Chapter 24
The sound of metal being unclasped brought a smile to my face.
I slowly rubbed my wrists to make them feel better. The cuffs weakened my strength so getting them off made me feel slightly woozy, but Trent was there to hold me up. And I gulped down the glass of blood that he gave me so fast that he was heading back upstairs to get another one, but I pulled him back to me and stared intensely at his neck and then back up at him.
"Please?"
He nodded his head, my fangs extended, and they were in his neck before he could change his mind. This time I made sure I didn't take too much blood, just enough to make that amazing noise come from his lips.
When I pulled back he stared at me with amusement as I licked the rest of the blood off my lips slowly. When he was leaning in I thought he would lick it like those cheesy movies, but instead he moved the pad of his thumb to remove it and reached for my wrist to give a small kiss on my mark, making my body act in strange ways.
We walked up the stairs hand in hand.
A crowd of maids and workers were surrounding the area clapping with smiles. It's like they forgot all about me trying to kill the prince. Or they just didn't want to remember, I sure didn't.
My thoughts wandered back to Jen, I still had to ask Trent some questions.
"Trent, I have to—"
He covered my mouth with his hand. "Hold that thought for a second, I know that we have a lot of catching up to do, but I want to show you something."
The group of people expanded to go back to their jobs as Trent and I ran up the stairs and into his office. His whole desk was cleared except for one paper with a pen placed next to it.
I walked up to it and read the title: "Blood Bank," after that was a bunch of information about the changes being made to make it safer, and at the bottom a black line.
"And this," Trent pointed to the line. "Is where I sign to make it a legal document." He took the pen and in delicate cursive wrote out his name. Then turned to me as if waiting for my approval. I couldn't help but smile at him. Why couldn't Jen see that he was changing for the better?
"Chloe, what's wrong? Are you okay? Do you not like it?"
"I love it," I said, reassuring him. "It's not that I'm thinking about."
"Than what are you thinking about?"
The pen was placed back next to the paper, and his full attention was on me.
It was now or never. "Do you remember when we were down in the basement you said it wouldn't be the first time that Jen tried to hurt someone else close to you. Who was the first person?"
He got taken aback from my question, his eyes adverted from mine. "No one that you would have known."
"That doesn't matter; I still want to hear the story." I hesitantly reached her his hand, but he pulled away. He must have seen my saddened reaction, that he slid his hand into mine.
He sighed and looked me up and down. "First take a shower, I'm sure that you want to freshen up now, and put on a new pair of clothes." He was stalling, but when I looked down at my outfit, the one that I showed up in, I decided a shower was a great idea.
"You promise you will tell me when I get back."
"I promise."
I almost forgot. "And—"
He already knew what I was going to ask. "The shower is two doors down."
I gave a small smile to him, it's so easy how I forget and get lost in this place. I exited the office and followed his instructions to the door, and instantly when walking in Trent's smell of spearmint hit me; this was his room. I didn't think too much of it as I took my shower and exited finding undergarments, a sweatshirt and a pair of half leggings. The maid must have laid them out for me. Quickly putting them on, I headed back to the office.
Trent was still there as he promised, sitting on a small couch pushed to the side of the room.
"So, will you explain?"
He didn't say anything, instead he just gestured to the small space next to him, and once I sat down he started to talk.
"Jen was part of a group that wanted to take down the vampire kingdom. She would go around places and talk to random people about her plans until one day she decided to put her plan into motion." He stopped talking and wrapped his arm around my body pulling me closer. "Do you remember that part of the story about Kally and I turning people into vampires to build this place?"
"Yes..." Where was this story going.
"Over the centuries there was one lady, Quinn, which we just couldn't turn. There was something about the motherly atmosphere around her that we just craved, and she was only 25 when we met her. She was living in a house close by and recently got kicked out for not paying the bills, so we decided to give her a job."
"That was nice of you," I commented.
He nodded his head, brushing his fingers through my hair. He was just getting into the story, and I was just waiting to hear more about him.
"We gave her a job to work in the castle as a maid. She was perfect for the job, she would discipline us like we were her own and throw a small get together of workers when we did something right. We asked her once if she wanted to be a vampire, but she declined. Kally and I had a bunch of debates over that. We both loved Quinn and wanted her to be with us forever, but we had to deal with the fact that she would eventually not be with us anymore, but that time came sooner than we both thought.
When Quinn went out to town to buy some things, she never came back. It took some time for us to decide to send someone or not, because Quinn was so independent and never liked to ask for help, only if someone asked first. So we were thinking she couldn't find something on her list of items, but just couldn't find it. We sent guards to look for her after thinking for so long. We should have sent them sooner."
I felt his hand stop moving through my hair and his eyes tightly closed, I reached my hand to touch his face, but he moved his head away from me. His words came out slow and bitter at the end, "They found her body dead with a warning letter for us to watch our backs, that the prince would reach his end. After we had the funeral for Quinn we got trackers to sniff some of the blood from Quinn's old clothes, leading us directly to the murderer; Jen."
I didn't want to have that imagery of Jen, so I slightly changed the direction the story was going. "So if Jen killed Quinn. Why did you let her live?" It was like leaving a burglar in your house. They stole once, and you don't turn them into the cops. So they think they can steal again.
"I'm getting there. I promise." He didn't look at all in my direction, but somehow scooped his hands underneath me to plop myself onto his lap and continue to pet my hair.
"We found Jen and brought her into the dungeons, we knew she was the leader of the group of Rebels, so we asked her where they were hiding, but she would never budge. We used a lot of physical force on her, yet nothing. Eventually she escaped. The cell door was wide open, and a guard was found on the ground.
"We tracked her down after that and realized she kept going to some house. We went to the strange house and captured the two adults, and Jen walked right into the trap. And we dragged her right back to the castle, with her family."
Trent still didn't know about Jen's sister.
"When she came back we gave the prison some upgrades. We built sturdy walls, instead of metal poles; A light bulb instead of a window, and a padlock instead of keys. This time we only threw her parents in the cell, we couldn't afford to let Jen escape again, even though we thought the prison was indestructible we knew she could find a way out. So we made her work for us, becoming the new maid."
"Well your plan didn't go well, since she did escape," I mumbled.
He heard me.
"It's not my fault you had to come along and distract me so much. You distracted me just enough to let Jen out of my sight. I never even knew how she hid so well, until I started thinking. She had to get help from someone, so it had to be you. When Finn and I jumped through that window I was so disappointed that I saw you with her. I kept asking why you would do that, then realized she manipulated you. You decided to help with her cause, and she turned you against me. So when she was presumed dead I was thrilled...at first."
"But knowing what she could do as a human to get away from her beloved scared me, because you were human too, and you could do the same thing. I didn't know how bad Jen manipulated you, and thought you would follow in her footsteps; you would leave me in the blink of an eye, just like Quinn. So I didn't ask your permission to be turned or not. I was scared you would say no, and then not wake up the next day. I couldn't take that chance, but instead of you not waking up the next day after I turned you, I walked into the room and you were gone. My worst fears had come true."
His words started to sink in, he still didn't know I know where Jen was. I was still hiding secrets from him, and the thought of him turning me into a vampire without asking just because of Jen made my blood boil.
I pushed myself away from him and brought my feet back to the floor.
But he wouldn't have turned me this way if it weren't for Jen killing Quinn, or her fake death, then he wouldn't have felt the need to protect me from...death?
The pounding built in my head.
There is no way to prevent death. Not even turning me into a vampire could kill me. It just prevents me from getting old, but being older isn't associated with death. Any age can die at any time, even vampires.
It was Jen's fault I was like this.
Jen said I was the only one that could build trust with just to stab him in the back later. Jen said I was the only one she ever told about her life. Jen said I was the only one that could bring an end to vampires. Jen said—oh my gosh.
"Please sit down Chloe; you are starting to look sick." Trent's voice only soothed me a little bit.
I gave him a blank stare. I didn't know if I wanted to scream or yell at this moment. Everything Jen had ever said to me was echoing in my head, the first day I was at the castle she was disgusted by me thinking I was a vampire, but instantly when I said I was human she became friendly. Was that all part of her plan too? She was using me.
Jen built trust with me, I thought she cared for me, she built up the idea of killing the prince being the only way to get rid of the horrible deaths by a vampire, but there was other ways to prevent that. There is so many more ways than that. She was like a replica of Greg; at first seeming kind and gentle, but as you continue to be near them there true colors shine through, and they aren't all bright. This version of Greg was scarier though. This Greg was giving me to the vampires and leaving.
This Greg was trying to kill me.
Thank you so much Dontkissme for the banner on the side!! I love it!
This is a long (I think) Filler chapter. And if you read it all I give you a huge round of applause!
This chapter has so much information in it that it drags, but the next chapter is the huge turning point for the story. So any predictions on what will happen?
By the way I'm going on vacation for two weeks and won't have my laptop. So I will try to update when I get back! Thank you so much for supporting this story.
