Chapter Eight: Freeze Your Brain
I smoothed out my dress, staring into the mirror. I had straightened my hair so it laid flat down my back. My makeup was decent; The Heathers could've done a better job but this wasn't too bad.
A car horn sounded from outside and I glanced out the window. Heather's Porsche was sitting out front and I quickly ran down the stairs.
"Bye, Mom!" I yelled as I threw open the door.
"Don't stay out too late!"
I slammed the door and hopped into the back of the car. "Hey," I said, slightly out of breath.
"Hey," All three Heathers said in unison.
Chandler pulled up in front of a Seven Eleven. "Veronica, go get some corn nuts."
"Okay, Heather," I sighed, getting out.
Of all people I could've run into, it was him. The Mystery Kid himself, Jason Dean. His black jeans and dark grey shirt hung perfectly on him. Tall and gangly. His face seemed to have a permanent half-smile.
"Greetings and salutations, Veronica Sawyer," he said when I entered.
I gave a weak laugh. "Surprised you remembered my name."
He shrugged. "You're interesting to me. Jason Dean, JD for short." He said, formally introducing himself.
I started browsing the shelves for the corn nuts. He walked over and took my hand.
"What are you doing?" I laughed awkwardly.
"My treat," he said, leading me to the slushy machine.
"I kinda have to go, actually. My friends are waiting for me."
"I don't really like your friends."
I grinned. "I don't really like my friends, either."
JD rolled his eyes. "Come on, what kinda slushy do you want? Mountain Dew? Raspberry?"
"I don't want one, it's fine."
"Well, I think they're a good way to fix problems." He started pouring a Big Gulp of raspberry slushy.
I leaned on the counter, watching him. How d'ya figure that?"
"The way I see it, if your mind is numb, you can't dwell on the past." He took a long slurp of the slushy in his hand. "Freeze your brain, just ignore your problems. It's what keeps me sane."
Rolling my eyes, I stood up straight. "Yeah, sure."
"VERONICA! CORN NUTS!" I heard Heather scream.
I sighed. "I hate my friends." I quickly grabbed a bag of corn nuts and paid as quickly as I could.
JD smirked and waved as I left.
