PART ONE: CAT

"Love's gentle spring, doth always fresh remain."

- William Shakespeare

Cat had tried for a long time to ignore the little flutter in her chest every time she was around her best friend. But she could no longer deny the way her heart swelled every time the frizzy-haired girl smiled at her or how Cat found herself glancing at her lips when they were alone.

It was hard to love someone so much and know you could not have them.

Especially when that person was someone like Abilene.

They both had been sent to the monastery to train with Master Lloyd as the next generation of elemental masters. At first, they barely looked at each other. The green ninja had then paired them all up to spar and had placed the two young women together. Suddenly, nothing else seemed to matter anymore. Abilene became everything to her.

The master of nature was a quiet soul. She and her father, Bolobo, worked as soldiers protecting the small villages along the edges of ninjago. Abilene was socially awkward, the burly girl often came off as aloof and intimidating but Cat had soon realized how wrong that assumption was.

Abilene was kind and caring. She loved plants and animals alike, always being the one to tend to the monastery gardens or feed the hyperactive lightning chicken. Cat had grown to love the way Abilene silently showed how she felt, the girl had few words and rarely talked, which annoyed most. Cat had thought she was mute until one day she quietly asked her to pass the salad over. Even though Abilene didn't talk much and seemed to have a mask of indifference upon her face she did little things to show her support. Cat had impulsively shaved half her hair off because the model business she worked for wanted her to change into a "more attractive form". Lloyd was furious because he didn't want Camille yelling at him but Abilene just quietly sent her some links to ways to care for the new 'doo.

Abilene loved all the forms she shapeshifted into, finding her powers entrancing, but the master of nature always seemed to love her original form the best. That's when Cat knew she was falling for her, and falling hard. Unfortunately, Abilene had no interest in getting into a relationship. Her heart was bruised and broken. A melancholy look on her face whenever she talked about her old girlfriend, she had died during one of the attacks on their village and Abilene couldn't save her.

"If you don't tell her now you'll lose your chance," Iwin Pale told Cat. "Then you'll spend your whole life regretting it."

Cat glared at the boy with narrowed eyes. "I can't put her in that position right now. I don't want to make her if uncomfortable. I'll just have to... wait some more."

Iwin snorted. "You're never patient."

"Why did I decide to talk to you again?"

"Because the only other person you could ask for advice from is the girl you're in love with." Iwin reminded her.

Cat chewed on her lip as she thought. Though Abilene wasn't too good at words she was always a good ear, the advice she gave wasn't half bad for someone who mostly kept their mouth shut.

"Maybe that's a good idea," Cat murmured aloud.

"What?" Iwin looked at her like she was crazy. "That's a terrible idea!"

"Thanks, Iwin!" Cat stood and patted him on the shoulder. "I'll be sure you come to you if it goes badly."

Iwin sputtered but the violet-haired young woman had already left for the monastery building. It was late at night and most of the group was in bed. Cat slipped quietly down the hall and knocked softly on Abilene's door.

There was a click as the lock opened and Cat knew she could enter. Cat pushed through the door and looked to where Abilene was reading on her bed. The other girl looked up questioningly when Cat entered.

"Hey, Leena." The nickname rolled off her tongue smoothly, masking her nerves as Cat sat down beside her.

Abilene gave her an amused look and nodded for her to say what she needed to.

"Uh..." Cat hesitated. She was a good actress and a pretty good liar but talking to her crush about her crush was foreign territory. It was like her tongue had been tied into a knot. "So... Iwin was talking to me about a crush he had."

Abilene tilted her head and pointed at the picture of the group. Her nail grazing over the face of one of their teammates.

"Yeah- wait, he has a crush on Aavi?" Abilene scrunched her brow in confusion. Cat quickly back-pedalled.

"I mean- of course, he does! It was so obvious! Anyways, so Aavi apparently had a bad break-up with someone but Iwin wanted to tell her that he... really likes her. Iwin isn't sure what to do because he doesn't want to cross a line and make her uncomfortable. Because if he did that he would never forgive himself."

Cat went quiet for a moment. "And he doesn't know what to do."

Abilene was silent, looking thoughtful. Her deep brown eyes unreadable. "Does Iwin know if Aavi is in the right place at the moment?"

Cat swallowed hard. "Uh... I don't know."

Abilene held her gaze and never broke her stare. "Then Iwin should find out."

authors note****

So this one was inspired by Reinaeiry's original song Intertwined. I'm not sure what fandom, show, or book it is for but I really love the song and it features one of my singers Annapantsu! It's such a sweet, calm, pretty song and I recommend listening to it!

I know there isn't anything spring here but I'm using Abilene as the master of nature as an excuse 'cause she's totally spring-like.

Cat is the master of form, daughter of Camille. I had fun creating her character! Her name comes from the phrase "copy-cat". Here is a drawing I drew of her! It was fun transferring Camille's design and outfit into a new character. I changed it up of course, but I hope there are still echoes of Camille's clothing.

I'm currently working on Abilene's drawing and hopefully, I can post it in the next part!

Also, since I'm so behind on these stories I may be splitting this into two parts just so I can kill two birds with one stone.

Not literally.

I like birds.
