Away From Home

It was cold. It was too be expected in such weather in such a place. Especially at night. Canada was an odd place to be in. Especially after spending so much time in cities and such.

You let out a breath as you pulled your jacket tighter around your body. You wished you could use your flames again. Maybe just a small spark. Anything, really. But you knew they were still unstable. For now, at least.

But for now, this magic would have to do.

You looked over your shoulder behind you where you could see the old truck that your Godfather had given you. The lantern that you had bought a few towns back provided enough light for you to see your sleeping companion.

Wanda Maximoff. The Scarlet Witch.

But not the original one. This was a magical copy of the older woman. The one who joined you on this journey.

You turned back to looking forward. At the edge of the cliff, you stood. A faint fame in your hand that came from an unspoken spell. The runes written on your fingers glowed slightly as the flame burned.

The jacket you wore around your body was warm enough. At least with the flame.

Before you was a view that would make most people swoon. The full moon hung in the sky as the valley below stayed lit by it's light. A distant howling echoed in your ears as your eyes stayed fixed on the night sky.

???: You need to sleep, darling.

You turned around and found Wanda standing there with her arms crossed, an attempt to stay warm. You walked over to her and lifted the flame up to help her.

Y/N: You shouldn't be out here. It's cold.

Wanda: I could say the same to you. What are you doing out here?

You clicked your tounge before you scratched your chin.

Y/N: Couldn't sleep.

Wanda nodded and slowly reached out for your free hand. She began to pull you along as she walked towards the truck.

Wanda: You know you can talk to me.

Y/N: Of course.

You both reached the truck and Wanda climbed back into the back. You stood there for a moment before you followed her. You closed the tailgate behind you and moved back before your back was against the window.

The entire bed of the truck was covered in heavy blankets for when you and Wanda rested for the night. You rested an arm on your knee as Wanda laid beside you.

Wanda: Sleep. We still have a long way to go.

She was right. It had been nearly a month since you left New York. Trying to find Burns, Alaska was harder said than done. And Canada was an adventure all on it's own.

Y/N: I will.

Wanda: Do you need help?

You shook your head and finally climbed under the blankets. You laid on your back and looked at Wanda as she laid beside you.

Wanda: I can see the hurt in your eyes. You're still bothered by what happened back in New York.

Y/N: I am. But I'm doing better.

Wanda: Are you?

You thought back on Venom. On the people you had lost. Your mom. Felicia.

Y/N: No. But I'm trying.

Wanda placed a hand on your chest and offered a smile. You forced one yourself, and rolled over. You needed to catch some sleep.
-------------
Wanda: I wanna dance with somebody~ I wanna feel the heat of somebody~

Wanda sang along to the music off the Bluetooth that was connected to her phone. You kept your eyes on the road as you drove past the trees and hills. You were now in Alaksa so that was good news at least.

Still, you had no idea where Burns was. It wasn't on a map anywhere and Wanda couldn't find anything when she would meditate. Yet, it was a real place. Moony confirmed it. He had been there.

You let out a yawn after driving for a few hours. Wanda had offered to drive a while back, but you turned down the offer.

Wanda: Do you think you'll ever get rid of those?

She brushed her fingers against yours. Over the markings that you had carved into them back when you were kidnapped by the Ten Rings.

Y/N: Maybe one day when I get my powers back. But not any time soon.

Wanda: I don't think you should. I like the way they look.

You smirked a bit and looked at her for a split second. And that's all it took.

Suddenly, something ran across the road. It was large and hairy. It didn't look like a man, but it was larger than any animal you had ever seen. Fur as white as snow.

You quickly grabbed the wheel and jerked it to the left as you also hit the brakes. Wanda was quick to create a spell that stopped the car from swerving off the side of the road.

Whatever ran across the road dissapered in the treeline. You slowly lifted your head before you looked over to Wanda.

Y/N: You alright?

Wanda: Yes. Are you?

You nodded before you got out of the truck. You walked over to the middle of the road and looked around at the treeline. Whatever ran across the road was long gone. Wanda got out of the car and walked over to you, but stopped.

Wanda: Y/N?

You turned to her and saw that she was pointing at something. You looked at it and found a sign.

Welcome to Burns, Alaska
----------------
The town was the size of a postage stamp. Quite small for a place with such a decent population size. Your truck didn't even stand out all that much.

Wanda: This is quite odd.

Y/N: Yeah. We barely past the border a few hours ago, right?

Wanda nodded.

The reason why things were odd was the fact that you were now by the ocean. The harbor had some fishing ships and dock hands hanging around.

You were hours away from the ocean just a moment ago. And on top of that, at least judging by the map you were looking at, you wouldn't have even ended up in this area for at least another day.

Yet you were here. And odder still, it felt like you had been here before.

But it was also completely unfamiliar.

You parked the truck and turned to Wanda.

Y/N: We should get something to eat. I have a feeling it's going to be a while before we find my old man.

Wanda gleefully agreed and you both got out. You placed your hands in your pockets while Wanda wrapped her arms around your right one. You both walked down the street as the cold hit you.

Walking along the street, you noticed how everyone seemed to be busy doing something. But, unlike New York, they were still being friendly to each other.

You stopped walking suddenly when you noticed an officer questioning a man on the docks. Three more were looking at a boat that was tied down.

Wanda: I wonder what that's about.

Y/N: Me too. We can check it out later, though. Food comes first.

Wanda smiled at you as you ducked into the restaurant. It wasn't anything spectacular, just a simple diner, but the food smelled delicious.

Waitress: Sit wherever, love. I'll be right with you.

You gave her a nod and found a booth. You and Wanda sat across from each other and the waitress walked over with two menus.

Waitress: So, what can I get for ya?

Wanda: I'll take a coffee to start.

Waitress: Alright. Would you like for me to bring out some creamers for that, sweetie?

Wanda: Yes, please.

Waitress: Will do. Love the accent, by the way. And for you?

Y/N: The same.

The Waitress nodded and left to get your drinks. Wanda took off her gloves and looked at your hands. When you weren't driving, she was teaching you how to use them better. Since your powers were still unstable and might destroy your body, you had to rely on them even more than before.

Though, you did find out that your claws remained. Your healing factor too, though it was slower.

Wanda: It's very quiet around here.

You nodded. It was almost weird not to hear any horns or yelling. Well, there was yelling but nice yelling.

Y/N: I'll send an update to everyone in a bit. After we're done eating.

You had joined a website Nadia and Viv had created. The Fourms. A place for all young heroes to talk about....well, anything. You've only used it so far to post updates here and there. But that was about it.

Waitress: Hey you go. Two coffees.

She set the drinks down in front of you then she set down a small metal container which had small cups of creamer in it.

Waitress: Do you two know what you want?
--------------------
As you finished your food, you sighed.

Y/N: That was delicious.

Wanda: Indeed.

Waitress: You two need me to take those plates?

Y/N: Yes, please.

The Waitress took the plates and stacked them ontop of each other. She stopped and looked at you.

Waitress: I'm sorry, but I've been trying to figure this out since you two walked in here. Do I know you?

You and Wanda looked at each other and you shook your head.

Y/N: I wouldn't think so. Uh, we just got here. This morning.

Waitress: Alone? You both seem so young.

Y/N: Actually, uh, we're here to...visit...my father.

The Waitress smiled.

Waitress: Really, now? Who's your dad? I know everyone in this town.

Y/N: His name is Victor. Victor Creed.

The waitress' smile suddenly vanished as she looked at you. She stared at you for a moment, then her smile suddenly returned.

Waitress: Victor! Oh. I never knew he had a son. Well, I'll just leave the check here for ya. Take your time, no rush. Nice tattoo, by the way. I love the color.

She set down the check and left. You looked at Wanda confused. You also touched the strange mark on your neck that had been there since Carnage sunk his claws into your neck.

Y/N: That was...weird.

Wanda: I agree. But, she didn't feel any bitterness towards the name. Or anger. She felt more.....confused.

You reached into your pocket and pulled out your wallet. Before you left, Moony had given you a credit card with a direct link to his bank account.

You got up to pay, but stopped when someone entered the restaurant.

Y/N: Hey, isn't that the guy the cops were questioning?

Wanda looked over and spotted the man.

Wanda: It is. You wanna go talk to him.

You nodded. Wanda took the check and went pay it herself. You then followed the man to the counter where he sat down.

Sailor: I'll take the usual.

The Waitress nodded and you sat down next to the man. You tapped your fingers for a moment before you turned to him.

Y/N: Hey. Um, my name is Y/N. I just got here and....

The man looked at you for a moment.

Sailor: Jerry. You look a bit young, kid.

Y/N: Yeah. 16. Um, my dad is Victor Creed.

Jerry: Oh. Yeah, I know that guy. Talk about a different kind of beast.

You nodded. So people knew your dad. Good. You turned to ask the man some more questions, but he sighed.

Jerry: I don't want to be rude, kid. But I had a rough morning already.

You looked over your shoulder to see that the cops were taping off the docks where the ship was.

Y/N: Yeah, uh, what happened?

Jerry looked at the boat and sighed.

Jerry: The Glorious Lynda became a God damn slaughterhouse.

You raised a brow.

Y/N: Wait, did someone die?

Jerry shook his head.

Jerry: The whole crew.

He turned to you as the waitress set his cup of coffee down.

Jerry: Look, kid. There's a thousand ways to die in Alaska. Drown. Frozen. Get hoofed by a moose. Fall down a mine shaft.

Y/N: How often does the moose one happen?

Jerry: Eat the wrong berries. Flip your four wheeler. Get lost and starved.

Y/N: Okay. Now, about the moose thing?

Jerry: Then....then there's people. Murder, you can add that on the list. Murder's why we're talking now.

You looked back at the boat. So, the crew was murdered?

Y/N: Let's just start at the beginning.

Jerry: Fine, fine. Though I am getting tired of telling it.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a flask. He poured some of the liquor into his coffee then held it out to you.

Jerry: Want a nip?

You looked at the flask then at him.

Y/N: I'm good.

Jerry shrugged and placed the flask back into his pocket.

Jerry: When I get down to the docks this morning, fog's already rolled in. Thick, soupy fog. Crab's the big game, come fall or winter. And crabbing ain't what you call safe work. You're 90 times more likely to die then anybody pushing papers. And now the fog's upped our chances.

He took a drink of his coffee as Wanda finally joined you.

Jerry: But I can make five Jully's worth of pay in one October. So we shove off around 4 AM. And I'm motoring slow. Then, me and my crew reached our crabbing spot. That's when I found that crew's ship over there.

He shrugged.

Jerry: At first I'm pissed. Thought those bastards were taking my crab traps. It was one of them damn Langrock boats. We tried to radio them, but no one answered. That's when I noticed, I ain't see no one on the boat. So we sailed up to it, and boarded it.

Y/N: Where did you find them?

Jerry: The hold. All of them, eyes wide open. Faces split clean. Red lines raked across it. Like, I dunno, like some kind of animal just went to town on 'em. It was horrible. But under the bodies, there was something else. Packages.

Y/N: Packages?

Jerry: Yup. Like plastic bundles. Drugs, I reckon.

You and Wanda looked at each other.

Jerry: But, if you ask me, I think this is connected to those other deaths.

Wanda: Other deaths? What other deaths?

Jerry: Cops been saying it's a grizzly. People might have believed it the first time, but not by the second. A bear don't do that to a person.

You were about to ask another question, but the radio suddenly began to change stations. You looked at it and found that no one was there.

Waitress: Damn cult.

Y/N: Cult?

Waitress: They call themselves, the Aurora. You know, like the northern lights? Bout five months ago, they bought some old warehouse outside of town. And every now and then they send out these crazy broadcasts.

Then, suddenly, the radio stopped. And everything was silent.

???: The night is coming. The Long Night. Moonless and endless and full of possibility, like a vast chalkboard waiting for you, friends and brethren. To put your mark on it.

Y/N: The Long Night?

Wanda: I've never heard of that before.

???: And we, the Aurora, are here, in Alaska, because this is where the Long Night takes root and grows. This is where darkness has its greatest grip. And we must feed it, or it will consume us. We beseech you to join us. Your lives depend on it.

You looked at the radio as the deep voice seemed to speak to you.

???: The Long Night is coming. And there is no way to stop it.
