Will POV

Yes. Will was a genius. Because only geniuses manage to get themselves in more trouble than they already are.

If you couldn’t tell, he was being sarcastic.

Okay, before you hear about the wondrous tale of the not-so-heroic rescue mission, let’s back up a little bit.

Will and his friends had stayed up until midnight, trying to perfect  their plan to save Hazel.

“We’ll need some sort of scuba gear, because more likely than not, we’ll be down there longer than we can hold our breath,” Annabeth said, jotting something down in her notebook.

“I have scuba gear in my parent’s attic. There should be enough for each of us,” Percy offered. Everyone gave him strange looks. “What? You guys know I’ve been waiting for forever to go out into the ocean!”

Annabeth rolled her eyes, but continued. “We’ll need some sort of defense, in case he tries to…” she didn’t need to finish her sentence for the others to know what she was going to say.

“But the monster is indestructible. We can’t hurt it,” Lou Ellen pointed out.

“Then we don’t hurt it,” Leo said, a mischievous smile curling on his lips. “Maybe, if we use tranquilizers, it will knock the monster unconscious.”

Jason smacked a hand to his chest, gasping overdramatically, “Leo, did you say something smart?”

At that, everyone started laughing. Will felt good knowing that even when something terrible happened, his friends could still be positive.

“Oh, ha, ha, ha. I know, I know, the world must be ending,” Leo said. Then, a more serious expression crossed his face. Okay, now the world is ending for real. “But do you guys think it’ll actually work?”

“It’s our best bet,” Reyna told him. “Leo, do you know where we can get some tranquilizer guns and darts?”

Leo’s smile was enough to make any sane person run for the hills. “Of course, madam! Here at Leo’s Deadly Weapons That A Teenager Shouldn’t Have Emporium, we have all the tranquilizer equipment! Now, do you want a small, medium, or extra extra large?”

As Will and company walked down to the docks, he couldn’t help but feel like there was a pit in his stomach.

What if Hazel was already dead? What if the monster wasn’t asleep, and just killed all of them as soon as they showed up? What if the tranquilizers didn’t work? And even worse, he knew that all of this was his fault. If anybody died, it would be on him.

All of these thoughts and doubts filled him like an active volcano; ready to explode at a moment’s notice.

He was so caught up in his mind that he didn’t even notice that he was about to fall into the ocean until Cecil pulled him back.

“Man, are you ok?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Will nodded. Not meeting his eyes. He knew Cecil could see through him, but he didn’t say anything.

“Okay, step right on up to get your scuba suit from your’s truly!” Percy said, setting down a large duffle bag.

Once everyone got there and successfully got them on, Will really felt the weight of what they were about to do.

“And everyone here knows how to swim right?” Percy asked.

“Yeah. It’s not like the sea is the only body of water in this town,” Piper told him.

The scuba gear covered their entire bodies. They wore helmets that covered most of their face, flippers on their feet, and swimming gloves on their hands. They each had an oxygen tank on their backs that had a tube that connected to their mouth holes.

“And grab a gun,” Leo said, “It’s not that hard to shoot. You each get a bag with five darts. When you want to shoot, load your dart into this compartment here, and pull the trigger! Then wham bam, you’ve got yourself an unconscious sea monster!”

Once everyone had everything they needed, they all stood at the edge of the dock.

“You guys ready?” Will asked his friends.

“Yep. Operation save Hazel is officially in action,” Percy smiled wickedly.
