Small summary:

1. The show takes place in Paris

2. Most of the characters are high schoolers

3. Marinette Dupain-Cheng is also a super-heroine, Ladybug.

4. Adrien Agreste is Ladybug's superhero partner, Chat Noir.

5. No one knows the heroes' identities. They don't know each other's identities, either.

6. All superheroes and super-villains are transformed by their own kwami. A kwami is a tiny magical being that, when the magic words are spoken, that their powers are fused with their respective Miraculous, which is a magical piece of jewelry.

The Good Guys:

Ladybug—her superpower is called the "Lucky Charm" which gives her an object that helps her to solve a problem and save the day. Her identity is Marinette Dupain-Cheng. Her Miraculous is her earrings. Her kwami is named Tikki.

Chat Noir—his superpower is called "Cataclysm" which gives him the power to destroy anything he touches. His identity is Adrien Agreste. His Miraculous is his ring. His kwami is named Plagg.

(There are more people on the team, but as the team keeps growing larger, I don't want to keep adding on to this list. This is just the basics.)

The Bad Guys:

Hawkmoth—he is the big, bad guy. His identity is Gabriel Agreste, Adrien's father. His superpower is to give certain butterflies a dark power. These darkened butterflies are called "Akumas". These butterflies go out and seek a person in a negative mood and use those emotions to 'evil-ize' that person into a villain. He wants to get Ladybug and Chat Noir's Miraculouses (jewelry) because, together, they will give him the power to bring back a dead loved one (Adrien's mother, Emilie). His Miraculous is a brooch. His kwami is named Nooroo.

Mayura—she is Hawkmoth's second-in-command. Her identity is Nathalie, Gabriel Agreste's secretary. Her power is to 'evil-ize' a feather so that it becomes a weapon for Hawkmoth's next 'akumitization.' Her Miraculous is a brooch. Her kwami is called Duusu.

The Love Square:

1. Adrienette—Marinette-Win; Adrien-Lose

2. Ladrien—Ladybug--Win; Adrien-Win

3. Ladynoir—Ladybug -Lose; Chat Noir-Win

4. Marichat—Marinette-Lose; Chat Noir-Lose

Adrienette—The 'Fluffy' ship

~Adrienette is when both Marinette and Adrien fall in love with each other's civilian forms. There is mostly a bunch of fluffy stories surrounding this ship. There are the occasional exceptions of angst—usually when Marinette reveals her love for Adrien to her and he rejects her.

Ladrien—The 'Most Despised' ship

~Ladrien is the least-loved ship of the fandom, by far. The reason for this is because both of the characters have crushes on the other; there is no room for them to grow to love the other halves of them. (Adrien is Chat Noir, whom Ladybug doesn't have romantic feelings for. And Ladybug is Marinette, who Adrien is insistently calling "just a friend".)

Ladynoir—The 'Power' ship

~This is the ship that everyone loves, because they are both their superhero personas. Chat Noir is incredibly flirty, and Ladybug is confident and sarcastic; this makes for great banters and rom-com material.

Marichat—The 'Everything' ship

~In this ship, anything is possible. This is probably one of the most popular ships because, unlike Ladrien, they are both falling in love with each other's genuine self. (Marinette is sweet, intelligent, and clumsy and doesn't feel like she's a fake person (like she does when she wears the Ladybug mask). And when Adrien is Chat Noir, he can finally be free, without feeling caged up, lonely, or feeling the burdens of being a teen celebrity with no escape. Lastly, this is the 'everything' ship because oneshots can range from the most innocent of things, to incredibly angsty, to...the 'other' side of the scale.
