.The fine art of bullshit.
After Luther left, Five wrote a note to my attackers, Hazel and Cha Cha.
After he sent it off, we grabbed Luther before we got into the car and headed towards the meet up spot to give them their 'briefcase'.
We sit in silence for a while, before Five breaks it. "You know, I never enjoyed it."
"What?" asks Luther, not knowing what Five is talking about.
"The killing." says Five. "I mean, I was... I was good at my work, and I... I took pride in it. But it never gave me pleasure."
"I think it was all those years alone. Solitude can do funny things to the mind." says Five, turning back towards me.
"Yeah, well, you were gone for such a long time. Both of you were." Luther says, acknowledging my presence. "I only spent four years on the moon, but that was more than enough. It's the being alone that breaks you. How about you Marah?"
"I was never really alone. I was always running from something." I say, remembering my time in Hell. "It was either the devil, or the demons who tortured me, or even the souls that were trapped there who were trying to possess me so that they could get back to the land of the living."
There's silence after I speak. I look out the window at the open fields around us. It's calming, knowing there's a place that's this calm. Luther breaks the silence this time.
"You think they'll buy it?" Luther asks, looking at the 'briefcase' that we put a bunch of metal in to make it heavier.
"Well, what I do know is that they're desperate." says Five, glancing at the briefcase and then back at the road in front of us. "It's like a cop losing his gun. If the Commission finds out, they'll be in deep shit. Oh, not to mention the fact that they'll be stuck here until they get it back."
"Well, I should hold onto it." Luther states, putting his hand on the briefcase.
"Hm?" questions Five.
"In case they make a move on you." Luther says, going back into his Number One role.
"Okay, Luther, but be careful." Five starts, giving a speech as he's lived over fifty years now. "I mean, I've... I've lived a long life, but... you're still a young man. You got your whole life ahead of you. Don't waste it."
Luther looks at his like he's crazy. I move closer to Five and squeeze his hand, as I hear a car approaching. We all look out the car to see a blue car drive past us and park down the street, with Hazel and Cha Cha stepping out from the vehicle.
"Hm... Here we go." says Five, getting out of the car and opening the door for me as well.
I look at Marah before walking over to Luther.
"If this all goes sideways," I whisper to Luther, looking at Rosie as I speak. "do me a favor and tell Marah that I'm sorry."
I give Rosie's hand one last squeeze, before walking away to Hazel and Cha Cha. Knowing what I'm about to do.
"Are the masks really necessary?" I ask, knowing we've all seen what they look like.
"So, where is it kid?" asks Cha Cha, getting right to the point.
"Wow, that's how you're gonna start." I say, trying not to lose my cool knowing she's the one who hurt my Rosie. "You know, we can get right back in our car and call it a day."
Cha Cha and Hazel lift up their guns towards me, in a more threatening manner. I hear Luther take a half step closer, and I can smell the burnt smoky smell coming from Rosie, knowing she's ready to burn one of them, or both of them.
"You won't make it even half way there." says Cha Cha, threatening me even with the protection of Rosie and Luther.
"Maybe." I say, knowing that they wouldn't kill me until after they get their briefcase. "But as I'm sure you found out in your previous foray, my brother is not your average giant. And my girl-" I stop myself. 'what is she to me?' I think to myself. Shaking me out of my thoughts, I continue with my threats. "My sister is not your normal super hero."
"He's right." says Hazel, turning towards Cha Cha. He looks at me for a second longer having caught my slip up. "You dropped a chandelier on him, got right back up. And she never minded your torture. Just healed."
"By the time you took him out, he'd smash your precious briefcase to a pulp and she'd burn it." I say, smirking.
"Probably us too, right?" asks Hazel, lowering his gun. "So, how do we help each other out?"
"I need you to get in contact with your superior," I say, knowing i'm about to leave Marah behind again. "so I can have a chat with her. Face-to-face."
"About what?" asks Cha Cha.
"Well, I don't believe that's any of your concern." I say smugly.
"Just don't tell her about the briefcase." says Cha Cha, as she goes and dials the number.
"Fair enough." I say, looking back at Luther and Marah, as the phone rings.
After the call, I walk back over to Luther and Marah. I grab Marah's hand, and stand against the car next to Luther. "What happens now?" asks Luther.
"Now, we wait." I say, bringing Marah closer.
A few minutes later, we hear "The ride of the Valkyries" coming from the distance. We all look down the road, to see an ice cream truck coming towards us. It passes us and Klaus waves out the window but they don't stop. They keep going for Cha Cha and Hazel.
"Is that her?" asks Luther.
"What the hell is he doing here?" I seethe.
"It's a set up!" I hear Cha Cha yell, before both her and Hazel start shooting at the moving truck.
Suddenly, like magic, time freezes everything around me. I look at Marah, only to see that she's smiling at what Klaus did. I smile, before walking out from under Luther's arm to meet with The Handler.
"Neat trick, isn't it?" asks the Handler. "Hello, Five. You look good, all things considered."
"It's good to see you again. Feels like we met just yesterday." the Handler says, trying to get a reaction out of me. "Course, you were a little bit older then. Congratulations on the age regression, by the way. Very clever. Threw us all off the scent."
I throw my arms out to add effect. "Ah, well, I wish I could take credit. I just miscalculated the time dilation projections, and... well, you know. Here I am."
"You realize your efforts are futile. So why don't you tell me what you really want? Besides that firery red head over there." she says, motioning towards Marah, who's behind Luther.
"Don't talk about her." I growl out. "I want you to put a stop to it."
"You realize what you're asking for is next to impossible, even for me." says the Handler, moving the briefcase back in front of her. "What's meant to be is meant to be. That's our raison d'Aatre."
I pull out one of dad's guns, which I nicked from his office. "Yeah? Well how about survival as a raison?"
"I'll just be replaced." says the Handler calmly. "I'm but a... small cog in a machine."
"This fantasy you've been nurturing about summoning up your family to stop the apocalypse... is just that. A fantasy." she says, grinning like the chesire cat. "I must say, though, we're all quite impressed with your initiative, you... stick-to-itiveness, really quite... quite something."
"Which is why we want to offer you a new position back at the Commission," says the Handler, surprising me. "...in management."
I chuckle, "Sorry, what's that now?"
She walks closer to me as she speaks. "Come back to work for us again. You know it's where you belong."
"Well, that didn't work out too well last time." I mention, reminding her of the last time I worked there.
"But you wouldn't be in the correction division any longer." she says, coming ever closer to me. "I'm talking about... the home office. You'd have the best health and pension, and an end to all this ceaseless travel. You're a distinguished professional in... schoolboy shorts."
"We have the technology to reverse the process. I mean, you... you can't be happy like this." says the Handler.
"I'm not looking for happy." I say, as I look at Marah's smiling face.
"We're all looking for happy." says the Handler, having seen where I was looking. "We can make that happen. We can make you...yourself again."
I look around me at my family. "And what about my family?" I ask.
"What about them?" asks the Handler, confused.
"I want them to survive." I seethe.
"All of them?" asks the Handler, looking at all of my siblings and Marah. Lingering on Marah a little longer than the others.
"Yes, all of them." I say, getting pissed off with her stalling.
"Well... I'll see what I can do." she says, putting her pipe in her mouth and moving the briefcase to one of her hands and holding out the other hand. "Do we have a deal?"
"Two things." I say, moving towards Hazel's gun and taking it apart and throwing the pieces in different directions. I notice a bullet that was heading straight towards Marah, I move it so that it misses her. I walk back over to the Handler. "Unfreeze Marah. I want to talk to her before we go."
The Handler looks at her before giving in. "Fine. But you get two minutes."
I walk over to Marah to see her looking around at all the people frozen around us. "Five?" Marah says, noticing me walking towards her. "What's happening?"
"I've made a deal to fix things." I say. "But I need to leave so that I can do that."
"You're leaving me again." she states. I grab her hand. "It's fine, go save the world, i'll be here. I'll keep everyone alive."
"I'm sorry." I apologize, not wanting to leave. "I..."
"I know." says Marah, giving me a kiss of the cheek before she freezes up again.
I walk back towards the Handler and grab her hand. We both get pulled back to the Commission, while everyone else unfreezes.
