THREE MONTHS LATER
"I'm going to move you on the west wing of the building."
I nod my head, silently questioning the fact I can't just stay on the east wing, but I don't want to anger my old boss so I just silently give in.
"We hired a new guy today and the east wing is better for me to have him since I'm on this side."She answers the question inside of my head.
I nod silently, smiling.
"Alright, well get to work." She sighs, looking back down at her desk, grabbing a blue inked pen.
I stand up quickly and rush out of her office, my heels sinking into the carpet with every step to the west wing hallway. I have to face whole new workers and make whole new relationships with completely different people. Shit.
It was hard enough doing it at first, but eventually, three months later I befriended most employees. We all know each other's names and say hi to each other everyday, making this working experience even better.
I shake it off. I'm a new person, I'm not that quiet girl anymore that doesn't know how to talk to people or doesn't want to offend anyone. I don't give a shit.
I reach the end of the hallway and open the door, being revealed to large, grey cubicles that all look the same.
Just like on the east wing, there is frantic walking around, phones ringing off the chain, although on this side there is a large wall of just glass windows, letting the sun in, instead of a dull grey wall. It's honestly beautiful even if it's just overlooking the city of Chicago.
I walk towards the mail room and open the door to walk inside. The cart with the mail in it is resting against the wall.
I grab the handle and turn around to walk back out. I head to cubicle one.
"Hey," I say, looking up quickly to see a familiar profile of a face. I furrow my brows. Then she looks at me.
"Hi." She smiles before standing up. I back away slightly. She blinks at me in confusion. "Wait..." She trails off. I feel my cheeks heat up. "Rauline?"
I bite down on my bottom lip.
"Yeah, here's your mail." I say. She takes it before I turn around to leave quickly.
"Wait, Rauline." She says, making me freeze. I turn to her again. She gives me a small smile. "How are you?"
"I'm okay." I nod. "How are you?"
She steps closer. "I'm good. Um...how is Louis?"
I sigh shakily. I am definitely not telling her I am divorced. "He's okay." I shrug, telling her the best answer I could give.
"That's good."
"Hey babe I- Rauline. Hey, it's you again." Niall smiles at me. He steps next to Lucia who stands in front of me, smiling at the blond man fondly. Holy shit.
"Niall, this is who..." I trail off.
"Yes, this is Lucia, my fiancè."
I part my lips but smile slightly. "Congratulations guys." I say quietly. "I've got to go back to work. Talk to you later?"
"Yeah of course." Niall says.
I turn quickly and give the rest of the mail to each cubicle, with people that don't talk very much and aren't very friendly at all.
I can't fucking believe Lucia and Niall are happily married.
I remember clearly when we stopped being friends because of what she did to me.
FOUR YEARS EARLIER
"Harry dumped me." She said, looking up at me slowly after crying silently in her bed since last night. I couldn't sleep. I was extremely worried about her.
My mouth dropped. "What? Why?" I asked, rushing over to her to embrace the girl into a tight hug.
"He said I get too jealous." She whispered into my shoulder.
"Well who the hell could blame you? He's hot. A bunch of girls must want him." I said, trying to lighten the mood. She rolls her eyes.
"Look, if he's going to dump you because of that, you don't deserve him."
"I-i want him back." She stammered before beginning to cry again, burying her head in the crook for my neck. I pat her on the back.
"You know what we should do? I think we should watch a movie and eat some shit and not care about anyone else but us." I smiled. "We don't need boys to make us happy, Lucia." I told her, shaking my head.
"Easy for you to say, Rauline. You have a damn boyfriend." She snapped, cheeks flushing. I frowned.
I heard a knock on the door, making me stand up and walk towards it to open it and see Louis standing there with his hands in his pockets. "Hey," I smiled slightly.
"Hey, are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah." I sighed, looking back to see Lucia with her head in her knees.
"What's wrong with her?"
"Harry broke up with her." I said, turning back to him. "You didn't know?"
"I wasn't told yet." He shrugged.
"Oh. Well, want to come in?"
He nodded and joined us.
"I really don't want to see him right now." Lucia snapped, looking at Louis.
"I wasn't the one who broke up with you." He said, throwing his hands up in the air.
"Your his friend." She narrowed her eyes at him.
"Look, I'm going to go get popcorn from the ktichen downstairs and you two are going to get along. Okay?" I said.
"Will do." Louis nodded as Lucia just glared at me.
I rolled my eyes playfully and left them.
PRESENT
I came back to Lucia crashing her lips onto his and immediately after that, I switched roommates because I wasn't going to let her give me that, "It's not what it looks like" bull shit because I saw it with my own eyes what she had done.
I sigh heavily, relieved when I reach the last cubicle.
I turn into it and stop frozen in my tracks at the sight before me.
I groan out loud, slapping my hand against my forehead when we look at each other. "You've got to be fucking kidding me." I snap, closing my eyes for a moment.
I look at him again to see him smirking.
"Nice to see you too, babe." He says, leaning his shoulder against the wall.
"No, no. This isn't going to happen. You know why? Because I am going to ask to go to the east wing again and stay there." I say angrily, slamming his mail onto the table.
"You still hate me?"
I sigh heavily and force a smile onto my face to make it dramatically pleasant. "I don't hate you. I just really don't want to see your face." I say.
I turn around quickly.
"Rauline." He says loudly, voice stern.
"What?" I snap.
He sighs heavily and strides up to me. "I know Lucia works here. You probably saw her too. Brings back bad memories, huh?" He smirks again, looking smug.
I refrain from raising my hand and slapping him. That was one argument we had in our years of being together, the biggest one we've had while we were dating. Although, overall, we didn't have many fights while dating.
"But one more thing."
I don't say anything, just glare at him silently.
"We can be friends, ya know."
"No Louis."I say, crossing my arms over my chest as I suck in a large breath. "We can't be friends." I tell him, making him raise his eyebrows.
"And why not?"
"Because I don't like you. Whatsoever. And why would you even want to be friends?"
"You like me. It's just that our sexual chemistry is too strong."
"Your disgusting." I spit.
He grabs my wrist tightly, and I try to pull away, but he pulls me towards him suddenly, making us not even centimeters apart.
Our noses brush and he parts his lips, flickering his gaze down to my own lips.
I feel myself getting aroused, but I don't give him the satisfaction of showing it.
"I will knee you in the balls." I seethe.
He chuckles but doesn't let me go. "Can we be friends, Rauline?" He asks again. "I feel bad enough as it is to what happened to our relationship and I promise I won't make any advances on you."
I back away quickly before fixing my dress with a huff. "Fine." I say. "Just so you could leave me the hell alone."
"So you'll start answering my calls again?"
"Whatever." I mumble, grabbing the cart, my palms sweaty. Why the hell does he effect me so damn much? "Why have you been calling me anyway?" I ask, remembering I have been ignoring his calls for two months now and he stopped calling on the third.
"I was wondering why you haven't come over." He says, his smirk lessening a little. "For Thomas."
I blink and grip the handle of the cart tighter. "I'm sorry." I say.
He doesn't say anything, probably wanting me to keep talking.
"I was trying to get my head in order."
He nods slowly, looking down. "You were trying to stop loving me."
"I stopped loving you a long time ago." I chuckle, rolling my eyes. "I told you that."
He frowns now.
"I'm going to call you later so pick up." He says as he sits down on the chair behind his desk. "Now get out of my damn cubicle." He snaps, making me look at him with a frown and raised eyebrows.
He chuckles, obviously meaning for it to be a joke, but after so many damn months and years of actually fighting, I don't laugh.
I turn around and walk away from him to continue work.
LATER
I hear my phone ring suddenly in the silence of my bedroom. Harry and Diane are both at work.
Harry doesn't come home till eleven and Diane doesn't come till nine.
It's eight now.
I look at the caller ID to see it's Louis. And i've been doing so damn well without him, but, I should answer, just to satisfy his damn needs.
I groan before answering the call and putting it to my ear.
"Hi." I say tiredly, putting my arm over my eyes.
"Hey babe." He says.
I don't respond.
"Your not even going to try and be nice?" He chuckles.
"Louis stop." I snap.
"Stop what?" He asks, legitimately sounding clueless.
"Stop being like this suddenly." I chuckle bitterly, sitting up in the bed, feeling my cheeks turn slightly red from annoyance. "You can't go from being a angry asshole to me to being a playful, smug asshole. Just stop talking to me."
"Then why the hell did you answer, Rauline?" He snaps.
"So you would stop annoying me!"
"No." He says.
I narrow my eyes at the wall across from me. "What the hell do you mean, no?" I snap.
"You still love me."
"No I don't!" I yell.
I hear a frustrated groan come from him. "Fine!"He yells. "I just want to see you!" He suddenly yells.
My eyes widen at his words.
I swallow thickly and take the phone away from my ear to put it on speaker. I sigh shakily.
I close my eyes.
"Bye Louis."
"Rauline! Wait, please." He says.
"What?" I groan out annoyedly.
"Meet me somewhere?"
I roll my eyes silently.
"And if you deny, I'll keep annoying you until you'll accept."
I grit my teeth and roll my eyes again.
"Your so..." I trail off, closing my eyes.
"Wonderful, handsome, sexy, charming, lo-"
"No." I smile slightly but I frown quickly again, furrowing my eyebrows in annoyance. "Where do you want to meet?" I ask, glaring at my lap.
"Cafe."
(Finally, some more moments with Rauline and Louis.)
