Night Life.

"Did you have a decent time at work?" Kyo's voice is almost a whisper as she holds her phone to her ear, her brown orbs focused on her shubunkins, they aren't moving much but they never do during the night, likely because they're sleeping.

The tank's night-time light gives their scales such a gorgeous glow.

"It was stressful, I had to perform a heart transplant on a kid." She had told Law to call her when he got home to ensure he got there safely, he had to work until late and she finds herself growing worried for him when he has late shifts, mainly due to him driving while tired.

"And? Why did it stress you so much?" His tone sounded off, like he was holding something back. She may not be able to read his eyes too well but his voice is a different matter.

A soft sigh sounding in her ear, followed by some shuffling and the subtle jingle of Bepo's collar, she can just about picture the raven sat on his couch at home with his canine companion.

The image makes her miss him despite the fact that he's speaking to her right now, though that could be because she's sensing that something is off.

"She...looked a little like Lami in the eyes, it added to the pressure but the surgery was a success in the end." The way he speaks tugs on her heartstrings, he tries to sound nonchalant but there's a hint of sadness behind his tone, she begins to wonder if he has had these kinds of issues before.

When he's working on children, do they often remind him of his sister? Did Lotte remind him of her at one point, is that why they have a sibling-like bond? And what about his parents? Does he see people who remind him of them? She can only imagine.

"That sounds like a lot of stress to work through...but you succeeded and that girl will likely never forget you, you're no longer just a doctor to her, you're now the man who saved her life." Her words draw a short hum from the surgeon's lips, it's usually the gentle little sound he makes just before he does his usual smile, or smirk in Law's case.

It's somewhat nice to think she can draw such a reaction from him during a subject as tough as this, she wasn't sure whether or not she was saying the correct thing, she has only ever lost one person to death and it wasn't a very nice person - she has no idea what pain the man would be feeling, not truly.

"How was your day, Kyo-ya?" He's trying to change the subject, perhaps it's a coping mechanism for him.

From her experience with coping mechanisms, they're best to be respected, fighting against them or having other people fight against them can be more traumatic than helpful.

So she decides to play along.

"It was slow for the most part, Drake was out transporting The Flying Scotsman and we had no customers apart from Teach trying to strike a deal with John Smith's gun so, I spent most of my time in the office."

"...The flying what?" For once, Trafalgar Law sounds completely bewildered, the shift in his voice certainly brings a smirk to Kyo's lips as she sits herself down on the edge of her bed, her eyes scanning the photos on her wall as she elaborates.

"It's a train, one of the most famous in the world, apparently." She doesn't miss the small hum of acknowledgement from the doctor, her hand finally reaching under her bed and grabbing the box full of photos that she had left there. "I don't believe we have much room for it in our museum but Pa was insistent on buying it if it was legitimate so, we've bought it.

"Huh? Why would he buy it if he can't use it?"

"My thoughts exactly, Trafalgar." She uses her free hand to sift through the photographs, finally taking the one of her and Law sitting together at the party and observing their expressions once again, she looked so unwell back then - it's only now that she's healthier that she really sees it.

But regardless of how bad she looks, it still makes her smile, it was a turning point for her and she didn't even know it.

"And John Smith, why does that name sound so familiar?"

"Hm? I don't know, did you watch Pocahontas as a child~?" She softly teases, the complete silence that follows her question only draws a wicked giggle from her lips as her shoulder rises, pinning the phone to her ear whilst she sticks the photograph to her wall. "Pwahahaha~! You never cease to amaze me, Trafalgar~!"

"Lot-ya watched it, not me."

"Oh, I'm sure." She must admit, heckling this man will never get old. Finally grabbing her phone once again when the image is up with the others, a small smile tugging on her lips as her gaze returns to the box, lazily going through the rest of the photos as she continues. "Just don't be fooled by the Disney version, Mr. Smith was...well, not very kind. Nobody was back then."

"That's humans, Kyo-ya. People aren't nice."

"Hmph." She can't argue with that despite wishing she could.

Though a sudden noise immediately distracts the girl upon catching her ear, it's a very loud and long hoot from an owl, possibly a mating call. It's extremely rare to hear them within the city so it had made her jump a little, a soft gasp escaping her lips as her gaze shoots toward the window, it seems Law caught onto her slight shift in demeanour over the phone also.

His voice falling serious all of a sudden as a small shuffle sounds on the other end of the line. "Kyo-ya?"

"Hm? Yes, sorry, there was an owl outside..." She doesn't miss the subtle snicker from the doctors lips just before he lets out a sigh of relief, though she can practically feel him smirking still. "And before you ask; No, I am not frightened! I just wasn't expecting the stupid thing to hoot so close to my window!"

Of course, this little outburst of hers just makes the raven quietly chuckle to himself again. "I didn't say a word, Kyo-ya."

"You were thinking it." Though once her attention shifts back down to the photographs before her, she frowns. The picture of Kid is still inside the box along with the others containing strangers, a soft hum sounding from her throat as she picks it up and observes it closely, perhaps there is a use for it after all.

"Why aren't you in bed anyway? It's late." Sounds like the raven is getting concerned once again, earning himself a low sigh in return, she was struggling to sleep even before he called but now she just has a sudden jolt of energy and it seems rather insistent.

"I can't sleep tonight for some reason, I've spent most of my time just counting the minutes away." It's quite the hindrance since she has work tomorrow, she hasn't had issues sleeping in a while, she forgot how much of a pain in the ass it can be.

"I see...would you like to come over?" That's certainly an odd request, her brows knitting as a hum rumbles in her throat, the doctor instantly elaborating before she has the chance to question him. "I've been drinking coffee all evening, I'm not sleeping anytime soon myself so we might as well stay awake together."

"Hm...okay, but why are we going to yours?" She already begins placing the lid back on the box by this point, setting the photo of Kid aside before slipping the container under her bed once again.

"I don't wanna leave Bepo alone overnight again."

That's a fair point, the pooch adores Law, it must be horrible for him when the surgeon is away for so long.

"Ah, of course. I'll be happy to see him too."

"Good, I'll pick you up soon."

"No-no, you stay there with Bepo, I can drive myself." The redhead lowly murmurs before abruptly ending the call, not giving the surgeon a chance to argue as she quietly pads over to her door.

She uses her phone as a torch whilst heading out into the living room, slowly manoeuvring through the dimly-lit darkness until she finally reaches Lotte's bedroom, quietly slipping the image of Kid underneath her door before heading back to her own room and beginning to pack her clothes and make-up for work tomorrow.

I'm sure she'll have more use for that photograph than me.
