Choi Han had once drowned in a sea of despair.
When the first time he mysteriously appears in a dark forest full of monsters and poisonous plants.
Running for his dear life, losing the wallet where his family photo was—the only memory that remained.
He drowned.
How long had he been stuck in this situation?
A year? Ten years? No, he even lost the numbers to count.
He remembered the early years when he was in that cursed forest, the most difficult times of his life. Every night he crouched under a tree, dug a hole and hid there in order not to be noticed by the monsters.
In the second year he began to fight. Make weapons from dry tree branches. A year there, he realized these trees are not ordinary trees. They are hard to destroy. Some even contain poison.
In his third year, Choi Han understood that he only had two choices.
Survive or die.
Alone, trying to survive without anyone.
He's sinking deeper and deeper.
Until one day, he saw a light.
A hand pulled him.
He found a new warmth.
Harris Village. He finds family there. Finally he found a place to call "home".
Unfortunately, fate seems to hate him so much.
Once again, his home is gone.
That hand him let go.
A secret organization attacked Harris Village, burned everything to the ground without even giving mercy to children or women.
What hurt Choi Han even more, all of that happened when he wasn't there.
At that time, he was looking for medicine in the Dark Forest. When he returned, only the ashes that had been razed to the ground remained.
Once again, he drowned.
An aura of despair took over him.
Deeper.
He killed all the remaining members of the secret organization.
Almost out of oxygen.
The sky seemed to understand, crying along with the tears that fell from Choi Han's eyes. His body was covered in blood, which was not belong to him.
Digging the ground for the final resting of the villagers, clasped hands while praying. He did not believe in the existence of God. He also didn't know whether God really existed or not.
However, if only ... if only Gods really existed ....
Please.
May they all rest in peace.
Please send someone to save him from this sea of despair.
Running, ignoring the fatigue that continues to spread all over his body. Playing deaf to the screams of his muscles that say they're tired. He swore in his little heart that he would take revenge for the innocent villagers. Choi Han never stopped. He kept running, towards a town where the territory's family lived.
At the very least, he hoped the villagers would receive a proper burial.
He's sinking further and further. There is only darkness as far as the eye can see.
This time, it seemed that God had heard his prayer.
With the cold night sky, he saw a certain red haired man appears.
Choi Han can see a ray of light up there.
Choi Han was tired of the color red. The blood of the villagers. The blood of those who killed them. The blood from his own lips that he bit too hard, to suppress all the sadness in his chest.
He was sick of the color red.
However, this one gave him some warmth.
Once again, he can see a hand.
The man's red hair glistened in the moonlight. Like fireworks blooming in the silence of the night sky.
The man stretched out his hand.
He gave him something called "home".
That hand pulled him out of the endless sea.
Maybe, just maybe, Choi Han didn't really hate the color of red.
Because the color of red reminded him of Cale-nim.
This time, he is free.
Choi Han learns how to protect.
He can breathe oxygen again.
Choi Han learned what warmth feels like.
He saw a light shining brightly above him.
Choi Han learns what it's like to have a family.
The light that was originally far from reach, has now stood right in front of his eyes.
Choi Han learns what it's like to go home.
Back home.
The place where his family is waiting.
And that light is Cale-nim.
That light is like Raon's sparkling eyes.
That light is the sound of On and Hong's laughter.
That light is when Rosalyn learns new things from Eruhaben-nim.
That light is when Lock got a new shield from Sheritt-nim.
That light is like the face of Beacrox when he gets fresh cooking ingredients.
That light is Ron's benign smile every morning he woke Cale up.
That light is home.
The place where he takes out all his grudge.
Where he cries and laughs.
Where he feels happiness.
Choi Han laughed softly at the memories that played inside his head.
He stretched the muscles in his hands that felt numb, leaning against the back of the sofa layered in soft leather.
"What's wrong? You look happy."
Choi Han scoffed. The smile on his face disappeared when he heard the voice.
"None of your business."
The gray haired man in a black suit let out a long breath. His deep voice filled the senses of hearing again.
"I will retire soon. I hope you can do your job well."
"I'm not a troublemaker like you. Even the other gods agree that you're the jackass that always cause trouble."
The man scratched his cheek, smiling awkwardly.
"Well, you look ready?"
Choi Han smiled bitterly.
"Do I have another choice?"
An awkward silence filled their surroundings, before being finally broken by a fake cough from the gray-haired man.
"I just came here to say goodbye."
His sharp eyes softened.
"Good luck, Choi Han."
Choi Han just waved his hand, looking back at the giant screen that had been showing a scene since earlier.
"Just get lost already."
The man laughed softly, before finally his entire body cracked and turned into glowing black dust.
Choi Han took a deep breath.
They have been kind enough to take care of him.
A thousand years have passed, and the death of his family is still fresh in his memory.
Sighing, the man smiled wryly.
He stared at the giant screen in front of him. The screen showed new faces that born in different worlds. They smile, laugh, happy.
All of his family reincarnated, except him.
That's the price he has to pay as a single-lifer.
The days when he could still be by their side were played again inside his head.
They always take care of him.
They gave him the meaning of warmth, although now he no longer can feel it anymore.
He had forgotten what warmth felt like.
But he had felt it once.
And that's enough.
This time, let Choi Han take care of them.
As the new God of Death.
