~*~ Chapter 10 - Broken Hearts ~*~
Never before had Virgil's attacks been this frequent. Sure, there had been moments where the stress of their lives had been a bit too much for Virgil, but since his return, it seemed as if something was triggering an attack constantly. Roman hated to see his beloved thrown into so much chaos. "Virgil, Virgil!" He was still in his small cat form, locked in by Patton's magic. Roman knew that being stuck in this small body was not helping the situation. "Hey, my darling, mi amor, mi alma. I'm here. You are safe." Roman lamented that twice today he had seen his prince in a state of panic and fear, and both times he wasn't able to help.
"It will be okay, you are safe. Let it out." Virgil closed his eyes. Roman waited until he seemed more lucid, giving him space, setting his hand a reachable distances from Virgil so that he could have the physical affection if he wanted.
Finally, Virgil's breathing evened out. Roman gave him a weak smile. "Dark and Stormy, are you doing better?" He asked softly. "Can I touch you?"
Virgil looked at Roman just briefly, a million thoughts and emotions flowing through his eyes like a video. The answer seemed to come suddenly and Roman felt the air leave his lungs. Virgil backed away from him, retreating towards the wall. It wasn't fear in his small eyes, it was something else, pain possibly. Roman swallowed the lump in his throat.
"Ah... okay, do you want me to get Patton?"
Virgil hesitated, the look in his eyes brought Roman back to the night that Virgil left, the night Roman lost the love of his life. He didn't want that to become a possibility.
Virgil nodded.
"Okay, will you be okay on your own?"
Again Virgil nodded.
Roman didn't want to leave Virgil. He knew his soulmate was strong, but he wasn't in the best state of mind. Biting his lip gently Roman nodded in response. "I will be back soon. Do you want me to come back when I bright Patton?" Would the universe allow him to spend a little more time with the person he loved?
Virgil shook his head no, faster than he had made any decision for far tonight. It hurt, but Roman just gave Virgil a weak smile. "Okay, Patton will be here soon." Standing up, Roman left the room, fighting the urge to break down. He was of no use to his soulmate. He refused to cry, but he rubbed his hand against his eyes anyway. It was late, but he was sure that Patton wouldn't mind since it was about Virgil, and Logan would hide his irritation.
"Padre, Virgil had another attack, and he needs you." Knocking on the door, it took a bit before Roman could hear the shuffling and a tired Patton, wearing his cat onesie, came out.
"Is my son okay?"
"I don't think so Pat, I helped him through his attack the best I could, but I think he remembered one of the times when we used to fight."
"Oh, Ro," the sympathy in his voice was apparent but Roman waved it off. "Okay, I'll go check on him." Patton gently put his hand on Roman's shoulder before running off to check on Virgil, leaving Roman alone in the dark hallway. He had to be strong. No one ever said that happily ever after was going to be easy.
But he had been strong for so long. How much longer could he take this?
The shadows seemed to pull at him, gnawing into his heart. Had he believed more in Virgil five years ago, maybe none of this would be happening? He had allowed Deceit to slither his way into his mind, poison him with lies about Virgil needing more space. He should have just talked to Virgil back then, but he had been so easily persuaded. Now, Virgil didn't even want to be near him.
His thoughts of self pity were cut short as he heard a scream coming from Virgil's room, even if his dark and stormy knight didn't want him there, he couldn't just turn away from a scream like that. Roman threw the door open to see Virgil standing there, in hybrid form, holding his side in pain as he fought to stay conscious.
"I told you it was too soon." Patton went to touch his shoulder.
"I'm fine." He flinched back. The eyes I had missed, the eyes that plagued my dreams, they held no love. Virgil was looking at Patton with fear and panic on his face. His mind began to cycle through emotions again. Anger, sadness, confusion, fear. Roman knew he needed to go back to his room. He needed to replenish the barrier.
"Virge..." Patton whispered.
"Please.... Please stop... I need to sort through this... I.... do you hate me?"
"No! Of course not Virgil!" Roman tore himself away and returned to his room. That slight quiver in Virgil's voice, the way his eyes scanned Patton's features, looking for a lie, it broke Roman. He wanted to rush in, to pull Virgil in his arms and assure him that he was loved and everything would be okay. A hand gently rested on his shoulder to stop him.
"Get some rest Roman. Patton and I will handle this for now." Logan, the ever logical, had a point.
Roman relented. Despite his desires, he walked back to his room as Logan walked into Virgil's. "Patton, he is obviously struggling with some of the memories he must have recovered. The two of us should step away from the door and give Virgil an adequate amount of space so that he does not feel trapped."
Patton hesitated, lip quivering before he nodded, moving away from the door with Logan.
"Virgil, why don't you tell us what you have remembered and we can discuss it before returning to sleep."
"None of you wanted me here."
"Please think about that logically, if we truly did not want you here, we would not have spent the past five years searching for you."
"But it took you so long..."
"Well, yes, Patton had to develop a new spell to track you. Normally, we would be able to track your connection symbol but, you seem to have lost yours."
Virgil's hand shot to his neck as if just now noticing it was empty. "It's gone? It's gone. Where did it go?"
"Virgil, calm yourself."
He took a deep breath, attempting to do just that.
"We found your charm abandoned about three miles away from the house."
Patton hurriedly pulled at his shirt and pulled out the two necklaces he had been wearing, taking off the symbol of the moon. "When we found it I kept it for you, kiddo! I knew we would find you one day and I wanted to give it back to you then, but I couldn't really give it to you in your cat form."
"You said a new spell?" Virgil hesitantly looked at the pendant before going to grab it.
"Yes, there are of course some limitations to magic, from what I have learned from Patton. One such limitation being the location of living things. Locating your bond," he gestured to the necklace, "was easy enough, but by the time we found it, you had already been separated from it. We could of course scry on you, however, Patton said that when he tried it was always dark."
Patton's face changed at that. He knew more than he was telling everyone.
"So, Patton spent years testing and developing a new spell so that we could locate you. He would not have expended that much effort if he did not want you here." Virgil's shoulders began to relax a bit as he listened to Logan. There was something comforting about the way he spoke about the facts.
"Are you feeling a bit better Virgil?"
"Yeah, but... I'm still confused."
"Patton, do you think it would be acceptable for Virgil and I to spend the day together?"
"Y... yeah, I guess."
"If that is alright with you Virgil, I can answer all of the questions that you have in the most straightforward and logical way possible."
Virgil nodded gently. "Whatever." He didn't feel safe here, but if he could get more questions answered, it might help him feel less anxious.
"Very well, for now we can leave you to rest, do you think you will be able to sleep on your own?"
Again Virgil nodded, but all three of them knew it was a lie. Virgil probably wouldn't sleep the rest of the night.
