~*~ Chapter 28 - At the End of the War ~*~

"Logan I need you to stand." Dante pulled Logan up, tears streamed down the intelligent man's face. His body was shaking almost as bad as the building but he nodded anyway.

"This isn't going to be a pain at all," Dante whispered sarcastically. He had to find a way to get them all out of here, but Logan was in no shape to help, and neither was Virgil, though, he might be able to push Virgil. "Sorry V," He held out his hand and began muttering a spell, the command words being the only thing audible, "Escape with Roman."

Virgil didn't fight against it, he had felt this sensation once before when he escaped 5 years ago, it pushed his body past what he thought possible and right now, that was what he needed. His eyes glazed over, he was still observing the world but he knew he wasn't in control of his body as he stood facing the man he had called father.

"Logan, get to the door, see if there are any others who need help getting out. I am going to get Patton." It was the first time that Virgil had ever heard Dante use the other's names. He always called them by their species or some other impersonal characteristic. It was like seeing a completely new side of Dante. He had a lot of questions but he was reminded they didn't have a lot of time.

"Where do you all think you are going?" Virgil heard the buzz of the taser, but his body reacted before his mind did and he kicked the taser out of his father's hand. He could not rescue Roman if he was on the floor again, and thus, self-defense was part of the top priority.

"You don't control us anymore." Dante's voice was soft and smooth, a strange sound to hear in such a tense situation.

"Remus, dear, shouldn't you take out the trash?"

"Anything your you!" Remus cooed, a doe eyed look on his twisted face. Remus' intentions towards Dante were obvious, but then again, so were his intentions towards their captor. Remus turned, face twisting into a smirk as the shadows began to slink towards the unlucky man.

"We had a deal demon,"

"But you were soooo unspecific." Remus chuckled, "Nothing in the deal said I couldn't kill you." Dante quickly turned Logan and Virgil away from the scene, running towards the stage to grab the others.

Logan's body would barely move and Dante was not a runner. Virgil on the other hand, under the influence of the spell, vaulted over the chairs, jumped onto the stage and worked to undo Roman's chains.

"Key," he heard Dante shout and his body moved to the pile on the stage that had once been a person. Virgil's body didn't care and mentally he was trying to check out a little bit, not wanting to get squeamish and ruin what was happening.

"I'll make a path for you Deci, wouldn't want you to get hurt." Remus made a kissy face towards Deceit who just rolled his eyes, doing his best to pick up Patton once he got on the stage and got the key from Virgil. Logan had left out the door they came in, doing his best to walk down the line of cages and shoo out anyone who was too afraid to leave.

The five made it out right before the building collapsed, their bodies falling to the ground. There was an unspoken exhaustion between the five of them as Logan clamored to be next to Patton, holding his hand tightly.

"Well, that was fun," Remus clawed his way out of the rubble and shook his head like a dog out of water.

"Dante, what the hell was that?" Virgil asked, his eyes barely open, knuckles white as he clung to Roman. Dante was honestly surprised that Virgil could muster that much anger after the ordeal they just went through.

"A calculated ruse."

"What?"

"Patton wasn't going to survive, and I had a feeling that Remus wouldn't let Roman die yet."

"Wait, you played me?" Remus had hopped over.

"Like the cheap kazoo you are."

"That is so hot." Another love-struck look crossed his twisted face. "Manipulate me again daddy."

Dee choked on his breath before slowly falling into a laughing fit. "You are an absolute nightmare Remus."

Remus wasn't offended, instead, he looked happy. Crawling over to Dante, on all fours, he planted himself in Dee's lap. "Tell me about it toots." He laughed, resting his head in Dante's neck.

"You two are a disaster couple," Virgil's voice was weak as he began to relax slowly, his eyes folding closed. "Is it really all over?"

Dante nodded weakly. "Yeah, I think it actually is." For the first time in a long time, they could finally breathe.

AN: Hey Everyone! I have one more chapter of this that I want to write before I feel like I am done. Is there anything you want to see before I wrap it up and move onto my next story? Also, much like with Open Doors, I will have a Final Author's note at the end of the book where you can ask questions about things I might not have gotten to cover like backstory information or family dynamics. I have enjoyed writing this so much and I am so excited to share my next book with you "Hear Me Out"!
