Emilia

Suspicious would be the word to describe how I'm feeling right now. I mean, we all think that there is something wrong with the Lockwood's, well since what John did with the device. Tyler and the mayor were both affected by the device, but the mayor wasn't affected by the vervain.

Mason is also suspected of being a werewolf since he overpowered me and the others in the wrestling match. They both gotta be werewolves, cause if they're not then they have to be something else. And I can't imagine what they could be other than werewolves.

Isobel, my unfortunately biological mother, has done research on Mystic Falls. She did research in every single family, including the Lockwood's. So, we asked Alaric if he knew where Isobel's research is since Isobel herself is missing.

Alaric told us that all her research is at Duke University, her office is still technically there so that meant we have access to it. Duke University is a bit far from Mystic Falls so that was like a trip to never land. So, I packed a backpack with all the sings I needed. Like my phone, water, flashlight, snacks, notebook, pencil, wolfsbane, and vervain.

Protection comes first.

The door of my room clicked open and in walked Elena, smiling slightly at me. "You ready?" Elena asked, tilting her head at me.

"Ready for what?" I scoffed, "Digging through my birth mother's life work or going to Duke with Damon?"

"That is exactly what Elena said when I asked her the same thing." Stefan chuckled, stepping inside my room. "Twins think alike." Elena and I said at the same time, and we ended up in a fit of giggles.

"Why aren't you coming?" I ask, looking at Stefan. "Someone has to make sure Caroline is less in danger." He answered.

"Well, since you're not there then it's my job to make sure he doesn't land a finger on Elena." I say, smirking to myself. "I think it's the other way around, Mia." Elena mused, chuckling. "What?" I ask, furrowing my eyes.

"You were practically on top of Damon last night, I mean he gave you a piggy back ride and you guys ate gelato." Elena replied, laughing. I smacked my face, "No, I did not do that. He killed Jeremy, and he's a killing bastard. There is no way I did that."

"Oh, but you did."

A car honk stopped me from going insane at what I did last night. I do remember what I did but I thought it was just a dream.

"C'mon, that must be Damon." Elena says, pulling me out the room by my arm. I followed her down the stairs as I gripped my backpack on my left shoulder. "Hey, are you okay?" Elena asks Jenna once we were down stairs. "Yeah, just men and their baggage." Jenna answers causing me to chuckle.

"See ya." I tell her, smiling before walking out the front door. Elena and Stefan follow me as I step sown from the porch and walk to a smirking Damon who's leaned against his car. "Sorry you can't come too, Stef." Damon chuckles, looking at Stefan in fake sadness.

"Call me if you need anything." Stefan says, looking at Elena and I. "Oh, I'll take really good care of them." Damon says and I scoff, swatting his arm. Elena grabs Stefan and pulls him into a deep kiss and I scoff, stepping inside the backseat. "Okay, time to go." Damon cuts them off, earning a proud smile from Elena.

Damon steps in the passenger seat and Elena slides beside me as Stefan waves at us, "Goodbye." Elena waves at him before Alaric drives out of the driveway and onto the road.

The whole ride was silent and I was eating a bag of chips as I scrolled through my phone. Instagram got boring so I locked my phone and gazed at the sign out on the road, 600 miles left. I groaned, "At least turn the radio on, the silence is killing me."

"Let's have a conversation." At his voice, Elena and I both rolled our eyes. Damon chuckled, "You know, this whole pretending to hate me thing is getting a little silly." I glared at him through the rear view mirror but kept silent.

"I don't think they're pretending. You did kill their brother." Alaric points out, looking sideways at Damon. "There is a huge asterisk next to that statement, he came back to life." Damon says, scoffing.

I scoff, "Yeah, thanks to the ring you didn't know he was wearing."

"Why are you so sure I didn't know?" Damon asks, looking me in the eye through the rear view mirror. "Did you?" Elena asks, raising a questioning brow. "Yes." Damon answers, shifting his gaze to Elena before his gaze fell on my face. "You're lying." I say, snorting.

"Emilia, I saw the ring! It's a big tacky thing. Hard to miss." Damon defended, scoffing. "Alaric, turn on the radio before I tackle him down." I say, grunting. "You wouldn't." Damon says, snorting. "Watch me." I say, growling as I narrowed my fierce blue eyes at him.

Damon pursed his lips and I turned my eyes back to my original brown ones, and Alaric finally turned on the radio. I sighed in relief and leaned my head on the window as we passed trees. The trees zoomed past us as the car sped past them, making a beautiful flash.

Half an hour later, the car skids to a halt and we parked in front of Duke's University. Alaric turned off the radio and the four of us stepped out of the car, admiring the huge building right in front of our eyes. My face was in such awe as we followed Alaric inside. I squealed slightly and walked to the amazing trophies and paintings that were on the walls.

I admired each and every one of them, and I hear Damon chuckling behind me. "So, Isobel was officially employed by the anthropology department given that most paranormal phenomenon is rooted in folklore." Alaric spoke as Elena and I scanned our eyes around.

Alaric stops and I notice that we're at an office, "Excuse me, hi. I'm Alaric Saltzman, I called earlier." Alaric greets the young woman that turned around with a grin. "Yes, of course. I'm Vanessa Monroe, research assistant, comparative folklore." She informs, shaking Alaric's hand.

Vanessa turns to the rest of us and stares weirdly at the three of us. I clear my throat to bring her out of her little trance and her face instantly turns into a grin. "Uh, let me just grab Isobel's keys." She chirps, getting the keys.

"These are my friends Emilia, Elena, and Damon. I hope this isn't too much of an imposition." Alaric introduces. "Oh please, Isobel's office is right through there. Isobel was one of my first professors, I'm a grad student. She was brilliant, and one of the reasons I went into folklore. Uh, I have to ask - has there been any news?"

"No, I'm afraid not." Alaric answers, shaking his head. "It's this way." Vanessa informs, opening an office door and we follow her inside. "I'll grab the light, feel free to look around. It's fascinating isn't it?" She says, leaving the room.

I stare weirdly after he steps but then recover and walk to the trophies on the wall. I look through the glass closet and stare at her medals and photos. I catch a photo of two new born baby girls laying beside each other. I gulp and pull open the closet door, taking the framed photo and staring at it as tears brimmed my eyes.

What if it's Elena and I? What if it's not? What if it's her twin baby sisters? I don't know why but I have a feeling that's it's us and that's why I was getting emotional. I swallowed the tears away and shoved the framed photo in my backpack.

"Where'd she go?" I ask, looking for Vanessa. All of a sudden, Vanessa comes back with a crossbow as she aimed for Elena. The crossbow flew in the air and towards Elena. I yelped and ran towards Elena, standing protectively in front of her and Damon was already there.

I screamed in pain as the crossbow slides in my stomach and I grunt, falling onto the floor. "Emilia!" Elena yelps, falling in front of me as Alaric restrains Vanessa agaiants the wall and out of the room. I hiss in pain and bite my lip, trying to ease away the pain as Elena looked at me worriedly.

"I'm okay." I grunt, pulling the crossbow out of my stomach. I sigh in relief and throw the crossbow on the floor, lifting my shirt up just in time to watch the wound heal. I rub my temples and look up at Elena and Damon who kneeled in front of me, worry etching their faces.

"That bitch is dead." I growl, standing up and walking to the door but Elena stands in front of me. "Mia, you're not gonna kill her." Elena says, giving me a look. "Watch me, Elena. Watch me do it slowly." I reply, walking past her but Damon grabs my arm.

"You're not going to kill her." Damon says, "I am."

"No," Elena snaps, "None of you are going to touch her. If you do I swear I'll never speak to any of you again."

"Elena, she shot Emilia, your sister."

"I know." Elena replies, "But Emilia wouldn't forgive herself for hurting a person." I nod, "She's right, Damon." Damon scoffs, "We are going to kill her, Emilia."

"You can't tell me what to do, neither can you Elena, it doesn't mean that you can overpower me just because I took an arrow for the both of you. I'm going to do what I want to do and that is to just talk to her, and find out about the Lockwood's; the real reason why we came here."

The two of them both stared at me in shock and I turned around, walking away to continue my dramatic exit. I enter the room where Vanessa is sitting on a couch and Alaric is restraining her down.

"You're lucky I'm letting you live. And my sister, nor I, are Katherine Pierce, we're just the descendants. Oh, and my name is Emilia Gilbert, the daughter of Isobel. And this is Damon Salvatore."

"I'd be extra nice to me right now." Damon says, looking pissed. "Look, we need your help okay? We need to see all of Isobel's research, anything related to Mystic Falls." Elena says, sighing.

Vanessa nods and stands up as she walks to a closet, opening a drawer and pulling out a box. She heads towards Elena and I and shows the box to us, "This box checks Katherine's arrival to Mystic Falls in April 1864."

"Is that all there is about her?" Elena asks, raising a brow. "All that I'm aware of." Vanessa replies, shrugging. I open the box and there is vervain inside, I chuckle as Elena takes some and gives it to Vanessa while she stares at Damon. "Here, take this."

"Does vervain really work?" Vanessa asks, whispering as she keeps an eye on Damon who's on the other room. "Nope, not at all." Damon answers loudly from the other room. "Can he hear us?" Vanessa whispers, eyes widening.

"No, that would be creepy." Damon answers causing me to chuckle. "Can he read minds too?" Vanessa asks, bewildered. "You know, if you want to see me naked, all you have to do is ask." Damon says, smugly as I face palm.

"No, he can't read minds. But he is very capable of being a first rate jackass." I answer as Damon looks back at me, smiling slightly. I roll my eyes at him as Vanessa puts the vervain in her pocket. "Ok," Elena says, "Let's start looking for information."

"What kind of information?"

"Anything suspicious. Anything related to werewolves, Katherine, the Lockwood's, basically anything new." Elena answers and we all start digging.

I searched everywhere. The drawers, the desks, the closets, under the carpet, under the couch, basically everywhere but I didn't find anything. "Any luck?" Damon asks, looking at us. "There's nothing in here about Katherine that we don't already know." Elena says, and I nod agreeing with her.

"Ah, man, you know, it's a bummer we're not friends anymore because I could tell you what I know." Damon says, clicking his tongue. "Now who's manipulating who?" Elena asks, smirking at Damon. "Hey guys, check this out." Alaric calls and we all walk to him.

"There's no record of werewolf mythology in Mystic Falls, but here are some records of some of the lesser-known legends. Everything from Scandinavian skin-walkers to the Maréchal de Retz." Vanessa says, informing us.

"Tonartsliitsii Metslii, which roughly translates into the curse of the sun and the moon." Vanessa says, handing us a book of drawing. "It's Native American." Alaric adds, sighing.

"Aztec. It explains one origin of the werewolf curse traced through Virginia." Vaness adds, "The short story, 600 years ago the Aztecs were plagued by werewolves and vampires. They terrorized the countryside, made farming and hunting impossible until an Aztec shaman cursed them, making vampires slaves to the sun and werewolves servants of the moon. As a result, vampires could only prowl at night and werewolves could only turn on a full moon. When the full moon crests in the sky, who's ever unlucky enough to fall under the werewolf curse turns into a wolf."

"Can they control the transformation?" I ask, curious. "If it were a choice, it wouldn't be called a curse." Vanessa answers, looking at me. "Well, I was bitten. That doesn't count as a curse right?" I ask, causing Vanessa to shake her head. "So, I can control my transformation." I conclude, and she nods.

"Werewolves will attack humans but instinct and centuries of rivalry have hardwired them to hunt their prey of choice, vampires."

"Well, if werewolves were hunting vampires, I would know about it." Damon says, scoffing. "Not if there aren't that many werewolves left alive. Hundreds of years ago, vampires hunted them almost to extinction." Vanessa says.

"Why would they do that?"

"To protect themselves. Legend has it that a werewolf bite is fatal to vampires." Vanessa says, gulping as she looks at me. The room falls into the silence and the four of them turn to look at me with concern. I look at Damon and he looks uncomfortable.

"So, a werewolf bite could kill a vampire." I finally speak, cutting off the silence. Vanessa nods and I joke, "So, there is a way to kill Damon Salvatore." Damon chuckles and rolls his eyes at me, "Don't even think about it."

"Oh, buddy, I already am."
