The Visions Arc #3

Widow drove down the highway with her radio playing quietly. She couldn't believe she forgot to pick you up. Granted, she was beyond tired and she was now wondering if she could've just called Vision to bring you back.

Though, she didn't know if you had decided on whether or not you were going to accept their offer. Still, she just hoped you were okay. But she did trust Vision.

If you were with him, you were safe.

Monster:
Year 1

You ducked under the sharp blade of the Grim Reaper and delivered a powerful kick to his ribs which broke them and sent him flying right into a tree. His limbs wrapped around it and you heard his bones break, but he just got back up.

He really was unkillable.

But this wasn't a healing factor. None of his external wounds were healing. You could still see where his skull was caved in from when Virginia "killed" him the first time.

So how could you defeat him?

Grim Reaper: YOU'RE NOT REAL!

Virginia grabbed him by the arm and swung him into the ground.

Virginia: Did that feel real?

The Grim Reaper sliced at her leg, barely missing, and kicked her away. He leaped back up just as Viv flew towards him.

Grim Reaper: Your children, your husband, none of them are real!

Viv tried to phase through the blade, but she was unsuccessful. He managed to narrowly slice through her shirt which distracted her enough for him to grab her.

He held her there and placed his blade to her neck. You and Virginia stopped.

Grim Reaper: One step closer and I'll gut her like a fish!

He held Viv tighter and placed the blade closer to her neck. You didn't know much about Synthezoid biology, but you weren't about to chance it.

Vision should be home soon.

He can help, right?

You just needed to hold the Grim Reaper back long enough for him to show up. Maybe with some Avengers.

Virginia: Let my daughter go.

Grim Reaper: No! You and your family act as if you're normal. As if you're human. It makes me sick!

Y/N: Please, you don't have to do this. They don't mean anyone harm.

Grim Reaper: That's how it starts, right? They don't mean any harm but then they get a taste for blood. There's no stopping them then.

Viv tried to phase away, but the man just pushed the blade closer to her skin.

You clenched your fists, and slowly raised your hands. Virginia looked at you.

Y/N: Please. Let her go.

You got down to your knees and slowly bowed.

Y/N: Don't hurt them.

The Grim Reaper smiled. He really was an idiot. He noticed the sparks on your fingers far to late.

Without thinking about it, you launched yourself forward. Viv and Virginia watched as you suddenly vanished from their sight, and reappeared right in front of Viv and the Grim Reaper. You grabbed his head, and you vanished again.

Viv felt the gust of wind on her body just as you reappeared a few feet away, with the Grim Reaper's face in the ground. A large crater had formed under it.

Sparks of electricity flickered around your body as you stood back up and looked at Viv.

Y/N: You alright.

Viv: Yes. Minor damage was inflicted.

That was good at least. You had no idea where this power came from, but it was pretty damn useful.

Your senses went off and you leaped back as the Grim Reaper swung at you. You landed by Viv and grabbed her as the man went to attack again. You leaped up with your flames as you held Viv in your arms.

Y/N: How do we beat this guy? He's not staying down.

Viv: He appears to have a healing factor like yours.

No. That wasn't it. He was still bleeding. His bones were still broken. There had to be something else.

You let go of Viv who flew on her own. You kept yourself in the air with your flames.

Virginia: Stay away from my children.

Grim Reaper: You should thank me. Death is the closet you will ever be to being human!

He charged at Virginia but she blasted him away with a laser from her head. The Grim Reaper stood back up and you watched as his body seemed to fix itself, but not really.

What was the secret here?
----------
Widow continued her drive when her phone suddenly began to ring. She answered it.

Widow: Hello?

Wanda: Natasha?

Widow: Wanda? Funny you should call. I'm just about to go see your ex-husband.

While Widow smirked at her joke, Wanda reacted differently.

Wanda: That's the problem. Vision was on a mission with us. He suddenly had an alert from his wife. Something is wrong.

Widow suddenly sat up a bit straighter.

Widow: What?

Wanda: His home is under attack.

Widow stepped on the gas.
-----------
Grim Reaper: Die! Die! Die!

Y/N: What's with this guy?!

Viv: I do not know. We must stop him. My mother has sent out an alert to my father. He is returning with Avengers.

At least that was some good news. But who knows when they would get here? Right now, you had to take care of the attacker.

Virginia charged at the Grim Rwaper but he sliced at her again. She managed to avoid his blade, but she failed to notice his fist. It drove right into her face and caused her to stagger long enough for him to lift his blade again.

Y/N: No!

You blasted down to the ground and caught the blade with your hand. You could feel it slice into your skin. You felt it buzz in your grasp.

Grim Reaper: Leave them to die, boy!

Y/N: No! I won't let you kill again!

The Grim Reaper contiued to push his blade down and you kept holding onto it. You swung at him, hitting him in the jaw, but he didn't let up.

You hit him again, and again, and again. You popped out your claws and stabbed them through his head, but he didn't even flinch.

Grim Reaper: The Reaper doesn't die. He doesn't weaken.

He kicked your gut, causing you to drop to the ground by his surprising strength. Was he getting stronger?

Grim Reaper: If you will not flee, then you shall die with them.

He lifted his blade and brought it down upon you. But it never made it.

Your eyes went wide when you felt something cold and wet hit your cheek. Viv landed behind you and looked at the Reaper who had suddenly stopped moving.

You looked up, and found Virginia's hand phasing through his body. His heart in her hand.

She pulled her hand back and the Grim Reaper dropped to the ground, now lifeless.

Viv: Mother?

Virginia looked at the heart and dropped it to the grass. She then looked back at the house. You slowly pushed yourself up as your body began to heal.

Virginia: It is okay now. You are safe.

She walked over to you, and held you tightly.

Virginia: It is okay now.

She let you go and hugged Viv. Your eyes suddenly landed on the Grim Reaper's body. She killed him. Again.

Viv: Mother, Father and the Avengers will be here soon. If they find out you killed the Grim Reaper....

Y/N: It was in self defense. She'll be fine, right?

Virginia said nothing. She just walked back towards the home as you stood there. She entered the house through the broken door and made her way to the living room. There, she found her son's body. She picked it up, and sat it on the couch so that it was sitting up. She then walked over to flying vase of Zenn-La where she gathered a scoop of it in her hand. She then drank it.

She sat on the couch and waited.

Outside, you and Viv looked at the body of the Grim Reaper. You looked back at the house and then at Viv.

Y/N: I'm going to go check on her.

Viv: I shall wait for my father.

You nodded and headed back towards the house.

You found Virginia sitting at the couch, staring at the blank TV.

Y/N: Virginia?

Virginia looked at you. You walked around the couch and noticed Vin's body.

Virginia: Hell0, Y/N. Please...sit sit sit sit with me.

What was wrong with her? You hesitated, but you sat beside her.

Y/N: Virginia, what's wrong? Did the Reaper get you?

Virginia: No. Please excuse me. I drank from the flying vase of Zenn-La. The corrosive effects of the liquid are are are are working through my system. This will cause some problems with my corporeal and incorporeal nerve reactors.

You looked at her as you pieced together what she was saying.

Y/N: You're dying.

Virginia: Yes.

Y/N: T-Then phase. Just phase the water out of you!

Virginia: No.

You grabbed her hand and looked at her with pleading eyes.

Y/N: Please.

She looked at Vin then at you.

Virginia: My head is heavy. May I rest on you?

She wasn't going to save herself. You saw this. You knew. So you just nodded and she laid her head on your shoulder.

Virginia: You are are are are such a kind b0y. I w0uld be pr0ud to call y0u 0ne 0f my 0wn.

You felt the tears start to form in your eyes.

Y/N: I...I think you're a great mom. I know Viv thinks so. And that Vin did too.

Virginia smiled. Viv entered the house and saw her mother laying her head on your shoulder.

Viv: Mother?

Virginia smiled at her daughter. She sat next to her and Virginia held her hand.

Virginia: Won't you tell tell tell me that j0ke again? The 0ne y0u t0ld Vivian.

Y/N: Sure.

As the three of you sat there, the Avengers finally arrived. Widow had just driven up and the police were on their way after calls from the neighbors reported a fight.

Two toasters are sitting on the counter.

One toaster looks looks the other and says, "do you sometimes feel empty inside?"

The other Toaster says, "oh my god! A talking Toaster!"

And while Virginia laughed, everyone rushed inside. You lowered your head as Virginia's eyes began to power down.

And just like that, the room got a bit darker.
---------------
Wanda: Virginia did the right thing. Or the wrong thing. Or what anyone would've done. She saved what she could. And when she was done, she was done.

You walked alongside Viv and Wanda around the park. Your hands were in your pockets as you listened to Wanda talk. It had now been a week since the Grim Reaper attacked. Since Vin and Virginia died.

Widow had taken you off duty to mourn while Viv and Vision did their best to adapt to the situation. But, it was still so fresh in your mind.

Wanda: And my hope, my darling Viv, Y/N, my hope in telling you this is so that you will see, above all else, Virginia loved you both.

Viv: But I do not understand, Wanda. Parents sacrifice their lives for their children. Their children then become parents and sacrifice their own lives. And so it is all sacrifice and and nothing is gained.

Then life becomes the pursuit of unobtainable purpose by absurd means. The world really can be cruel.

Wanda: What is it Portia says in the "Merchant of Venice"? Vin would know. "One half of me is yours, the other half yours, mine own, I would say. But if mine, then yours and so all yours".

Y/N: The hell does that mean?

Wanda: To summarize it, it means that you are your own person. Sacrifice is required in our line of work. Every single day. However, that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice everything. You are your own person. Just as Vin was. Just as Virginia was.

Being a hero requires sacrifice. You knew that. But you never thought it would be like this.

Y/N: If I had done something...

Wanda: And I will stop you right there, child. You have to realize that you can't save every single being in the world. But you can save as many as you can.

Viv and you looked at each other. Wanda stopped walking and turned to the two of you.

Wanda: Viv, I heard that stubbornly handsome father of yours is moving into the Avengers' Compound.

Viv: Indeed.

Wanda: And you?

Viv looked at you.

Viv: I was offered a place in the Avengers Program. If I accept, I will live in the Program's tower.

Wanda: And will you?

Viv turned back to Wanda.

Viv: Yes. I wish to save others.

You smiled a bit.

If you couldn't save everyone like Wanda said, then you were going to save as many as you could.
------------
Widow: Everyone, please welcome our two newest members. Danny Rend aka the Iron Fist, and Viv Vision.

The two new recruits stood before you and the others in the tower. You were glad that Danny and Viv had agreed to join the Program. At least you weren't the new guy anymore.

Kamala: We get our own Vision?! That's so cool!

Sam: Another guy? Damnit. Now I gotta work out again.

Viv looked at you and you just smiled. After a quick meeting, very one headed out save for you, Widow, and Viv. Since she was living here now, you wouldn't be so alone in the tower.

While that was nice, you couldn't help but feel like you had failed her in a way. You were determined to make sure it didn't happen again.

Widow: Hey, kid.

You looked up from the couch and found Widow standing there. Viv had gone to her room for the night while you decided to sit there and think.

Widow: You doing alright?

You shrugged as you stood up.

Y/N: As well as I can be. I'm not the one who lost a brother and a mother.

Widow rubbed her arm.

Widow: I know. But if Viv is like Vision, she'll be just fine.

She sighed.

Widow: Look, I'm sorry the whole adoption thing fell through.

You just waved it off as you headed towards your room.

Y/N: It's fine. I made it this long without a family, right?

Widow watched as you walked away. While you said what you did with a smile, she heard the quiver in your voice.

Widow: Kid...
-----------
It was late when you found yourself laying on your bed. You were wide awake. You couldn't stop thinking.

You had another power. Yet another thing you didn't know about.

AI: Visitor requesting permission to enter.

You sat up at the voice confused. That was new.

Y/N: Uh, accept?

Your door suddenly opened and you found Viv standing there. She walked in and the door closed behind her. You had a lamp on your desk that gave the room some light. The rest came from the window.

Y/N: Hey.

Viv: Hello. I am sorry for bothering you so late.

You just waved it off.

Y/N: Something on your mind?

Viv shook her head.

Viv: I am not yet used to sleeping alone in a room.

Oh. You rubbed the back of your neck and looked at the time. It was late.

Viv: Could I stay here with you? Just for the night?

You looked at her and saw that she dressed for sleep. You then looked at your bed and stood up.

Y/N: Go ahead.

Viv smiled and walked over to the bed. She laid down and you rubbed your chin. You went to grab some blankets but you found yourself stopping when Viv grabbed the bottom of your shirt.

Viv: Please, do not leave.

Y/N: Viv...

Viv: Please.

You looked at her before you gave in. You laid down on the bed and created some space between the two of you before you pulled the blankets over you.

Viv: Thank you.

You just nodded.

Viv: Y/N?

You turned your head to look at her. Your eyes grew wide when you saw the tears in her eyes.

Viv: Could you...show me how to be human?

You laid there for a moment. You then turned your body so that you were facing her. You hugged her as she cried for the first time since that night.

Y/N: We can learn together. I promise.

As she cried, you held her. Come morning, she would be an official member of the Program. But right now, she was just a girl who had lost her mother and brother.

???: Damn....ssssap......
