Chapter 5

Marinette was sitting uncomfortably on Adrien's cot. Her eyes darted nervously around the room. She couldn't get what Inferno said out of her mind.

What did it all mean?

Adrien returned to her, carrying a cup of water. He handed it to the shaken up girl and then proceeded to take a seat. He raised an eyebrow. "So, what was it you wanted to tell me?"

"I, um," Marinette coughed. She took a sip of water and then cleared her thoughts. "Inferno caused the apartment building to burst into flames. His brother barely made it out alive."

Adrien widened his eyes in shock, sitting up straight. "A-are you serious?"

"Yes," Marinette frowned. "Then in the woods, he told me that the government would be after people like us... And that we should all team up together."

"No way!" Adrien yelled, taking his gloves off and throwing them on the ground in anger. "After the stunt he pulled at the apartment complex, never! He could've killed someone!"

"That's what I said!" Marinette exclaimed. She grabbed her forehead in dismay. "What are we going to do now?" she wondered.

"I don't know, but we are definitely not teaming up with Inferno," Adrien stated. "There's a big difference between people like him and I."

If only I could figure out the true extent of my powers, Marinette thought.

She fell deeper into her thoughts and wrapped her arms around her torso. She leaned up against the wall. Then, a risky idea came to her mind as she glanced at Adrien's hands.

Marinette unwrapped herself and stood up. She looked up at Adrien, his figure slightly towering over her. "Kiss me," she demanded, unblinking.

"What?" Adrien breathed, his cheeks turning a shade of red.

"Kiss me!" Marinette exclaimed, her heart pounding. "I have to know."

"Know what?" Adrien asked, slightly terrified.

Marinette grabbed his arms with her hands and stood on her tippy toes. She immediately pressed her lips against his, locking in the kiss. Surprised, Adrien's hands flew up and gripped around Marinette's arms to steady himself. The kiss lasted longer than she had intended it to, but it was worth every second.

She released, breathing in heavily. Her eyes pinched close, waiting. Adrien was puzzled and his cheeks were a dark red. No words escaped the boys' frazzled mouth.

"I'm still alive!" Marinette opened her eyes and cheered after a few seconds of stunned silence. "You didn't kill me!"

"What are you talking abo-" Adrien began, but he quickly caught on and glanced down at his hands. They were ungloved and he had placed them on her bare arms. And his lethal touch hadn't killed her!

"What the-" Adrien stuttered. "How?!"

He panicked. His eyes darted to the gloves that lay carelessly on the floorboards of the cabin. They were quickly placed on his hands again.

"I'm immune to your deadly touch, Adrien!" Marinette exclaimed.

"But how?!" Adrien asked. As if he didn't believe it, he ran outside and touched the leaf of a tree with his bare hand. It wilted instantly. He hurried back inside, a confused mess.

"I have powers just like you," Marinette whispered, as if she were in the middle of a crowd.

Adrien raised an eyebrow. "What powers?"

"The power of luck," Marinette said. "That's why I wasn't affected by your deadly touch. My power must have cancelled yours out somehow."

"Marinette, that's great!" Adrien laughed, brushing his sweaty blonde hair out of his face. "I'm so happy right now! I haven't been this happy in years!"

Marinette laughed as well. "I'm happy you're happy!"

Adrien's laughter eventually died off and his serious tone returned. He cleared his throat. "So is that why Inferno was after you all this time?" Adrien pondered.

"Yes," Marinette confirmed. "And he says that the government hasn't forgotten about you."

"I bet," Adrien scoffed. "Inferno is notorious for his lies. It's just another ploy to join him."

"I don't know," Marinette shrugged. "It kinda makes sense."

"No way," Adrien said in disbelief. "There's no way we're joining him."

"I'm not saying that we have to join him, I'm just saying that the government thing seems pretty likely," Marinette replied.

"Well if they were truly after me, wouldn't they have showed up by now?" Adrien questioned, raising an eyebrow. "I've lived in these woods for the past 2 years. Nothing out of the ordinary has happened since then. Well, government wise that is."

Marinette frowned, standing up. She looked up at the trees. The sky was turning dark and gloomy. She had a strange feeling growing in the pit of her stomach. It was as if someone was watching them. "Something doesn't feel right," she whispered.

"What?" Adrien said, turning around and joining her at the window.

"It's him," Marinette breathed, her eyes glued on the figure standing in the bushes.

Adrien grumbled and stomped out of the cabin, his hands clenched at his sides. Marinette swiftly followed him.

Inferno was standing there, a smug grin on his face. "So, still don't believe me, eh?"

"You were spying on us?" Adrien seethed, anger filling his eyes.

"Of course," Inferno replied simply. "I need you two to be on board."

Marinette stepped forward. "How can we trust you? How do we know this isn't some trap?"

"Because," Inferno mumbled, pointing out of the woods and towards the city. "The government has your parents."

Marinette remained quiet, not trusting the villain for a second. Then, as if he sensed her suspicion, he pulled out a newspaper that was slightly charred on the corner. Right there on the front page was a picture of her parents being taken away by men in black suits with the headline: "PARENTS PUSHED INTO GOVERNMENT CUSTODY FOLLOWING APARTMENT FIRE."

Marinette's heart cracked into two. Her entire world shattered. It didn't make any sense! Why her parents? They hadn't done anything wrong! Instead of asking questions, she began trudging forward.

"Marinette!" Adrien called.

"I'm leaving," Marinette said coldly. "I need to find my parents."

Inferno snickered. "Good luck with that. You won't get very far without my help."

Marinette stopped in her tracks. She pinched her eyes shut in frustration. Of course I can't get far without Inferno's help, she thought.

She turned around, staring him dead in the eyes.

"They're locked up in a max security building with cameras, lasers, and all the armed guards you can think of," Inferno said.

Pushing back all of her fears, she cleared her throat and stood tall. "And I suppose you know how to get past all of those fun surprises?" Marinette asked Inferno sternly.

"What villain would I be if I didn't?" he smirked.

"Fine," Marinette breathed after a long pause. She glanced over at Adrien and she could tell he wasn't on board with it at all.

"Can you just answer me this: why have my parents been taken captive by the government?" Marinette asked.

"Because they know you have ties with blonde boy," Inferno stated, nodding his head to Adrien. " Not to mention, you escaped from the hospital when FBI agents asked to speak with you, and multiple eyewitnesses claimed they saw you, the only civilian at the apartment building fire that wasn't screaming for dear life. You've got a lot of evidence piled against you."

"Gee, wonder why that could be?" Adrien growled, narrowing his eyes at Inferno. "I don't trust you at all."

"So I see," Inferno rolled his eyes.

"Enough," Marinette sighed. "How are we going to get my parents back?"

"By sneaking in," Inferno declared. "I know that building inside and out."

"There isn't a peaceful solution? Do we have to sneak in?" Adrien asked.

"Not unless you want to kiss your lives away. As soon as they get their hands on us, we're doomed. We'll be lab rats for the rest of our short lives," Inferno mumbled.

"Okay. And what are you gonna get out of this, exactly? Surely there has to be a reason why you're being so generous all of a sudden," Marinette asked skeptically.

"Because I'm not just making this trip for you. I need your assistance so I can steal a very valuable piece of equipment," Inferno replied.

Marinette couldn't argue. She needed to free her parents. As much as she despised the thought of helping this guy steal from the government, her parents' lives were at stake. And she'd do anything to let them free.

"What piece of equipment is that?" she asked curiously.

"That's a secret, little lady," Inferno whispered. He clapped his hands together in excitement. "Well! We start tomorrow evening folks. Ciao!" He sprinted away, leaving a fiery trail behind him.

Marinette looked towards Adrien who was deep in thought. She sighed. "You don't have to do this for me."

"Marinette," Adrien said, placing his hands on her shoulder. "I'm going to do it. For you. For your parents."

"You could get captured," Marinette whispered, leaning in closer. "Or worse..."

"Some risks are worth taking," Adrien whispered quieter, bending over and pressing his lips against Marinette's. It was full of passion and sent electricity down her spine. She loved him. He loved her. It was perfect.

Stars twinkled up above, the tireless day drawing to a close. The sun set below the horizon, painting the sky a gradient of pink, purple, and blue.

As their lips touched, the night sky glittered in response. And it crossed their minds then that tonight may be the last night they will ever share a kiss beneath the stars again.
