Practical Magic

The moon hung high in the sky, shining down upon the building where disobedient monsters were kept until they could be reformed and allowed back into society. Delinquents and troublemakers for the sake of trouble. In one of the rooms we find a young werewolf laying by herself, her eyes closed and her heads resting behind her head. She wasn't asleep, however. She was actually wide awake. She could hardly sleep, after all. The excitement was just too much.

She opened her eyes and smiled.

She had been in here for nearly a year now. It had been rough at first. Putting so many troubled monsters together was a recipe for disaster and what a disaster it was. Fights were common as were throwing out insults and bullying and overall nastiness, but she had learned the system by the first month. She had been on her best behavior, worked the system, got all the brownie points. And now she was cleared to finally go home.

And she had a goal in doing so. She missed her family, sure. They annoyed her to no end, but they were her pack. And that was why she was ready to tear apart the one responsible for making their lives harder. The one who ruined everything while she was in here.

She couldn't believe her eyes or ears when it happened. No one could. In the blink of an eye everything changed.

She began to grin when she thought about finding the person responsible for making that stupid documentary. The Ghoul Next Door.

Y/N Van Helsing.

???: Your days are numbered, normie.

You yawned as you drove with Clawdeen, Clawd, and Draculaura. It was way too early for you to be awake and you had barely had time to even comb your hair.

Clawd: Dude, you really need to stop staying up so late.

Y/N: You really need to mind your own business.

You rubbed your neck as you reached the address that Clawdeen gave you. You were a bit confused on why they asked you to go along with them, but you were also supposed to be the one welcoming new Monsters as a member of the Welcome Committee. And you did have a car.

Draculaura: I haven't seen Howleen in almost a year. I beat she's taller now.

Y/N: Yeah, so who is she exactly?

You all left the car and started towards the building.

Clawdeen: She's our little sister. She was sent here after she kept getting into fights back at Monster High.

Y/N: Well, at least she can make for a good roommate for Twyla. Hopefully.

Clawd: Someone like Twyla could help chill her out.

You hoped so. You really didn't need a monster causing problems when you have a bunch of other stuff to do. Between your personal issues, getting more monsters to the school, and Hellscream being Hellscream, you didn't have the time to deal with any more troublemakers.

But Clawdeen and Clawd were your friends. And if Howleen is their sister, you would respect her as such.

You entered the main lobby of the building and you immediately noticed the seemingly blandness of the place. It looked different than Monster High which seemed to have more life poured into it. But what really caught your eye was the young Ghoul who was talking to the teacher.

Clawdeen: Howleen!

The girl, Howleen turned around and spotted her siblings. She immediately ran over and reunited with her brother and sister while you and Draculaura watched.

Draculaura: She really did grow up a bit.

You wouldn't know. It didn't take long before the two walked her over to introduce her to you.

Draculaura: Howleen, you look so cute! I love that outfit.

Howleen: Really? I made it myself.

The two began to talk about the designs while you hung back. She seemed lively. Was she really that much a problem that she needed to be sent here?

Howleen: Who's that?

You suddenly realized she was looking at you. You smiled and looked at the smaller girl.

Clawd: This is our friend, and member of the Welcome Committee. He drove us here.

You held out your hand.

Y/N: Nice to meet you. My name is Y/N.

However, you did not get a handshake. Rather, you got a glare and a low growl.

Howleen: As in, Y/N Van Helsing?

You blinked as you slowly pulled your hand away. You didn't look anything like she thought. Weren't you supposed to be a normie?

The hostility was clear and even Draculaura seemed a bit nervous.

Howleen: Whatever. Thanks for picking me up, I guess.

She turned back to her siblings and Draculaura, leaving you completely forgotten. That was weird. Maybe she was like that with everyone she met? But when you looked to Clawdeen, you saw that she was confused too. What was that all about?
---------
Y/N: This is where your dorm will be. You'll be sharing it with another new student, Twyla.

Howleen didn't respond, just a simple gruff noise. You sighed as you continued showing her around the school with Clawdeen. Clawd had to return to practice and Draculaura was called to the Headmistress' office to discuss an upcoming dance or something.

Clawdeen: You should be thankful. Y/N is a busy guy and he's helping you out.

You waved it off.

Y/N: This is my job too. And, it's not like we really know each other anyway. Let her go at her own pace.

Howleen was suddenly in your face, baring her fangs with a growl.

Howleen: You tellin' my sister what to do, normie?

You narrowed your eyes. Who the hell did this girl think she is? Before you had a chance to say anything, Clawdeen pulled her away and started to scold her.

Clawdeen: Hey, cut it with the attitude. Y/N is my friend, so be nice.

You just gave a "tsk" before slipping your hands on your pocket and turning the opposite way.

Y/N: You know what, you finish the tour. I just remembered I have to talk to Drac about something.

You didn't, but you definitely didn't want to stay around for some brat to keep disrespecting you. When you were out of earshot, Clawdeen turned to her sister with her hands on her hips.

Clawdeen: What are you doing?

Howleen crossed her arms and looked away, clearly not about to admit to being rude. Clawdeen narrowed her gaze.

Clawdeen: I don't know what vendetta you have against Helsing, but he's a good guy.

Howleen: A good guy doesn't out an entire community for some stupid student film.

Clawdeen raised a brow. Was that what this was about? That was months ago and it wasn't even your fault.

Clawdeen: He made the video, sure, but he wasn't the one who outted us. He's actually the one who got us all to come back out of hiding.

Howleen looked up.

Clawdeen: He's also the one leading the Normie Monster program. And newsflash, he ain't a normie. He's not a monster either, but that's besides the point. He's protected us none stop and even died for us. So you should show him some decency, otherwise we wouldn't even be here.

Clawdeen turned and headed off to her own dorm, deciding on giving up on the tour. Howleen was left standing there a bit surpised. She had heard such about how evil the Van Helsings were and how their monster hunting ways were, but someone like that wouldn't be doing all of what you were.

And she trusted Clawdeen. She had no reason to lie about it. Howleen looked back to the way you left and sighed.

Howleen: Geez.
-----------
Deuce: She sounds like a piece of work.

You and Deuce were back in your dorms playing video games. You were telling him about Clawdeen's little brat of a sister after successfully avoiding her all day. You even skipped out on lunch since she was eating with the others. You didn't really care. You had other things to do.

Y/N: I have no idea why she doesn't like me either. She called me a normie.

Deuce: Ouch.

Y/N: The rest of her family is so cool. What happened with her?

Deuce: Little sibling syndrome, man. When you feel like you're living in someone's shadow you tend to act out.

You rolled your eyes.

Y/N: That's such crap. If you think you're living in someone's shadow, then do something else! I shouldn't have to deal with it just cause she can't use her words like an adult.

Deuce: Isn't she 14?

Y/N: SHE'S OLDER THAN 10 AND THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH!

Your character died and you threw your controller down. Deuce groaned as he watched you get up and head to the mini-fridge where you grabbed a soda.

Y/N: I thought I was done with people giving me crap. Especially now. How can I make a place where monsters and humans can co exist when the monsters in question don't even like me?

Deuce shrugged.

Deuce: I dunno, bro. There's always bound to be outliers.

He was right. You couldn't just expect everyone to suddenly be on board with stuff so easily. It wasn't fair.

Suddenly, there was a knock at your door. Since you were already up, you decided to answer it, only to find Howleen standing there. She had her hands in her jacket pocket and was avoiding eye contact with you.

Y/N: What do you want, Howleen?

Howleen couldn't blame you for your hostility.

Howleen: I wanted to talk to you. And....I wanted to....apologize.

You tilted your head she sighed.

Howleen: The way I treated you this morning wasn't cool. But the reason I was like that was cause I had heard that you were the one who outted everyone. I talked to the others and they filled me in on what happened. So, yeah. Sorry.

Oh. That actually sounded sincere.

Howleen: If you really are keeping everyone safe, than we're straight. But, I don't take kindly to people who try and hurt my family, you get it?

You shrugged.

Y/N: Yeah, I get it. I feel the same way about my friends, so I get where you're coming from.

You smiled and held out a hand.

Y/N: Then, let's start over. My name is Y/N Van Helsing.

Howleen looked at your hand then to you. You seemed really forgiving. And....really nice. Kinda cute too.

Howleen shook your head.

Howleen: I'm Howleen. I guess I'll be sticking around here for a while.

Y/N: Well, it's great to have you. Welcome to Monster High.
