A Tale of Fallen Heroes (Pt.5)

Chapter 5: Forests, Foxes, and Feelings

"What are you doing?"

Bumblewing flinched at the sound of her comrade's voice behind her. She quietly turned around—sill in her crouching-position on the rooftop. Behind her, Remmytail was crouched next to her. He looked conflicted, like he was confused, curious, and nervous at her current predicament. At his look of concern, Bumblewing hurried to explain the situation to her friend—whispering all the while.

"It's probably nothing! I just—" she hesitated before continuing. "I just have a gut feeling that something big is going to happen. And it makes me feel uneasy." After a few moments of silence, she spoke again. "Like I said, it's probably nothing. I shouldn't have troubled you with it."

The presence of a comforting hand on her shoulder made her look up into Remmy's honey-hued eyes. He looked at her with sincerity and rubbed his thumb—gentleman-like—along her shoulder to console her.

"I disagree," he said, softly. "I'm glad you told me, or else I would have felt incredibly stupid, myself. You see, I've had the same feeling all day." He took in her shocked face and chuckled, quietly. "Yeah, it's true. It feels like something is taunting me—but I can't see what it is. So, I transformed and thought I'd keep watch over the city. I can see now that you had the same idea."

Bumblewing nodded and turned back to face the skyline of their village.

"You're right," she said, voice still barely above a whisper. "I came here to see if I could somehow get rid of this feeling if I convinced myself that I was doing everything I could to protect my home." She turned to the handsome brunette male. "How did you find me? How did you know I was here?"

"I didn't," he confessed. "I just was making my way to the scene of the last Tainted attack, which is near here, and I spotted your figure on this rooftop. I almost missed you because you were crouched so low. I recognized your pretty face—only this is the first time that I've seen you looking so grim. I knew something must have been wrong." He turned to face the skyline that shone in the moonlight.

The couple was there for quite some time—it must have been well into the early hours of the morning before they noticed the small light in the forest. The flickering of what must have been a fire was dim, but it was present through the thicket in the distance. The sun was far from being up, yet, and the moon was still in the sky. It was Remmytail who spotted it first, with his heightened sense of sight. He'd quietly sprung to his feet, startling Bumblewing as he did so. He quickly relayed to her what he saw and they agreed to take a closer look.

The pair sped overtop of the town, bounding on the tops of roofs, walls, and trees to reach their destination. At last, they came to an abrupt stop—a slight distance from the light—for fear that the perpetrators may spot them and run off.

Instincts kicking in, Remmytail snagged Bumblewing around her waist and pulled them both into a different patch of forest a little bit off. He pressed her back firmly against a nearby tree and stood in front of her. He hurriedly clamped a hand over her mouth and held a finger to his own, indicating for her to be silent.

While practically holding her breath, Bumblewing slowly regained her senses after the initial adrenaline wore off. She could hear the faintest of footsteps and the snap of a twig coming from where they had previously been standing.

She turned her gaze to Remmytail; his hand still covering her mouth, his lithe body pressed against hers in an attempt to shield them both, and his other hand pressed lightly at her waist in a protective instinct. His face was turned away from her and to the edge of the forest. His deep brown eyes were wide as he searched for the person whose footsteps he had heard. His gray rat's ears twitched and swiveled—straining to hear more.

Bumblewing couldn't tear herself away from his tanned face. Her thickly lashed blue eyes were trained on his handsome features. She mutely stared at his face as a blush steadily grew on her fair cheeks. She took in his sharp jawline, his fluffy brown hair, and the mask around his large brown eyes. At last, his rat ears stopped twitching and he dropped his hand from her mouth. He let out a breath of relief.

"I can't sense anyone else. Whoever was coming that way must have gone in the op—" His voice died in his throat as he felt a sensation that he was entirely new to. He snapped his head back to face the girl in his arms, his eyes were wide and his mouth was open in surprise.

Her hands had snaked up his chest and into his hair. Upon realizing what her hands had done of their own accord, Bumblewing's blush intensified. The raven-haired girl tried to remove her hands, only to find that she didn't have the strength or willpower to do it.

"I—I'm s-sorry," she whispered in horror at her actions.

She tried again to withdraw her hands. To her surprise, she felt the man's own fingers lightly grip her wrists and softly pull back into their original positions around his neck. Her breath hitched and she felt her heart stutter at his actions. Bumblewing met the brunette man's eyes with her own shocked ones.

She felt her gut twist in giddy knots at the heated look he was giving her. His tanned cheeks were flushed and his breathing was shallow—like he was holding his breath. His thick lashes were cast downward as he towered over her. She had to tilt her chin up to see his eyes clearly. His normal honey-colored orbs were now a milky-chocolate. The look was deep and heady and made Bumblewing's knees threaten to buckle.

"Don't be." He said. Even his voice was deeper. Huskier.

The hands that were previously holding her wrists moved ever so slowly to her shoulders, and eventually to her waist.

"Is—is this okay?" He asked, concern coloring his voice. "Am I scaring you?"

"You know, Rem," Bumblewing said, adjusting her arms around his neck as she spoke. "Sometimes, I think you're a little too much of a gentleman."

She lightly tugged on the back of his head, slowly bringing his head closer to her own. His hands circled behind her waist to hold her lower back, as though she were infinitely precious. She wound one of her hands into his brown locks, pulling him still closer. Their faces were mere inches away. Bumblewing felt her heart skip a beat as she saw Remmy lightly lick his lips as he neared her own. She closed her eyes and tilted her head up in anticipation. After an agonizing moment of tension, their lips met, at long last.

The kiss was sweet. The two poured as much feelings into it as the could—finally expressing their emotions. The cool night air was the opposite of the heated blush of both their cheeks. What moonlight there was, passed through the overhead tree branches, illuminating the couple during their moments of bliss.

But the moment was short-lived. The kiss was interrupted by the amused chuckle behind them. Startled, the two heroes broke apart from their romantic position and quickly moved to create distance between them. They quickly turned to see who had tumbled across them.

"Well, lovebirds, sorry to interrupt, but is there a reason that you guys came to the forest? Or was it just to make out?"

Bumblewing placed her face in her hands, groaned, and leaned back into the tree in embarrassment. Remmytail's face was bright red with the force of his blush.

"We—we weren't making out!" He insisted, embarrassed by the blunt choice of words that had been used to describe the situation.

"Yeah, well if I hadn't stopped you two, it would have resulted in making out. Definitely."

"We didn't ask you for your input, Foxglove." Bumblewing said through her hands.

"Looks like your mouths were a little too occupied to ask anything." The fox hero cackled.

Bumblewing uncovered her face after her blush had faded somewhat. She fixed Foxglove with an unamused stare and raised her eyebrows. "Did you have a reason for coming here, or did you just come to mock us?"

The fox-themed hero twirled his flute, lazily. "I was in the neighborhood and happened to see your silhouettes flying across the rooftops. I thought there was another Tainted attack. But I can see now that I should have stayed where I was; I did not need to see my two closest hero-friends eating each others' faces."

"We weren't eating ea--!" Remmytail's indignant statement was interrupted by Bumblewing, who had a mischievous gleam in her eye.

"--Wait!!" she exclaimed and pointed a finger at Foxglove. " You were 'in the neighborhood'?! But after Tainted attacks, you head off to the complete other side of town!" She narrowed her eyes and smirked. She crossed her arms and cocked a hip. "You were visiting that mysterious lady 'friend' of yours, just now, weren't you?"

When the fox hero's face registered shock, she laughed, heartily.

"Wait," Remmytail said with a smile. "Flower, here, has a girlfriend?" The brunette man was never one to miss the opportunity to tease the hero clad in orange.

"Yes!" Bumblewing giggled.

"N-no!" Foxglove stuttered and tried to recover control over the situation. "It's not like that! S-she's not my girlfriend. And my name is Foxglove, not 'Flower'!" He frowned.

"Well if she's not your girlfriend," the bee heroine pried. "Then why would you visit her at night? What is she to you?"

In a flickering moment, Foxglove lowered his guard. "She's everything to me. And she loves me back. It's just that, her parents disapprove of our match."

"Oh, I'm so sorry, Foxy," the young woman said, feeling guilty. "I had no idea."

"It's okay, Little B," he said, charismatic smile back in place. "You didn't kno--"

"Everybody, get back in the treeline, now!" Remmytail gripped both of his friend's upper-arms and yanked them into the forest.

"Hey!" Foxglove barked, defensively. "What's your de--?!"

Bumblewing elbowed him, cutting him off. She pointed a finger to Remmy's twitching rat's ears, his attentive stance, and to the distance. Foxglove tilted his head, listening, too. He could barely hear the rumble of voices and the crunch of feet on gravel.

"Come on!" A masculine voice from somewhere in the distance called to their accomplices. "Night Viper doesn't like to be kept waiting." A grumble of agreement swept through the small crowd and their footsteps quickened and faded, slowly.

Foxglove turned to face Remmytail, who was checking to make sure the bee heroine was alright. He smirked and tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.

"Well, Vermin," he said, teasingly using the nickname he had given the brunette man. "Looks like your hearing skills just gave us the opportunity to sneak in to Night Viper's lair."
