- chapter 3 -
"Hmm." Felix entered with a nod before handing the bags to Hyunjin to take off his shoes, jacket and hoodie. "Jisung texted it to me earlier," he admitted, clearing his throat.
"Of course he did." And he sounded so unselfconsciously and normal as ever, as he turned his back on Felix at that and walked into the kitchen that the younger man's breath hitched. Wasn't he angry or sad? The boy for whom he had risked everything had just broken up with him. Shouldn't he at least cry? Scream? Any kind of reaction but this...
Instead, he puts some of the beer in the fridge and two on the kitchen island before reaching for chopsticks. A situation Felix had seen hundreds of times before, and yet this time it felt different. Hyunjin's gaze was dull, his shoulders sagged and his movements were slow and seemed ticked off - he was sad and angry after all, only he tried to cover it up, what a Hyunjin-like reaction.
Sighing, Felix averted his gaze from him and quietly arranged the jajangmyeon for dinner, setting the bowls on the countertop of the kitchen island and adjusting the bar stools.
"How was your day?", Hyunjin asked him when they finally started to eat, but the forced small talk didn't last long and soon they were slurping noodles and drinking beer in silence. The only thing that broke the silence was soft music coming from one of the other rooms. But it was so subliminal that it could not break the tension between them. Hyunjin pretended not to be bothered by it, but on closer look, Felix could see that he was not doing well at all.
"After the breakup mess with Jihe back then, I thought you were more the dramatic type after a breakup," he finally couldn't hold back anymore.
And Hyunjin paused in mid-drink, staring at him over the beer can. The silver-haired cleared his throat before uncomfortably running his hand through his hair under the latter's gaze. "Well... you know, you're more the protective and almost possessive type. Geez, you almost killed people with your glares when people just looked at Jihe or then Jisung a bit odd. But right now you're surprisingly calm, or rather, un-calmingly calm."
The blond-haired man finally tilted his head further back and emptied the remaining drink in one go. Unable to avoid it, Felix's gaze lingered on Hyunjin's Adam's apple and how it moved with each successive sip.
Only when the blond slammed the empty can onto the tabletop with a dull clang did the younger man blink a few times to pull himself away from the view and shove the last of the noodles into his mouth. But the older man continued to stare impassively at the shiny label of the can and remained silent for so long that Felix was already considering changing the subject.
"Jisung... he has someone new."
Felix's eyes widened in shock and his chopsticks fell into the empty bowl. Bewildered, he stared at him.
"What?!"
Hyunjin ran his hands through his hair restlessly, still avoiding eye contact with him. "Fuck- I need more alcohol for this." He got up from the counter, picked up two shot glasses and a way-too-expensive-looking Genshu bottle, and poured them.
After briefly toasting the glasses together and finally drinking, Hyunjin resumed speaking after a few more glasses. "It was just this afternoon.", he licked his lips briefly before biting down on his lower one, "He came to my apartment, even though we had plans to meet somewhere completely different... Actually we- We wanted to move together and were going to look for an apartment today."
"Dude, that's...", Felix drew in a sharp breath, for the life of him he didn't know what to say to that, "Fucked up.... like that's hard."
"Yes...," Hyunjin let his fingers brush over his chapped lower lip as he looked past Felix out the huge windows. "He apologized for it almost at the same moment and said it wasn't my fault."
"Is that supposed to make it better?" the silver-haired one couldn't help the sarcastic undertone. Because no matter how much he liked Jisung, the situation was absolutely fucked up.
"Probably." Laughed Hyunjin briefly and completely mirthlessly. His voice sounded rough and dead, "But no, it doesn't. Not the slightest bit. Besides, I know very well that it wasn't my fault. After all, I didn't get myself a new guy or gave my heart to the next best chick. "
He sounded almost hateful as he blurted out the last sentence, but Felix could see that he was just hurt and crushed. Sighing, he poured them each another glass and towards the end of the bottle, Hyunjin eventually told the rest of the story.
The fact that Jisung had come to his apartment far before the agreed time had been strange enough. But when he sat down with him on the couch to discuss something with him, Hyunjin's stomach had already twisted in every possible direction. Jisung had been constantly running his fingers through his hair, chewing on his lip, and his fingers had been trying to hold something the whole time. Out of watery eyes he had then looked at him before everything burst out of him.
"Fuck. I've loved him for so long that I don't even really know how to stop so suddenly. Just like that, without any warning." Hyunjin interrupted himself and Felix could feel the pain pushing its way into his heart as well.
The one who had stolen Jisung's heart without even knowing it was Lee Minho.
