(NOT GONNA LIE, BACK TO YOU IS THE BEST REPRESENTATION OF THIS STORY EVER BRO.)
THE NEXT DAY
"Thanks for letting me stay with you and Harry, Diane." I say, smiling sheepishly as I sit down on the dining chair, grabbing the cup of tea she had made for me.
"It's no problem at all, Rauline. I didn't realize you and Louis were so in war that you jusy had to divorce." She says quietly, furrowing her eyebrows. I shake my head.
"No. It's okay. " I sigh, shaking my head.
"How long has it been?"
"Six years."
"I mean...you've been married."
"Um. Two." I tell her. "And it was about to be three two months from now." I rub my eyes. "But it's okay, seriously. I don't care. Marriages don't last long these days, I've always wondered why, but I finally realized, guys just don't give a shit about you." I sigh.
"I give a shit." Harry says as he walks into the room with an offended expression.
"Why do you always seem so hurt when your around me?" I laugh.
"Because you assume too much, Rauli." Diane sighs.
"Exactly." Harry agrees. "Not all guys are the same and I have made sure to show Diane that. But um..." Harry trails off, making us both look at him with curiosity. "What exactly happened between you two?"
I furrow my eyebrows. "I don't know. He just...he became this whole new person after we got married. He was more distant than before, and, he just..." I suck in a breath.
"It's okay, you don't need to explain it all now." Diane says.
"I think you would know this Diane but...Louis' a really passive person. At least, I think so." Harry says to me.
I nod. "That's what I thought but then we started fighting constantly." I sigh tiredly, rubbing the bridge of my nose.
"What could've happened?" Diane asks.
"I-i don't know. I told you he doesn't talk to me. He never did, not even when we were dating."
"Then...why did you stay?" She asks quietly.
"Something..." I trail off, tapping my fingernails against the table mindlessly.
"Something made you stay."
I nod.
"What?"
I shrug silently. "I wish I knew."
Diane sighs. "Well, maybe you should have a few days by yourself, you know? Harry and I were planning to go on a trip this weekend to Florida and stay for a week or two. Do you think that can give some time to think, figure yourself out and all?"
I smile. "Yeah, that'd be cool. Thanks Diane." I chuckle quietly.
"There's that smile." Harry grins. I roll my eyes and take a sip of the drink in my hand.
"You guys are my only friends." I say honestly.
"Aw, I feel special." Diane grins. I chuckle at her.
"Are you guys hungry?" Harry asks, picking at his nails before looking up at us. "Especially you, Rauline, you haven't eaten since you woke up."
"Yeah, it's lunch time now. Want something special?" Diane asks, standing up.
"Um, I don't know, I don't feel that hungry." I shake my head.
"Are you serious?" Diane says, quirking up an eyebrow.
I nod. "I better lose some weight anyway. Boss' orders." I say.
"What? No way." Harry snaps."You can't let Bob Sander control you."
"He said I need to get slimmer, so,...I've got to listen." I shrug.
The couple gives me a bored expression. Diane shakes her head. "Rauline, you are sexy as hell. Fuck that guy."
"I'd rather not." I mumble, making Harry almost spit out his drink and begin to laugh quietly.
Diane snorts, shaking her head again. "Do we have any lettuce Harry?"
"Um." He wipes some of the tea off of his chin with his sleeve. "Yeah, I think so."
"Okay, well, I'm going to make you a nice chicken salad." Diane says, turning to walk into the kitchen.
I relax in the seat, closing my eyes momentarily before opening them again. "So, what do you like to do for fun these days, Rauline?" Harry asks.
"Um," I sigh. "I'm not sure. I haven't done anything for fun in a long time."
Harry gasps. "What? Where did your inner child go?"
"I lost it in marriage." I mumble.
Harry purses his lips before growing a small smile. "Hey, can I give you an offer?"
I blink. "What do you mean?" I ask.
"I had no clue this was happening but now that I do...maybe I can talk to Louis."
"I don't want him to now I told you two."
"I'm not going to address the situation directly. I'm just going to ask if he's okay. We've been...or...we were friends throughout all of college, he can't just not talk to me."
"But he hasn't been, right?"
"No...but...um, well,... he can't ignore me. It would be a dickhead move."
I sigh, shaking my head. "You'd be surprised."
"You know what we should do?"
"What?"
"Watch Comedy Central. I aspire to be on that channel one day."
"Your jokes suck!" Diane yells from the kitchen.
"Nobody asked!" Harry yells back before looking at me again, rolling his eyes.
I laugh, genuinely laugh.
"Come on." He says, nodding his head towards the living room as he stands up, bringing his mug with him. I follow suit, bringing my own mug to join him in the living room.
He turns on the television and the channel he was looking for instantly shows up on the small screen. I chuckle lightly to myself. "How many days a week exactly do you watch this?"
"Everyday!" Diane yells from the kitchen again.
"Why are you eavesdropping, babe!" Harry questions, yelling back.
"Im not eavesdropping, your speaking too loud!" She yells back.
I live here for just a few hours and I am already in love with their relationship. I smile as I look at Harry to see him pick up the remote and turn up the volume. "But um, truth is...I do watch this everyday." He whispers, looking me in the eyes with wide emerald colored ones.
I cover my mouth to hide my smile and stifle my laugh and he rolls his eyes playfully. "Look, Comedy Central is great. My favorite comedian is Patrick Neil Harris."
"He's okay." I shrug.
"Kevin Hart is the best, though, even if he's not on this channel." Harry chuckles. I nod quickly, agreeing with him.
"Here is your dish, m'am." Diane says, placing the cold plate of salad on the coffee table and a plastic knife and fork along with it.
"Call me by my name, Diane." I laugh.
"I was just trying to be classy."
Harry starts to laugh. "You?"
Diane narrows her eyes at him. "Yes. Harold. Unlike you and your trashiness."
"I'm not trashy." He snaps.
Diane rolls her eyes. "Whatever."
I enjoy their playful banter. It was never playful with me and him. It was all simply real, which hurts to think about.
I bite into the piece of the chicken, tasting ice on it, making me retract the fork from my mouth quickly.
"You okay, Rauline?" Diane asks, eyebrows raising.
"She wasn't ready." Harry says.
I bite down on my bottom lip to not laugh at Harry's terrible attempt at Kevin Hart's quote and look at Diane. "There's ice on the chicken." I grin.
"Shit, I thought I warmed it up all the way through." She sighs, taking the plate as she shakes her head.
"Great job." Harry mumbles.
"I could do without anymore of your remarks today, Harry." Diane snaps crankily, walking away. Harry laughs quietly beside me.
And I can't help but feel envy, but covering it up with a small smile.
LATER
I close my eyes, listening to the soft piano playing in the background, taking in the strong smell of coffee beans and vanilla. I relax in the stimulating warmth that engulfs my being and warms my cold skin.
I try to block out every bad memory and I simply trying not to think too much of the past, but of what I could do for my future. I'm twenty-four, I sometimes feel as if I don't have a whole lot of time left, but if I really think about it. I do. And I have to use my time wisely to live my life the way I want it to.
I hear a sigh and a sudden warmth beside me. I open my eyes to see Diane as she looks up on stage, waiting for Harry to finally appear. I flicker my gaze to where she looks and watch as the lights dim, a spotlight appearing on stage.
"Diane?" I hear a familiar voice say. I look up to see him, looking the same as he did before I left just yesterday. And then he looks at me, looking taken aback, but then looks back at Diane again, seeming confused.
"Yeah, that's me. Harry invited you, right?"
He parts his lips and nods silently.
"Thanks for coming." Diane says, smiling. I feel a sudden anger wash over me. I tap her on the shoulder and she looks at me as Louis sits down slowly and stiffly in the seat.
"Why is he here?"
"Harry called him up earlier this evening. He wanted him to come."
"Now Harry invites Louis himself?" I whisper harshly. Diane sighs heavily and turns her body to me.
"Harry hasn't called Louis for a year now ever since your hus- ex husband..." She trails off after I give her a warning look. "Ever since your ex husband started to ignore Harry for a few months last year."
I look past her to see Louis staring at the stage.
"But, Harry called again for the first time in a long damn time and...well...he answered. I listened to the whole conversation on Harry's end and believe me, he was shocked. So he took the opportunity to invite him."
I close my eyes, rubbing at them in frusteration. "I left yesterday, Diane. Why now? It's too soon."
She frowns slowly looking away. "Your right and I'm sorry. We should've said something. Was the divorce that bad?" She asks me, still speaking in a hushed whisper.
I widen my eyes and nod my head quickly.
She gives me a sympathetic smile and turns back to look at Louis. I realized Diane has never actually met Louis. She looks back at me with a small smirk. "Well you were lucky to have him, he's handsome as hell."
I glare at the dark skinned woman and shake my head, looking at the stage.
"Hey, I'm sorry, Rauline." She whispers back. "Seriously."
I glance back at her, nodding and giving her a reassuring smile before looking away again, feeling tense. She's too good of a friend to feel mad at. I sigh shakily, feeling my hands begin to sweat.Hes sitting more than two feet away from me and I don't know how to feel.
I can barely focus on Harry's performance as he stands on stage, looking out at the crowd, a guitar in his hand, strumming slowly and carefully, singing in a beautiful raspy tone. My heart begins to ache, literally feeling as if it's hurting physically at the memories that rushed back in, especially since I looked into his blue eyes just a few minutes ago.
I feel his gaze burning into my profile, and I force myself to not look. I'm compelled, but I won't. But why the hell is he looking at me? He should be disgusted. I am.
But am I? Am I really or do I still love him?
I have self respect for myself so I am not going to give in just because I still have some feelings for him but his gaze is making me weak. Fuck.
My eyes quickly divert to his, making eye contact instantly. He locks his jaw before looking away quickly. I swallow thickly and look away as well.
When Harry is done, a few minutes later, he comes to the table, distracted before looking at the three of us who sit in an awkward silence. "Harry." Diane smiles, standing up with wide eyes.
I stand up as well just as Louis stands and walks over to Harry. He smiles at Diane, then looks to me, then looks at Louis, his smile faltering. He runs a hand through his long hair. "Hey guys, was I okay?" He asks awkwardly.
"You were incredible!" Diane exclaims.
"As always, Harry." I say, rolling my eyes. I feel Louis look at me again when I speak. Why does he keep looking at me? I shift uncomfortably, flickering my gaze to the floor.
"Good job, man." Louis says quietly, his voice making me wince. I furrow my eyebrows at the feeling, swallowing thickly.
"Thanks guys. And thanks for coming Louis." Harry smiles.
Louis nods silently.
This is the first time in a long time I see him in a plain t-shirt, jeans and vans. His hair is still slicked back. I haven't seen him looking like this since college.
I hear Diane sigh. "You guys want to sit around with some coffee?" Diane asks, smiling widely.
"Yeah sure."
"I've got to go."
Louis and I speak at the same time. We look at each other but look away quickly.
"I've got work tomorrow, early."
"Oh. Where do you work?" Harry asks, grinning.
"Tomlinson's Corporations." He says, frowning.
"You like it there?"
"Yeah." He nods. He then turns to Diane. "Nice meeting you by the way." He smiles, shaking the girl's hand.
"You too." Diane responds politely.
He turns to Harry and gives him an awkward handshake before turning to me and stretching his arm towards me as well.
I part my lips and take it slowly, wrapping my sweaty hand around his warm one. And we shake hands before he let's go and turns around to exit the cafe.
I let out a shaky breath and look at Diane who is patting Harry on the back before looking at me and smiling sadly.
