"... (Y/N)..."
"(Y/N)..!"
"I'm so sorry...!"
"... Wake up! (Y/N)! Wake up-!"
Black eyes burst open. He pants unevenly as his sight focuses and flicks to every little thing that surrounds him. Once running at 80 mph, his heart calmed when he recognises the room around him.
'I hate those dreams...'
He was on a white bed in a peach-colored room. There weren't many things held in the said room- aside from the random sprinkle of trinkets and wooden furniture.
The wolf moved to get up. His hair was the pure definition of 'morning hair', and his clothes were somehow more messy and tattered than it already was.
He rubbed his tired eyes. The dark pupils were glossed over and the bags under his eyes hung lower than the day prior. He could feel the dirt that was pilling high underneath the fur on his face.
'I feel gross.'
Before the animal could do anything about his appearance, the door beside him creaked open. He whipped around to face the person- but calmed slightly when he could see the kind, motherly face of the individual.
"Good morning, (Y/N)."
"... Morning."
A brunette woman standing at about five feet, four inches looked at (Y/N) with a welcoming smile. The cat ears resting on her head flicked slightly to the side as her tail swished left and right slowly. Her dark brown and green heterochromia eyes gazed at (Y/N) with care and the slightest caution.
She adjusted the gloves covering her hands (or paws or whatever) as well as the grey bathrobe she was wearing. Her eyes looked back over to (Y/N).
"How are you doing, hon?"
(Y/N) shuffled slightly on his feet. "... Okay..." It was very clear he wasn't used to the motherly attention.
"That's nice to know, love. I made some waffles if you want some. There sittin' in the kitchen."
"... Okay."
The cat flashed a sweet smile before exiting the room, not forgetting to close the door behind her.
The wolf just stood there. His thoughts were running wild.
Did he recognise the woman? Yes.
Why? Well...
.
.
.
'I suppose it isn't so bad...'
"Nobody moves!"
'Nevermind.'
Five men rush through a door and onto the rooftop. They were dressed in navy and black armor and carried heavy weapons, all of which were pointed toward Knuckles, Amy, (Y/N), and Sonic.
Knuckles eyes scrunch in anger as he glares at the armed humans. "Oh, great. Now what?"
The man in the middle, who was clearly the leader of the group, glared back at Knuckles. "Don't try running away," he demanded while surveying the group with his weapon.
(Y/N) looks around him, looking for a means of escape. The roof was very high up and the two doors were behind the armed men- which, of course, wasn't a problem for him, but he wanted the others to have a way to escape too.
"Sonic!"
The sound of a child screaming and wind whooshing in caught (Y/N) off guard.
The plane from before was heading straight towards them and a ladder was dangling down from the blue body. Sonic grabs Amy and latches onto the ladder. He quickly tries to grasp onto (Y/N) as well, but the wolf ducked out of the way instinctively and rolled next to where Knuckles stands.
The red echidna glances at his travel buddy beside him. Sonic and Amy call out to them, trying to get them to leave before any more trouble starts, but they just stare at each other.
"... Go."
At that one word, the two sprinted off toward the plane. The men behind them shouted and fired at the retreating animals, thankfully missing as Knuckles successfully grabs onto the ladder.
(Y/N) continues to chase after the blue and yellow plane. His body expertly moved and dodged the incoming bullets aimed his way.
"Come on, (Y/N)! Jump!"
He looks up and his black eyes widen.
Amy's arm is stretched out far. She's screaming for (Y/N) to grab her hand as Sonic holds her. Both his and her green emerald eyes bore into him with pure worry.
"Grab on!'
...
"... (Y/N), grab on!"
A black fox called out to him. Her yellow raincoat-covered arm stretched out to the point of breaking. Her eyes were glossed over in pain and her legs trembled from the weight.
The wolf tightly grasped onto her hand and the rest of his body hung off the ledge. He looked up, his black eyes meeting her red ones, but he couldn't help but slightly worry.
"... Six..?"
A tear fell down her dirt-stained cheek. Her hands began to tremble and her ears dropped to rest on her head.
"Six, are you okay? I can lift myself up if you-"
Before he could finish his sentence, his hand went cold.
The feeling of wind harshly pushing against his body and the tears pouring out of his eyes were all he could feel.
The last thing he could hear was the sound of a stomach growling.
...
"..."
"... (Y/N)!"
'Not again...'
"Grab on!"
'I can't have that happen again.'
"Jump!"
"I CAN'T!" Just before Amy could grab his hand, (Y/N) pulled away.
(Y/N) closed his eyes and covered his ears as he began free-falling off of the roof.
He desperately tried to block out the sound of Amy and Knuckles screaming his name in horror.
The fast air around him began to deform and glitch. Everything around him began to morph and bend. People still around the area began to wriggle and gasp in agony as the loud, harsh sound of static began to harm their ears immensely.
His eyes and hands glowed a bright blue. His voice broke as he began to scream in pure mental pain and agony.
Just before he hit the ground, everything stopped. The screaming stopped, the static stopped, everything stopped. It wasn't til he opened his tear-stained eyes, did he notice that he had teleported into an alleyway.
(Y/N) sniffed and with a sob, he collapsed to the ground.
His tail wrapped around his leg as his hat fell to the ground in front of him. The wolf's body trembled immensely despite his arms tightly surrounding himself.
He silently cried. Alone. For hours.
The boy was absolutely broken.
He had no idea how long he had sat in that alleyway.
The sun was gone from the sky, plunging the alleyway into absolute darkness. The only light was from a street light a block away from where (Y/N) currently was.
His body stopped shaking a while ago and his tears dried hours before, but he could find himself moving. His brain crashed from mental stress, his eyes would move from the ground, and his hands wouldn't leave from under his head.
(Y/N) felt strangely comforted by the disgusting ground he lay on. If he wasn't fighting himself internally, he could take a nice nap or two.
But, he couldn't.
He had to move. He had to leave.
Reluctantly, the boy stood up before quickly toppling over. He would've kissed the floor if his arms didn't take the fall for him.
'Ouch...' (Y/N) sat up and brushed off his scrapped elbow. 'Take two.'
His hands lay on the ground and slowly pushed his weak legs up. They wobbled like jello and lacked any sort of feeling in them causing (Y/N) to let out a frustrated sigh.
"... C'mon..."
He caught himself before he could fall by flailing his arms out half-hazardously. He stood there a second, completely still, before taking a hesitant step. And then another. And soon (Y/N) was able to successfully walk again.
He checked his surroundings carefully before walking out of the alleyway.
He walked a few blocks, enjoying the night air and city lights. The wolf could help but admire the stars too. He didn't have much time to enjoy the stars in Pale City due to it raining most of the time, so he was thrilled to see the sprinkles of little lights enveloping the night sky.
(Y/N) decided to find another alleyway to sleep in. One with maybe some boxes or old clothes he could make into a makeshift bed. He turned down an alleyway with an excited smile on his face before that smile quickly dropped to the ground.
There, standing in the middle of the dark alleyway, was two hooded figures. One was wearing a red cloak while the other was wearing a light green coat.
They were both taller than him and seemed to be hiding some muscle behind the cloak they bore. The green one turned around when it noticed the boy and through the darkness, (Y/N) could make out a bright grin.
It nudged the shoulder of the red one, who shared the same grin when its eyes met (Y/N)'s.
"Hi." The green spoke one word as it turned fully toward him.
"Bye."
(Y/N) turned to walk away but ended up bumping into the mysterious, red-cloaked person.
"You're the one that helped defeat Eggman on the roof. Are you not?" They smirked and looked (Y/N) up and down with unknown intent. The green one walked up and stood behind (Y/N), its grin never leaving its face.
He didn't answer and instead glared at the person. His ( dominant hand ) reached behind him to grab his axe just in case anything went any further. "Why?"
"Simple. An enemy of the doctor-" The red one started. "- is a friend of ours." The green one finished.
Together, they removed their hood.
Underneath the green cloak was a surprisingly soft smile with matching gentle eyes. Underneath the red cloak was intimidating, dark eyes that, somehow, held no bad intentions.
The person underneath the green cloak laughed when (Y/N) did a clear double-take. The two were not dangerous- or perverted- hell, they weren't even people at all. They were animals like (Y/N); the green cloak was a cat woman and the red cloak was a dark brown, dog man littered with different scars.
The cat woman walked around to the side of the dog and immediately interlocked hands. She looked over to (Y/N) whose mouth is still agape.
"Hi again! Sorry about possibly scaring you. We wanted to make sure you were the mobian we were looking for and not just some cosplayer!"
'There's that word again...'
The man spoke up with a comedic smile, "Mom, I think you scared the shit outta him. Literally."
The cat gasped and hit the man's shoulder. "Mind your language, Dad! He is a child!"
The man chuckles as the woman sighs and shakes her head. Finally, they bring their attention back to the confused wolf in front of them. "What's your name, hun?" The woman asks with a kind smile.
"... (Y/N)."
"That's a lovely name! My name is Sarah the Fold and this is my husband, Phillip the Heeler."
"Nice to meet ya, kid."
(Y/N) simply waves, his throat still healing from earlier.
"I assume you also got randomly brought here a few days ago?" The man, Phillip, scratched at the inside of his ears while making direct eye contact with the boy. (Y/N) couldn't help but shiver from the intimidating aura he was giving off.
"Y-Yes..."
He kicked himself mentally for stuttering and silently huffed when the Heeler chuckled at his mistake.
Sarah interrupted her husband mocking and placed a hand on (Y/N)'s shoulder. "Would you like to stay with us? We found a nice house we could stay at til we could find a way back home!"
(Y/N) didn't look like it but he was considering it. It was free shelter, possibly free food, and he gets a mother and father figure as a bonus :D!
'I like that mother and father part... but what if they turn out like Six?'
But what if they're not :D?
'Good point.'
"Alright. Lead the way."
"Awesome!" Sarah and Phillip walked off with (Y/N) not that far behind. It didn't take long before the three animals arrived at what appeared to be an abandoned home just outside the busy city.
.
.
.
[ And that brings us back to now ]
The wolf finally exited his room.
'Alright. If I remember correctly...' He places a finger on his chin. 'The kitchen was to my left.'
(Y/N) didn't even make one step before freezing in place.
'...Or was it to my right?'
He turned around and marched back to his room to try to remember the layout of the house.
'The bathroom is over there. The storage room is in front of me. The living room is to my left... I think. So, that must mean-' "Kitchen is to your right."
The gruff voice made (Y/N) jump three feet in the air. A familiar chuckle causes the boy to stop panicking and instead huff silently.
He turns around to meet the eyes of Phillip, who has a tobacco pipe in his mouth and smoke surrounding him. The Heeler was only wearing ripped jeans held up by a belt, exposing his somewhat muscular, scared stomach.
He grinned down at (Y/N). "You lost, dog?"
The wolf in question huffed and shook his head before avoiding eye-contact all together. Phillip laughed and crossed his arms, but his smile dropped, however, when he noticed the quality of the boy's clothes.
Phillip sighed, a cloud of smoke flowed out of his mouth as a result, and offered (Y/N) his jeans and a pair of boxers.
"Where did you pull these from-"
"Doesn't matter, just change into 'em."
(Y/N) quietly mutters, "Thanks," causing Phillip to smile. The Heeler pauses when (Y/N) suddenly begins to strip naked. Right in front of him. In the middle of the hallway.
"Man, what the fuck are you doing."
"Here... My clothes."
"... Bitch, go put some damn clothes on."
"But I'm a boy-"
"And?? Cover up."
"I have no clothes."
"I just gave you those jeans."
"Oh :/"
.
Finally, (Y/N) was nicely dressed. He didn't like the feeling of the belt, so he took it off a returned it to Phillip; leaving him sporting slightly saggy, black, holey pants and his long, brown trench coat.
Phillip looked him over and nodded. "Better. Do you want me to wash your coat too?"
"No."
"Okay... How about-" The Heeler walked over and buttoned up two of the buttons on (Y/N)'s coat, covering up his stomach and leaving just a bit exposed. "- that?"
The wolf shrugged and said it was decent. Phillip shrugged too and pushed (Y/N) off to eat breakfast.
.
(Y/N) walked into the kitchen and stopped to look around.
The room had nice salmon walls with white cabinets, white pantries, black countertops, a black fridge, and a black stove. The dining room was beside it; the only thing separating the two rooms was the black, marble island surrounded by four chairs.
At the island, Sarah placed a plate of steamy, fluffy pastries before moving to return to the stove. She stopped midway and grinned when she noticed (Y/N) looking her way.
"'Bout time, (Y/N). I was about to let Zomom here eat your waffles!" The Fold jabbed her thumb toward the dining table where someone new sat. The wolf followed her thumb and tilted his head when he saw a child scarfing down waffles drowned in maple syrup, fruit syrup, and whipped cream.
The child seemed to be a yellow-orange squirrel with a big, bushy tail that kept waving and waging as he took another bite. The child's hair was slipped forward and his shoed feet kept kicking under the table where he sat.
His childish eyes looked up at Sarah with adoration.
"This is so good, Mrs. Sarah!" He shouts despite having food in his mouth.
"Thank you, Ray! There's some more if you want some."
He, apparently called Ray, lets out a loud, "Yes!" and jumps out of his chair to go grab some more waffles from the island.
(Y/N) finally goes to sit down a seat away from the kid and stares down at the plate of bare waffles the cat prepared him. He pokes at it with his hand as His face scrunches up in confusion.
'What is this..? Why is it smoking?'
Hesitantly, (Y/N) picks up the top waffle and puts the whole thing in his mouth. He bites down on it before finally beginning to chew. '... That's... pretty good..!'
Just like Ray, he scarfed down the waffles on his plate, not leaving a single crumb behind.
The squirrel suddenly moved to sit beside the wolf, who could help but look at him weirdly in response. Ray stuck his hand out for a handshake with a bright smile. "Hi! I'm Ray! Ray the Flying Squirrel!"
"... (Y/N)."
Ray retracts his hand after realising that (Y/N) might not be able to give him a handshake when his gloveless hands are covered in waffle crumbs. He instead decides to start up another conversation with the older teenager.
"Hey, (Y/N)?"
"Hm?"
"Have you been far outside of the city at all?"
"Yes."
"Really!? Then have you seen a red and black armadillo?? Sometimes he wears a cowboy hat with a twig or something in his mouth?"
(Y/N) places a finger on his chin before shaking his head. "No."
Ray's hopeful face shrinks down into a frown. "O-Oh... okay."
Sarah looks over at the noticeable drop in the room. Her eyes land on Ray sulking in his seat, poking at his food with a fork. She frowns in pity and walks over to pat the sad squirrel on the shoulder. Slowly, Sarah squats down beside him and places a hand on his head, ruffling it a little.
"Don't worry, hun. We'll go out to find him again today."
He nods sadly causing Sarah to let out a sigh.
Before she could say anything, Phillip burst into the room.
"Mom! Look at the news!"
Both (Y/N) and Ray raise a brow as the woman stands up and follows Phillip into the living room. A few seconds later, a loud gasp and mumbling could be heard.
The children share a look of confusion before walking to the living room. Inside, the two adults stare at the screen with wide eyes as the sound of a woman talking could be heard from the T.V. Ray decided to get a closer look as (Y/N) decided to stay near the doorway.
The reporter on T.V. began to become clear as Phillip turned the volume up.
"- witnesses at the site report that the construction machinery seemed to malfunction whenever it came within close contact with this strange jewel.
The stone does appear to be radiating and invisible highly charged energy."
(Y/N) crossed his arms and scrunched his brows. 'Sounds... interesting, I guess? What's so special about some cool rock?'
When the reporter pulled out a sheet of paper, everyone in the room (excluding (Y/N) and Phillip) gasped in shock. Ray got closer to the T.V. to ensure his eyes weren't playing tricks on him.
"No way..." Ray started. "Is that-" "A rock?" Everyone turned to look at (Y/N) in surprise causing him to slightly flinch.
"... What?"
Sarah was the first to speak, "How do you not know what a Choas Emerald is??"
"A what-?" Mono looked back at the T.V. to see the drawing of the green, magnetic rock. It didn't look anything special to him. Just another rock.
"Doesn't matter! What matters is that we need to get it before Eggman does!" Ray sprints to the back door but doesn't make it far as Phillip grabs his arm. "Hold on, speedy. What if Sonic and his team are already going to go get it right now?"
Ray turns around slowly with a frown. "Sonic doesn't watch TV. He's too busy running his butt off."
"Good point," Sarah chuckles as Phillip releases Ray's arm. "... But, what do we do if Eggman's already there?"
"... We could take him on?"
"With what, small fry?"
"Wellll... Uh-"
"I can be a dis... uh- a dis..."
"A distraction?" Phillip chuckles.
"Yeah, that."
Sarah squinted her eyes in thought before her face broke out into a smile. "So, Ray and (Y/N) will go retrieve the emerald. (Y/N) will act as a distraction as Ray sneaks by to grab it. During this, Dad and I will go and look for Ray's friend."
Ray and Phillip agree with the plan and nod in understanding, while (Y/N) sits in the doorway; highly confused. "Why is the kid coming and not either of you..?"
"Ray beat Eggman multiple times so he has experience. Me and Mom on the other hand-"
"It's Mom and I, babe." Sarah interrupts Phillip with a Cheshire grin.
"Shut up...
- are too old to fight Eggman."
(Y/N) nods in understanding before suddenly being dragged out the back door. Ray releases him with an excited pat on the back causing (Y/N) to slightly shuffle forward from the force.
Once everybody was outside, they all faced each other to say their hopefully temporary goodbyes. The children tried to make it quick to get a headstart to the emerald but were suddenly enveloped in a bone-crushing hug.
"Don't you dare get caught by the humans alright!?" Sarah screamed in their ears. Tears quickly enveloped her eyes and her hug became tighter. The boys tried to say something back but their lungs were completely crushed.
"M-Mrs. S-Sarah..!" Ray tried to break from the hug but only ended up being squeezed tighter.
The Heeler chuckled behind her and shook his head. He finally stopped the hug, leaving two wheezing kids and a sad cat mobian. Before Sarah could enwrap them in another killer hug, Phillip secured an arm around his wife's waist, keeping her from moving from his side.
"Alright, kids. Be safe." "Bye, boys!" The adults called out to them as they slowly walked into the woods just behind the house.
"Bye!" Ray called back as (Y/N) simply waved.
The squirrel turned to the wolf before taking his hand and skipping off toward the big city.
