else," Phil says.

"E-even w-without a-a m-m-mood?" Dan asks quietly, his eyes on the ground and cheeks pink with shame.

"Especially without a mood," Phil says warmly, "do you want to hang out after school?"

"R-really?" Dan asks with wide eyes, looking up into Phil's warm blue ones, "w-with me?"

"Yes, with you. Are you in?" Phil asks with a raised eyebrow and a smile.

"Y-yes," Dan says with a small smile.

"Good, meet me here after school then," Phil says, "we can hang out at my house, get to know each other better."

"O-okay," Dan stammers, unsure whether this is a joke on him, he half expects Phil to turn around and say 'ha, you thought I'd actually want to be friends with an emotionless freak?!'.

But Phil just smiles at him again before walking to his next class. Dan walks the other way, heading to his own classroom, sitting up the back again in the corner.

As he sits at his desk, doodling absentmindedly on his open page, Dan thinks of Phil, trying to process what actually just happened. Phil spoke to him, he was nice, he invited Dan to hang out after school...

No matter how many times Dan replays the scenario inside of his head, he always draws to the same, shocking conclusion;

That he, Dan Howell - the resident emotionless weirdo - may have just made a friend.

***

To say Dan is nervous as he waits for Phil is the understatement of the century, perhaps millennium.

His palms are sweating, his hair, due to a nervous sweat, had begun to curl horrendously, his hands are shaking slightly and his stomach is twisted into an uncomfortable knot.

His mind won't shut up either, which isn't unusual for him, but at this moment it really isn't helping him. Not that his mind ever makes him feel better anyway...

What if he doesn't show? What if he does show with the school behind him to laugh at you? What if... His mind is whispering to him.

But Phil's mood would've given that away, wouldn't it? It was bright sun the whole time, so he felt happy. That isn't the mood for when you're lying to someone.

But then again, what the hell does Dan know about moods? He doesn't even have one so he is far from an expert on them. No one knows much about them except they show your emotions. You can't touch moods, your hand will go right through them.

"Dan? You okay? You look deep in thought," Phil says, approaching Dan and startling him.

Dan just stands there, staring at Phil, filled with nerves and relief that he actually came.

"Well, let's go I guess, my house is a ten minute walk," Phil says with a smile, his mood now an excited puppy running around in circles above him.

Dan nods and follows after him. They remain relatively silent throughout the walk, until Phil decides to break the silence.

"Do you like cats Dan?" Phil asks, turning to face Dan, a kitten above his head now.

"Yeah, I-I do," Dan says, his voice gentle and soft, shoving his hands in the pockets of his black pullover.

"Good, because I have a cat, well kitten for now. He's called Winston. I'm allergic to cats, but it isn't bad I just can't shove my face into his fur, although I've done that a few times," Phil rambles as they continue walking.

Dan doesn't mind Phil's rambling, it's a nice change from the awkward silence. A small smile flickers onto Dan's lips as he listens to Phil talk about his kitten.

Phil stops out the front of a medium sized house. It's two stories and is pure white with a grey roof. With a neatly trimmed garden, it's a rather modern, stylish house.

"Mum and dad are out," Phil says, "at work. They don't come home until late so you'll have to meet them another time. It's just gonna be us."

"O-okay," Dan says, following Phil inside after he unlocks the door.

The inside is as modern and stylish as the outside, all grey and white with aesthetic touches of colour everywhere. Dan wishes his house was this nice, but his mother is too busy to style their house nicely. Dan takes his shoes off, leaving them at the front door with his backpack but his black, mismatched socks remain.

"Well, do you want something to eat?" Phil asks and Dan nods.

After grabbing some crisps and popcorn, they take the food up to Phil's room, which seems to reflect Phil's personality perfectly. He funnily enough has a bedspread similar to Dan's own, only Dan's is grey, white and black and Phil's with green and blue. His room is filled with little objects which Dan loves, complete with a couple of plushies as well.

"I-I like y-your room," Dan says quietly.

"Thanks!" Phil says with a grin, walking past Dan into the room and frowning when he sees the tiny kitten curled up on his pillow.

"Winston! I've told you no sleeping on my pillow, it makes me sneeze all night!" Phil complains to the tiny grey kitten, who blinks it's blue eyes sleepily before yawning in Phil's face.

"Cat breath," Phil laughs to Dan, screwing his face up, "not the best smell."

Dan laughs lightly, walking next to Phil, who has lifted the kitten off the pillow onto his bedspread. Dan reaches out and pets the kitten gently with his long fingers, smiling as it purrs happily when Dan scratches behind it's ears.

"You can sit down," Phil says, sitting on his bed and motioning for Dan to do the same.

When Dan sits beside Phil, his legs crossed and the kitten immediately lays in his lap, looking tiny compared to Dan's long legs. Phil smiles fondly at the kitten and Dan.

"Wow he likes you already!" Phil giggles, reaching out to take a handful of buttery popcorn, "I'm jealous."

Dan laughs lightly and smiles down at the small kitten sleeping on his legs.

"H-he o-obviously d-doesn't care a-about moods," Dan says, trying at a joke.

"I don't think anyone should care about moods," Phil says, swallowing his mouthful of food, "I mean, there's no point in them anyway, no explanation to them, you're not missing out."

"C-can w-we please stop t-talking about m-moods?" Dan asks, looking down with pink cheeks.

"Of course! So, uh, you like video games?" Phil asks with a grin.

Dan picks up a handful of popcorn and smiles, looking back up at Phil.

"O-obviously! I'm t-the best a-at Mario K-Kart," Dan says.

"No way, after this, we are so racing!" Phil protests, "prepare to lose to the wrath of Phil Striker!"

Dan giggles. "I-in y-your dreams."

***

Dan is woken in the middle of the night by his phone lighting up.

Dan frowns, rolling over and wincing at how bright the screen is. After his eyes adjust, he sees many texts from Phil taking up his lock screen.

He doesn't keep his phone on do not disturb because, well, he has no one who would text him to disturb him anyway. Dan unlocks his phone and reads through Phil's texts.

phil: DANNY

phil: I can't sleeeeep

phil: are you awake?

phil: I guess not

dan: what the hell? It's one a.m.

phil: oops?

dan: why are you texting me?

phil: we're friends aren't we?

dan: I guess so...

phil: well that's what friends do.

dan: do what?

phil: THEY KEEP EACH OTHER AWAKE WHEN THE OTHER CANT SLEEP SUCKERRRRR

Dan laughs, smiling at his screen. He can't believe he has someone texting him. He's always wanted a friend, and if this is what it feels like then Dan has really been missing out. He suddenly has a reason to stay up late on his phone now.

dan: go to sleep phil

phil: I caaaannnnnttttt

dan: :/

phil: so... what's your favourite colour?

Dan smiles to himself. Maybe he doesn't need the whole world to make him feel like he belongs, maybe he just needs one person. Maybe he just needs something he was lacking all along, not a mood;

a friend.
