FLYNN: Good morning, Miss Rivera. Thank you for coming in. I'm Dr. Daniel Flynn, head of the Governance's Sociology Division, and your fifteen minute Preliminary Guidance Session will commence now. Like in your pre-MOLT log, it is imperative that you hide nothing from us today, as the transcription of our conversation will be studied vigorously at a later date by Governance psychoanalysts.
You may be wondering why the Governance requested me to speak to you in person instead of sending a representative: I wanted you to know that this does not in any way reflect negatively on your behavior or the content of your first daily log entry. On the contrary, the entry was quite impressive. You made us aware of your thoughts and feelings without making an effort to suppress your natural personality. The Governance will benefit greatly from the information.
RIVERA: Thank you, Dr. Flynn, and I'm glad I could help.
FLYNN: So, is there any way the Governance could ease your concerns about this process? Any questions you have that weren't answered in school?
RIVERA: Yes, a lot, actually. I heard that there was...pain involved.
FLYNN: Ah, yes. That is a common concern for Birth MOLTs, but the truth is, although the process is certainly not a comfortable one, the level of pain you will experience never surpasses the Governance's accepted threshold of human agony. The organ transplants are performed under anesthesia, so you won't feel a thing. Your new skin, however, will be tender for a few days as it is gradually accepted by your body. That is why the Governance has granted you a week's period of rest between the procedure and your first day of Training.
RIVERA: Thank you. It's very gracious of the Governance to provide the MOLT free of charge.
FLYNN: Oh, it comes out of your taxes, Miss Rivera. It's important to keep the fact that nothing is free in the back of your head, especially if you're going to be working for the Governance. Part of the driving force behind the Fall was our ancestors' desire to get everything for free. Believing that they could get what they wanted in life through criminal methods, they shunned their governments and went after their own selfish ends. A government that is not trusted by its people serves no purpose. That is why we are all instructed so often to trust in the Governance, to endure not just under the Governance but with it. We no longer have the power over our planet to stand divided and still stand. Our only choice is to stay together.
RIVERA: Yes, I understand. It's good that we're learning from our previous mistakes, for once, but it's sad that it took a global catastrophe to convince us to do so. Speaking of issues, you have evidently read my log, you must've learned how...alienated I feel in my family and community as the only Birth MOLT for miles around. Do you, as a sociologist, believe that the MOLT could or would truly change that?
FLYNN: Well, that's the question, isn't it? The social isolation that comes with being a natural human in a society of MOLTs is part of the reason the Governance has such strict restrictions on Childbearing Permits. It's important that only parents who can effectively work through those issues with their children are entrusted with our most vulnerable citizens, the Birth MOLTs. This policy was put in place because our leaders do believe that the process of being integrated into society as a MOLT is a slow one, and does not happen the second one steps out of the operating room with a new body and a fresh start. You are a promising Birth MOLT, and I am almost certain you will be integrated with the help of your MOLT. Do not, however, expect it to happen overnight.
RIVERA: Of course. I won't be unreasonable about it. Now, my biggest question isn't really related to my MOLT in particular, but just out of curiosity, how's the MOLT actually done so many times while maintaining post-Fall sustainability standards? You can't just have an infinite supply of organs and skin lying around.
FLYNN: I apologize, Miss Rivera, but that information cannot be divulged to a civilian This is for your own protection.
RIVERA: It was just a simple question, Dr. Flynn. I don't see how I could hurt myself by-
FLYNN: Nature is not your only enemy, Miss Rivera. We have Fallen, but we are still human. Those who want to undermine the Governance are selfish, savage beings. They will do anything to you for any information you might possess...they will misuse the MOLT.
RIVERA: Wait, people who want to undermine the Governance!? I thought we were done with wars and rebellions! I thought we were over that!
FLYNN: I have already said too much. I'm afraid if you ask any more questions, Miss Rivera, I will have to flag this session for review by the Chancellor.
RIVERA: Chancellor? What Chancellor? I thought the Governance was all about a level playing field, and that no one ruled anyone else. I know you don't like what I'm saying, but to hide my thoughts would be going against the Governance's code of honesty.
FLYNN: The Chancellor gets no public recognition for what she does. Giving politicians too much of the global limelight led to the Fall Wars, after all. She has learned from the past, just as the rest of us have, but she is the leader of the Governance, and will be informed of this flagged session.
RIVERA: What? You can't punish me for following your code? This is the kind of stuff pre-Fall governments did! The Governance is better than this!
FLYNN: I'm afraid our time together is over, Miss Rivera. The session will now conclude.
RIVERA: But Dr. Flynn, I-
FLYNN: Goodbye.
