Chapter Five: Shopping Spree & An Act of Kindness

I kept my head down through the rest of my classes. I didn't have any more hours with the Heathers and if I stayed out of the way I was safe. Usually. Hopefully.

Quickly throwing my notebook into my bag, I was about to head to Betty's locker so we could walk home together. Neither of us had a car and we only lived a few blocks apart. But I was stopped by Heather Macnamara standing in front of me, blocking the stairwell I would need to use to find Betty.

"Heather says we're taking you for new clothes. Get your ass to the student parking lot."

"I kinda had other plans," I said, trying to move around her.

She rolled her eyes and said, "You have to listen if you want to be a Heather, Veronica."

"O-Okay," I stuttered, pulling out my phone. "I'm coming."

As she walked away I quickly texted Betty to tell her I couldn't make it.

Veronica Sawyer: hey I can't hang out this afternoon like I promised. Sorry.

Betty Finn: that's fine, why not?

Veronica Sawyer: The Heathers want me to come with them.

Betty Finn: I get it. Maybe another time.

I shoved my phone into my bag and headed towards the student parking lot; it was behind the school and needed repaving pretty badly. The nicest car in the whole lot was Heather Chandler's raspberry red Porsche. She leaned against the hood, laughing at something Duke said.

"Veronica!" Duke called from across the lot.

I smiled and jogged over, my sneakers crunching on the gravelly pavement. "Hey," I gasped as I got there.

Chandler rolled her eyes and lazily walked to the driver's seat. Macnamara claimed shotgun, leaving me and Duke in the back.

Blasting through the radio was some rap song I'd never heard of.

"Ugh, Heather, can't we listen to something good," Macnamara groaned, leaning on the door frame.

Chandler glared at her. "I happen to like this song," she said, turning up the radio.

We sat in silence, the radio blaring. I'm pretty sure my eardrum burst a few minutes into the twenty minute drive.

After parking in the lot of a large shopping center, Heather Chandler pulled down the visor in he car and used the small mirror to check her lipstick.

"You look fine, Heather," I said, rolling my eyes.

She glared at me through the mirror. "If you think it's fine then i probably look hideous."

Duke looked at me and made a face like she's
insane.

When Heather was finally done reapplying her lipstick, we entered the store and I immediately knew I couldn't afford anything inside. Big name brands covered every shelf. Price tags way out of any budget. This shit cost more than my yearly allowance.

My hesitation didn't stop the Heathers, who instead headed to a rack of dresses and I silently followed.

Chandler picked up one that and practically threw it at me. "Try it on."

In the dressing room mirror, it looked perfect. It was a long sleeved royal blue dress with shoulder cutouts and a black belt. It fell just above my knees and made my eyes stand out.

I loved this dress.

What I didn't love was the tag. It was fifty dollars for this one dress. How the fuck was I supposed to pay for that?

A sigh left my lips as I walked out of the dressing room. The Heathers stood, waiting, all of them with arms crossed.

"Not terrible," Chandler said. Coming from her, that was one of He best things I could hear.

"I can't afford it," I said, fidgeting with the tag hanging from my sleeve.

Macnamara rolled her eyes. "I'll pay for it, just this time. So you actually look decent at school for once."

I smiled. "Thanks, Heather."

"Don't mention it. Come on, you need some shoes."

In total, the Heathers has gotten me the dress, two blouses, and a pair of black flats. The little act of charity during the shopping spree made me wonder if they really were all bad.
