Five||
I look at myself in the mirror, wiping away some excess eyeliner before leaning away from the mirror with a heavy sigh.
"Are you ready ba- Rauline." I hear Louis say, quickly correcting himself to say my name in a duller tone. I look at him as he stands in the door way, wearing a blue dress shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, black dress pants and black dress shoes with his hair slicked back. He's also shaven.
I part my lips and nod. "Yeah, is Thomas, ready?"
"Yes." He nods, turning around.
"Okay." I sigh as he walks away, me exiting shortly after.
"Daddy! Daddy!" Thomas exclaims from the long hallway as I walk behind Louis. I smile as I see him running up to the man. "I'm three today, daddy." Thomas smiles, throwing his arms up in the air to have his father pick him up. Louis does.
"Oh yeah?" He says, chuckling. "I'm thought you were still two."
"No,I'm older. I'm three now. Did you know that mommy?"
"Yes I did, baby." I smile at him fondly.
"Where are we going first?" Thomas asks as we begin to walk down the stairs.
"I can't tell you, Tommy." Louis laughs.
"But daddy." He pouts before looking at me. "Can you tell me?"
"Nope." I grin, reaching out to smooth out a loose strand of his hair.
The new three year old sighs and rests his head on Louis' shoulder.
We get outside into the garage, me pressing the button to open it before climbing into Louis' car, him giving me the child to put in the back seat to strap into his car seat. For a few seconds, even without talking and him just simply giving me Thomas from his arms, I feel like this marriage is normal and it's okay. But then it hits me that, no, its not.
I notice I left my purse. "Louis."
"What?" He says quietly but harshly, not even looking at me.
"I need to get my purse really quickly." I say.
"Hurry up."
I get out of the car and rush back into the house to get my purse before rushing back to the car and getting in with a heavy sigh to hear Thomas singing a song on the radio but barely getting all the lyrics correct.
I open my bag as the car begins to move to get my phone. I see multiple messages from Bryce, making me furrow my eyebrows in confusion.
Bryce: the boss needs to you to come in really quickly.
Bryce: he wants to see you at one.
Bryce: You there? He said he just called you and your not picking up.
My heart leaps as I check my notifications, not bothering to look at the other messages from the boss' assistant, to see three missed calls from the restaurants number. Shit. I can't just ask Louis to go there now as we're driving to Thomas' celebration destination.
I notice we had just past it considering the road we're on.
I decide to text Bryce back.
Me: I'll be there.
"Hey Louis." I say quietly.
"Yeah?"
"Do you mind dropping me off at work really quickly? My boss needed me at one." I say, flickering my gaze to the clock to see its half past two. I swallow thickly and look at him. "I'm so sorry." I add.
"What's the address?"
"One three four on Pillars road."
He silently makes a U-turn on the road, gripping the steering wheel tightly. I can tell he's getting annoyed with me. I would be too. I don't usually fuck up with work like this, but I've never had a surprise meet up with my boss like this. It's a first and obviously unexpected since I don't actually work on Sundays.
"What's wrong?" He asks.
I look at him. "With what?"
"Why do you need to go to work?" He asks.
"My boss needs me."
He shifts in his seat before glancing at me with a slight glare in his eyes and furrowed brows. "Why would he need you? You don't even work today."
"I'm not sure either." I tell him.
He nods silently. I notice how tense he is, wondering why. Most likely because of me. "Hey um..." I trail off. "Your uncomfortable around me, aren't you?"
He glances at me again. "Why?" He asks. I take that response as a yes.
"You look uncomfortable."
He sighs softly. "'M nervous."
"For what?"
"Tonight."
"With your parents?"
He nods silently.
I bite my tongue. I have a war within my mind, wondering if I should comfort him or not. I want to. I want to tell him it will be okay. But, no, we aren't like that anymore. We never will be like that again. So I don't say anything, looking out the windshield silently as he pulls into the complex my work is before parking.
I get up quickly and rush to go inside of the restaurant. My heart is racing at the anticipation of what my boss needs and the impact of his potential anger.
I near his door seeing Bryce in the kitchen, him giving me a sympathetic smile, making me feel even more nervous than I already am. I sigh shakily, grabbing the doorknob to the office before opening the door and walking inside, seeing the bald head of the man sitting behind the desk.
"Mr.Sander, you wanted to see me." I say.
"Yes, an hour ago actually." He says, without look up. But then he does look up, giving me an unimpressed expression.
"I apologize. It's my son's birthday today. We were celebrating and-"
"No excuses." He says, shaking his head. "I need to talk to you about an important matter that might just ruin my business." He says.
I purse my lips and nod quietly.
He sighs heavily, running a hand down his face before standing up. "I don't want to embarrass you, but,..." He trails off, walking around his desk to lean against it. "How do I put this..." He trails off again.
I play with my fingers anxiously, waiting for him to fire me already.
"Your getting a little on the bigger side, Rauline." He says.
I feel my face drop, a blush rushing my cheeks at his words.
"Working here, you need to be at least, a little slimmer." He says. The humiliation rises in my body, making me want to vomit and pass out on the spot. "Do you know what I mean, Rauline?"
I blink, nodding slowly.
"As a matter of fact, let me get Katie in here, she is a perfect example." He says, walking past me to get another waitress I have befriended. I suck in a breath turning around quickly to look at him.
"I know what Katie looks like, sir. And...I understand. I'll work on it." I tell him.
He looks back at me.
"Seriously, I will." I force a smile on my lips.
The bald headed man nods and opens the door for me. "I'll see you on Monday then, Rauline, with a new diet plan."
I internally flinch at his words, not responding, but instead I rush out of the office and outside again to see the car waiting for me.
I look up at the sky to not get my makeup to run before opening the car door, making Louis look at me as I sit inside.
He silently drives off as I look out my window, the words replaying in my head, the humiliation I felt increasing to an overwhelming level. I know I've been getting fat. And it's obviously showing to everyone I know. Even Louis.
"So what did he want?" Louis asks.
I sigh. "He was telling me some tips."
"On what?"
I look at him. "Your being nosey."
"I'm not. I'm just-" He cuts himself off, closing his mouth tightly before sighing and staying silent.
I look out the window again, staying silent myself.
I look behind me, smiling slightly at the quiet coos coming from the back of the car as the little boy plays with his toys.
LATER
"Where are we going now?" Thomas asks. I look at Louis.
"We're going to see Grandpa and Grandma." He says in a gentle voice.
"I'm tired." The little boy sighs.
"You can sleep in your stroller, baby." I tell him, turning in my seat to look at him.
"Okay." He sighs tiredly.
I watch as Louis drives into an Olive Garden parking lot, the moon upon us now with the clouds covering the sun. So it's windy and cold outside.
He parks in a space slowly and stops before getting out the car quickly. I follow him and get the little both from the back as Louis gets his stroller from the trunk and sets it up on the ground. I then place the boy inside and buckle him up, letting him rest his tired eyes, discretely wishing I could do that at this moment instead of staying awake.
In silence, we walk inside. Louis walks past the check in and straight into the most likely, unnecessarily expensive restaurant, considering the atmosphere and nice decorations that adorn the area. Louis' parents are rich, which means he will continue to be rich by working in his father's business, until eventually the CEO position will be passed to Thomas. But weirdly enough, Louis isn't even CEO anymore. He got demoted, which I don't really understand why or how?
Last time I heard, Louis agreed with his father for almost everything. And the night he told me I was so fed up I couldn't even think as to how the hell he could've gotten demoted. This makes me wonder who CEO is now.
"Hi mum." I hear him say, breaking me out of my thoughts. I watch as he hugs his mother before turning to his father and hugging him as well with a mumble of a "Hi father".
I go into hug his parents as well with happy smiles and they just admire Thomas, seeing him sleeping peacefully, before the conversation is turned back to us.
"So, how is the marriage going?" Louis' mother asks, making my eyes widen and for Louis to suddenly choke on his water. I tap his back as he covers his mouth, bringing a napkin up to his lips.
He clears his throat, sitting up straight quickly to recompose himself. "It's great actually." He smiles, snaking his arm around my shoulders. I force myself to not flinch at the contact, gripping the napkin on my lap tightly at the fakeness radiating off of him.
"Well, I'm glad, because we're all family here and all so I'm just going come right out and say something to Louis specifically." His father says, looking serious as he clasps his hand together.
Louis' fingers dig into my shoulder as he tenses, making me look at him.
"I don't think that's a good idea." Louis says, shaking his head, taking his arm from around me and back to his side.
"Louis." His mother scolds.
"I mean, Rauline was going to know sometime anyway, right?"
He doesn't respond and now,I'm actually curious to know what's going on.
"So, as everyone knows Louis got demoted because he was being defiant."
"Defiant." Louis chuckles, shaking his head. "I wasn't being defiant, father. I'm not a teenager going through a damn phase. I'm a man that has been expressing myself to you since a young age, and I still continue to express myself but you don't listen."
"Let your father speak, Louis." His mother snaps at him.
"Defiant is the word Louis." His father retorts, glaring at him. "And I don't appreciate that." He says, shaking his head. "I don't appreciate it so much I'm considering on firing you if you don't cease your inappropriate defiance."
I stay frozen, uncomfortable in the middle of this.
Louis stands up with a heavy sigh. "Well excuse me," He says before turning around and walking away from table.
I purse my lips as they watch him. I never liked his parents so I don't necessarily want to sit with them feeling so uncomfortable either.
"I hope he'll understand soon." His father sighs.
But I have to disagree with his father. First of all, it wasn't right to do this in a public setting, and second, he needs to listen to what his son wants, whatever it is that Louis is pleading for to be recognized.
"I should go check on him." I say hesitantly before standing up quickly to walk towards the entrance, where the bathrooms were, to see him not in the bathroom at all but outside, sitting on a bench.
I sigh heavily and walk outside before tapping his shoulder, making him flinch and snap his gaze to me. "What?" He spits.
"What's your problem?"
"You."
I clench my jaw, glaring at him. "No, I mean, overall, what the hell is going on?" I ask him. That's literally what I've been wanting to know since day one of the first day we had a huge ass fight about why he had come home so late, it was the biggest fight we ever had throughout the time span of our relationship. But I didn't think it would effect it this badly.
I realize he hasn't answered, making me look at him again. "Louis?" I say, noticing a layer of sweat on his forehead as he knaws on his bottom lip.
He takes a deep breath in then out before standing up quickly and looking at me. "I'm-" He stops, pausing to glide his sleeve across his forehead. His breathing begins to get quicker and more audible. I furrow my brows in confusion, trying to look into his eyes but he refuses to look at me. "Go away, Rauline!" He suddenly yells. "Just- just go, please!"
I flinch, backing away from him. "Louis." I whisper, startled. But I regain my confidence quickly. "What the hell is your problem?" I snap at him.
"I don't want you. I don't need you. I don't even know why the hell you came out here." He spits at me, taking a menacing step towards me.
"Because I'm trying to play the act as your happy wife!" I yell. He doesn't respond, turning around and running his hands through his hair. "You know what Louis." I sigh shakily, still hot with anger. "I'll leave tonight." I tell him. "I can't take another minute of this, money or not." I say.
"I feel the same way!" He yells, turning around again, cheeks flushed and irises dark.
"Okay." I nod. "So we're going to go in there, tell your parents we're not married and then we're going to leave so I can pack up my stuff and get out of your life."
"No." Louis snaps. "We aren't going to tell them we're not married."
"What?" I snap.
"We can't tell them that we're having a divorce."
"Why?" I snap again, scorning his idiotic words.
"Because, my father will just know that I fucked up again. I fucked up another relationship, another chance to not be alone like he said I always would be." Louis says, voice shaky, but still stern. I glare at him.
"Selfish. Louis, that's selfish." I snap.
"So what?" He chuckles bitterly. "You don't care about me, I don't give a shit about you, let's just pretend but move on at the same time."
I purse my lips. "No. I'm telling them." I snap, turning around quickly and rushing into the restaurant.
When I make it to the table, Louis isn't far behind me, grabbing my hand, making me turn around to look at him. I snatch my hand away and turn to his parents that look stuck in a conversation.
"Mr and Mrs Tomlinson." I say, Louis then standing next to me, his breathing still heavy. I look at him to see him looking at the floor.
"Louis baby, are you okay?" His mother says.
He looks up, eyes now a lighter blue. He doesn't respond, but looks at me.
"Louis and I are having a divorce." I say, looking away from him and back to is parents.
They blink. His mother looks at his father and Louis' father looks at him, then at me, then back at him. "Congratulations Louis, you've messed up yet another thing in your life."
I cross my arms over my chest and look at Louis who looks as if he may have a heart attack on the spot.
I bite down on my bottom lip and look down before grabbing the stroller, wondering if Louis is going to say anything.
"I'll talk to you later, father and mother." He says before turning around and leaving the table. I smile at them politely before following him out of the restuarant.
We are silent for the rest of the evening. The car ride even has more tension than usual.
Even while I'm packing Louis is silent, on his computer, doing extra work for his job.
I know I don't have to say goodbye. Because I know he doesn't care.
"Hey, Louis." I say.
He doesn't respond, obviously.
"It was only right for your parents to know." I tell him.
No response.
"And if your giving me a silent treatment, that's really immature." I continue.
No response.
"But, I'm also sorry." I say, sighing sofly. "For embarrassing you."
"You didn't embarrass me. Just..." He trails off, turning around to look at me. His voice is scarily calm, making me swallow thickly. His blue eyes are guarded and his lips are in a straight line. "Leave." He finally says.
I nod. "Just, one more question." I say.
He raises his eyebrows.
"Did you ever even love me, like I loved you?"
He smiles slightly. "No." Is his response.
So then I leave, kissing my sleeping child on the bed, then I walk out of the house, walking tall and strong and happy, knowing, he was just never worth it.
