College Life.
"You should really work more on your math." Sabo's voice being the first to distract the girl as she reads her book on history, she's currently learning about the first world war and trying to cling to every and all pieces of information since her final exam is in a week.
She has already passed most classes, yes, but this one she needs to excel at.
Her father, Dracule Mihawk, is curator of the most successful museum this side of the country has to offer. He funded the museum, opened it and is the one who specialises in getting the exhibits - it's rumoured he even owns the museum itself which isn't exactly true but it's not false either.
It mainly belongs to the government, however Mihawk had made a profitable deal with them to claim 50% ownership, a deal they ultimately accepted.
Since the raven had poured his heart and soul into the place, he had raised his child (well, adopted child anyway) to treasure it the same way he does, one day he will need to retire after all. He'd like to at least trust the person who takes over from him.
"I don't like math." Ace pouts up at the blonde sibling, a feigned sadness in his onyx eyes. "Just teach me geography, that's actually an interesting topic!"
Sabo took it upon himself to tutor his brother since the blonde has A's in every subject, which is surprising considering he only half-listens to what the professors say in class.
"You already passed the practice exam for that, you need more knowledge in math!"
The girl releases a soft sigh at the two's bickering, she had read the same sentence three times now and it still isn't sinking in due to the pair being far too loud. She picked the most secluded table in the cafeteria in attempts to hide from the boys since they always come to find her during lunch breaks; it would seem that she can run but she can't hide.
So much for trying to study.
"Here, we'll start with an easy question to warm you up." Sabo begins, setting down a sheet of paper with unanswered times tables lining the side and pointing to one with his pen. "What's the answer to this one?"
"16 x 10?" Ace questions as a thoughtful expression takes over his face, his brows lightly knitting together, Kyo glancing up at the two curiously since reading clearly isn't an option.
A small frown etching into her features as she stares at Ace, she'd wager the raven has no idea what the answer is, judging by his expression.
Unbelievable.
"Yeah, it can't get any easier than this." The blonde rumbles with a content smile, although it slowly begins to fade when he finally notices how much his sibling is struggling.
The redhead at least taking advantage of Ace's thoughtful silence and reading the sentence she was previously stuck on, finally able to hear herself think for a change, although it unsurprisingly doesn't last long.
"That is not an easy question!"
"Yes, it is! Why are you only good at math when you're playing cards?!"
Well, he isn't wrong there, Ace is good at cards and at keeping score.
It seems he's only decent at math when he has the chance of winning at a game, if not then he is evidently useless.
Kyo's brows furrowing as she tries to focus her whole attention on the book before her, the little voice inside the head reading off the paragraph even louder in attempts to combat the noise Sabo and Ace make.
"Hundreds of 'canary babies' were born during this time due to the dangerous chemicals that were being produced in--"
"Why pick that times table?! It's the hardest one!"
"It's the easiest! We were taught this in elementary school, Ace!"
The girl's patience finally at it's end as she lowers the book, her brow twitching as she simply sighs; "Just add a zero to it."
Although this seems to confuse the raven more, his head tilting to the side as a low hum rumbles in his throat before he finally answers. "So it's still 16?"
Nevermind, he's a lost cause.
Even Sabo looks completely and utterly defeated by this point, the blonde staring at his brother as if he had just worshipped the devil himself, before finally his head falls into his palm.
"Yeah, sure, we'll go with that. Let's just do some English instead."
And now the redhead's frown is aimed toward Sabo, her jaw falling ever so slightly ajar as her brow twitches, as if this boy just interrupted her reading several times only to give up on the tutoring session entirely when his pupil answers wrong.
"It's 160." She calmly mutters, marking her page before setting her book aside and leaning in to get a better look at the questionnaire laid out across the table. "With the tens, best thing to do is add a 0 to the original number."
She plucks the pen from Sabo's hand while explaining this, writing 160 in the answer box before shifting down to the next sum. "So, this is 17 x 10, yes? So you add a 0 to 17, what does it make?" The freckled boy staring at the numbers in deep thought before finally his eyes flicker back up to her own.
If you say 17, I might be tempted to impale you with this pen.
"Uh...170?"
"Yes. Write it down." She simply murmurs, passing the pen to the raven and watching as he answers the rest of the questions, hesitating slightly on a few but ultimately trusting in her method which gives her the silence she needs.
The girl reaching for her book once again but is essentially frozen in place when Sabo's voice sounds again. "Ha, good job! Now are you ready for some algebra? Kyo and I can help you!"
...You've got to be joking.
"I do not agree to he--"
"Okay! Let's do this!"
Let's not.
A deep pout slowly begins to dampen the girl's features entirely, her dark brows furrowed as she watches the blonde sift through paperwork, finally pulling out a sheet titled 'Algebra for idiots' and placing it down in front of his brother, her face still full of thunder as she retracts her hand, begrudgingly folding her arms over her chest.
Honestly, she sometimes wonders how these boys even became her friends, she has never been exactly nice.
Ace pursued a friendship with her first when he randomly sat beside her on the first day of college and spoke as he had known her for years, he asked about her father before anything else so she assumed he had connections with the man but apparently not.
The freckled raven later confessed that he had her confused for another friend of his named Bonney, apparently at first glance her hair looked pink which was why he sat with her and started asking about her father, it was only when he took a second look, he realized he had the wrong person completely but that didn't stop him from wanting to be the girl's friend.
Despite the fact that she frowned every time he spoke to her, rolled her eyes at his jokes and would swat his hand away if he reached over to borrow a pencil from her.
Most would consider her a drag and deem her unworthy of their friendship by now, but not him for some reason.
Of course, you cannot befriend one brother and not the other since they're the same age so Sabo kind of tucked her under his wing also, neither of them seem to care whether or not she's cold or distant, they just accept her as is.
Which is...different.
"Isn't Hawk-eyes out of town right now?" Ace inquires as he pretends to read the question on the sheet, she can see by how fast his eyes skim the words that he's not really reading the questions at all and if he is, he's not taking any of it in.
He's a nightmare pupil.
"Yes, why?" Ace has always called Mihawk by that name, it used to bother Kyo since his reasoning was that the man has eyes like a hawk and she simply could not see it, of course that was before her father got irritated by her.
She failed a test in high school for History, since she preferred Art she poured all of her freetime into that test instead of the others, she failed most subjects that year but Mihawk only cared about History.
It was when he scolded her, she realized that yes, he does have eyes a little like a hawk.
He didn't even need to yell at her, his tone was calm and crisp but his disappointment made waves, she hasn't failed a History test ever since.
"You gonna have a party~?"
"No."
Sabo silently listening in as he watches Ace mark an answer to a question, his brows suddenly furrowing; "Why did you put a 2 above the a? a + a does not--!"
"Why not? You live in a castle! It's big enough for a party!"
"I have to study for my exam."
"You're always--"
"Ace! You answered this wrong!" Sabo once again barks, drawing a frown to his brother's features as the raven faces him.
"So? When am I ever going to need algebra again?!"
"To pass your exam!!"
These boys can be so noisy sometimes.
